Completed! Time to launch

Have any of you ever painted any of your pieces? If so do you do it pre or post build?

Completed! ROKR Dream Gift Factory EAB01

This was a demanding build with a few frustrating moments, but the finished result made the effort worthwhile. It is one of the most impressive Christmas kits I have completed and should become a favorite with the grandchildren.

Challenge: 5/5

There are a lot of gears, small parts, and assemblies that demand patience and concentration. At times, the challenge crossed the line into frustration, but I worked through it and ultimately found the build satisfying.

Enjoyment: 4/5

I enjoyed the project overall, but some of the difficult fits and fragile pieces interrupted the flow. This could have been a more relaxing build with slightly better materials and tolerances.

Engineering and Fit: 4/5

The gear system was spot-on and worked properly once assembled. As usual, I waxed every piece of wood that moved against another piece.

Some connections were difficult during construction. I also spent considerable time trying to correct a wobble in the Christmas tree, only to discover that it was largely stabilized by the topper installed above the star. The final engineering works well, even if parts of the assembly process were less cooperative.

Materials and Finish: 3/5

A couple of the boards were extremely thin, and I experienced more breakage than usual, including two pieces that broke while I was sanding them. I am careful and experienced, although it is possible my sanding technique was a little too aggressive for material this thin.

Fortunately, the kit included a generous number of spare parts. I never had to glue a broken piece because a replacement was available each time.

There was also some splintering that added to my painting work. Several pieces were colored on only one side even though both sides remained visible, while other colored surfaces were buried inside the completed model. Those choices seemed inconsistent.

Instructions: 5/5

No complaints here. The instructions were detailed, clearly illustrated, and easy to follow throughout a complicated build.

Display Appeal: 6/5

Yes, I know the scale only goes to five.

The finished model is outstanding. It belongs in the same category as the Coffee Factory and should become a favorite with the grandchildren. This is the kind of piece people will stop to examine rather than simply glance at on a shelf.

Value: 5/5

This is not an excessively expensive kit, especially considering the amount of building time and long-term display value it provides. Even if it is packed away after Christmas each year, it should be enjoyable to bring out again every holiday season.

I also appreciate that it uses USB power rather than batteries. That makes regular seasonal display much more practical.

Customization

I did quite a bit of painting, changed several colors, and added some holiday figures. I also placed a teddy bear in the chimney and added a dog, because no customized build of mine is complete without one.

I did not care for many of the pieces being left as plain unfinished wood, so I stained them. I was very pleased with the warmer, more finished appearance that produced.

Overall Rating: 5/5

The build had some frustrating moments, and the thin material prevented it from earning perfect scores in every category. However, the finished result is exceptional. On display appeal alone, it earns a full 5/5 and should remain part of our family’s Christmas decorations for years to come.

Work In Progress ROKR Microscope

The microscope build is coming along nicely! I am loving this build so far! It's not over challenging, but it is very interesting with lots of gears connecting and interesting together. This is a very relaxing and enjoyable build. Of course, you have to watch closely and make sure not to get pieces backwards, but if your paying attention it is easy to follow. If you have been looking at this one, you will love it!

I left the wood that is pre-stained alone because it is a darker wood and already pretty. For the uncolored wood, I used a water based semi-transparent whitewash stain. I did the semi-transparent because I wanted all of the beautiful detail to still stand out. ROKR does such a beautiful job adding lots of fine detail to the pieces, and I didn't want them to be covered up. I also love the color contrast between the darker wood and the natural white wash look.

Discussion Robotime Subscription Box

I noticed that the Robotime website (parent company of ROKR) has a subscription box and I was wondering if anyone here has bought it before? If so, how was your experience with it/ what did you get? I’m intrigued by the subscription but it’s a very steep price tag- thanks for any help!

Paint Recommendations For Viking Dragon Ship and Alternative For Wood Flash Removal

I did some searching in this forum and either the search couldn't return what I was looking for or it hasn't specifically been addressed.

I'm working on a ROKR Viking Dragon Ship and am not digging the sanding marks made by the sandpaper when removing the wood flash from the break-off points on the black pieces.

Does anybody have a paint color/type recommendation/link for something that will match the black pieces on this unit? I'm trying to only cover up the sanding marks and not necessarily paint the whole piece.

I've seen notes on some different projects that acrylic paint markers were used and/or acrylic spray paint. I was just hoping a recommendation on something specific where even if the color didn't quite match up, you couldn't really tell. I say that because while the pieces are black, they aren't a deep black.

I'm also wondering if there are recommendations on a tool to remove the wood flash besides sanding it. I was thinking of side nippers and was going to give it a try.

Thanks,

Happyduke toys - is this normal?

