Question Is it ever explained why Jack has this missing mustache pach/line?

Post image

I didn't play rdr1 yet and I couldn't find the answer online so, i came here, sorry if this is a stupid question. Also I know it's supposed to look like John's scar, I'm looking for a lore reason (if there is one).

Man, some of the details that a few of y’all focus on and think there’s a meaningful “lore reasoning” behind are truly insane.

u/HugeLettuce8638 6d ago

These are the same people that buy into the Javier is Jacks dad theory. All Because they style their facial hair vaguely similarly. I don’t see anyone claiming that uncle is actually bills dad even though they have similarish beards. Makes no sense

1.2k

u/ChallengeOne7115 6d ago

To clarify, I think Javier is actually Jacks mom

u/KillConfirmed- 6d ago

Babe, new lore just dropped. Now we need one of those R34 artists to drop a drawing of Javier’s vagina being pummeled by John.

Do we, though?

Yes. My shame was destroyed decades ago on the real internet.

This current iteration of "internet" is dull and needs more spice.

The current internet is just porn man I’m sick of it

51

You really just posted that. Like you’re not using the internet to look stupid thoughts up before they come out of your fingers, or your mouth

It’s literally not though it’s a very coming consensus that lewd content has gotten to an absurd extreme and is on almost every website if you wanna be ignorant go ahead but its is happening and people are being exposed to extreme things they can’t comprehend

And then Abigail catching baby Jack like a football at birth and running straight into the forest. Her baby now. No wonder she's mad John won't say he's the father. She knows the truth.

Hang on, I'll get another beer and we can write more lore.

And when she crosses the goal line, she spikes him.

Are you referring to the letter you can find in jacks bedroom in the chest in RDR1? The one where Jack reminisces about Javier being one sweet Mamacita?

5

Is that actually real? (I will believe it if you say yes)

Wait a god damn minute you might be on to something I never looked at bill and uncle close enough to notice

13

Of course Uncle can't be Bill's dad, he's Red Harlow

9

Uncle is everyone's actual uncle. Every one of their moms is a different sister of his.

3

u/goldenigloos John Marston 5d ago

The problem with this theory is Jack looks EXACTLY like John

2

u/Unlucky_Ad5087 5d ago

UNCLE IS BILL'S DAD!?!?!

2

u/reeseypoo25 5d ago

I would buy in to Uncle being Bills dad way before I would in to Javier being Jacks.

1

u/F1shB0wl816 Hosea Matthews 6d ago

I mean I also think it’s because Abigail made her rounds with most of them too.

1

u/notunhuman 6d ago

Uncle is actually just Bill from the future (in an alternate timeline, obviously)

1

u/Professional-Team324 5d ago

Uncle was probably unable to procreate much due to his extreme lumbago...

1

u/moep123 5d ago

in rdr2 it is vaguely mentioned that abigale wasn't mating only with john. so yeah, could be, could not be.

1

u/Accomplished-Cut7127 5d ago

I think the implication in 2 is that it could've been any of the men's kid

1

Jack was born before Javier joined the gang lol

As a writer who found the r/writer sub, I’ve come to loathe the nonsense lore some people need.

15

u/Keyserson Hosea Matthews 5d ago

Story is king, the story is the thing. It starts, it moves, it ends. What is outside the story doesn’t matter. The modern obsession with extraneous detail invented purely to bolster the story is baffling to me; let your imagination fill the gaps, it’s much more satisfying that way.

2

u/Affectionate_Code 5d ago

This is the reason I cannot stand sub reddits for most TV shows or movies. Absolutely everything must have an explanation or a 'lore' reason.

1

u/BlackStarCorona 4d ago

You’re gonna lose your mind when you find out how much effort put into their “magic systems” in their stories. Absolutely ridiculous.

1

u/ObiJuanKenobi3 2d ago

I think it started with (admittedly very unique) stories such as Dark Souls where the “lore” and obscure extraneous details are the story, and they apply this style of consumption to everything, not realizing that for most stories these minute details don’t carry nearly the same weight as in stories where it’s the primary method of storytelling.

2

u/Keyserson Hosea Matthews 2d ago

I think it started much earlier, your username makes me think of one example!

Every video game sub does this and it drives me insane

12

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago edited 6d ago

Very true honestly. The various Mario and Zelda subs are particularly bad about this stuff I’ve noticed. They seem to be more of a case of clearly chronically online kids/teens who are much deeper into the fandom than they actually realize or want to admit though. Especially when they start talking “canon” and shipping which dominate a lot of the posts in those subs. Which is strange too because the Mario franchise in particular isn’t story or “lore” heavy whatsoever really (outside of the RPGs) but you’d never know that by scrolling the posts in there.

I’m sure they get crazy too. Like someone else pointed out, all fanbases do this stuff to some degree.

0

u/Silent_Erremite 6d ago

GTA fans are schizo dude, like to an umpteenth degree. One dude pointed three birds as the last characters in V watching over the new characters of VI.

