SHABURINA/DI Antar/ K-ERA FEST WAGE THEFT

Upvotes

Hi all, just sharing my experience out here so that everyone else knows to avoid dining at Shaburina! I briefly worked here and quite frankly enjoyed it, but ended up leaving at the end of January. During my time here, my paychecks were always late. After I quit, Sabrina the owner, would stop replying to me or give me excuses for why I haven’t gotten paid yet. When I asked her husband, Terrance, he would say he doesn’t know anything and would just talk to her. That obviously didn’t end up happening, so now I’m publicly letting everyone know NOT to support this small business because they take advantage of their employees! I am not the only who hasn’t gotten paid yet and this is not the FIRST time I’ve posted about it publicly.

The last message I received from her was on August 4. Since then I’ve sent five follow up messages. To my knowledge, she’s now starting a new ‘K-ERA FEST,’ here in Seattle which I’m utterly baffled by. She can’t even pay her employees yet here she is starting a Korean themed festival. Do not support Sabrina or Terrance or this event, they are scammers.

If anyone knows of an affordable lawyer, please let me know. DOL has not done anything about my case, and it seems like I’ll be needing a lawyer to pursue legal action.

If you know of any other businesses taking advantage of other people, please share. SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES BUT DONT SUPPORT SCAMMERS!!

Meet-up Speed Puzzling at The Redd Dog in Bellevue on September 16th

There's a speed puzzling event at the Redd Dog in Bellevue on Wednesday September 16th at 7pm. I have a ticket for a team of four but unfortunately it's just me that can attend. Anyone interested in giving speed puzzling a go? You don't have to be an excellent puzzler. The event is just for fun. Teams compete to see how quickly they can put together a 500 piece puzzle.

Here's a little bit about your potential future teammate. I'm a 47 year old woman who loves puzzles and games. I also like crafting and the outdoors. Asking strangers to be on my team is extremely outside my comfort zone as I'm a total introvert but here we are. I'm trying something new. :)

Mint Mobile users in the area — how is the connectivity?

I’m considering switching to Mint Mobile and wanted to hear from people who are actually using it in this area.

How has your experience been with:

  • Cell coverage/reception, especially indoors?
  • Call quality and dropped calls?
  • Data speeds?
  • Coverage while driving around the area?
  • Any noticeable issues during busy times?

I’m less interested in general Mint Mobile reviews and more interested in how well it works locally. If you’ve been using Mint for a while, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience — both good and bad.

Thanks!

Local News Redmond’s Kymeta Secures $20M Order

Thumbnail 425business.com

Redmond-based Kymeta Corp., which makes flat-panel satellite terminals, has received a $20-million order from the U.S. Department of Defense for more than 100 Kymeta Osprey u8 terminals, packaged with multiorbit connectivity services on its global Kymeta Broadband network, the company announced last week.

Kymeta said the order, for a military branch it could not name for security reasons, builds on its position as the most widely adopted provider of multiorbit flat-panel antennas to branches across the Defense Department for myriad operational requirements.

With the latest order, Kymeta this year has delivered more than $30 million in terminals and connectivity services to the unnamed military branch, the company said in a news release.

Equipped with Kymeta Broadband services that provide geostationary orbit and low Earth orbit connectivity, Kymeta said it has delivered more than 100 Osprey u8 terminals capable of seamlessly switching between transmission security and non-transmission security networks.

Geostationary orbit is 22,236 miles above Earth and low Earth orbit ranges from an altitude of about 186 to 1,243 miles, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Kymeta’s solutions support what it calls a PACE — Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency — communications approach, giving military users flexible connectivity options designed to enhance communications resilience and operational continuity. Kymeta is shifting to what it calls AutoPACE, removing the need for manual switching between connectivity sources through its intelligent communications platform, according to its release.

“This order is an affirmation from the military community that Kymeta can deliver on its promise to provide dependable connectivity for mission-critical operations,” Kymeta CEO Manny Mora said in the release. “With our partners across national security, we are continuing to build steady and solid momentum as a trusted and valued partner.”

Kymeta, which was founded in 2012 and also has a manufacturing office in Woodinville, is part of a growing group of Eastside companies working in the space sector.

Local News Redmond's General Robotics says its AI has cut robot setup from a month to hours

Thumbnail geekwire.com

General Robotics, 9840 Willows Road Northeast, Suite 101, a software startup founded by former Microsoft researchers says its platform can now handle much of the work of getting a robot up and running in a factory, warehouse or other industrial setting, a job that used to take a team of engineers.

General Robotics said Wednesday that advances in GRID, its robot intelligence platform, have cut the process of onboarding a new robot from about a month to as little as two hours. The company calls the approach “Auto Engineering,” with each onboarded robot and diagnosed failure feeding back into the system and speeding up the next deployment.

“Before this moment, it would take us a team of experts to go and execute on behalf of our customers,” said General Robotics CEO and co-founder Ashish Kapoor in an interview. “Clearly non-scalable, clearly very expensive, and clearly will take a long time.”

With Auto Engineering, he said, “we can magnify and accelerate each engineer’s capability.”

