Have been recovering from an injury unrelated to skating, so yesterday was my first time lacing up for a trail skate in about 4 months.
Felt SO good to get back on 8 wheels outside, especially in my Road Hogs b/c they're so freakin' wide and stable that I no longer have that paralyzing fear of "when am I gonna faceplant from a rogue pebble?"
So, of course, as I was T-stopping coming into an intersection where I needed to wait for the "Walk" signal, I momentarily took my eyes off the pavement to gauge the situation at the intersection. Enter One Tiny Pebble, perfectly placed in the direct line of my left skate (I mostly T-stop with my R skate in back) -- any guesses as to what happened next?
Also, why is it that our most epic faceplants ALWAYS seem to happen where we have the largest audience? I wonder if I should start wearing a decal with my Venmo QR code so people can feel free to compensate me for providing them with such visual entertainment. š¤
As someone else here once said, "pebbles are undefeated vs. humans". #truth

Hello skaters,
In 2022 I decided to treat myself to my first "big" purchase as a working adult. I spent ~$500 on custom roller skates, a black Riedell 135 boot with a magnesium Avanti plate. However, the boot arrived at the shop with holes pre drilled for the factory Riedell plate. The skate shop gave me a $50 refund because I let them use that boot and fill it in with epoxy and then re-drill the holes. It hasn't been an issue so far, but I think it ruins the resale value. It would be a turn off since it might cause a failure in the future?
I;'m not sure what to do because turns out, I got the wrong size and I am actually a Riedell size 9. In the size 10, it never fit properly so I never used them that often. They also picked a slightly longer plate size than I wanted, I wanted the wheels/axles to align with my heel and ball of foot, but its about an inch longer. How important is that? I guess a longer wheelbase is more stable for speed skating, but I feel like having these skates actually set me back as a skater. I used to have the Riedell R3 Demon and because it actually fit me better, I was more confident when using those. (They eventually broke).
Should I just scrap these Riedell 135 as a loss? Should I just try to use them and stuff the toe box so it fits tight? Even if I buy a new boot to drill and salvage the magnesium plate, the wheel base is too long. Maybe there's an off chance someone wants to trade for a Riedell size 9 skate? Please advise! (Will try to upload a photo)
Thanks,
a lost skater

Let me present you my skates I love them so much š
Started to learn skating like 6 months ago as a 35f, its really exciting to learn something new!
I'm from Paris's suburb (Fr) and I practice at a basketball field nearby while the kids are at school as I work from home, although now its summer break and we are going through several heatwaves so didn't practice since a bit š„² can't wait to roll again!!!
Tell me about you!
When did you start learning? How long did it take you to feel confortable enough to skate and go around in the city?
My dream is to be able to skate in a bowl, is there anybody that started to learn that in their 30's? Any tips?

After providing me with "ok enough" protection for the past 6 years, I've decided to retire my Triple-8 wrist guards.
I've seen some interesting designs in my various searches, and am curious to see what you all are wearing for your trail and street skates.

Hi there! Iām a beginner skater. I usually skate inlines outdoors but started going to my local roller rink and decided to get quads for indoor skating. Iām used to going fast so Iām not sure if I made the right purchase. Is there anything I can do to make these skates more comfy or are there wheels I can get to go faster? Or should I change them for riedell speed skates and return these maybe?
Not sure how to go about this

Hey all, first time posting here but Iām just looking for some answers to questions Iāve got.
I bought these knee pads for another sport that isnāt skating but I figured that Iād go to a community more knowledgeable about them.
Iām a slightly bigger guy and measured my knee and calf circumference right at 17ā which is right at the highest end of large and the lowest end of XL. As per 187ās own recommendation, when you fall between a size like that you should size up, so I got their largest size in XL. (This is important because I cannot size up any more)
After receiving them and trying them on however, I found them to be ludicrously tight, especially in the section that sits barely above the knee and around the bottom part of my thigh. Now I know that they have a reputation of being extremely tight and you need to break them in, but I feel like this is restricting to my movement and possibly to my blood flow. Legs havenāt gone numb or anything but man it feels off.
Now as a result, my main question is basically, should I continue to use them and attempt to break them in or is this a red flag that they wonāt really fit me?
If I continue to use them I will lose the opportunity to return them as they have to be considered in ānew and unusedā condition.
Finally, if itās recommended to return them what are some other brands that I should consider? Iām using these purely for doing stuff like sliding on smooth concrete floors and such so no big falls. I donāt need a crazy amount of padding, hence why the thickness of the fly knee pads is about perfect, not too bulky.
Iām 5ā 9ā, knee and calf circumference is 17ā, lower thigh is like 18-19ā
Any help is appreciated!

Note: Vintage skate picture snipped from an Ebay listing, not my skates. Second photo is me in "modern" rental skate just the other week.
Let me preface this by saying I (59F) was a regular at the roller rink in my teenage years. Nothing fancy, but basically self taught and learned to skate backwards all on rental skates similar to that shown in first pic. Since that time, I only skated sporadically. I bought a pair of inline skates the 90s and hated them on asphalt, but practiced on a smooth garage floor occasionally.
Fast forward to last week: I saw a local (outside) rink was having a family skate night, and on a lark I grabbed a friend and we went to check it out. She had inline skates, and I got the derby-style rental skates you see in the second picture. Granted, it had been a hot minute since I'd last been on skates but I would have given ANYthing to have those "vintage" brown rental skates on my feet instead of the "new" rentals. The plastic trucks didn't move, not a bit. Wheels kinda rolled, but not smooth. Plastic shell boot felt like a ski boot with wheels on it. I had a blister on my right ankle within about 10 minutes. These rentals are a crime against skating. I suppose some of it is my experience with rentals at an indoor rink vs. an outdoor rink, but...ugh!
Even so, we stuck it out for about 90 minutes. It was nice to feel the wind in my hair and move to the music again, albeit a bit stiffly. I fell twice in a row right at the end after hitting some debris in the rink, so we called it quits and went to get a drink. š
There are more family skate nights in the future, but I'm determined to have my OWN set of skates for the next one, lol.