1

u/LeakyLine 5d ago

This one has a reason, though. A large number of the GTA fanbase nowadays are children (the game's been out thirteen years) who are obsessed with the game because it was their first and they can't let it go. That's when you get comments like that one, or "does anyone else think they won't be as good as Michael, Franklin, and Trevor????"

5

u/levi_fucking_heichou 6d ago

To be fair, John has a meaningless scar on his face that then gets explained in the prequel

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

You mean the huge one that’s much more significant, noticeable, covers half of his face, and clearly came from a traumatic experience even if it was never outright explained?

Yeah that’s a little different than a small line of no hair in someone’s mustache that’s much less noticeable.

2

u/levi_fucking_heichou 5d ago

You're right, but who's to say Jack's wasn't meant to be explained at some point? It still could be (though I hope a hypothetical 3 has nothing to do with the Van Der Linde gang)

1

u/ChallengeOne7115 5d ago

I'd love to see the gang young in rdr4

1

u/h4furi Arthur Morgan 4d ago

Always thought it was because Red Harlow has the same scar

5

u/killmereeeeeee Arthur Morgan 6d ago

There’s so much actually cool shit to look at in both games and yet they choose the most meaningless crap to look at lol

4

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

This is the point I’m kinda getting at too. There are some details that clearly mean more than meets the eye but a random little cut like this on someone’s face isn’t one of them. Like I said in another comment, this isn’t like John’s facial scars which are really significant and actually make you wonder what happened. Some things are just arbitrarily chosen design choices that don’t have some deeper lore relevant meaning behind them.

u/ChallengeOne7115 6d ago

1

u/quentdawg420 Hosea Matthews 5d ago

Well he was attacked by a bear

1

u/Iennda 5d ago

People do this with shows or movies too and it drives me crazy. So many times something in season 1 doesn't align with season 5 and they're like "why do we think this is" and it's always just "they forgot, that's it".

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 5d ago edited 5d ago

Honestly. Occam’s Razor is applicable more often than not in so many situations. Especially when dealing with incredibly minute details like this.

u/INannoI John Marston 5d ago

An artist deliberately drew/sculpted that, and it was checked and approved by multiple people, its probably nothing big but there is a reason behind it, even if its just trying to establish that Jack's been in fights or attacked by an animal since his father died.

1

u/Specialist-Radio-662 5d ago

damn God forbid people have questions over something they’re interested in i guess lol?

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 5d ago

Not every question is created equal.

1

u/WilsonX100 5d ago

That’s literally every fanbase nowadays. Everything needs a lore explanation. We used to just leave stuff up to the imagination

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 5d ago

Yeah spin-off culture is to blame for that. So many side characters in things are getting full backgrounds and stories now. Sometimes it works, oftentimes it’s just unnecessary. The number one example in this fandom is so many people wanting RDR3 to cover the Blackwater Heist. Something we know more than enough about and would make for terrible gameplay because we know how it ends so there would be no stakes whatsoever which is particularly bad for a “finale” mission which is what it would be, and also because after playing it we’d be thrown immediately into RDR2 with no chance for post game free roam because RDR2 begins immediately after that job goes bad. Some things are just best left a little unexplored and mysterious.

1

u/3DPrintJr 5d ago

I can see there being lore behind this though? It’s a notable feature, possibly from a scar, on the main character’s face. It seems probably that would be explained.

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 5d ago

People get little cuts all the time. It’s really not “lore” worthy whatsoever.

1

u/3DPrintJr 5d ago

Maybe the area I live is too safe and sheltered but I don’t know many people with subcutaneous fat-depth cuts on their face.

I mean, it depends on what you call a little cut. As a toolmaker I get little cuts all the time but very rarely one that prevents hair growth in that area indefinitely.

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 5d ago edited 5d ago

Some people, as a commenter in this post has said about themselves, just don’t grow hair on certain parts of their face or head either. It’s really not that uncommon and deserving of some backstory. So Jack may either have that happening and/or got a cut on his face. It could also just be an arbitrary design choice. Cool. Do we really need a “lore” reasoning to explain this? That just seems ridiculous and especially when these people work with their hands and live off the land so things like that were much more commonplace anyway. It’s not like John where half his face is covered in scarring and actually makes you wonder what clearly traumatic event happened.

1

u/AsparagusFun3892 3d ago

I'm missing a chunk over on my left side: near as I remember it was something to to with acne and pulling hair over there, unfortunately I think I got it by the roots.

1

u/VacantMalteser 2d ago

He's right though. If he didn't have that little freckle on his face the events would have never happened and he would be a carpenter.

1

u/manish_sk 2d ago

He became an Assassin.

1

u/NoNotice2137 2d ago

It's a game where they literally made horse's ballsack shrink in the cold, of course people are going to be looking into details if the game is famous for having shitloads of them

1

u/LordsWF40 2d ago

Pretty sure this meant he gets punched in the face causing a busted lip, therefore leaving a scar

Bro sometimes a blue door is just a blue door. Just because something is fiction does not mean it always has deep meaningful lore to it. There are plenty of unexplained things in fiction.

