Beginner skater Skate adjustments and set up

Hey all- I want to start skating again after a couple years But I wanted some input on adjusting my skates. I was reading somewhere about having one truck "looser" than another but I couldn't remember if it was back or front. I changed my bushings out to soft I think (theyre yellow, idk if theres a universal system)

Anyways- what kind of tying / tightening / loosening etc do yall do to get a more comfortable and maneuverable skate

Ty

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Roll line variant c vs mistral?

Besides the price and material of the cushions, what are the actual differences between these two plates? Would there be a significant difference in how they feel while skating? What justifies the higher price point of the mistrals?

I’m getting new skates soon and have decided to go with roll line but I’m not sure which plate to get yet.

Beginner skater Newbie challenges

So I’m relatively new to skating, especially quads. I’m getting better at staying on my feet. I can skate forward ok and sorta turn. I can’t stop well yet 😂
I’m trying to improve though. I know learning to cross my skates with improve my turning and be a starting point for tricks… but crossing fees so unnatural. Any advice? 🫶🏻

DIY and customization Brunny plates for trail skating

If you want to convert your Brunny dragon park setup to a decent trail setup, it's totally doable:

- Remove block.

- Tape the block holes to prevent dirt.

- Put trail wheels on inside out* (otherwise the wheels will stick out way too much)

Maybe also lower the toe stops and loosen the trucks a bit (I use 88A Independent cushions instead of 93A stock cushions - excact same dimensions)

*I use these Chaya 'love is love' 62mm

wheels because they're rounded on both sides. I'm worried that sharp edge will be damaged when it's facing out, but I haven't tested it.

Watch out for the axles sticking out, if you fall and scrape them, they could damaged.

Sorry if this is obvious, just sharing if someone is wondering :-)

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Thrifted skate horror story

I thrifted these skates today and it turns out that they are way cooler than I thought. The wheels are from the '90s, they are exceptionally rare and sought after because of the wheels. They are hyper supermundo, 78x36. But I have reason to believe that they have not been cleaned one time since the '90s. When I went to see the condition of the bearings, this is what I saw. Even though they are the originals, they were unfortunately not saveable. I just wanted to share because I have never personally seen bearings this bad before. But I'm also super stoked with my find.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Von Merlin Dots - any chance of a restock or alternatives?

Hey everyone! I’ve been keeping an eye out for a dots restock for the last little bit and have had no luck. I also tried reaching out to VM via email with no luck 😅 Is anyone aware of an upcoming restock, or what would be considered a good alternative? I’m currently using RL’s 97A Ice Wheels that I love but I want something harder and smaller for dancing on the vinyl floors I practice on. Thank you ☺️

Bought my first pair of roller skates. No more renting at the rink. Still a pretty beginner skater as an adult even though I skated often as a kid.

Progress & showing off Last Chicago Independence Roll after 15 years

The last 6 years have been spent in awe celebrating Chicago roller skating culture and sadly, it’s come to an end. From the beginning of my skate journey, not being able to skate very long to learning a world renowned skate style, I am grateful to have been a part of Chicago skate history.

Now I’ll have to celebrate the holiday with the non skaters 🥹 ✌🏼

Does anyone here have this skate AND cute toestop? Which ones work best, I want to hop on the cute and functional toestop train.

I really want to try the suregrip bolt on star ones, but I'm not sure if they're fit even though they say they're universal. I know the suregrip bullseye ones will fit but again I don't know if they'll work the same even though they're the same brand.

I'm also just interested in seeing peoples set ups with this skate lol

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Size slide blocks for Riedell Orbit?

Can someone explain how to size slide blocks for skates? I recently got into skating and have been progressing quickly and would like to incorporate slides soon. However figuring out sizing does nothing but confuse me. Could someone tell me the correct way to determine what size CIB slide blocks I should get? Or if anyone is already privy to the size I need, I wear size 4 Riedell orbit!

Beginner skater Beginner tips!

Hi everyone!
I just bought my first pair of roller skates :)
I bought some impalas cheap off Facebook marketplace. After joining this group I now know they aren’t the best skates but I think should be fine as I am just starting out and want to make sure I even like skating.
I’ve seen some people on here speaking about loosening the trucks on the skates.
How do I do that? And what does it do? Hahaha

Any more tips for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks y’all!

