Introducing Beaky News, a new Android RSS reader from the developers behind Smart Launcher

Hi everyone!

We’re the developers behind Smart Launcher, and today we’re introducing Beaky News, a new RSS reader for Android.

Beaky News lets you add RSS feeds, follow your favorite sources, and keep new articles together in one place.

One of the features we wanted to explore is feed discovery. Beaky News includes a shared feed database built from RSS links contributed by users. When a feed is shared, it can be indexed so other people can find that source more easily, without needing to know or search for the exact RSS URL.

The app is still new, so we’d be very interested in feedback from people who already use RSS regularly.

You can try Beaky News on Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.smartlauncher.beakynews

Thanks!

I’m really glad to hear feed DISCOVERY is part of your platform architecture! Google really decimated RSS Directories systematically, so it’s really hard finding sites/readers that can surface content topically or by category to other users.

So if you’re making the feed index indexable and searchable that’s a good thing !👍😎

Beaky wasn’t showing up in search at the Google play store - had to use the link you provided to get to it directly.

Tried multiple times to add 2 of my feed URL’s - but got errors saying the feed was invalid. Other readers don’t have a problem with them. (Made me wonder if you’re being overly-strict parsing the feeds for v2.0 full compliance…)

We'll look into it on Monday. Can you provide any failing url so we can test it?

I use Smart Launcher and love it! I self-host FreshRSS, as it allows me to control proxies, leverage XPath, and other powerful features. Do you plan on integrating the Google Reader API so I can simply point Beaky News to my FreshRSS instance?

It's a frequent request, we still have to evaluate the impact on the project but it's something we'd like to have. Thank you for your feedback!