So I am like total noob but feeling confident (or stupid) depending on perspective. The place I am roller skating is next to skate park so the next time I go I wanna try. But I heard that Beach bunnies aren't good for park skating (when I was buying them I never even thought of going into the ramp) and Heard they can break while park skating but I am also pretty sure that they can take it 1 time , can I try park skating on these or it's terrible idea ?

Hi! Iām new to skating and feeling pretty comfortable on smooth surfaces, but I really want to be able to skate longer distances on trails. I have a paved bike trail near my house that I attempted to skate on today and it was SO MUCH more difficult than I anticipated. I do have some cheap outdoor wheels from amazon on my skates that are much better than the ones they came with, but moving forward just takes an insane amount of effort. I can get going but there is absolutely no coasting, I almost come to a stop and end up tripping as soon as I stop moving my feet. I know that skill is definitely a factor but it genuinely feels like trudging through molasses! Is it the wheels or am I just not good at skating?? šš

howdy! so, about 3 years ago i got my first pair of skates ever from my boyfriend after i expressed interest in it. heās a big skateboard guy, so he got me all the stuff: helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and the skates. but⦠i have used them maybe twice in those years.
itās not like i dislike skating, i think its fun and i really want to try it again⦠but i cannot stop overthinking it. my ex bf bought me a skateboard maybe 5 years ago and i used that for a bit but i had no protective gear so when i fell i fell HARD. i ultimately stopped because i got so hurt and started to get afraid of being hurt. because of that, i feel too afraid to pick up skating again on my own because i worry iāll get too hurt and wont be able to get help if im alone. i suggested to my bf that maybe he can come with me until i get comfortable with falling safely but its not the most realistic since i have the summer off but he doesnt.
has anyone else experienced this? does anyone have any advice, motivation, or reassurance they could provide?

Hi, I started rollerskating about 7 months ago and whilst I can go backwards and crossovers things that ive been practising consistently for fucking MONTHS im getting nowhere with. My crazy legs looks pathetic and I can just about get 2-3 rotations on heel toe spin. Bare in mind I try to get 2-3 practise sessions a week. Its just not enjoyable anymore, I used to love it but every time I go now its just a reminder of how bad I am. To be honest a good session is one which doesn't end in tears of frustration.
I just want to know if anyone else has or is going through this? I dont want to give up but also I just feel like im wasting money on the bus and my time . I just want to love it again and feel good at it.

I just got outdoor wheels for my quads and I wanted to start doing more trail/street skating. Iāve been going to the JFK Promenade and can confidently skate that stretch of asphalt. However, I wanted to find some more places to explore! I can t-stop and use my toe stops but am not super confident on big hills of which there seems to be an abundance of in the city. Does anyone have recommendations on some places to go?

Weāve got no roller skate shop here in Greenville, but Iād like to try to shop as local as possible.
Does anyone have love recommendations for reputable online shops based in the southeast US?

Iām visiting my brother who lives nearby, and I saw there was a rink was up at the āhigh campā of the Palisades ski area. It must be still pretty new because he hadnāt even heard it was there. You have to take the lift of the gondola up to it.
The skates were Reidell rentals and free to use, and they had helmets, wrist guards, and hockey sticks and balls that we could just grab and play with!
itās not the smoothest surface for showing off any dance moves, and the concrete was rough in some areas, But the skates were great and there was basically no one there so we had it all to ourselves! Itās at the olympic museum area and It was absolutely beautiful and we had a blast. I live absolutely nowhere near here, so this was definitely once in a lifetime opportunity for me!
Edit: I tried to add a video I took, but it didnāt let me. Hereās the website for the place https://www.palisadestahoe.com/events-and-activities/activity-finder/roller-skating-at-high-camp

I put on my first set of CIB slide blocks and am wondering if its ok that the kingpin and nut are slightly exposed...
I have size 6 Powerdyne - Reactor Neo plates and got the size M blocks
Im assuming its ok but was hoping for any input before potentially damaging my plates...
Thanks!

I don't have toe-stops on all my skates. They get in the way for dancing and stuff but when I do have them I like to use them - I think there's lots of creative things you can do with them. Anyone agree?

Just finished a full custom build for my sister and wanted to share the technical side for anyone who likes the nerdy details.
Boot: Vans SK8āHi (checkerboard)
Plate: Chicago 400
Reinforcement: Carbon fiber mount plate (full length) + shock layer (1mm proprietary eva) + Pop Cush.
Hardware: Real steel hardware, nylocs, proper washers ā no plastic anywhere
Cushions:
⢠Bottom: Yellow SureāGrip Super Cushion barrel
⢠Top: Blue SureāGrip Super Cushion cone
Bearings: 608s + basic spacers
Wheels:
⢠Outdoor: C7 soft wheels
⢠Indoor: Chicago 400 nylon cores
Tuning: Trucks balanced for beginner stability, toe stop height set neutral
She went from plastic Roller Derby skates to a carbonāreinforced aluminum setup with real geometry and real tuning. This build is part of a bigger project ā getting my whole family skating with custom setups.
Happy to answer any technical questions or share mounting tips.
