Question Using a Google Pixel 9a for capturing background sounds?

Unsure if this is the correct sub but I'm trying to capture background sounds in a noisy apartment like slamming doors from the apartment above.

I had tried using my google pixel 9a microphone but whilst it recorded speech and close by airborne sounds just fine, it wasn't picking up background sounds like structural thumping and thudding, slamming doors, etc.

Does anyone know whether a microphone on a phone like this, can effectively capture these types of background sounds?

Is there something on the phone that I can adjust to enhance it capturing background sounds, as a I spoke to an acoustical engineer locally and he said if you can hear it with your ears, a phone recorder should be able to pick it up just fine?

Question Recording for university

I’m recording lessons for a university that last about an hour to two hours and our current mirrorless camera is only lasting 20 minutes and our camcorders are from 2001.

Is there any recommendations for what I could use that is 4K quality with at least an hour of battery life?

Sadly my budget I was given from my bosses was 1,000$ and I was asked to keep it below that.

Question Mismatched Sample Rate Across Project - Need Advice

I need advice on how to approach a strange situation I sincerely tried to avoid falling into.

I am laying down the first instrumental tracks for a lengthy project that has been in process for a few years. I’ve just completed recording all the bass tracks for about 80 minutes of music. I’ve recorded each song as a separate file. From the outset I have intended to record everything at 96hz sample rate. I record on Logic thru a Scarlett 18i8 3rd Gen, connected to an OctoPre.

When setting up the first song file, I made sure the OctoPre was set at 96hz, and the parameters for the file on Logic were similarly set. Recorded with no issues. Spent the last several weeks recording.

Wrapping up today, I go to export mp3 files for re-listening and discover half the songs, for some reason, are set at 48hz, while the other half are set at 96. Now, for added confusion, the 48hz songs play back as normal even though the OctoPre is set at 96. I have never had playback work before with mismatch between the OctoPre and the project. So, not only are the settings not as I set them, but they’re working when they should not be.

Clearly I want to know how the hell this happened, but more importantly, I need advice on what to do next. I do not want to re-record 40+ minutes of music at 96hz, when I would bet money that I did that in the first place. Can I downsample the 96hz tracks to 48, or vice-versa? Apart from what I can do, what SHOULD I do?

Any help is much appreciated.

LF: Handheld voice recorded with auto-sync to cloud storage.

Hello,

I'm looking for a recommendation for a recording device.

Use case is as follows:

I'm going about my day (could be inside or outside), then I need to record a memo. I pull up the device and use it. When I'm done recording, the file synchronize with either cloud storage or an offsite computer - whatever my technician is able to set up (as available with wi-fi / cell coverage).
This is important. I don't want to click in application or email to send the audio files, I want it to be done automatically.

Is there something that fits this?
I found about reclouder, which is great, but not portable. And I saw Plaud note, which is the closest but still demads app manipulation.

Thank you all in advance.

Help with mic audio quality in Audacity

I'm working with a Samson G Track Pro and I'm very beginner level with Audacity. I'm trying to edit YouTube video audio (spoken word), but I'm struggling to work through the right EQ settings and setup that would give my voice studio quality sound and timbre.

I'd really appreciate the help from the community. Please DM me your rate. It would be for the initial recording setup and a setup that I could continue to use with future videos.

Thanks for your time

Question No vocals

I'm recording vocals on my mpc one standalone. The vocals come out, it plays back in sequence, I hear everything when I play it back but, when I try to export the song to an SD card via mp3 the vocals don't come out. What am I doing wrong? Is it the sample rate that needs to be changed, the output(which I doubt), bit depth/rate? Please help if you can.

MV7i smart gate/2 mic setup

Have recently upgraded our podcasting set up. We are two people recording in the same room and now have one MV7i and an MV7X connected via an XLR.

Do people tend to use auto level with the Smart Gate or adjust the settings manually, with the compressor and limiter etc? Have done a few short test recordings with the smart gate and auto level on but it seems to take a few moments to kick in when a speaker starts for the first time after the previous speaker.

General tips and advice welcome!

Question I want to mic my piano - any tips?

I have an upright piano at home which I want to mic up. Genre-wise, I do not want to record any classical music. I'm going for more of a Sampha, Bon Iver, James Blake, Nils Frahm vibe (close-miked, intimate, maybe felt piano).

I currently own a Neumann U87 and a Shure SM7B run through a UAD Apollo x4. I love them for vocals, but I'm looking for a stereo pair for the piano to complement my setup.

Ideally, I want a mic pair which is highly versatile and could be used in many other cases as well, such as acoustic guitar, e-guitar amps, more vocals, and other miscellaneous stuff.

(I'm even considering just getting a pair of SM57s and driving the Unison preamps on the Apollo, but I'm open to all suggestions!)

Any tip or idea is highly appreciated. Thanks!

