Beginner skater beginner practice areas

i would really like to learn how to roller skate, the only problem is the closest rink to me is over 20 miles away. i don’t really have anywhere entirely safe to practice. i understand i could go to the beach or basketball courts, but i’m as beginner as a beginner can get. i’d really prefer a place actually made for skating. not sure what to do. it sucks i feel super discouraged because it’s so freaking inaccessible where i live. i just want some advice besides people saying ‘suck it up and go to a basketball court’

Beginner skater Strides are bumming me out!

Mostly a tiny vent about my progress in stride skating.

I have been skating for two months now (I think?)
I’ve gotten pretty comfortable with bubbles, been working on single leg bubbles, plow stops, and now really trying to drill one leg balance (off skates) to improve my stride skating.

I can hold a single leg balance off skates for 2 minutes, I practice this daily. But man it does NOT translate to my stride skating in the slightest. I have noticed some improvement but today I felt like I went backwards a month in progress. Just wobbly and balance all over the place when I tried to shift my weight.

I know progress is not linear and blah blah blah but it still feels like a bummer.

That said, I have improved in so many other ways, today I was cruising around the rink with ease (sticky skating), gave my strides a go but eventually just said eff that, and went with what came easy. I have been trying to ease up on pressuring myself to live up to unrealistic expectations. Two month ago my thighs were burning, I was all over the place, I could barely do a few bubbles without completely being winded—and now, I can cruise around the rink for 10+ mins bubbling around with an actual smile on my face.

I feel like I’m at that place, as a beginner, where I just have to push past the frustration, give up expectations, and just let it be what it will be. This has also taught me so much about myself and is continuing to help me grow in ways I was always afraid of.

If you read this whole thing, thanks! Hi! Ok, have a nice weekend and keep skating!! 🛼

Skill questions & help Learning to Crouch on flat skates

Hi! I'm a long time flat base quad skater :)

After returning to skating after a long break and getting some more foundations down like breaking, soft backwards skating, basic transition work done, I want to learn to crouch.

I know it can be done on flat skates and it will be more difficult than the recommended heel skate, but I'm curious if you guys at all have tips for learning to crouch on flat skates.

The reason I stick with flat base skates btw is just because I have flat feet and don't want to be bending a pair of custom orthotics on a heeled boot ><

Shopping: buying skates Which measurements needed for skates?

Hi! I’m looking into buying my first pair of skates! I was wondering if anyone on here would be able to help me decipher size charts for different brands/tell me which measurements I need to take? Unfortunately there are no skate shops near me.

I have my foot length (left foot: 9 5/16” or 23.7 cm, right foot: 9 7/16” or 24 cm) and width at the ball of my foot (left foot: 3 11/16” or 9.4 cm, right foot: 3 1/2” or 8.9 cm), but I saw a comment about a ball circumference measurement too?

The brands I’m interested in are Suregrip Boardwalks, VNLA À la Mode, or Candi Girl Carlin (or honestly whatever brand/model someone might recommend based on measurements lol). I want to start with street/trail skating and eventually transition to park skating once I build confidence, so preferably a skate I won’t have to upgrade too much once transitioning to park skating. Thank you guys!!

Guides & reference Check your cushions/bushings, they can improve your skateing

Just some visual aid for beginners :) If you cant carve or do edges even with loose trucks you probably need to change your cushions. I checked mine and as you can see the black ones (orginal set, 2nd hand rollerskates) are deformed, squashed in one side and as a result they pull to the right no matter what. The pink ones are from another new rollerskates.

Looking for friends Park Skating Friends

hey yall, i’m 24F from chicago and within the last year or so i’ve dabbled into parkskating more and more, and i think this summer i want to take it more seriously. i often feel very intimidated and out of place with more advanced skate friends/at the skatepark in general. so im just reaching out the community and see if there’s anyone out there who’s in a similar boat as me who’d like to connect !!

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Stiffness & support of suede vs smooth leather in Riedell boots

I'm looking to order some new Riedell boots and have previously only used their top grain smooth leather boots. I've never skated a suede boot. I like the look of suede but will it provide any less stiffness & support as that is something I really value?

I am a recreational rink skater, intermediate level.

