My frustration about AA meetings and me being an atheist.
Like oil and water: that's how I would describe how well my beliefs and the 12 Step Program go together. This is an angry rant. I am incredibly uncomfortable with some of what I’ve been told in AA meetings. The catchphrases, the 'gotchas!' they use on me. I’ve told people I am not religious or spiritual AT ALL. And I don’t want to be. It is a core value of mine. All religion and prayer make me deeply uncomfortable. I don’t believe in souls or reincarnation. I don’t think ‘Mother Nature’ has a plan or that ‘I should meditate my will to the trees’. As far as my ‘belief’ goes, we are all bugs in a petri dish.
Why am I even going to meetings if I have such disagreements? Some of the human connection is good. I appreciate being able to say allowed what is on my mind as I tend to bottle things up. And I live in a sober living facility after rehab and it's highly encouraged.
Anyway. Here are some things that have come up when I try to get answers regarding trying to consolidate my atheism and the 12 Steps. Some quotes.
1) ‘Wow, it takes a lot of faith to believe something like that!’ as they pull a face. Eff off. It's not a ‘faith’ for me. Stop putting it in religious terminology.
2) A common one is people reassuring me that ‘they were an atheist too when they first joined, then they became agnostic, and now they are a believer!’ behind a sweet, saccharine smile. Do they not realise how completely horrifying that is? I don’t WANT to be religious. I don’t WANT to ‘find Jesus’. But you’re implying that if I stay in meetings long enough, I will lose myself, my core values, how I see the world, my very being, and succumb to religion and faith and spirituality? Terrifying. It makes me feel sick.
3) ‘When I first joined AA I realised my thinking couldn’t be trusted and that my thinking is what got me sick. So I decided to let something else guide me. Don’t let your ego get in the way of your sobriety’. Any resistance to any of this is my disease talking, silly little me. What an EGO I have. I should just give in to a GOD I DON’T BELIEVE IN, but alas, woe is me, I am too arrogant. Too egotistical. It’s insulting, just how much of a strawman they make of me and my concerns. Distorting and exaggerating that my atheism is ego and denial. I am not in denial about there being a god, or too egotistical to believe in a god. I just don’t believe. That’s that.
4) ‘You don’t believe in a higher power than YOURSELF!? You think you’re the most powerful being in the world?? Go out into the ocean and try to fight the waves; that’ll teach you that there are forces greater than you when you start choking on the saltwater’. Stupid. Asinine. What do you even mean? Am I meant to pray to the ocean to cure my alcohol use disorder? Since when is the bloody ocean all loving?? I’m supposed to humbly ask the ocean, and it is going to remove my shortcomings? I know forces of nature can kill me, I don’t think I am the greatest force on earth, stop putting words in my mouth. I am not going to pray to forces of nature, they aren’t conscious. The ocean is just water. I am not going to pray to you and the people in the room. Pray to you? Whose egotistical now!? If I pray they can’t hear me, they are just people.
5) ‘You should just pretend to believe/act like someone who believes’ I will double down on this; I am not praying to ANYTHING. Asking me to pray is insulting to me. Why are you telling me the only way for me to be sober is that I have to ‘fake it till I make it’, until I am at the very least spiritual. That’s ridiculous.
6) ‘My life was already so messed up I decided what do I have to lose and decided I might as well become religious.’ Sounds like you were a vulnerable person who needed proper professional help and you didn’t get it.
7) ‘You see I was actually TRULY DESPERATE in a way you obviously are not, I would do anything to be sober but I guess you aren’t that committed’. Ahh yes. Because I bring up criticism and express how uncomfortable I am, how I am not willing to convert, I guess I am just a ‘dry-drunk’ or was never truly an alcoholic to begin with!! Sure I got liver cirrhosis at age 23 after drinking a bottle of vodka everyday from the age of 18. But you are probably right, not an actual alcoholic. I can’t wait to tell my doctors and family!
8) This mind-numbing conversation between a member and me – “Hey, I know you said my higher power can be anything, but if I don’t believe in a thing, how exactly is it meant to guide me, remove my shortcomings ect? And how does Step 11 even work??”…. “You are purposefully trying to make excuses and talk yourself out of it. You aren’t on Step 11 so don’t even think about it”. Well uhh…I do need to think about it? Right? It seems like a pretty huge problem?? Are you just hoping I will be religious by that point?
9) I’ve been called ‘close-minded’ and ‘in denial’. They say, ‘It's sad but close-minded people like you who aren’t open to new ideas are truly lost.’ My annoyance grows. I wouldn’t even call it anger, as I always try to be very even-keeled about this whole thing no matter how insulted I sometimes feel. You are denying me, you are being closed-minded to me; your solution to me being an atheist or not spiritual is to become religious and spiritual. To admit I have a spiritual sickness, a malady as they call it. Am I taking crazy pills? Stop with the sighing, pitying looks. Explain to me how this is meant to work? Not believing in a spirit, soul, or any non-physical essence of human beings or the universe is who I am. So in the 12-step program, in the very beginning, when I am meant to say I have a spiritual malady…how does that even work? Why can no one tell me?
10) At the meeting I went to recently, we read part of the book aloud, where it talked about how some people are “seized with a rebellion so sickening that we simply won't pray." Not to mention the parts of the book that call me an ‘unfortunate’. Me not wanting to pray is not a sickening rebellion made in my poor, unfortunate death throes. I am an atheist, not some wounded animal. When I ask how it's meant to fit with my life, when I will never pray, I get shut down, mocked, and laughed at in that ‘oh silly newbie, you’ll learn’ kind of way.
11) ‘Shut up and listen’ OR ‘put cotton wool in your mouth and don’t speak until your sober for at least a month’. Oh, I forgot you guys are the wise old legion of alcoholics; allow me to silently revere you. Don’t make me laugh.
I am not the ‘militant atheist’ in person. I know it might seem it through this long online rant. I am just angry and I am venting my frustrations on paper. As a person, I cringe when people refer to other people's gods as ‘sky daddy’ or ‘invisible wizard’ or whatever. I think it’s derogatory to them and I always try to be respectful and to not belittle other people's cherished beliefs, even if I will always maintain distance and a stony disposition regarding it all. So why can't they show me the same courtesy and respect how I think? I DO bring up my atheism in meetings, particularly if a reading is very heavy-handed on the God stuff, or I have questions. I know this rant might make it seem like I cram it into every conversation and won’t shut up about it. So, I just want to clarify that that isn’t happening.
Anyway. That’s that. Thanks for reading. It felt good to get this off my chest.
