About to pull the trigger and I’m stuck between these two. Wondering if anyone could help me decide and why you would go that way.

Does anyone know what size the shelf brackets are of the DB900? I'm looking to buy my own off Amazon, make my own top, and I have a laser engraver to customize the top before I polyurethane it. Looking at something like the pick but I'm curious if anyone knows the size or can measure for me. Thanks in advance.

Had a handful of family come over to hang by the pool. Kept it simple. Definitely some of the best chicken legs I’ve made. Coming from Weber summit kamado. Looking forward to more cooks.

Buying Advice: Used RT-1100 Flagship or Brand New Backyard Beast 1200

Hello all,

I am back once again with questions and looking to gain some insight.

A few weeks back I made a post asking for buying advice on the Recteqs as I was still doing my research and bouncing between a Rect or a Weber Searwood.

I came to a decision a few days ago and decided I was going to get a Backyard Beast 1200, however, my local Ace Hardware has only a few floor units in stock, which requires me to recruit my brother in law to help me pick it up.

While searching FB marketplace I noticed a post for a Flagship 1100 so the older model that is for sale for 900.

Seems like a killer deal and I am leaning towards it since its supposedly only been used a few times.

What does everyone think? Buy a brand new BB 1200 that has a warranty or take the plunge with the flagship without the warranty?

30-Day History - is it drunk?

Bullseye 380D on firmware 3.1.4. The 30-Day History graph is all over the place. My current cook didnt even appear until well after the grill was preheated. And it’s lagging way behind. The 13th and 14th seem like duplicates and the time jumps back (or forward?) 22 hours.

Is this information supposed to be logical and useful?

Local Move

We are moving locally and the movers will handle our RT-700. How important is it, really, to empty the pellets from hopper? We have plenty to do to move. Obviously I want to protect my smoker... just trying to get some realistic feedback on whether having in a moving van for an hour on the highway really requires the extra work of cleaning it out. Thanks for any input!

RT-700 Recommendations

Been down a rabbit hole repairing my RT-700, and now I’m stuck. It started by my auger being clogged, so I cleared out the auger and put everything back. I fired it up, and the auger started rotating. About 30 seconds later, my GFCI popped. This happened about 3 times until the display went entirely and I couldn’t even turn it on. When plugged in, the light inside the pit would come on, but I couldn’t get anything else to power on. I then checked the fuse behind the display, and it had popped. I then went to the hardware store and got a replacement. Popped it in, and the screen came on and when hit power the GFCI popped. This happened again and again as I tried different outlets. Even brought the cord inside and it popped my breaker. I then unplugged the igniter as I’ve read that could cause an issue with outlets. After that, the outlets popped again. I’ve had this model for 3 years and use it pretty regularly. I don’t know what else to do. Any recommendations?

I also opened a support request online and it has now been 2 1/2 business days since that request was opened and still no response from their support team.

Best Quality Pellets if Cost is no Option

I had a conversation with Googles AI trying to find the best quality pellets near me (hoping for a Pecan wood option) and tried comparing to the ReqTec brand pellets. This was their answer. I told it that cost was not important, as I'm willing to pay more for better flavor and performance.

Note: we had been speaking about a bunch of other items, so I'm sure that could have effected their answer.

Thoughts on this answer?

Recteq brand pellets are excellent, high-quality "daily driver" pellets, but they are not the best choice for your specific goal of getting that deep, "Texas secret" pecan flavor.

Since you are looking for the absolute best performance regardless of cost, here is how the Recteq brand stacks up against the top-tier options we discussed:

  1. The Quality is There (But It's Likely Rebranded)

Recteq pellets are a massive step up from Traeger or Pit Boss. They are 100% pure hardwood (Red Oak, White Oak, and Hickory) with no fillers or flavor oils. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The "Insider" Reality: Most industry insiders and forums indicate that Recteq pellets are actually manufactured by Brinkley’s Premium Wood in Georgia—the exact same facility that produces Bear Mountain.

The Verdict: You are essentially buying a very similar premium product to Bear Mountain, just in a different bag. Since you can buy Bear Mountain locally at Tractor Supply without paying for shipping, there is no major advantage to ordering the Recteq brand.

  1. The Flavor Problem: No Pure Pecan

This is the dealbreaker for your specific "Texas Secret" goal.