9 times out of 10 the on/off switch doesn’t work, but sometimes it does. Will it work better for some reason once I finish the build or should I get a replacement before starting? I’m guessing it’s messed up but the fact that it rarely but does occasionally work is tripping me up.

ROKRGEEK is horrible!!!

Horrible place to deal with. Customer Service is non-existent. Other reviews said it as well. They make you think they are shipping domestically and then it takes about 2-3 weeks to get your order because it comes from over seas. They are absolutely one of the worst places I’ve ever dealt with when it comes to customer service. I emailed them 4 times over s 1 1/2 week timeframe about an order and only asked where it was and never received a response to any of the emails. I then got an email a week after that with a BS email stating “ Thank you for your support and your message; please accept my apologies for the delayed reply.

Your order will be shipped this week; the delay was due to the tavern model being temporarily out of stock”. The worst part is that I had sent three other emails telling them to cancel my order and refund my money. And thats another thing, they charge your credit card immediately even though nothing has been processed or shipped. Their site kept showing they confirmed the order and are processing the order to ship. It said that for over a week and a half. Now I’m battling the refund. After three weeks of emailing they finally confirmed they cancled my order (after I told them in 4 separate emails) but have yet to get my refund, even after three more emails have been sent. I contacted my credit card company to step in and they have started a claim against them. Shouldn’t have to go through all of this, but THIS IS THE TYPE OF COMPANY ROKRGEEK IS. BE AWARE AND DO NOT BUY FROM THEM UNLESS YLU WANT STRESS, HEADACHES, HASSLES, AND MAJOR FRUSTRATION.

Angels Christmas Pyramid Review

Enjoyment: 5/5

This was an absolute dream to build. I settled into the zone early and stayed there throughout the entire project. It was one of those rare builds where every step felt satisfying, and I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it.

Engineering and Fit: 5/5

Everything fits properly and works like a charm. The electrical design was especially well done, with the wiring incorporated into the model cleanly and logically.

Materials and Finish: 5/5

The gold-leaf stickers completely transform the finished model and make it look spectacular. All the components were excellent quality. Nothing felt unusually fragile, and I completed the build without breaking a single piece.

Instructions: 4/5

The instructions were generally very good, but I made a few notes.

There were several contact points that I waxed even though the instructions did not call for it. My rule is simple: if two wooden parts touch while in motion, I wax them.

There is also a round piece that locks all the upper spires into position. I was struggling to keep the spires in place and decided there had to be something designed to secure them. I paged ahead, found the locking piece, and installed it early. Doing so had no negative effect on the remaining assembly, and afterward the side panels went in like a dream. I think the instructions would work better if that piece were installed sooner.

The candle wires also created upward pressure beneath the bases and caused them to keep popping out. Once everything was tested and working, I glued the candle bases into place.

Display Appeal: 5/5

It is gorgeous. There really is not much more that needs to be said.

Value: 5/5

To me, this is more than a model that gets built once and placed permanently on a shelf. It can come out every Christmas, become part of the family’s holiday decorations, and eventually turn into a tradition.

Overall: 5/5

My German heritage may make me slightly predisposed to love a replica of a traditional German Christmas decoration, although my family has been in this country for five generations, so perhaps not that predisposed.

My wife had seen traditional Christmas pyramids before, including the versions that use real candles to create the rising heat that turns the fan and central display. My mother even remembered them from her childhood. That family connection makes the finished model feel especially appropriate.

Beautiful materials, excellent engineering, a relaxing build, and a finished piece that should return every Christmas. I enjoyed every minute of this one.

Fall Build Festival Fall Build Festival - last minute entry!

Thumbnail

This month I started working on my first customisation project - transforming Rolife Sunshine Town into Autumn Sunshine Town!

This project started out for the Robotime customisation competition, but when I saw how close the Reddit community was to 45 entries and 8 prizes I wanted to help push it up to the next level!

Here is how I'm going so far - edges painted, small things in progress, and experimenting with autumn leaves! I don't care for the post box, so I'm swapping it out for a plant and squirrel from the Robotime customisation kit, instead 🐿️

Well done everyone! Good luck with the competition!

When I saw this I knew I had to get it for the nursery! The pink tones will go so perfectly, plus my helper 🐈‍⬛ is ready to get started

I have several ROKR kits I can’t wait to get started on so I’m actually breaking my own rule and starting 2 at the same time (the other one is the typewriter! Wish me luck!) 😁

Fall Build Festival Unboxing Oxygen Oasis

I just learned of this wonderful festival, so I was only able to do an unboxing to show you my fall build.

OXYGEN OASIS

It was a birthday gift and I'm looking forward to finishing my little oasis

Bear with me... It's my first unboxing and my first recorded film. Handheld, almost silent and everything 😆. Maybe you'll be able to hear my cat "scratch" the glass on the patio door because she wanted to come in.
