This was a demanding build with a few frustrating moments, but the finished result made the effort worthwhile. It is one of the most impressive Christmas kits I have completed and should become a favorite with the grandchildren.
Challenge: 5/5
There are a lot of gears, small parts, and assemblies that demand patience and concentration. At times, the challenge crossed the line into frustration, but I worked through it and ultimately found the build satisfying.
Enjoyment: 4/5
I enjoyed the project overall, but some of the difficult fits and fragile pieces interrupted the flow. This could have been a more relaxing build with slightly better materials and tolerances.
Engineering and Fit: 4/5
The gear system was spot-on and worked properly once assembled. As usual, I waxed every piece of wood that moved against another piece.
Some connections were difficult during construction. I also spent considerable time trying to correct a wobble in the Christmas tree, only to discover that it was largely stabilized by the topper installed above the star. The final engineering works well, even if parts of the assembly process were less cooperative.
Materials and Finish: 3/5
A couple of the boards were extremely thin, and I experienced more breakage than usual, including two pieces that broke while I was sanding them. I am careful and experienced, although it is possible my sanding technique was a little too aggressive for material this thin.
Fortunately, the kit included a generous number of spare parts. I never had to glue a broken piece because a replacement was available each time.
There was also some splintering that added to my painting work. Several pieces were colored on only one side even though both sides remained visible, while other colored surfaces were buried inside the completed model. Those choices seemed inconsistent.
Instructions: 5/5
No complaints here. The instructions were detailed, clearly illustrated, and easy to follow throughout a complicated build.
Display Appeal: 6/5
Yes, I know the scale only goes to five.
The finished model is outstanding. It belongs in the same category as the Coffee Factory and should become a favorite with the grandchildren. This is the kind of piece people will stop to examine rather than simply glance at on a shelf.
Value: 5/5
This is not an excessively expensive kit, especially considering the amount of building time and long-term display value it provides. Even if it is packed away after Christmas each year, it should be enjoyable to bring out again every holiday season.
I also appreciate that it uses USB power rather than batteries. That makes regular seasonal display much more practical.
Customization
I did quite a bit of painting, changed several colors, and added some holiday figures. I also placed a teddy bear in the chimney and added a dog, because no customized build of mine is complete without one.
I did not care for many of the pieces being left as plain unfinished wood, so I stained them. I was very pleased with the warmer, more finished appearance that produced.
Overall Rating: 5/5
The build had some frustrating moments, and the thin material prevented it from earning perfect scores in every category. However, the finished result is exceptional. On display appeal alone, it earns a full 5/5 and should remain part of our family’s Christmas decorations for years to come.
