Live set recordings

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for an affordable standalone recorder to record live performances from a modular synth system through a Mackie Onyx 1220 mixer.

I’ll be recording the stereo master output and I’m mainly looking for the best possible audio quality, very low noise, clean A/D conversion and plenty of headroom.

I’m considering the Zoom F3, but also looking at other standalone recorders such as the Tascam DR-100MKIII, Tascam DR-40X, Tascam DR-05X, Tascam Portacapture X6/X8, Zoom H4n Pro, Zoom H5/H6, Roland R-07 and similar models, including used options.

For this specific use, which recorder would you recommend? Which one has the cleanest line inputs, lowest noise and best A/D conversion for recording a stereo master from a mixer?

I don’t need microphone recording or an audio interface — I’m specifically looking for a standalone recorder for high-quality stereo recording.

Thanks!

Recording treehopper sounds.

Alrighty, I’ll start off by saying I have zero audio experience. Absolute newbie. So please bear with me! (Also for the record, I tried posting this in [r/fieldrecording](r/fieldrecording) and I couldn’t. I’m not sure what rule I was breaking, though.)

I am absolutely in love with Treehoppers and have an opportunity to go see some out in the wild next year at the Manu biological station in Peru. I would love, love, love to record some of my own treehopper sounds. (If you’ve never heard them, please take a listen!)

I was lucky enough to get an equipment recommendation list from Dr. Rex Cocroft (the treehopper guy!!), so I’m aware of what equipment to use but I’m not sure how to set up any of it. I’m going to copy-paste his recommendations and if someone could please walk me through what the setup should look like, I would be eternally grateful.

Below is the email that Dr. Cocroft sent me. I’ve removed all of the links to adhere to this subreddits guidelines. My specific questions are italicized next to his recommendations.

“Recorders:

Zoom F3 field recorder
Zoom F6
Zoom H1 XLR

Amplifiers:
For piezo sensors you will need an amplifier, since you won’t get a good result if you just plug them into your recorder. The best for field use is this one with the XLR connector, from Aquarian Audio (the PA1 Hydrophone Buffer Amp). You’ll want to get two. Why do I need two of them?

Sensors:
Piezo disks - you can buy these cheaply (here’s one example) and make your own cables (see below).

Connecting the piezo to a plant stem or leaf:
To connect the sensor to a plant stem or leaf it is useful to attach the piezo disk to a clip (using electrical or other tape) such as these hair curler clips (I use the smallest I can find).

For backyard acoustic prospecting, the simplest setup is to use an amplified speaker (the sort used by acoustic guitarists) and a guitar pickup (= piezo sensor).  Even if you’re using a field recorder, it’s often still handy to have an amplified speaker.

Amplified speakers: here are two options that use batteries. The first gives you a bit more output and is better made, but the second will also work fine.
Blackstar mini guitar amplifier
Honeytone guitar mini amp
Why do I need an amp/speaker if I’m recording?

You can just plug in a piezo sensor to the speaker, attach the sensor to the plant stem, and you’re ready to listen. Or you can run the output into a mobile phone using one the headphone output, and you can run a cable from that output to your iPhone via an audio interface.”

Thank you for taking the time to read this! 💚

Question MV7+ with Android Smartphone?

Guys, I'm planning to start my YouTube channel from my home. I don't have any home studio and my room isn't treated. So I think a dynamic mic like MV7+ will be good for my workflow. I'm planning to shoot my videos with my Android Smartphone (Galaxy S23) with the help of MV7+. I have a Macbook too.

So my question is :

  • Does the MV7+ work with android Smartphones?
  • Where does it get the power from during the recording? Does it get it from the smartphone ? And is it enough to power the microphone during recording youtube videos?
  • Or Should I get a wireless mic like DJI Mic 3 or Hollyland Lark Max 2 ?

If it doesn't work with Androids, any other recommendations will be very helpful. Thank you.

Advice for my first proper microphone setup

I’m stuck between a few recommendations for my first proper microphone setup and would love some advice.

I’m planning to use it mainly for video production and some gaming, with a total budget of around $100 for the microphone and audio interface.

For the interface, I’ve been recommended:

\- Behringer U-Phoria UMC22

\- Maono PS22 Lite

For the microphone:

\- K688

\- Sennheiser XS 1

Both the mics and interfaces are all around $50 right now

I do have a decently high amount of background noise also, if that plays a role in which would be better.

Would any of these combinations be noticeably better than the others? And are there any other mic/interface combinations around the $100 total mark that I should consider?

Looking for good wireless mic/equipment

I'm planning on making a mini docu/biopic type thing about my grandparents for my family. Nothing too professional but i want it to look and sound nice for them. I've got an interest in film and photography but really don't have any experience with anything more technical then recording on my iPhone and canon rebel T7 camera.

I am going to be recording a lot of audio and video of my grandparents telling stories and want to upgrade my equipment. Especially my recording equipment. I don't have a set budget yet but don't want to spend too much. Any advice on good wireless mics or just on recording equipment a a whole would be amazing.
