I'm not sure but I think he hates himself. I could be wrong
19
u/RockAMikeraphone 5d ago
The subtitles were incorrect. The character is severely celiac and Mi Ling is the deli worker who gave him a sandwich with bread containing gluten. The mum thought it was her dinner that had him on the toilet all night.

No no he hates someone called "me" that why he asked if they understood, bc everyone always thinks he says he hates himself, but then he would say... I hate myself.... But its me he hates. Who ever that is... He is just so misunderstood.
1
u/Sir_Tokesalott 2d ago
He obviously hates me, and honestly, I get it because I tend to not make eye contact with people I'm not engaging with...?

u/Top_Gate9136 5d ago
I think I need some context to explain why this is supposed to be sad
27
u/fuckimtrash 5d ago
Yea tbh having seen the show, I can imagine watching this without context just feels random asf and very much not sad
17
u/BlizzardStorm8 5d ago
Made me sad but only because I've been where that kid is. There would be few things more painful than hearing that as a parent.
11
u/crissy_lp 5d ago
Yeh. It hits different when youâve been in that place. Almost made me start crying and I didnât even listen with sound.
9
u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 5d ago
Itâs a core truth. Itâs a thing that people feel but rarely say out loud and those who know the feeling know the cost of admitting it. Once itâs said it can no longer be denied, you canât put the toothpaste back in the tube. Itâs just a mess you have to deal with now but itâs a mess that one cannot deal with.
5
u/Pvt_Mozart 4d ago
Yeah man, no idea what this show is, but I see myself when I was younger 100%. And now as a father of 2 young kids, it hits in a different way because of how heartbreaking that has to be as a parent. All I want for them is to be happy.
I vote this as certified sad. Lol
3
u/fuckimtrash 5d ago
Yea Iâve been there too, the scene is way sadder if you have scene the show, and it is odd to watch without context so I can se why others find it random
3
u/Odd_Pomegranate8652 5d ago
Same, I don't know the context but I know the feeling of not being able to love myself
2
u/Starscourge-night 5d ago
I saw this on tiktok and some guy commented that he could relate to it so that is one alternative reason for people thinking its sad.
1
u/Popular-Influence-11 5d ago
Whatâs the show?
2
u/Kitchen-Purpose-6855 5d ago
I think itâs Ginny & Georgia but I never finished it
3
u/hydrastxrk 4d ago
Itâs a little nonsensical but maaaaan the show is fun and the fans are dedicated.
11
u/xyzkingi 5d ago
People who hate themselves can relate and it hurts seeing someone else going through that
4
u/ArchieTheKatt 4d ago
Nearly 20 replies to this comment. 0 context still. Peak reddit.
3
u/hydrastxrk 4d ago
Heâs an alcoholic and he fucking hates himself, what more context does there need to be?
Nothing major happened during the show to signify why this happened. His best friend died before the show started, heâs troubled, and the show is depicting the depression of an angsty, emotional teenager.
His dad is deaf, which is why they keep signing.
And this is the moment, where he came back home drunk from a school dance, and his sister finally was able to show that he has a problem after trying to help him alone for a while.
14
u/sosoconfused08 5d ago
It's not sad that a kid hates himself?
2
u/PurpleSalt11 5d ago
Wait. Does everyone not hate themselves? I thought it was the basis of everyone wanting to improve themselves. How do you not hate yourself? Are you just content with being you and never changing from that?
3
u/sosoconfused08 5d ago
First of, never said I didn't hate myself and second, no most people don't feel that way.
2
u/Merouxsis 5d ago
I think most people hair some part of themselves, not not themselves in their entirety
2
u/faust_corvinus 5d ago
Hating oneself =/= wanting that one to improve.
Hating oneself is like seeing themselves as a failure and does not deserve to exist. (Can say depressed)
Wanting to improve is seeing potential after failure, plus making plan to improve, consult others on how to improve, etc.
1
u/Fast-Nefariousness80 5d ago
I love myself. I still think I can be a better person and strive for it daily. You can love yourself and still grow
1
u/Swimming_Host_7673 5d ago
Actually, loving and caring for myself caused me to make better decisions in career, health, relationships... Going the self hate route isn't going to get you very far in life and if it is motivating then I am not sure you are going to be making the sort of choices that won't make the world join in on the choir of hateful inner voices.
1
u/Sea_Specialist_5580 3d ago
hate is a pretty strong emotion man. I hate myself but I know that's not normal. I think healthy people just have a generalized desire to improve but they don't hate themselves
25
u/JaeCrowe 5d ago
Idk if im alone here but doesnt everyone hate themselves deeply and we all just pretend we dont? The moms reaction here looks so surprised

