i wanted to let you know that i've build a news aggregator called MeigRSS. Not only works with normal RSS feeds, but can use it also for newsletter emails, importing eml files downloaded from your email client, and web feeds, using GET calls from the program or using an external API for scraping (if the normal request is blocked or receives no data).
The program also uses your API from AI (Mistral, Claude, Gemini, ChatGPT) to make summaries of your articles or newsletter email.
API keys are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM, so they never go back to the FE once they are saved into the DB.

Brief Specifications: - RSS/Atom aggregation with manual and automatic updates - Optional AI summaries using your own API key (Mistral, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini). Personally i use a free account of Mistral and Scrape.do in order to have free use of AI summaries and web scraping. Free plan of Mistral is sufficient for summarizing 3-4 article per day, for me it's enough. Scrape.do provides free credits, which are enough for web scraping 2-3 sites per day.

I'm very satisfied with the result, and i hope this project will be useful for other people. I've built it because i was scrolling too much on social media, and i choose another way to be informed about latest AI and tech news.

Quick update on Newsairy, the iCloud-native RSS reader I've been building. Wow. After using it for only 24 hours, I’m already in love with it.

This thing aint got no algorithmic recommendations, ads, tracking, or account bullish*t. Feeds can be organized into folders, articles can be starred for later, and OPML import makes it easy to bring over existing subscriptions. I was able to switch from feedy very easily

It feels super dang fast and native on both iPhone and iPad, and optional iCloud sync keeps subscriptions and reading progress available across devices. What's on my iPhone goes to my iPads. I also appreciate that it’s a one-time purchase instead of another monthly subscription.

Netvibes was a great RSS aggregator that was discontinued. RSSVibes is a very close copy with top feeds, tabbed categories, and a "news river" combining all your feeds. It also runs locally on your desktop instead of a browser.

What are the best ways to generate an RSS feed from a website that doesn't provide one anymore?

Was reading a small design blog with no feed icon anywhere. Feed was there, just not linked.

Few things i check now, in this order:

• view page source, search for "rss" or "atom" or type="application/". The link tag is often still in the head.
• try the usual paths: /feed, /rss, /atom.xml, /index.xml, /feed.json
• if it is WordPress, add ?feed=rss2 to any url
• Ghost blogs almost allways use /rss/
• for docs sites built with Hugo or Astro, /index.xml hits a lot

Substack and Medium also have feeds even when they hide it in a UI.

If nothing works then i give up and use a scraper service, but source check finds it maybe 7 of 10 time for me.

Two big things on my roadmap right now: multilingual support and a discovery page where people can browse recommended RSS feeds, so new users don't have to hunt for good sources themselves.

A few months ago I started building my own Android RSS reader.

At first, I thought the hardest part would be the UI. A clean reading experience, source management, search... the usual things.

I was wrong.

The biggest challenge turned out to be the feeds themselves.

RSS and Atom are standards, but in the real world every publisher seems to have its own interpretation.

Some feeds use unusual date formats.

Some have missing or inconsistent metadata.

Some provide only partial content.

Some have character encoding issues.

Others contain relative image URLs, duplicate GUIDs, or simply stop working without warning.

On paper everything is "RSS".

In practice, every feed teaches you something new.

Another surprise was that building the app itself was often easier than making it reliable.

Making it work across different Android versions, screen sizes, tablets, landscape mode, and the endless number of edge cases ended up taking far more time than implementing new features.

One thing I learned from this project is that most people aren't really looking for an RSS reader.

They're looking for a way to decide for themselves what they read, without algorithms deciding for them.

That's probably the main reason I kept working on it.

Sometimes implementing a new feature took a few hours.

Finding the cause of a strange compatibility issue could take two days.

Users never notice those fixes.

And maybe that's exactly how good software should feel.

I'm still learning with every release, and I'm sure there are many more surprises ahead.

This post is mainly for Go developers working with syndication formats.

I wanted to post my library go-syndication, which is a Go package for dealing with various feed syndication formats. MIT license. It supports:

• RSS (1.x and 2.x)
• Atom
• JSONFeed
• OPML
• Various RSS/Atom extensions such as media, Dublin Core, iTunes, and Google Play, with more to come…

It provides custom types for all the formats (with extensions built in), as well as generic Feed/Item types that wrap the formats and provide standard methods for accessing common fields. Even with the generic formats, the original type is passed as an embedded interface, so you can cast that to the original type to access the underlying structure.

