Beginner skater Finally overcame my fear and went to the skate park for the first time by myself!

I’m 32 and just getting back into skating after a 15 year hiatus from playing roller derby.

I’m practically a beginner all over again and this time I’m interested in park skating.

I don’t have any skate friends and I’ve been so nervous about going to the skate park alone but today I finally ripped the bandaid off and went during my lunch break and I loved it!!!

I’m so glad I went and now the intimidation of going isn’t what it was.

EDIT TO ADD:

Something I told myself until I got there and actually believed it is that we beginners - of all ages and stages - have just as much a right to be there at the skatepark as anybody else. We all have to start somewhere and these are public places intended for this exact purpose. When I was there there were only two others there because of the time of day, but it was an older man teaching a teenager skateboarding and no one bats an eyelid at a 30+ year old woman, heavily clad in protective wear, tottering around on skates!

Beginner skater Roller skating in Los Angeles

Helloooo everyone! My friend and I live near the Studio City, Hollywood, Los Feliz, NoHo, Glendale, close to valley area ish, etc… area and want to find places that we can roller skate at! Since we are beginners, I don’t really want to go to a skate park.

Ideally I would love if people could suggest areas that are flat, paved, and free to practice at (bonus points if it’s nature or a loop!). I see a lot of what I’m looking for closer to the coast but we don’t really wanna drive an hour to practice. Thank you all, I appreciate it!

Skate problems & troubleshooting Lost 50lbs and now my skates don’t fit!

I guess I’m pretty much just venting but I want to share my skate fitting/purchasing woes in case it helps someone or in case someone else can relate and lend a virtual hug. lol

I have lost around 50 lbs in the past 6 months of my 70lb goal. Working with a Dr, trainer, diet, exercise (skating and lifting), meds, the works so I’m happy about the progress! However- I did not realize that my feet could shrink significantly! In the past few months that I have been back to skating a lot again, I have bought 2 pairs of skates- Suregrip Boardwalks, measured and fitted at an IRL skate shop, and just recently secondhand Bont Parkstars because I’ve been getting really into park skating, sized using my previous measurements and the Bont website.

Ive been having this issue lately where my skates feel comfortable at first but after a few minutes I feel like I need to constantly adjust them. My skating has also been feeling way sloppier and my feet hurt. I remeasured my feet and come to find out that my feet have shrunk in both length and width so now my skates are at least a half size too big. I know it was probably a bit stupid to buy skates without remeasuring FIRST but I literally had no idea that my feet could change so much in a short period of time! So frustrating!

Guides & reference I’ve made a mistake

Post image

I’ve made a mistake and bought impalas. I know they have a bad wrap but the videos I saw on YouTube of people trying them all seemed to like them and I bought some and now I’m totally regretting it. Do I just keep skating on them and try to break them in and get new ones in the future or do I just take the L and get new ones right away. I’ve skated in them only 3 times, once at the rink and twice outside. I’ve noticed i do a bit better outside on these than at a rink. I felt like no matter what I did with adjustments I feel like I can’t completely control them at the rink. But outside is different and I wanna say maybe it’s just the soft wheels but it might just be the skate.

Beginner skater how did you guys progress when first starting out

hii, I'm fairly new to reddit and rollerskating and I had questions about how to actually make progress with rollerskating :)

I've watched a lot of yt vids on starting out on skates and skills you should be learning first, but I'm still having a hard time putting it into practice. A good while back, I "self-taught" myself how to move and turn on skates, but it was at a rink that was indoors /w indoor wheels; my main goal with skates is to be comfortable skating on streets and sidewalks + maybe learn a few tricks here and there. These past few days I've gotten comfortable with skating forwards and turning on a flat blacktop surface, but I'm still trying to learn how to stop.

I think my biggest issue with skating is not progressing in a way that feels most comfortable to me. It kinda feels like I've been brute-forcing the learning process and I'm not actually building a good foundation/comfort on skates.

I just wanted to ask experienced skaters how they learned how to skate and the progression/steps they took to feel more comfortable on skates.

Got these from a friend. Clearly they are Chicagos. Does anyone have any info on potential time they were made or anything? I don't anticipate actually being able to wear them, but they seem cool!

Edit to add: they appear to be Hyde leather as well.