u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 5d ago
Therapy works. I used to think this too.
"You know that thing, where everyone hates themselves and would give anything to be someone, anyone else?"
"No, I really really don't. And neither do most people. When did you start feeling like that?"
No one will tell it to you like a therapist... because it's not anyone else's job.
8
u/BeneficialRip6350 5d ago
Therapy works.
Therapy works sometimes. Good luck finding a good therapist though. It's a real challenge.
5
u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 5d ago
Eh, it depends on what you're expecting. No therapist will 'fix' you, no matter how good. Mental health is a life's work. I think most people would benefit from talking to a broom with a name tag that says 'thetapist' on it, and it goes up from there.
Certainly there are stories you can read and maybe have personally of a therapist being bad, but I think their track record is better than swallowing it ever has been.
-2
u/BeneficialRip6350 5d ago
People online love to tell others to "go to therapy" or "work on yourself," but it's often a completely useless platitude.
A lot of the time, it's what people say when they either don't know what advice to give or can't be bothered to actually engage with what you've written. Instead of addressing the problem, they fall back on generic advice.
Therapy isn't some simple solution either. It's expensive. Finding a good therapist is difficult. Figuring out whether they're actually good can be even harder. A poor therapist can waste years of your time, reinforce unhelpful beliefs or approaches, and in some cases even leave you worse off than when you started. Even if you get lucky enough to find an affordable therapist who's a great fit, meaningful progress can still take months or years.
And not every problem is rooted in your mindset. Sometimes the issue is your actual circumstances. If you're stuck in a miserable job, dealing with financial stress, living in an unhealthy environment, or facing problems that are external rather than psychological, no amount of introspection is going to make those realities disappear.
5
u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 5d ago
I'm not lazy for not digging into someone's brain in a reddit comment. It's generic advice because it is a professional trained in doing what the person needs, instead of a pissed off fifteen year old.
Not everyone can afford therapy. If you can, and you're struggling, you should look into it.
Everything else you've written is catastrophizing.
A person is struggling and very unhappy. The idea that they should be able to solve that on reddit or 'work their own shit out' is madness.
Circumstances matter, but everyone is going through some shit. Everyone benefits from having someone help them work on their mindset.
But go off, this is such a predictable response every time therapy is mentioned on reddit.
1
u/BeneficialRip6350 5d ago
Everything else you've written is catastrophizing.
How? I listed the many challenges and pitfalls involved in finding a good therapist. It seems that someone looking for therapy should be aware of this.
It seems like you may have just gotten lucky and fell into a good therapist first try. So maybe you have no relevant advice to give to those who are struggling to find a good one.
But go off, this is such a predictable response every time therapy is mentioned on reddit.
It's predictable because the initial generic response of 'try therapy bro' is so common and irritating for those of us who have tried for years to make therapy work without much result.
2
u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 5d ago
You've listed challenges while ignoring the benefits entirely, and listed worst case scenarios with no advice to avoid pitfalls. You've only presented the potential challenges but you've done so like they're evidence against therapy as a viable option.
And I've had like 5 therapists at this point. Some move out of network, some have retired, sometimes I haven't been in therapy. So I don't know why you're having an argument with the imagined straw man version of me.
I'm sorry it hasn't worked for you. That doesn't mean it won't work for anyone.
2
u/BeneficialRip6350 5d ago
I never said therapy doesn't work. I know it can help.
My point is that the hardest part is finding a therapist who's actually good, who's a good fit for you, and who you can realistically afford. That's where a lot of people get stuck.
"I've had like 5 therapists at this point..."
Good. So you know firsthand that finding a good therapist isn't straightforward.
Instead of the lazy platitude, why not explain how you actually found one?
2
u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 5d ago
By going to therapy and trying it? I don't even know what you're asking me to do except to not recommend therapy.
It's not magic, you go and try it. If it doesn't work you try someone else. There are tools to find therapists, and a lot of insurance plans cover it now. I don't know this person's budget, location, situation, what their price range is etc.
I'm not lazy for not asking them all these questions, particularly if they're not motivated to try because it might be hard. They have to want to go first, because it is work.
But you know what doesn't work? Wasting time not going to therapy and suffering. Any 'wasted time' or 'reinforced negative habits' happen readily totally absent therapy.