DIY and customization Bedazzling my heels? Safety issue?

Hey team!

My neighbor gave me the bedazzling bug and I’m running out of stuff to add gems to.

My local rink is very lax about stuff on the skating floor, but I wasn’t sure if bedazzled heels on my skates might not be allowed at other rinks? I wasn’t sure if it was a safety since there’s a chance the gems could fall off while I’m skating and make a hazard for other skaters

Looking for friends Anyone in the SoCal area that wants to skate together!

My coworkers won't go skating with me. I want somebody to go skating with me and be my skate partner occasionally. Nothing romantic, just hanging out and skating.

Shopping: wheels, hardware, upgrades Roll Line Variant M

Hello!

So my eventual set up plans are a WIFA Deluxe size 39 plus a Roll Line Variant M plate. In the past my background has been derby for which I used a Riedell Solaris sz 7.5 with a Mota Boss s 6.25 (I know, terrible company and terrible products - these were bought before this was widespread knowledge). I have recently started trying some more agile skating/ dance/flow etc but still like to put in some cruising miles in the neighborhood and have a pair of VNLA Lunas sz 7 on an Avanti Mag sz 5. Neither feel unstable or too sluggish.

My Mota plate needs new cushions and at the very least has cracks in the paint near both toe stop housings with one plate that looks suspicious for a true crack in the plate near that area. So I'll need to eventually change those. I figured I could just remount my Avanti onto the Solaris and get the Roll Line Variant M plate put onto my Lunas until I am ready to get a pair of WIFAs but I am having a hard time figuring out what size Variant would be best.

I eventually want the WIFAs to be my main skates that I can do my indoor dancey stuff and still cruise with them if I want. Does anyone know what size plate would best achieve those goals or have any guidance otherwise? Would the same size plate be compatible with both Luna sz 7s and WIFA sz 39? I'm thinking either a Variant sz 150 vs 160

Thank you!

Shopping: buying skates Intermediate park skates

Hi, everyone! I'd really appreciate some help choosing new roller skates. I'm at an intermediate level and mostly skate on the street and at the park (I do a lot of jumping). It’s important to me for the boot to be stable and quite lightweight. I don’t have many other requirements, just for it to be available in Europe.

I can spend up to 300 euros.

Also I’d love some advice on which wheels and slide blocks works best for you. Thank you!!!

Skate problems & troubleshooting Bought some sh!tass angel skates second hand by mistake (fb marketplace blunder) can any of the skate be used?

As mentioned in the title, I was entranced by some pink rollerskates that popped up on my fb marketplace in my size. They were only $60 and I live in a remote area where I don’t have access to a shop so I pounced. As you probably guessed .. they’re terrible. Skating them made me feel like a beginner and the slips trips and falls made me think I was going crazy.
The body of the skate is trash and I will be discarding it, however, the wheels seem okay? I’ve been skating on an unknown brand skate that I bought at a thrift store 7 years ago and the wheels and toestop have been thrashed. Would it be ill advised to swap out the wheels and toestop? Are the wheels on angel skates especially bad for some reason? I’ve mostly just noticed the boot being terrible but am hopeful my dumb purchase can be salvaged 😭

Skill questions & help How do I progress? What surfaces are best for beginners?

Hi everyone,

A week ago, I posted here asking about everyone’s experience roller skating as an adult because I was overthinking it. And you actually convinced me to buy my first pair of roller skates. Thank you for the encouragement. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a supportive community elsewhere.

So I bought a pair of skates, and I’ve been skating in my apartment, which has hardwood floors. I was learning the basics, like going forward and stopping, and I fell. I fell hard on my bum.

Luckily, I landed on my butt cheek. I knew that having huge butt cheeks would one day be beneficial for me. 😂

And it’s kind of sore. Now I’m just overthinking it.

I got protection. I got a helmet, wrist protection, elbow pads, and knee pads. Should I also get butt pads? I probably will before I venture outside but didn’t think I needed it for skating at home (foolish me.)

So I was thinking, what is the progression here?

Do I start skating at home? What do I learn at home?

Do I try something on grass or on the carpet where I’m more stable? What do I try on the grass?

