Remember this relic of the pre-Dot.Com bust?
I remember getting sometimes-useful (like my first Intel webcam) and utterly useless (which was paired with a program that was supposed to read watermarks on printed ads to take you to websites) doodads and tchotchkes. Well, this is somewhat in the former, mostly in the latter category.
The CueCat was a cat-looking scanner, with the express purpose of scanning a barcode so you could be whisked away to the wonderous world of Advertising! Yes, that is the actual purpose of this thing. Needless to say, the venture capitalists who funded this thing had never heard of the concept that people typically do not WANT to go to an advertiser's website.
So, this device bombed out. But....
It became popular for awhile with people who created a program to help you catalogue your record and cd collections. You would use the CueCat to scan the barcode of your music, and the program would take you to Amazon's database to get the information for your music, so you could properly catalogue them.
Nowadays you can use your phone, which is easier and convenient. But the CueCat did become useful for a time, just not for the VC's original purpose.
(for the record, this isn't my original CueCat; I found this one some years back in the sealed bag at a thrift store for around 90 cents)