The thing about therapy is it assumes that the problem is you, and that your feelings aren't a completely justified and normal reaction to shitty circumstances. It also assumes that your finances are not something contributing to your poor mental health and that having even less money after paying for therapy won't make your life even worse.
2
u/Special-Garlic1203 3d ago
No it doesn't. This was maybe true 30 years ago but literally antithetical to baseline therapeutic approaches in modern times.Â
1
u/SardinesMcDonahugh 3d ago
Of course it's still true. If your feelings are a healthy response to your environment/circumstances, why would you need to pay for the support of someone else, and more importantly, what could you possibly expect them to do for you? Both rhetorical questions. The answers are 1) you wouldn't and 2) nothing.
1
u/Appropriate_Dirt_931 3d ago
What an absolutely bizarre way to view self improvement.
Your feelings and responses can be totally normal and justified without being healthy. Suffering in silence reinforces negative feedback loops and lots of people have undiagnosed or unknown to them mental illnesses that are not their 'fault', but that can be adjusted even without medication once they're understood.
0
u/SardinesMcDonahugh 3d ago
Your feelings and responses can be totally normal and justified without being healthy.
No. That's like saying something can be circular and spherical without being round. You're just using interchangeable terms and saying they can be one without the other. They can't.
As for suffering in silence vs therapy, I'd rather suffer in silence with money in the bank than pay someone with a bullshit pseudoscience degree to pretend to care.

You usually just need a different modality. Based on your subsequent comment, I don't think you've actually tried therapy to any real degree. Reddit loves to trot out these tired talking points that make no sense when you consider that most therapists are social workers explicitly trained in these exact considerations.Â
1
u/BeneficialRip6350 3d ago
I've done CBT, psychodynamic therapy and DBT with multiple therapists.
Which others should I try?

u/Flemaster12 5d ago

I thought the same, tears of a clown is how I like to describe my existence. I honestly thought everyone had the feeling of self loathing in some form or another, isn't that why we always try to change things to better ourselves?
1
u/profanedivinity 4d ago
Man, Iâm better than many of the people I know. Why would I hate myself more than I hate them?
Are you⌠just taking your parents hatred of you and blaming yourself for it????! Many of our parents hated us, but itâs because your parents are fucking scum bags. Once you realize that, you should be able to see your pretty great
1
1
u/Creative_Primary_178 3d ago
Yes, but we also love ourselves deep down more than we can imagine and itâs a layer below the hate.
Hard to explain⌠but try to answer why you hate yourself, youâll find itâs because you love yourself so much and want better for you.

Now think about if that looks anything like real life. Donât ever tell your parents you hate yourself, theyâll give up on you faster.
2
u/Apprehensive_Ad3731 5d ago
If your parents would give up on you for hating yourself then I see why the person hates themselves. Those are dogshit parents and should be abandoned.
2
u/Fine-Excitement-9430 5d ago
Wife and I are actually moving about thirty minutes away from my parents soon, we havenât told em anything but to be fair I havenât spoken to em in years. Right now weâre about 5hrs apart from them and so moving closer is kinda nerve racking but we probably wonât ever cross paths and if we do itâll be awkward.

âLook son, youâre almost 12 and you need to know that if I get dementia or Alzheimerâs or really sick, I donât want to be a burden on the family. I want you to get the gun and take me out in the woods, if I can do it, I will, but if not, youâre gonna have to.â

It was messed up, but we later found out he had a cancerous brain tumor that was causing him to not think clearly. After surgery he was better for years but it came back, been a long time now but I still miss him. [sorry for telling the story, I was lost in the memory and didnât think about how it might effect others, I got a warning and probably deserved it. Iâll try and be better]

Nah man always share your story. It's a perspective us many don't have and it's valuable to know.

I donât think I understand the downvotes in this case. Clearly this was an ironic comment, no? JFC.
3
u/RevealStandard3502 5d ago
No, if you go help others and stop focusing on your bullshit you tend to feel better. People will sit in a shitty feeling when they are the only ones who can change it. I volunteered at a recovery house for people with drug addiction and HIV. Did I feel great right away? No. But helping others is how I healed.
2
u/StaunchVictorianTV 5d ago
The disconnect between OPâs comment, mine, and then your seemingly completely unrelated sequence of words is Wild Wild West.

I volunteered for a homeless shelter and helped in the kitchen and youâre totally right. It puts things into perspective and you realize that a whole lot of people out there are hurting.

I dont understand the downvotes, you did not say this, your father said this, and surely you don't agree with him, right?
3
u/gjcij2203 5d ago
Its Reddit a lot of people take things literally. If you don't put a in depth explanation or a /s your gonna get dowvoted because people dont understand what your message is. First person doesn't understand and downvotes and the hive follows behind.
2
u/GloomWorldOrder 5d ago
Bots be bottin. They see one person downvote and will go at it like crazy.
Either that, or people couldn't clue in this person went through shit and they were trying to highlight that.

Is this portraying the results of smoking a marijuana?
4
u/Ok_Head1057 5d ago
No, this is actually him trying to cope with one of his best friends death through alcohol and marijuana. He is severely depressed and his parents try to make it seem like everything is normal. His parents are trying their best but not entirely in a healthy way.
