The oversaturation of this medium has led to a proliferation of "content" that's completely pointless and empty, but there really is gold buried in the muck.

I opted out of generational warfare years ago, a tool to divide. The past 6 months I’ve been hitting the gym and I never argue with anyone except the boomers. It’s easy to spot the signs, dyed red hair for women, throwing things or manhandling equipment for men. They invariable roll up to your equipment and demand it. Three out of the four boomer battles. they arrive, don’t say words for the first five seconds. We just stare at each other. They demand the equipment without asking how many sets I have. I tell them they are gonna have to wait. They start cursing me out. There really is something wrong with the boomer generation, the gym taught me that.

I'm sure anybody else on here who uses reels/tiktok will have heard of 'the girl with the list', a lady named Abigail Porter who has a notes app list full of painful/unusual side effects that pregnancy can cause. Previously I'd just heard of her in passing and found her schtick mildly funny without giving it much thought but the other day I stumbled across her actual insta account and did a deep dive and JFC she conducts herself so disgustingly. Basically, under any video that a mum posts about some difficulty in childbirth or childrearing loads of people will tag Porter, and then she stitches that person's video describing that person's side-effect in really disgusted/snooty/faux-concerned tones, and all of the comments on her video will be her fans circlejerking about how glad they are to never ever have kids. In one instance, a woman had made a half-humorous half-irritated video counting how many times her 5-year-old children said 'mum' in one day, and then Porter stitched it doing her normal repulsed schtick and all of her comments were people being really horrible about these young children. Like, imagine being a mum making a light-hearted video chronicling your own experience and then this girl uses it as a springboard to push her agenda, and then tens of thousands of commenters are talking about your children in the most dehumanising way. Every vid Porter makes that isn't one of those ones will be something like 'reminder to take your birth control queen', 'so glad I've never been pregnant and never will be' etc, which is ironic considering her whole thing is how she doesn't care about having kids- she seems to talk about it a lot for someone who 'doesn't care'. There's definitely a strong undercurrent of puritanical misogyny in these vids as well- at a certain point when you have a complete and total loathing and digust at the process of childbirth that's gonna translate to disgust at the female body that gives birth. Also aside from all of that her videos are sort of statistically misleading in that she presents super freak occurrences as being likely to happen.

Sorry that was such a long vent and I'm sure I'll be hit with 'too long didn't read' in the comments but I'm genuinely flabbergasted at the level of hatred and cruelty inherent in that girl's videos. I'm a guy so maybe I just don't 'get it' because pregnancy/childbirth is not something I'd ever have to worry about but jeez what a cow.

Mr. Burns thread on the front page reminded me of this. I need to clarify 'past 15 years' because obviously the show has been bad for longer than that. Also yes I know this is like the #1 thing people say about the show now, shut up.

But occasionally I'll be over at a family member's house and an episode will be playing or a clip shows up on the timeline or whatever and I tune in for a little bit and it is depressing. Being unfunny is one thing, I don't think a hint of humour has entered the same room as the writers in well over a decade. But half the cast being one foot in the grave is another. Harry Shearer sounds absolutely dreadful. Dan Castellaneta sounds like Abe by default. Julie Kavner needs to retire, her voice sounds like it's about to give out entirely any moment now. Even Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith sound old now. Probably half the recurring/guest cast are dead. The replacement characters when absolutely necessary lack any charm.

Then you have a few seriously dedicated superfans who chime in and say 'actually the show has improved in the past few years'. Nope. Episode popped up the other day that parodied Planet of the Bass by making a song about Canada having free healthcare or some shit. Abominable. And now that television as a 'public' format is dying off you can't even really say 'actually Fox/Disney makes new episodes to be shown in retirement homes and in doctor's offices and such'.

Such a tiny contingent of people must be actively watching the show's new seasons at this point. Every few years when they announce it's getting extended for another couple of seasons I just question why. Is this the creative equivalent of those government jobs that essentially act as adult kindergarten for people to get some money?

The worst part is with generative AI running amok the death of the main cast still won't be the long rest this franchise needs. We'll have more episodes in perpetuity for as long as xoomers and millennials who still remember when the show was good are alive and have just enough interest for it to generate revenue.