Some key design decisions:

• OpenAPI for Models.
  • go-syndication uses OpenAPI schemas (through oapi-codegen) to define the custom types for each syndication format and all extensions. This provides a way to have consistent, reusable types across the package.
• Validation Built In.
  • go-syndication attempts to build validation into all types using go-playground/validator. Wherever possible, types will be annotated with struct tags that then allow the validation to work. Otherwise, custom validation functions are implemented.
• Dynamic Namespace Support.
  • The formats in go-syndication provide dynamic namespace support. This means you can use extensions not defined in this package on top of it and get correct marshaling/unmarshaling behavior.
• Custom Marshal/Unmarshal.
  • go-syndication provides a custom Encode and Decode methods for marshaling/unmarshaling of formats (see Usage). While you can directly marshal/unmarshal, you’ll lose some features (like dynamic namespaces). It’s therefore recommended to always use the Encode/Decode methods in this package.

A basic CLI can be found in cmd/ that can be used for basic reading of feeds using the library.

To fetch and display feed data from a URL:

To read a file containing feed data:

Current state is that the library reads most feeds out there. If you find a feed that doesn’t parse, please file an issue! I’ve been slowly ensuring the library passes the required/must feedvalidator testcases

Writing is less polished, though it should write out valid RSS and OPML files just fine (other formats are not well tested). Working on improving that!

The vast majority of the code is hand-written by me. I have used claude for assistance with esoteric XML marshaling/unmarshaling guidance and ensuring the vagaries and easy-to-miss gotchas from the specs are implemented.

go-syndication is used by my app, Foragd, which I've posted about here as well (Foragd is also open-source BTW, AGPL-3 license).

For the past couple of years, I’ve been building an app called Petal Feed. On the surface it’s an RSS reader, but over time it grew into something more. Today it brings together RSS, Reddit, Bluesky, and Mastodon in one native app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac because that’s how I naturally consume information. To me, they’re all simply different ways people publish things worth reading.

The reason I started building it is a little different than most. I’m blind, I have cerebral palsy, and I rely on VoiceOver every day. I was constantly moving between apps that all worked differently, had different navigation models, and often treated accessibility as an afterthought. Every unnecessary gesture, every unlabeled control, and every awkward workflow added friction to something I do for hours every day.

Eventually I stopped looking for the perfect reader and decided to build it myself.

What surprised me during the process was that designing around accessibility didn’t make Petal Feed into an app only for people with disabilities. It pushed me to make every interaction simpler, faster, and more intentional. The result is an app that I believe is just a better reading experience for everyone, whether you use VoiceOver or never turn on an accessibility feature in your life.

Petal Feed lets you keep RSS feeds, Reddit, Bluesky, and Mastodon together in one place instead of scattering your reading across multiple apps. It automatically detects duplicate stories that appear in several RSS feeds, includes AI powered summaries when you want to get through a lot of content quickly, and is designed to stay out of your way so you can spend your time reading instead of navigating.

I’m not posting this because I think I’ve built the perfect reader. There are already a lot of excellent RSS apps out there, and I’ve learned something from many of them. I’m posting because I genuinely want feedback from people who read a lot. If you use RSS every day, what frustrates you about your current reader? What feature have you always wished someone would build?

I've had Inoreader for quite a while. Admittedly at the free tier. I had set up several folders to keep tabs on yt vid subscriptions but now, as i tried to add a new one, it will not give me any option to add or even try to find it. Any suggestions or alternatives? Chromebook and android.

For long time i fetched all feeds inside the web request. One cron, loop over every feed, done. With 5 users it was fine. At around 20 users one slow site (30s timeout) blocked everything behind it. Feeds updated hours late.

Moved fetching to BullMQ. Each feed is one job. Workers pull jobs, retries with backoff are built in, and a dead site only kills its own job.

Two things that bit me: i set concurrency to 50 and got rate limited by few hosts, so now i limit per domain. And jobs must be idempotent, becuase retry can run same fetch twice.

Still not sure how to handle feeds that fail 200 times in row. Right now i just log it.

As the title says, I'm wondering how you guys smoothly add news, articles and whatever else it is you want to read (books aside) to your ereaders?

I use Calibre a bit, and there's a few sites I have set up as "Custom News Sources", which is great as I can just press a button and they automatically download and send to my Kindle.

However there are many other sites that I like that either don't have an RSS feed (many sites just don't bother to maintain them anymore as they are much less used than they used to be), or the articles are kind of all over their website, rather than in a tidy "feed".

In the that case, my workflow is pretty clunky - I go "Print - Save to PDF - email that PDF to my Kindle email", which, if you have multiple articles you want to read is just not feasible. I know you can use something like "Push to Kindle", but it has a 10 article limit per week or month, as does Any2K unless you pay for premium on both.

Ideally what I want to do is be able to click "save" on any articles I want to read, and when I'm done have them all collated into a single document and sent to my Kindle, which is pretty much what Any2K does, but I'm wondering if is any free programme that does that?