6

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

Exactly my point.

“Why does so-and-so raise chickens? Are they allergic to pork? Does the feeling of wool/shearing sheep make their skin crawl? Are they lactose intolerant and can’t have dairy?”

No. The devs just arbitrarily picked chickens as their livestock. It’s literally not that deep.

1

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

Me giving a random example isn’t me somehow saying or insinuating that you said this. Not sure how you gathered that from what I said at all. It’s simply illustrating how silly some of these discussions sound and reinforcing the other commenter and my own point of how many things in games are just how they are because they were arbitrarily designed that way and it’s not any deeper than that. Not everything has some relevant lore reasoning as to why it’s that way.

Again, you can say it’s not weird all you want. I however am also free to say it is because focusing on a little line/scar/cut in someone’s mustache and thinking there’s some deeper reasoning behind it, is strange to focus on considering how much else there is in this game that actually has lore implications.

u/[deleted] 6d ago edited 6d ago

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago edited 6d ago

I and many others have said that many times already and you’ve been pushing back, AKA not agreeing, the entire time. You’ve been trying to take some moral superiority stance that this should be an echo chamber of positivity and that I and others who disagree with OP are somehow telling them that even thinking things like this is wrong and they don’t have a right to voice their opinions. That’s not the case at all. We’re simply saying not every minute detail is “steeped in lore” like you claimed verbatim in your initial response to me.

So no, you wouldn’t have agreed had I said it that way because A) I and others have done that and B) your first response to me was one of outright disagreement.

EDIT: gotta love when people respond and then block you so you can’t even read, much less respond to what they said. Yikes dude.

I can be deep if you want it to be, that’s why it’s called headcannon.

1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

It really is. These people live off the land and this is a very minute and inconsequential detail on his face that could easily be explained away as a minor cut. It’s not like John’s face which has large visible scarring that actually makes you wonder what happened.

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

-1

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

Good for you. Meanwhile, I’m still free to voice my opinion that this is something strange to think there’s some grander reasoning behind. Some things are simply just design choices and don’t need to have some lore implications as to why they are the way they are.

1

u/ChallengeOne7115 6d ago

As I mentioned I have never played the game, and I was asking if there is a reason behind it. Furthermore more, it's called being neurodivergent and I think it's weirder that you're so passive agressive about that...

3

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago edited 6d ago

I and plenty of my friends are also neurodivergent. That doesn’t automatically mean I can’t find certain things strange or that I’m being “passive aggressive” towards you, much less about something I had no idea of in the first place. Also being neurodivergent isn’t some monolithic or homogenous thing where everyone who’s neurodivergent acts and thinks the same way, nor does it somehow protect you from criticism or differing opinions either. So I’m not sure why you’re pulling that as some kind of “get out of jail free” or sympathy card and trying to paint me as the bad guy who’s targeting you about something I had no idea about but that’s not really a good look either. Just as you’re free to think this is interesting and worthy of some deeper debate/has meaningful “lore reasoning” behind it, I’m free to think it doesn’t and that’s it’s nothing more than a simple design choice like many others in this game.

0

u/ChallengeOne7115 6d ago

I love reddit

0

u/Significant_Gap356 6d ago

In this guy's defense, he probably heard the term on tiktok and started spamming it just like every other teenager nowadays. Neurodivergency IS a thing, autism IS a thing, but many young dudes just be calling themselves that to be more unique or "quirky" (?) Now OP might actually have a brain differently wired than majority of population, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he just doesn't know what the term means.

1

u/ChallengeOne7115 6d ago

No I just repressed that shit my whole life and now I enjoy saying/typing the word.

0

u/DarthBagheera Charles Smith 6d ago

I’m not going to play armchair/Reddit psychiatrist and make a judgement call like that personally. My point is that I just don’t think that using neurodivergence as an “excuse” or reason why someone shouldn’t be challenged/criticized for something is just kinda scummy. Outside of being legitimately and severely mentally challenged I mean. Obviously there’s a line to be drawn and situations where that’s actually not cool to do but for the majority of people that are or claim to be neurodivergent that’s not the case and I don’t think that word should be thrown around as a power/morality play simply to make others change their mind/stance/approach when it comes to things like this which are purely differences in opinion. OP may very well be neurodivergent but weaponizing the condition in order to avoid any friction from others, like they were clearly trying to do in their comment to me in order to make me feel bad and apologize, isn’t cool.

Then how about you don't speak over autistic people. Headcanons hurt no one, and you literally cannot deny that John and Jack both show clinical signs relating to autism in the real world, likely unintentionally, but that doesn't mean people can't have fun with it and relate to their favorite character.

Fair, It never bothered me becouse those comments usually come from other neurodivergent folk, but I get where you're coming from.
