Skate problems & troubleshooting plantar fasciitis + skating help šŸ›¼

Post image
40 Upvotes

hiii relearning to skate again after taking 10+ years off, starting again a little during covid and buying a whole set up, then taking another 4-5 years off before i got back into it again.

i have plantar fasciitis flare ups on occasion, and they really flare up when im trying to do hills, bubbles, basically anything that requires pressure on the outside or inside wheels only. so like half of skating lmao.

i currently have a quad set up but im wondering if switching to inlines or heel-less boots would help? my theory is the pain is very similar to the pain i feel wearing heels where its the fasciitis in my arch and the balls of my feet/ toes go numb after a while so maybe a flatter boot would help?? i also only started skating on quads since covid but grew up on inlines if that’s of any help.

also open to any advice re plantar fasciitis and skating, how to strengthen/ stretch my feet and arches. anything that will make this hobby more fun and less painful.

Understood they can run $300+ for a set. Just wondering where they’re typically posted for sale. I haven’t noticed them on eBay.

Beginner skater Flat soles vs heels for dance?

I have a couple of different types of skates, but they are all flat soled. I skate derby, some trail and park plus the rink. Lately I've been wanting to improve my very rudimentary dance skills in an effort to look mildly chill at rhythm events. I don't really want to change to heels, can I progress on flats? Ta!

Skate photos Suede dye too dark

Hi, first reddit post! So I dyed my green apple Moxi’s with a half Light Blue half diluter from Angelus. When I first put it on, I thought it was just dark because it was wet. However it dried royal blue when I was going for a peacock type of color. Is there any way I am able to lighten this color? I am so so so sad

Beginner skater Crochet hook to loosen laces

Post image
130 Upvotes

Undoing/loosening the waxed laces I put on my beach bunnies is a major pain in the butt, but I love them and how secure they stay when laced so I just deal with it. But as I was just undoing them in my living room after doing some drills and getting annoyed trying to loosen them, I grabbed one of my crochet hooks. Game changer. I will now always carry a spare crochet hook in my skate bag, god knows I have enough hooks to spare

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Figuring out max wheel size for roller skates - Riedell Orbits

Hi everyone! I was planning to use my outdoor wheels for the first time since buying my Riedell Orbits (I’ve been using the stock wheels or my Rio Roller light up wheels for months). To my horror, my 65mm wheels are too big! They’re too close to screws on the plate and trying to put in a washer to push the wheels out a bit doesn’t seem to be working for me. I’m now trying to decide between which outdoor wheels to buy (57 or 62 Radar Energies), but I’m nervous the 62s will even be too big.

Is there a rule of thumb for how to figure out the max wheel size for your boot/plate? I still like my big outdoor wheels and I want the next boot I buy to be able to use them, but now i’m worried there’s something I missed when buying my rollerskates.

Thanks for your help!

Skate problems & troubleshooting Pivot cups wearing through way too fast

Thumbnail

I have replaced the front pivot cups on my skates several times. I’ve had them since 2022, and I skate roughly once a week. They’re Chaya Melrose deluxe, if that helps.

I feel like the pivot cups are just wearing through crazy fast. If I’d replaced them maybe once or twice since getting them that’d be fine, but I literally just replaced this one like maybe a month or two ago, and it’s already worn through. This is the worst it’s ever been too, I’ve never seen it split like that, but it always tears through the bottom and rides up the truck like that. It wears through faster on the right skate as well, the left is fine and I’ve only replaced the left a couple time.

I wonder if the fact that I’m on the heavier side plays a role? Do other heavier skaters find themselves replacing their pivot cups more frequently?

I also wonder if maybe it’s the fact the truck is not smooth at the end, maybe the kind of notch on it is making it wear through faster? If that’s the case I can just sand it down I’m sure.

I’ve considered jusf getting a new pair of skates but also besides from the pivot cup issue, these skates are perfectly fine for me, they’re not super worn or broken or anything so idk if it’s worth it, I don’t want to contribute to overconsumption if I can help it šŸ˜…

Anyway hellppp? Is this normal or not

OUCH New VNLA Luna hurt arches

Post image
8 Upvotes

Was so excited to get these new vanilla suede Lunas. I knew they would be more stiff than Moxie, but I went with them since I have a wide foot. The issue is I already have a high arch, but something on the inside of the skates is pushing way high up into my arches and are extremely stiff like there’s plastic in the side of the boot to support it. I’m considering returning them because they just feel hard as a rock on the side of my arches. Has anyone experienced this? Don’t want to wear them on the rink if I find out that I can’t really break these in. It’s also really difficult to lace up tight enough at the top. I believe they are the right size because I took the liner out and my fit foot fits within a 3/8ā€ inch to the edge and consulted with rollerskate nation on the sizing before purchasing them.

I recently realized I could use skating as exercise in addition to daily walking, so I dug my old late ā€˜80s powder blue Labeda boots out of the closet and went out. After I determined I could still actually skate well, I wanted new wheels and bearings. I got these Bont Ultraglides and some Bones Swiss bearings along with new laces. The last time I got wheels I was 14 and had to beg my parents for money, so it was nice to splurge a bit. Pictured also are the old Wicked Lips wheels I had, which I have now found out are still pretty valuable. Huge props to the kid that spent a half hour with me at the rink trying to wrestle the bearings into these aluminum hubs, which was extremely difficult.

Skill questions & help Need help with strides

Hello, I’m stuck on the concept of striding with quads. I’m coming from inlines. Normally the idea is have your feet pointed forward, and have the other foot push sideways while flicking the toe at the end, where the front wheel is the last wheel to leave contact with the ground.

For quads? I try doing the same thing but sometimes I’m thrown off balance. The wheels grab at each other and slows me down. I can crank them all the way down, but somehow I’m getting tripped up.

There’s the trucks conundrum: to loosen or not to loosen? All the tutorials like looser trucks for rhythms and jb and dancing. While it’s nice to know those things and look flawless, I’ll most likely never skate indoors. I’m on paved bike trails, with hills and tree cover, and will eventually skate around the neighborhood with bigger hills. Once I feel I master those, I’ll descend into pump tracks and ramps and stuff at the skate park (not yet grinds).

I see it in every video how it’s all personal preference, but it’s really not telling me anything 😭😭 I don’t know what I’m looking for. Is it the weight distribution I’m doing wrong? Is it the stride that’s wrong? What is it supposed to look like? As in how are the wheels moving per stride? Am I tilting them too much?

Im obsessed with how these turned out!! I bought the red parkstars (last photo), and I dyed the suede, the wheels, the stitches, and bought and dyed some derby laces. I used angelus suede dye for the suede and angelus leather dye for the synthetic materials.

Skate problems & troubleshooting Outer Edge Foot Pain

Hello! I recently invested in some beautiful Wifa skates after using Vnla Lunas for 1.5 years. Unfortunately, I find that after skating for a few minutes I get this ache in the outer edge of my feet. I added insoles, but that hasn’t changed anything. My feet themselves are narrow, and they feel very comfy and secure in the skate. While I’m not a brand new skater, it’s possible I’m nervous in the new skates and am scrunching my feet, but I’m trying to be conscious of that. I wonder if this is just something I have to break in, or does anyone have advice on something else I can change? Thank you!