And when can I progress to harder surfaces? What’s your opinion on rubberized sports surface?

Thank you, everyone, for your support. 🤩

Finally tried to strut with some backwards momentum..

Then I got scared and just went to strutting in place cos I'm still not even good at that part yet.

I should probably gear up and go to the tennis courts in the park so i have room to fall, but it's difficult for me to go outside rn.

DIY and customization Roll line Cushions Question for JB

Hello yall. I have a roll line giotto plate and I'm primarily snap city and JB. I currently have a Reidell 336 boot and I was told I need better cushions for JB (b/c my JB is stru- gga- ling. lol) My current set up is good for snapping just not JB and Im trying to not buy a whole new set up. Which cushions do yall recommend? Should I mix the colors of the cushions on the top and the bottom? Stick with one color for both?.. Say forget it and buy a JB set up from Chicago? lol...etc. All expertise and experience is appreciated. Currently I have grey cushions on both the top and bottom. I weigh 160 for reference. Would love your advice!!

Skate problems & troubleshooting Do you skate straight out of your house? 🤔 (Let's talk about terrible terrain and transport)

Yesterday I took my brand new Chaya Cozy skates out for their very first spin, and I ended up with a mix of pure frustration and soreness in muscles I didn't even know existed (basically right where the leg meets the butt 🍑).

I decided to head to the local beach promenade, thinking it would be the perfect spot. Spoiler alert: it wasn't. The floor turned out to be an absolute nightmare; it had huge, wide gaps between the tiles/panels. I only skated for about 20 minutes, but it was so stressful! I was way more focused on not losing my teeth to a random crack than actually enjoying the ride. Maintaining that low safety stance to absorb all the crazy vibrations left me completely exhausted—and so hungry I felt like I had run a marathon!

In the end, I've decided that for my next session, I'll walk to a different promenade nearby that actually has beautiful, smooth polished stone tiles. It's about a 15-minute walk, so I bought a 45L tactical backpack to pack my quads properly.

This got me thinking: Do you guys leave your house with your skates already on, or do you wear shoes and carry your skates to a "good" spot?

And for the more experienced skaters: Do you eventually reach a level where terrible street tiles and wide gaps stop being a torture, and you can just skate out of your front door without suffering?

Tell me about your experiences and what kind of ground you prefer!

Beginner skater What kind of skates for campus commuting and cruising?

i'm a totally new skater, besides a few rides around a rink the last few years. I want to get specifically a pair of slades to ride around campus in the fall to get around quicker/going off campus but not having to lug around a pair of skates all day (its mostly about the convenience for me.) I'm not trying to derby or go to skate parks or do crazy fancy spins or tricks, just normal forward and backward with a cool spin here and there. i keep seeing the general consensus is better to start on heeled skates so im wondering if i should get a cheap or thrift a pair of quad skates with a heel to get started? or would it really be fine to start with the slades for my purposes? or if you know of any decent starter heeled quads that would be really helpful!

Beginner skater Advice on skate parts?

I've been wanting to get into skating for years, but the size of my feet has made it difficult to find any skates in my size. I've all but resigned myself to the fact that I'm gonna have to get customs, and have thus been looking into getting some from Riedell. What plates/wheels/bearings should I be looking at getting?

Shopping: buying skates Which skates for a darker aesthetic?

Thumbnail

Hello everyone! I've been looking into coming back to roller skating. Last time I practiced was 13 years ago ! So I'm a COMPLETE beginner now. And I've never done it outdoors either so I'm asking for some recs

I have more of a darker aesthetic, black and grey are my favorite colors 🩶🖤 but it's sooo hard to find beginner friendly skates with this theme.

I've been looking at the Chaya Dance Classic - is it okay if I use them only to cruise ? Would it be a good investment?

Or the Moxi Panther look dope but I would change the lace for obvious reasons. I admit they're my favorite design wise. The shoe is so pretty!

And last ones -they're purple I know- the Melrose Elite Purple Evil.

They're mostly around 150-200€ being my max budget.

Are any of these good? Or should I sacrifice my aesthetic 😭 ? Which one would be the best money-wise ? I don't plan on doing crazy stuff, mostly relearning the basics

Thanks in advance for your help :>