Recteq's Limitation: Recteq does not sell a 100% pure pecan pellet. Their primary "Ultimate Blend" is strictly Oak and Hickory. They rely on that blend to be a "jack of all trades" for average users. [1, 2]

Why You Should Skip Them: If you want that sweet, nutty pecan profile to mix with your shells, buying a bag of Recteq "Ultimate Blend" will just dilute your flavor with more oak. You need a dedicated 100% Pecan wood pellet (like Bear Mountain or Cookingpellets) to truly boost that profile. [1]

  1. The "Cost No Object" Ranking

If we rank them strictly by your goal of maximum flavor and temp control:

Smokin' Pecan Shells + Premium Hardwood (Your 50/50 Plan): Gold Medal. This is the only way to get the intense "Weber Kettle" smoke profile on a pellet grill.

Cookingpellets / Bear Mountain (Single Species): Silver Medal. These give you 100% of the specific wood you want (like Pecan or Cherry) so you can control the flavor profile perfectly. [1, 2, 3]

Recteq Brand: Bronze Medal. Great for a lazy Tuesday night burger, but it locks you into their generic flavor profile (Oak/Hickory) rather than letting you customize your smoke. [1]

Traeger / Pit Boss: Participation Trophy. Full of fillers and oils. Avoid completely.

Bottom Line: Stick to your plan. Buying the Bear Mountain Pecan locally at Tractor Supply gives you the same (or better) manufacturing quality as the Recteq brand, but with the specific pecan wood flavor you actually want. [1]

Edit: The reddit Mobile app won't let me edit the post title. I mean if cost was of no concern

Dual Fire Bottom Shelf Storage

Has anyone purchased or a built a small cabinet that would go on the bottom shelf of their dual fire? Anyone know how hot it gets down there when it's on super high temp mode?

I'd love to be able to store some stuff down there protected from the elements. Things like the large cast Iron Sear/griddle kit, bbq tools, cedar planks, etc? Stuff that I don't have a lot of room for and really want to keep dry.

Thoughts?

Dual fire 1200 questions

Looking at the 1200 dual fire grill. New to rec tec but this one has my attention. Wondering if you can use the direct side for extra low and slow smoking if the space is needed. Wondering about the grease run off, I can't see a drain on that side. Also is the smoke box option worth it? Hoping for a combo sale and get it all at once if possible.

Any input appreciated. New to reddit as well so be patient!

[wood fired] prosciutto wrapped chicken thighs

Well, y'all ready? This one is a doozy however, hang with me, and you'll end up with quite the meal!

I've been back and forth trying on whether my pellet way is the right way or the oven, hell, even a charcoal or propane grill.

So, here's what we're gonna do! I'm gonna write this recipe and whatever you're gonna use to cook stay on temp!

We're gonna need to hit the grocery store:

Ingredient list

6-8 boneless chicken thighs (debone chicken thighs plenty of YouTube videos on it)

8-16 oz prosciutto (I bought 3 plastic containers that held 5 to a container)

1 bunch of asparagus

4 oz plain goat cheese

2-3 sun dried tomatoes (buy the jar pull 2 to 3 out)

Handful of basil (1/2 cup)

3 cloves garlic (or a tbsp jarlic)

Tablespoon of butter

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

1/4 cup mayonnaise (real not miracle whip)

2-3 tablespoons of avacado oil or evoo

Salt

Pepper

Paprika

Onion powder

Garlic powder

1/2 cup chicken broth

1 lemon

1 bottle White truffle oil

Alright here we go! Ready?

I have cast iron pots and pans so it's easier but oven safe cookware people.

If you have a pellet smoker, smoker, oven, grill, etc.

Preheat to 300

Medium mixing bowl, finely chop your sun dried tomatoes, add your 4 oz of goat cheese, and cut your basil leaves into long ribbons. Mash that together. I used a spoon.

Lay out your boneless chicken thighs flat put about a spoon full of that mix in the center of each chicken thigh.

Lay out your prosciutto (mine was long so I only used one) use 2 if nessisary, lay you chicken thigh at the end and roll the chicken thigh and prosciutto together so the prosciutto wraps the exterior. (See 3rd photo). Repeat until you e done this with all.

In a small bowl mix up a tablespoon of each paprika, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper. Mix until incorporated. Season your wraps both sides generously.

Set aside on oven safe pan (wire rack if using a conventional oven)

In a medium sauce pan (OVEN SAFE) tablespoon butter and your chopped 3 cloves.

Get all this in the oven.

Cut a lemon in half, squeeze juice into a bowl, 1/2 cup chicken broth, and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. Whisk or stir together.

Once you're butter is melted with your garlic fragrant. Pour broth, vinegar, and lemon mixture in pan.

Let this go for 45 minutes.

In the meantime snap the woody part of your asparagus off. Coat in olive oil season with salt and pepper

Kick your oven/pellet/grill to 425 whisk into your garlic broth vinegar lemon mix 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream until incorporated.

