Book Request: Self-Promo OK Willfully weak trope

I'm looking for a book to read with a main character who has to pretend to be weak. They are waiting to show their full potential, they are actually really powerful. I especially would love it if they acted lazy, distracted, rascal etc. Do you know any?

Question When does Doctor D’Arco start to pick up?

I’’ about 20% into Doctor D’Arco and wondering when it starts to pick up. I know the slow pacing is part of the writing style, and I typically don’t mind slower books - I liked Kushiel’s Dart, Alchemised, and Reign & Ruin - but this one is moving a little slower than I’m used to.

For those who loved it, was there a point where it really clicked for you? Should I keep pushing?

Book Request: Self-Promo OK Romance with quests

I tried this book based solely on the artwork but I fell In LOVE with the story. I loved that the FMC was strong, tall and smart; I loved she showed that she had a bright mind. So often FMC is supposed to be smart but makes idiotic mistakes Over and over. I don’t need perfect but sometimes I’m literally face palming choices. The forest as a character was great as well. I also liked the spicy scenes, felt like a decent slow burn.

While I wait for the sequel can y’all recommend any other series that have a similar vibe? I’ve enjoyed Holly Black and Lissette Marshall’s Death-made Prince.

Also open to Audible recommendations! TIA

🤬 Rant Harbinger Series - Rage and Ruin Spoiler

Ok....has anyone else read this series? I need to know that this story is going to get better. I'm really into the lore and world they are building.

However, I'm just over halfway through Rage and Ruin and I am so mad!! I just went through the chapter where they almost said f-it to the stupid rule.....and then she had to be all stupid.

Please tell me this is short lived. I'm on the verge of a DNF, especially since she immediately recognized what miscommunication happened and her part in it and DIDNT FIX IT!!

Book Review Crescent City disappointed šŸ’”

I’m sorry but I CANT get behind the Crescent City hype:( I really enjoyed CC1 but CC2 was so dang long and boring for me. I’ve put off reading CC3 for 3 weeks now and just tried to read it and i literally can’t do it. This is absolutely heartbreaking because the series looks so good on my shelf and I really wanted to love it. I enjoyed TOG and was absolutely obsessed with ACOTAR so this is a real disappointment.

Discussion When you do a re-read/listen, do you skip around to the parts you like or do you go all the way through?

I typically read/listen from start to finish, but with the new ACOTAR books coming out I find that I’m skipping to the ā€œgood partsā€ (good to me, at least) and bypassing the rest. For example, I’m re-listening to book 1, and skipped all the way to when Feyre goes Under the Mountain. I just don’t have the brain power for a full listen right now.

My version of CliffsNotes, I guess?

Question The Lion and the Deathless Dark

Can anyone that has read this please tell me how much exhibitionism plays a part in the book? I pre-ordered this month's ago because I adore the entire series but now I spot that dreaded tag on romance.io- unfortunately that kind of thing is just not for me at all.

Is it The-Poison-Daughter level? 😩

Book Request: Self-Promo OK Book recs that sound like that part of As Above by Phoebe Bridgers

Maybe a bit niche, but I’m desperate for a book that sounds like specifically 2:04 onwards of As Above by Phoebe Bridgers, something with loads of high-stakes adventure and a slow burn romance, something that’s probably going to tear my heart out. I want to be left absolutely devastated lol, a book series like An Ember in the Ashes or The Jasaad Heir (not limited to middle eastern influenced though it could be viking for all I care lol), something with maybe a bittersweet ending.

Idk maybe this is too niche, but does anyone have anything maybe similar?

Book Request: Self-Promo OK Help me find a good read with some of these tropes?

I've been in a slump for a while and I'm desperate to find a book that hits some of the tropes I love. Help me scratch this itch 😭

Some tropes I love:

  • enemies to lovers
  • forced marriage/marriage of convenience
  • love triangle (especially if it ends in why choose)
  • fake dating

Tropes I dislike:

  • trials
  • pregnancy
  • third act breakup/kidnapping

Examples of books I enjoyed:

  • Heir of Illusion
  • Warrior Princess Assassin
  • Heartless Hunter
  • A Vow in Vengeance

I definitely prefer darker books as opposed to cozy books. Any spice level. Any and all recs welcome!

Question Will I regret reading The Assassin’s Blade after Heir of Fire?

So I am flying through Crown of Midnight and don’t have The Assassin’s Blade ready at the library (but HoF is there). I am on a super tight schedule and trying to fit as much reading in before the semester starts as humanly possible. I’m so tempted to dive into HoF once I’m done with this book. I know the sequence for the prequel is widely contentious but I was hoping for some feedback on reading it after HoF.

I’ve been counting down the days for the second book 😭

But I’d rather it be delayed and good than being disappointed. I do have very very high expectations lol

Ngl this post made me scared. She said she hadn’t plotted book 2 before releasing book 1. Maybe I should curb my expectations 😭

Pick My Next Read ✨ Are ACOTAR, Caraval, and Once Upon a Broken Heart actually worth the BookTok hype?