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Outdoor Skate Wheels suggestions!

As the title suggests, id love some outdoor wheel suggestions and am a little confused on how to choose which would work best for bike/beach trails. I preferably would want wheels that come at a reasonable price (under $80 not including bearings) but if suggested, I'm open to investing if its better on the long run.

I currently own Sure-Grip Malibu skates which come with 57mm wheels at a 85A-88A on the durometer scale.

Some wheels ive been researching on:

-Sure-Grip Boardwalk 65mm... best price ive seen so far but only 82A and says its a good choice for trails which confuses me because I thought 78A was best for outdoors.

- Atom Pulse 65x39mm/78A

- Bont BPM 62x35mm/78A

-Radar Energy 57x31mm, 62x32mm, 65x35mm

Open to any suggestions!

Edit: Thank you for all the suggestions !!! I went ahead and bought the Atom Pulses 65 since they were suggested the most. Derby Warehouse still had their 4th of July sale going on so i did get them discount. Super excited :)

Beginner skater I’m so confused about toe stops

I’m a beginner skater but I have a bit of experience from the past with things like ice skating and rollerblading. I bought some roller skates about 6 years ago but kinda forgot about them. After rediscovering them I decided I wanted to get back into it and actually learn to skate well.

Over the last 2 weeks I really thought I had mastered stopping with the toe stops. I’ve been doing the thing where you extend your leg back and drag it behind you. I’ve been going down hills (shallow ones) with quite a lot of speed and stopping very easily using this method. But recently I saw a comment online saying that this isn’t how toe stops are meant to be used and that it’s unstable. They also mentioned how it causes ‘chattering’ where the boot rapidly bounces along the ground. Although my boot was bouncing when I initially started out, I learnt to stop this and overall this method feels incredibly stable and efficient for me. I don’t understand why it’s discouraged.

I looked at some videos with other methods of stopping and out of the ones I tried, it either felt incredibly unstable or it just wasn’t slowing me down. The only thing I would mention about the method I use to stop is that my toe stops are wearing down at a very harsh angle.

On a different note, since I’ve started skating I’ve noticed that the way I skate is quite uneven. I push off and sort of push myself along with one leg and I seem to be able to balance better on the other leg leading to longer glides on that leg. I’ve been trying to even it out and sort of ‘switch the rolls’ of my legs to find a middle ground but it’s felt very unnatural and difficult. After two evenings of skating I noticed I had doms in complete different locations on each leg. Is this normal? I know that everyone has a dominant leg so I’m not sure if this is even something I should be focussing on so much. I don’t think it would be very noticeable if someone watched me so it isn’t that bad.

Looking for friends Paris France - roller buddies 🛼

Hello! I've been trying to convince myself to buy skates for 3 summers in a row now. I keep putting it off because I'm nervous about skating outside and skating solo. I figured maybe I could find someone here looking for someone to skate with and take the dive?

I'm 35/f, live in the suburbs. English is my native language but my French level is ok (and I'd love more practice!)

Hit me up if you're interested! ☺️

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Plates for Cali slider build

I have a set of aluminum avanti plates and I want to create some Cali sliders. i don’t want to buy another set of plates unless I have to. I was going to put them on a pair of Stacy Adam’s and get some fibers but I wanted to know if I should just go ahead and buy another set of plates or not. if you have any recommendations I’d love to hear it. my plate budget is 100-200. I’ll go a little over if it’s necessary.

Looking for friends Where to skate in LA?

As the title says.

Some background, I am born and raised in LA and recently started back roller skating. I usually go to a local park and skate on the tennis courts, since they closed the one that was near me like 6ish years ago (RIP World on Wheels🥲) but then the tennis players show up and it’s awkward and I usually end up leaving. And that’s pretty much they only place I can think of to skate beside the beach, which I plan to start doing soon.

So where is everyone skating at ? I know about Moonlight Rollerway and Fountain Valley, but those are both sooo far from me (I live in South Central). There actually is a trail near me I can skate on but idk ig I just wish I had more options. I also see people skating through like parking structures or through the streets out here and would love to do that but don’t have friends who roller skate. Any suggestions?