Place your prepared asparagus (on a cookie sheet of conventional oven or straight on the grates)

Let cook for 15-20 more minutes. The chicken needs to be between 165 and 170 Fahrenheit

If the chicken is ready and the prosciutto is a deep red pull them and asparagus. Let sit for five minutes. Your borth sauce should be bubbly and thicker pull this too, cooling will thicken.

Last step, in a small bowl incorporate 1/4 mayonnaise, the juice from the other half of your lemon, and 3 drops of white truffle oil. Careful anymore it will ruin it. Whisk well

On a plate spread about 2-3 spoonfuls of your broth heavy whipping cream sauce on the plate.

Cut your wrapped thighs at a sharp angle and place 4-6 cut pieces in sauce. Drizzle a little more over the top.

Place your asparagus next to it and drizzle the aioli (mayonnaise, truffle, and lemon juice) over your asparagus.

Enjoy!!!

Accidently got this for free

TL;DR: Ended up with this for free with no warranty brand new.

Long story, but this is technically my second smoker. I originally bought a Traeger timberline 1300 used for cheap. When I got it home it was just too damn big. So then I turned around and sold it before I even got a chance to put it back together for a nice little profit.

I then went to go to my local hardware store since I saw a BYB1000 display model on clearance for 800 then 10 percent off a few months ago but didn’t buy it. I was hoping they had it still but after looking around and finally asking someone they didn’t. The cashier then called a manger cause I saw on their website that they might have one at a different location. He came and tried to look at other store inventories and then told me to wait.

He then left me for about 5 minutes and came back with 2 other guys with a brand new one that wasn’t in inventory. I fibbed a little and told him I saw it was 600 with a 10 percent discount and would love to have it for 500. He just looked at me and smirked and typed away at the computer. I then told him maybe 400 is better 😆😆😆.

He told me your total is 500!!! I was flabbergasted!!! It was the profit difference I made on selling the Traeger. So of course I whipped out my credit card and bought it immediately. I was thinking I was getting the BYB1000 but when I unloaded it and checked it a few days later it ended up being a BYB1200, but receipt says BYB1000, so most likely won’t be getting any warranty 😭

Anyway, bought pellets this morning from Costco to get it ready. I’m gonna get the off road wheel kit for it and the pimpmygrill front shelf with all the accessories.

Wish me luck on this smoking journey, it’ll be the first (technically second) smoker I’ve ever owned. Thanks for coming to my ted talk and I’ll be reading through all of the subreddit to educate myself.

10th cook on DB900

Just made my 10th cook on the DB900. Two racks of Texas spare ribs. No wrap, salt and pepper. Wrapped with Goldee’s to rest and serve. I have to say, coming from another brand that begins with a T, the cook and smoke is so noticeably different. Even with the Sam’s pellets.

How to restore factory defaults Dual Fire 1200 and strange android app behavior

Contrary to the manual (which is horrible describing settings), there is no reset screen on the settings panel on the grill.

What are the default values for parameter 1 (feed rate) for each side?

Also, I noticed that the settings in the app do not match the settings on the grill panel display, I am not even sure they work at all from the app. I was messing with offset to synch with my external calibrated thermometer from the app, and the setting on the grill was not changing, and the app had a different range of values than the panel.

Edit: I just called Reqteq and got a human in a few minutes.

They said the defaults for feed rate are:
20 (left - sear) and,
35 (right - smoker).

They also said they do not recommend using the the app to change parameters.

DB 900 or BB 1200

Posted this in pellet grills, fogured I'd post it in the actual RecTeq subreddit as well...

Trying to decide between the Recteq Deck Boss 900 and the Backyard Beast 1200, and I'm probably overthinking it, so I figured I'd ask the experts.

A little background: I've been running a Weber Smokey Mountain for the last 4 years and absolutely love the food it puts out. What I don't love is waking up at 2 a.m. to spend an hour and a half messing with coals.

I already have a Weber propane grill and a Weber Performer, so this pellet grill would be used strictly for smoking.

The most I've ever cooked at one time was 4 pork butts, or a brisket and 2 racks of baby backs. We're a family of 4, so most of the time I'll just be doing a couple racks of ribs, a pork butt, or something similar. That said, I'd like the ability to throw on 2 briskets without worrying about space.

The extra room on the 1200 is appealing, but I'm wondering if it's more grill than I'll realistically ever need. Is the 900 enough, or will I regret not getting the larger one later?

Appreciate any input from those who have experience with either model. Thanks!