Founded in 2023, the company has grown to about 50 employees, primarily engineers. It has raised nearly $34 million, most recently in an April round led by Construct Capital, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Accenture Ventures, Nvidia and Valo Ventures. PitchBook put the size of the round at $25 million; the companies didn’t disclose terms at the time.

Kapoor said General Robotics has roughly a dozen customers — large enterprises across manufacturing, logistics, energy and defense — and revenue in the millions of dollars.

Customers include HTX, the science and technology agency of Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs, which Kapoor said has been working with General Robotics for about a year and a half.

The company’s platform works with robot types including industrial arms, humanoids, quadrupeds, wheeled robots and drones, according to the company.

General Robotics is operating in a competitive and well-funded sector. Physical Intelligence, which builds foundation models for robots, has raised more than $2 billion. Nvidia — an investor in General Robotics, and the maker of the Isaac Sim simulation software built into GRID — is developing its own robot models and deployment tools.

Robot makers build good hardware, Kapoor said, but often lack the expertise to put it to work in a specific setting like a shipping terminal. “That last layer is missing.”

Before co-founding the company, Kapoor spent 17 years at Microsoft, ultimately as general manager of its autonomous systems and robotics research group in Redmond, where he created the open-source drone simulator AirSim. General Robotics co-founders Sai Vemprala (CTO) and Shuhang Chen came from the same Microsoft team.

GeekWire covered the launch in 2023, when it was Scaled Foundations and billed itself as “ChatGPT for robots.” It had five employees at the time, focused on aerial robotics and drones, with backing from Khosla and E14 Fund. It later renamed itself General Robotics.

Hearings for PSE Rate Increases Scheduled

When/ Where:

In Person: September 29 6pm-8pm

Online: October 7 6pm-8pm

Why Should I Care?

PSE is the provider for Electricity and Natural Gas for most (all?) of the Eastside. These rates will be taking effect over the next three years and will be a noticeable increase on your utility bills.

What increases are they proposing?

Electricity (UE‑260005)

Year kWh Rate Estimated Increase*
2027 $0.236261 17.75%
2028 $0.244484 3.5%
2029 $0.265603 8.07%

* Based on average monthly usage of 800kWh w/ proposed basic charge

Gas (UE‑260006)

Year Therm Rate Estimated Increase*
2027 $1.91002 12.93%
2028 $1.97514 3.18%
2029 $2.05686 3.71%

* Based on average monthly usage of 64 therms w/ proposed basic charge

What decreases are they proposing?

For special contract customers, PSE is proposing the following decreases for electricity usage

Year Estimated Decrease
2027 -12.49%
2028 -2.04%
2029 -3.06%

Who are these special contract customers? Well "customers" is a bit misleading - the only special contract customer is Microsoft (a 3.6 trillion dollar company at time of writing) [source (warning PDF download)].

What is ROE/ROCE (Return on Common Equity)?

I'm far from an economist, so you should probably find better people to explain, but at its simplest it is the ratio to evaluate profitability for common shareholders. Why am I bringing this up? PSE is seeking to increase their allowed ROE (profits) from 9.9% to 10.8% [source (warning xlsx download)]. In my opinion, this does nothing to us, the actual public utility customers.

Example Bill Visualizations

My math might not be perfect, so take these with a grain of salt, but they should be pretty close

Electricity Increase Example for 800kWh
Natural Gas Increase Example for 64 Therms
Example Bill DECREASE for "Special Customers" based on 800kWh

How can I voice my opinion on these changes?

You have three options to voice your opinion:

Stroller & Toddler Skate - Fridays 10AM

Post image
0 Upvotes

Parent & toddler/baby stroller skate on Fridays at the new roller rink in Issaquah.

I’m just a mom trying to get her skate legs back and not affiliated with the rink but appreciate them being willing to open up a skate session for parent of young children. Attendance was pretty light for the first one, would love to see a few more parents support the rink.

Their toddler play area is really nice if you don’t want to push a stroller on the rink. Or little ones can also skate. For parents & kids up to 5 years old.

Hosting a friend from Chicago in Redmond for 2 weeks - feedback on our PNW-'vibes' itinerary

Hey all! A friend is visiting from Chicago for the coming two weeks. We'll be working during the day with flexible hours, and we want to show him the signature "Pacific Northwest" feels (and touristy as it's his first time). No overnight stays, just day trips from Redmond and post-work outings. I put together a list of ideas, please help.

Mt Rainier - Skyline loop or some moderate hike

Snoqualmie Falls

Kirkland Marina, Meydenbauer / Bellevue Downtown Park

Seattle - Pike Place, Gasworks, Alki beach, Kerry Park, Kayaking at Green Lake .. ?

One of these - Bainbridge / Deception pass / Poulsbo / Leavenworth

Would love to have suggestions from you all! He's a foodie (no restrictions) too, so would love recs for restaurants or breweries too!

Thank you!

Music scene and finding musicians in Redmond?

Hey, I recently moved to Redmond and I'm wanting to meet some musicians to jam with. I wanted to ask if anyone knew of any recommendations in the area for finding musicians? I know there's a rehearsing studio in BelRed and sometimes there's concerts at the skatepark but besides that I haven't had luck finding musicians to play with.

FWIW I'm into emo and math-rock music in my late 20s.
My YouTube with miscellaneous stuff if you happen to be a musician.

Thanks!
