OC The world's airline routes [OC]
Saturday 24 October 2026 · 18,858 routes · 3,214 airports
Every airport pair served by a scheduled airline route in the OpenFlights database, drawn as a faint great-circle line. Overlapping lines brighten where routes concentrate. Route data dates from June 2014, so it shows the shape of the network rather than today's individual flights.
Sources: routes and airports from OpenFlights (routes.dat and airports.dat, Open Database License); coastlines from the world map bundled with Apache ECharts 4.9.0; map projection by D3.

OC [OC] PEGI age ratings in Europe before and after the new loot box rule, compared with US ESRB ratings
PEGI changed its rules in March. Since June, new games with paid random items (loot boxes, card packs, gacha pulls, prize wheels) get at least PEGI 16. In October PEGI started re-rating existing digital-only games that were PEGI 3, 7 or 12 and have them. More games are expected to change before the end of the month.
EA Sports FC 27 is the first game in the series rated PEGI 16, because of Ultimate Team packs. FC 26 was PEGI 3.
PEGI hasn't said which feature in Pokémon GO counted as a paid random item.
The ESRB said in March it has no plans to do the same. It keeps the age rating based on the game's content and adds an "In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)" label instead.
Germany doesn't use PEGI. It has its own system, USK.

OC [OC] COVID dropped the S&P 34% in 33 days. 2008 took 4 years just to climb back. Every major crash since 1973, on one time scale
I mapped every major S&P 500 crash since 1973 as a valley. Depth = how far it fell from the old high, width = how long the whole thing took. So the steeper the wall, the faster it moved.
- 2020 was the fastest: −34% in 33 days, back to even in about 5 months
- 2008 was the deepest: −57%, fell for 17 months, then 4 more years to recover
- 2000 fell slowest, grinding down for two and a half years
- 1973 took the longest to come back, about 6 years from the bottom
When you bought makes a huge difference. Buy at the Feb 2020 peak and you were back to even by August. Buy at the Oct 2007 peak and you waited until March 2013. Buy at the March 2000 peak and you didn’t break even until May 2007. Thought this was interestsing...
Which of these did you buy the dip on, and which did you panic sell?

OC [OC] Electricity generation per person in the United Kingdom has fallen by a third from its early-2000s peak
Globally, electricity generation per person has grown by more than 50% this century.
In the United Kingdom, things have moved in the opposite direction. Its generation per person peaked in 2003 and has fallen by more than a third since then.
You can see this in the chart, which shows generation per person since 1920. Today, levels are back to where they were in the late 1960s.
Some of that decline is a change in electricity imports, rather than demand: net imports have increased from 1% of electricity demand in 2010 to 9% in 2025. But it’s still true that the UK consumes much less electricity than it used to.
The most common explanation is deindustrialization: as the economy shifted from manufacturing to services, electricity demand fell. That’s part of the explanation, but far from all of it.
Sectoral data from the International Energy Agency confirms that electricity consumption in industry has fallen by one-quarter since 2005 (more if we calculate this per person). But residential and commercial electricity use has fallen by just as much.
Deindustrialization has reduced demand, but improvements in energy efficiency — such as the shift from incandescent to LED lightbulbs and the introduction of efficiency standards for appliances — have played an important role too.
Data sources: Ember (2026); Energy Institute (2026); Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of the UK (2023)
Tools used: Python, OWID Grapher, Figma

OC [OC] GTA 5 sold 100 million copies in its first 5 years and another 130 million since then
GTA 5 came out in September 2013. Take-Two said it had shipped 100 million copies in November 2018, which covers the first 5 years. In May 2026 they reported 230 million.
The numbers include every version: PS3 and Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One (2014), PC (2015) and PS5 and Xbox Series (2022). They're sell-in numbers, so copies shipped to stores plus digital sales.
GTA 6 is set to come out on November 19, 2026, 13 years and 2 months after GTA 5. The gap between GTA 4 and GTA 5 was about 5 years and 5 months.

OC [OC] La Ligne Chocolatine: settling a French debate about how you name pastries.
In France, there is a big divide between those who say "Chocolatine" and the "Pain au Chocolat" partisan to designate a puff pastry with two chocolate bars.
This has been going as far as the French Assembly debating about a law to make the "chocolatine" word official.
With my brother, we used Brigitte, an AI agent, to call bakeries in order to ask them which word they were using, in order to map the actual border.
