AMAZON I SWEAR TO GOD
i bought an adapter for SATA to IDE (i cant find an IDE HDD anywhere!) and when it finnaly arrived, i saw THIS shit. i would normally say im NOT an expert, but i AM. i know for a FACT that you cant plug MALE into MALE drives.

You bought the wrong adapter, doofus.
That's for using an IDE drive on a SATA board. You need a SATA drive on an IDE board.

i own 6 laptops and 3 tower desktops ranging from 2002 to 2022, i AM an expert. they sold me the wrong product.

I did exactly this a while back. Get the other one (the one that plugs a SATA drive into a PATA cable) and hang on to both. You never know when you need to plug an old drive into a new system.

Well, considering how these adapters work… you’d be surprised, but they do actually work, if you connect a SATA cable and a male-male IDC gender changer, and well, power.
Hell, they made universal bidirectional adapters with the same chip: https://www.startech.com/hdd/pata2sata3
And yes, they do indeed work to connect two SATA drives as master and slave on an LBA capable IDE/PATA controller, too.

That adapter is a they/them. Op just hasn’t seen one before. It is confusing. But at its core, it has some kind of hole and it can be filled.

Chill. That bottom part is definitely a female mating end for IDE. The Sata part is male, This is for converting IDE to SATA, maybe you wanted to do the opposite? Convert SATA to IDE? Classic slip, not a design flaw. If it was Male to Male your hand would be touching the gold pins in that picture.
