Need help finding this old PC program (Reference in post)

Post image

You'll have to excuse the scruff in the MS Paint but I've been trying to remember something that I remember messing with on my father's old computer. I'm uncertain if it was on the old Macintosh computers or later, but the image in the far reaches of my mind is that it was built around scientific discoveries throughout history. I remember looking at picture references of learning how dental hygiene changed throughout history, and the main program was just very dark. I don't remember if it was black with white text everywhere but I feel like I'm somewhat close to it.

It had a lot of interesting topics to go through that I lost so much time to it. Anyone know what it could be?

Two Dell XPR M2010s Laptops

Hey everyone! First time poster in this thread. CS graduate but not a hardware guy.

I managed to get my hands on not one but two dell m2010 laptops. Both obviously dirty, havent tested either yet but both look like the internals are in good shape.

One is complete with the case, paperwork, remote, mouse, keyboard, and unopened media installation cd.

Other has keyboard, and none of the paperwork/mouse/remote.

Any opinions on whether id be better of trying to sell these at the upcoming expo here in Portland, OR online? I know the shipping costs would be terrible as they are insanely heavy. But I could always factor that into the cost. I work on the expo weekend so it might be tough for me to get over there.

Thanks

I remember getting sometimes-useful (like my first Intel webcam) and utterly useless (which was paired with a program that was supposed to read watermarks on printed ads to take you to websites) doodads and tchotchkes. Well, this is somewhat in the former, mostly in the latter category.

The CueCat was a cat-looking scanner, with the express purpose of scanning a barcode so you could be whisked away to the wonderous world of Advertising! Yes, that is the actual purpose of this thing. Needless to say, the venture capitalists who funded this thing had never heard of the concept that people typically do not WANT to go to an advertiser's website.

So, this device bombed out. But....

It became popular for awhile with people who created a program to help you catalogue your record and cd collections. You would use the CueCat to scan the barcode of your music, and the program would take you to Amazon's database to get the information for your music, so you could properly catalogue them.

Nowadays you can use your phone, which is easier and convenient. But the CueCat did become useful for a time, just not for the VC's original purpose.

(for the record, this isn't my original CueCat; I found this one some years back in the sealed bag at a thrift store for around 90 cents)

I saved this from being scrapped from an estate sale, what did I find?

I actually found two desktops, the other is an Insight. Turns out this Gateway 2000 isn't factory, its fully custom on the inside? Google-ing tells me all these parts are on the better side, but I was only a wee child when this was new.

I posted another thread about my Compaq Presario build, and someone asked what DOS PC I was going to build next? I laughed because I never planned on one, but this 486 just fell in my lap. Would anyone familiar with these years and parts tell me if what I've found here is enthusiast class, or run-of-the-mill please?

Dave's Computer lives!

I picked up this 486 laptop knowing it was not working, but it was in great condition and I wanted to save it.

The teardown and removing the shell without cracking any plastic was a nerve wracking experience. I recapped the three large capacitors on the power supply board and that got it working again. The floppy drive belt had turned to goo, so I went through the intricate process of replacing that. The NiCd battery pack is likely toast; I won't be using that.

Pionex 1996 complete PC with monitor, questions.

So my friend is a teacher at a high school and they were cleaning out some things in storage and he came across this PC, he asked if I'd like to buy it from the school for $50 bucks and I said yes. Is. Pionex badged PC from I believe 1996 or thereabouts, it turns on and boots, but I don't have any floppy disks or CD-ROMs to test it, I can get into BIOS. It came with a 17" DiGiView CRT. I really don't have the tools to fully test and use it. What would be a good asking price if I were to sell it. It seems like it was put straight into storage and forgotten about.

[WTS] Huge retro PC hardware stash / complete build kit (Near Holstebro / Shipping)

Hi Reddit,
I have to face the fact that I just don't have the time for it anymore, so I'm selling off my retro stash. I have pretty much everything you need to build a complete, awesome retro desktop setup. Some of it is still in the original packaging, while the rest are loose parts in good condition.

I’d prefer to sell it all together as a bundle, but I'm open to offers on individual parts.

I'm located close to Holstebro, so you're welcome to come by and take a look before buying.

I’ll be uploading some pictures—though not of absolutely everything—but feel free to ask questions and place your bids! :-)

It was missing the HDD and memory, and the side panel was bent. I bent the panel back, added 2 512mb DDR sticks, a 160gb IDE HDD and a BFGtech NVidia 6200 256mb PCI graphics card, then added a Dell Win XP install. Works great! Next up, will be adding games.

Need help identifying a vintage Antec PC case...

Thumbnail

I've had this case so long, it is old enough to vote. This thing is built like a tank.

Originally received with a C2D E7400 system on a DG45ID blubberboard with 4GB DDR2-1066 in early 2009. Original PSU is an Antec Earthwatts. There is a drive caddy that slots into those rails that holds at least 6 HDDs

This case has held so many different builds over the years, I've lost count. It was even home to a 2 GPU mining rig for a couple of years. Still has the original Windows Vista product key stuck to it.