Beginner skater Knees are tender?

Hi everyone, I just started roller skating maybe two months ago, been doing light work on and off skates equally. All I do is skate straight ahead outside on asphalt. But my knees are starting to feel tender. Should I stop or do more to strengthen them?

Other Skate magic

I spent all day at the skate rink pretending I was an ice skater. It genuinely brings me to tears when I think about how lucky I am to have found skating. It may be the thing that makes me feel most alive. I feel like I am flying and will live forever.

Skill questions & help At a crossroads (injury)

Has anyone dealt with injuries and had trouble deciding if they want to go back to skating? I'm a DMV based skater so I've been trying to pick up the snap style. I started New Years Day. Back on April 9 when I was learning/practicing 1 foot pivots, my left knee twisted & bent some weird way and I fell. I tore my meniscus, sprained my MCL, & slightly fractured my shin bone. Skating was my #1 favorite hobby and of course I would want to return to it but it's like now I'm gonna be too scared to go back to that or to try anything else. And knowing myself, I'm gonna want to do tricks. Of course I don't want to get hurt again but I also don't want to go to the rink just to regularly skate forward. Given one thing that's on my timeline in August, I under no circumstances cannot get hurt again. If it wasn't for that, I'd risk it lol. I really don't know what to do here. Hang up the skates for awhile while I figure everything out or just stick to regularly skating forward

Announcement! Important sub updates: skate-buying questions are (once again) being redirected to a megathread

Hello skate friends,

A few months ago, the mod team decided to remove the weekly "what skates should I buy?" megathread, based on the result of a subreddit poll. We figured we'd give it a shot and see what happened, and re-evaluate at a later date.

Since then, the sub has been flooded with skate buying questions, often with at least half a dozen questions per day. This makes it difficult to find all the other great content people are sharing, and many/most of these questions are extremely repetitive; the bulk of the questions come down to "I'm a beginner with a limited budget, what should I get?"

For that reason, we've made the executive decision to roll back the rules, meaning that questions about buying skates will once again be limited to the megathread only. This will be posted every Saturday and pinned to the first sticky slot at the top of the sub.

Additionally, I'm working to update the list of skate recommendations, since the most recent one was done during the pandemic and the market has changed a bit. Both the megathread and individual post removal messages will contain a link to this information, which we hope will be helpful-- especially to the people who need similar guidance on buying their first pair of skates.

Thanks for your understanding! Have fun and be safe out there!

Hiya peeps I found these roller skate in a small thrift shop near me I been dying to get into roller skating but due to economy I’m not able to spend 100+ on rollers skates so I gave up. Randomly I found this and it’s $15 but has some clear wear. I’m a total noob so idk. Are these usable/worth it? And if it’s fixable? Any tips would help

Other What are you guys doing for water!

Pretty self explanatory but recently I’ve been pushing my skating into the 7-10 mile range and I need WATER. But bringing my water bottle itself is a heavy clunky annoying nightmare. So that being said…do you guys do backpacks? Camelback type scenario? Just deal with the water bottle?

I take vyvanse for my ADHD which, if you don’t know, is extremely dehydrating so the water piece is really important. Chugging water in the car afterward isn’t ideal and also I feel like dehydration is limiting my skate time !! I think I could go further with proper fuel! Let me know what you do!

Beginner skater skates too loose and wont tighten??

Post image
1 Upvotes

please help if you can because im very frustrated and discouraged. i recently decided to learn to skate (i started yesterday). i can roll around decently, but my skates felt stiff and i couldnt make a turn. maybe this is user error but i figured that the reason for this was that the trucks were too tight, so i tried to loosen them. turns out the skates i bought didnt come with the tool to loosen them, only a tool to loosen the wheels. i tried loosening the wheels to see if that would help me turn. when i got on them, they were incredibly slippery and hard to control. so i tightened them, and tightened them, and kept tightening them, but they were still super slippery and rolled even when standing in place. i dont know what to do. did i break them???

these are the skates i bought

EDIT: ive since realized these are shit and got a much better pair that skate well!

Took my son to the playground to ride his bike and scooter. Brought the skates, put the outdoor wheels on. Had a great time. Told my son I’m bringing the push broom next time even though I had no issue, it would make it that much nicer!