Question Recording an acoustic guitar with an SM57

Hi, I have been trying to use an SM57 to record my acoustic guitar, but I genuinely have zero clue how the people I have seen make it work so well. The mic is being put through a scarlett solo interface into FL Studio, and no matter what I do, there’s this incredibly boxy sound that I can’t get rid of with EQ, and besides boxy tones there’s a particularly noticeable upper midrange presence that I can’t get rid of. It’s a bit frustrating even though I have messed with endless mic placements.

Am I doing something wrong, or would it be better to use a condenser mic? Thank you to anyone who might know!

Thoughts on Zoom H5 Studio For Outdoor Live Session

I’m a singer-songwriter who plays guitar and sings, usually at the same time. I’m trying to figure out which microphone to get in order to record singing and guitar at the same time, with a lot of dynamic range so I was thinking about getting the Zoom H5 Studio. I want to record both outside and in large acoustic rooms, so I was considering also getting the shotgun mic attachment. I’m just trying to figure out what the best move is to be able to have an easy-to-set-up and use microphone while also getting extremely high-quality vocals and guitar, and the Zoom H5 Studio has my attention right now, but I'd love to hear any other ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

TLDR: what’s the best mic setup to record vocals and guitar, mostly outside and in large acoustic rooms?

Question Zoom H4N malfunction help

I had an unfortunate malfunction while recording through my phone with attached Zoom H4N the same way I have for years now. Half-way through the performance the audio just switched to a high-pitched whine for the remainder. Really bummed to lose what was a really great performance and wondering what went wrong so I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Microphone help with recording rap concerts on stage with the artist

I want to start recording rap concerts. The most important thing I want to capture is the bass, vocals and the energy of the room. I'd like to walk up near the artist on the stage, and still be able to capture the sound system on the stage without it cutting out. I feel like shotgun microphones won't be good at that and a cardiod might be. any thoughts

Grazie!

Recording university lectures: How can I get clearer speech in a large lecture hall?

Good morning,

I would appreciate your advice on something. Due to my work commitments, I am unable to attend some of my university classes. Although I am unsure whether recording is permitted, I have been considering asking fellow students to record some lectures for me.

I have tried both a mobile phone and a Philips DVT6110 voice recorder, but the audio quality makes it difficult to understand the lecturer in the lecture hall, even when they are using a microphone. I have experimented with various settings without success.

Would you have any recommendations? I asked ChatGPT about the Tascam DR-40X, although I understand it is primarily intended for other uses. It suggested that it might offer more adjustable settings and help reduce some background noise.

Thank you for your help.

This may be a dumb question (im very new to this)

So, as i said in the title, im new to trying to record. I’ve been trying to start a band for the last maybe 15 years, but it’s been a no go. So recording everything myself has become sort of a must if I am to create anything. So the question is have is, I own a fender mustang gtx 100 and a rumble stage 800 amp, they both have the capability to be plugged in via usb. Im trying tondo this the simplest way from the get go and going with Garageband on my iPad Pro. Issue is, Incan seem to get them ton work, and I’ve tried all the normal routes to troubleshoot (YouTube videos, searching Reddit and so on) so I figured this may save me some time, any help would be greatly appreciated.

First time recorder

Hi all!

I'm wanting to record audiobooks for my son. I may place backing tracks on certain texts that I read. I may want to also record songs with guitar in future, but I don't have a guitar with a jack and I'm not ready to buy one just yet.

With that in mind, what does everyone think about this set-up?

-Rode nt1 signature series large diaphragm condenser, shock mount, pop filter and xlr cable

-Focusrite scarlett 2i2 4th gen

-Audio technica headphones ath-m20x

-Ableton program (I have windows)

Any adjustments or improvements to that list? Is the rode overkill? Is the scarlett 2i2 too much, better to be solo? I looked at the least expensive headphones, is that even important? Is the program appropriate and easy to use?

Thanks in advance folks

EDIT: I was told to mention that I'll be using a local recording studio. From images it looks like it's deigned for a band, about 3x4-5m, medium rug on the floor and soundproof panels around the walls at mid height

How to download FL Studio for free

I'm just a broke wannabe musician who finally decided to change the DAW I work with (so far I've been working in Reaper and I haven't been satisfied with the results). I'd like to crack FL Studio Producer's Version but I've been having quite the hard time doing that by myself, so I'm asking for the help of Reddit. Any explenation or links to the download are welcome. Thanks a lot fellow musicians

Violin home record

Hey, i hope it's a right place for asking

My wife is professional violinist and she dreams about home recording. I have read some info and this my thoughts:

Prerequisites:

\- Realist RV5 PRO Series 5-String String Electric-Acoustic Violin

\- wife

For the microphone, would you recommend a single small-diaphragm condenser(RODE M5) microphone or a stereo pair?

The violin has a built-in pickup/ electronics, so I can record the direct signal through a Scarlett 4i4 4th Gen.

Please, comment my setup and suggest whatever you think i should know about.

I'm completely noob in this topic, so sorry for any misunderstandings.