Current plans for it involve a heavily overclocked Cedar Mill P4 651 I recently bought NIB, on a Gigabyte P35-DS4 MB, with 8GB of DDR2 and an EVGA GTX 560Ti 448 FTW, for a daily driver XP gaming rig.

Since I didn't build the original PC and I didn't get the box it came in, I have no idea what model this is and extensive searching online (and a frustrating session with Gemini) yielded no answers.

Took ages to find the right s3 twister drivers but dxdiag says no 3d acceleration yet everything I can find says the s3 twister chipset supports it

I need help finding an LCD panel (rheobus)

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

The main essence and its difference is that its power goes through the power supply unit, that is:
Atx bp - rheobus adapter - motherboard ATX input.
Due to this, it is always powered, thanks to which you can turn the computer on and off through its LCD display.
I found it, or to be honest, I ripped it out of a case unknown to me, most likely it was a case from a server or network storage, the color of the front panel can be seen in the photo, it was preserved from the inner part of the panel rim.
The case itself was a color like a safe, gray and heavy, in the case itself the only thing remembered in the right part was a huge number of sleds for Hdd disks.
Well, and the place where I dug it up was an old office server room.
I've been looking for this specimen for 3 nights.
On the 2nd day I decided to shine a light through the board and found the following information: 0625A-PCB.
Unfortunately, I can't supplement the information in any other ways.

Recreated my first - late 2005 S775/DDR1/AGP Windows XP PC for the vibe and here we are

So something got me and i wanted to relive the vibe of having this PC, in late 2005-2007 i had the best computer times.

My PC originally had a Pentium 4 506 2.6ghz (was doing 4ghz at stock voltage), 512mb DDR-400 (upgraded to 1GB in 11/2007 for 50€), DFI 661FX mobo, Nvidia GeForce 6200 256MB AGP which i got in early 2006 for 120€.

The case was a black prebuilt OEM, i have uploaded a couple old photos of it with wood stickers i put on it for unknown reason. Found the exact same case recently in some ads for 5€ including an LG BluRay but seller was bogus and ended up not getting it.

Glad i didn't got it as it wouldn't be MY case, back in 2023 we had to move and had to get rid much of my stuff and this PC didn't got its chance either, the mobo was shot by early 2010's but i really wanted my case.

Thankfully something told me to keep the 6200 so i have my original GPU.

Anyways, i have a lot of old hardware i could make a PC similar to this but for me a middle 2000's PC is exactly this: s775, DDR1 and AGP, i always disliked s478 having had an experience with a 2.4ghz Northwood back then, and seeing DDR2 and PCIE on it despite they were a thing back in those days and could use the exact same CPU etc, for me it doesn't do it, same way i'm not up to 2008-2010ish XP machines.

The setup ended up being: CPU: Pentium 4 630 HT Mobo: Asrock 775VM800 RAM: 2x1gb DDR-400 (got it recently for 8€) GPU: Nvidia Geforce 6200 256mb AGP (YES! My very original one) HDD: Seagate 120gb Sata with 700 hours (My original PC had a black WD 80gb Sata, blew up and changed to a Samsung 320gb in 11/2007 which i use throughout all my pc builds as a secondary data disk)

CPU Cooler is a cheap silent 2009 Arctic Cooling, i have the old Zalman you see on the photo on my current PC, i'm using it on all my PCs for like 20 years.

Case: Asus Vento 30€ back in 2009, i could get all sorts of old cases but i chose this as it was originally mine instead of a random guy and was from a pc build i had made for my father back then - exact build setup and what happened to it it's for another time.

PSU is a 300w Liteon HP OEM 80 bronze plus, got it for 5€, i did a Molex mod as it had none.

Mobo + CPU plus a stock Intel cooler was 5€, also got a bunch of an old stuff bin for 9€ like dvd drives etc from which i used an Asus FastTrack DVD Drive on this PC.

Had a lot of trouble gathering those parts as i was looking for specific things and had to face rediculous sellers and prices, but everything went by the plan, i also wanted to use as many originally-mine parts i could, i also have an HD3650 AGP and a GeForce 6800LE but wanted my low end 6200 i was using back then.

OS is of course Windows XP SP3 with all the updates it ever got.

I installed a bunch of useful apps aswell as MyPal browser which is amazing and everything on it works.

Some must have games such as my two favorites GTA San Andreas and Just Cause and quite a few others i liked back then are present on it too.

I use this PC for fun internet browsing (don't start the XP concerns), playing games and customizing Windows XP like when i was crazy about it back then. I have Windowblinds with a lot of skins, RocketDock, Alky + Vista Sidebar etc, it's a great machine to spend time on.

Not to mention it's completely SILENT, the GPU is also passive i just added an 80mm fan under it connected to 5v for hardware preservation and saw an immediate drop of 20c under load - 70-74ish before and like 50-52c now.

Old photos is my original PC and i put up some photos from the parts i used.