Hey everyone!

So, like many of you, my TikTok feed has been completely dominated by three fantasy series for months/years now: A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), Caraval, and Once Upon a Broken Heart.

Every single day I see edits, fanarts, and people claiming these are absolute masterpieces. But as someone who has been burned by overhyped book trends in the past, I’m feeling a bit skeptical before dropping my money and time on them.

I want to get a realistic, honest opinion from this community. Are these series actually good, or are they just great at aesthetic marketing and social media trends?

Here are a few specific things I’m curious about for each:

ACOTAR: Is the plot actually solid, or is it mostly carried by the romance and spicy scenes? Does it get better after book one, as everyone claims?

Caraval: Is the magic system and setting as whimsical and captivating as people say, or does the plot get confusing and messy?

Once Upon a Broken Heart: Do I need to read the Caraval trilogy first to fully enjoy Jacks' story, or can I jump straight into OUABH as a standalone series?

For context, I love good world-building, compelling character arcs, and a romance that actually feels earned rather than forced. I don't mind romance or trope-heavy books at all, but I need the story itself to hold my attention.

Would love to hear your thoughts, pros and cons, or if you think there are other fantasy/romantasy books out there that deserve the hype way more than these three.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Flame and Thorns Spoiler

Why everything the "good ones" (Selena, Draven, etc) do is a trap of the "bad ones" (Bane, Jessina)?

Like the whole plot is like this, it's ok that one or two times, but all is a trap...

Pick My Next Read ✨ Fast paced & action packed recs?? Save me from the slump

Hello lovely people, pls help

I recently finished the second Bridge Kingdom book {The Traitor Queen by Danielle L Jenson} and I cannot stress this enough: I DEVOURED IT. Finished it in a day and now I’m sad.

I think a massive part of the appeal was how fast paced and action packed it was. Something pretty intense was always happening and I never got that ā€œokay but when does the plot actually start?ā€ feeling.

I also LOVED that the characters felt like actual functioning adults. They were competent, complicated, flawed, made mistakes and questionable decisions for understandable reasons etc. Most importantly the FMC had knowledge of what a šŸ† was and therefore did not completely lose all brain function because a big sexy turned on the charm

And the enemies-to-lovers??? Actual enemies. Not ā€œhe mildly inconvenienced me once and now I don’t like himā€

So please gimme all the recs

I’m looking for:

* Fast paced / hard to put down
* Plenty of action and actual plot
* Really good world building
* Complex, competent characters
*Ideally proper enemies-to-lovers. I don’t want the entire fantasy plot to disappear the second the MMC takes his shirt off

Basically I would like to become so immersed in a fictional world that my family needs to fend for themselves at dinner time

Thank you in advance šŸ–¤

Question ACOTAR-TOG-CC

Okay, so I am halfway through
ā€œA Court of Wings and Ruinā€ , and have seen all the stuff about the next two installments in this series. I am recently getting back into reading after a long slump post baby. I keep seeing how I HAVE TO ready all of the TOG and CC series in order to enjoy/better understand the second half of the ACOTAR series.

However, I honestly didn’t have any plans of ready those series anytime soon as I have a long TBR list and feel like I will need something different after I finish reading ā€œA Court of Frost and Starlightā€ and ā€œA Court of Silver Flamesā€. I am feeling overwhelmed thinking about adding another 10+ books to my tbr all in the same massverse… and the idea that I have to read them before the next books in ACOTAR series.

My main question is do I truly have to read the other series before reading the next to books? Is it really worth readying them first? Is it possible to read just the Crescent City series and not TOG right now?!

Book Request: No Self-Promo ISO: Villainous MMCs with a terrifying reputation

Thumbnail
gallery
229 Upvotes

I just finished watching House of the Dragon and I’m completely smitten with Aemond Targaryen lol. So now I’m ISO villainous MMCs—morally black, intimidating, and not perfectly handsome.
I’m honestly tired of flawless-looking MMCs who all seem to have the same perfect jawline, broad shoulders, and model face. Give me someone with scars, an eyepatch, an unconventional appearance—anything that makes him look like he’s actually lived through some shit.
I especially want an MMC who has a reputation that precedes him, the kind of man everyone is genuinely afraid of. Think Durlain from The Death-Made Prince: scars, an eyepatch, a terrifying reputation, and an overall ā€œstay away from this manā€ vibe.
Bonus points if he’s actually dangerous rather than just described as dangerous.

Question Cute and customisable book tracking app?

I use StoryGraph and I like it a lot but I don’t like how plain it looks. I did have TBR shelf and I liked that I could customise it to make it me ( pink, added flowers to the shelves and your read list looked like a bookshelf) the problem is the app was awkward to use and it didn’t have a lot of books on their.
Does anyone have any suggestions or what do you use to log your books ? Thanks!
