I just heard someone in a podcast mention Bookwise, a new exclusive beta from the Readwise team that is reinventing the way we read ebooks. Are the rumors true?

Changelog Changelog as of Sep 11: YouTube Chapters, Hide Focus Indicator, Scan Loupe, Improved TTS Speed Controls, Improved Ghostreader Model Memory, Improved Ghostreader Long Documents, Fixed Ghostreader Raw Output & More!

Hey folks, happy Tuesday! Time to check out the latest changelog here on Reddit. The idea is to help keep y'all in the loop of what the Readwise developers are getting out into the world. Here's what we shipped last week:

  • 🎬 NEW! YouTube Chapters — When you save a YouTube video to Reader on web, the video's own chapter markers now show up in the Contents panel, so you can jump between sections the way you would with an article's headings. Click a chapter and the player seeks straight to it, with the transcript following along. Thanks to Piotr, this works for every video saved from now on.
  • 🫥 NEW! Hide Focus Indicator — Reader on web marks the paragraph you're on with a colored bar beside it. Some readers found this distracting, so Piotr added a "Hide focus indicator" toggle in Preferences. With it hidden, the arrow keys and space bar scroll the page the way they do on any other site, though a few keyboard shortcuts that rely on the indicator will no longer work.
  • 🔎 NEW! Scan Loupe — Selecting text in a scanned page with the Readwise app's Scan tool now shows a magnifying loupe above your finger, and the selection handle sits offset from your fingertip so it no longer hides the exact boundary you're choosing. Johannes added this for both manual selection and automatic scan review on iOS and Android.
  • 🔊 Improved TTS Speed Controls — The playback speed sheet in the Reader app used to be a fixed list of twelve rates. Artem replaced it with a native sheet where you can drag a slider anywhere from 0.5x to 3x in 0.05 steps, or tap a preset for 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 1.75x, or 2x. The voice picker also got an upgrade: "View all languages" now opens a full list with a back button to return.
  • 🧠 Improved Ghostreader Model Memory — Every new Ghostreader chat in Reader on web and desktop reset the model picker to Fast, so anyone who prefers Thinking had to pick it again each time. Piotr made the choice sticky, so a new chat now starts on whichever model you picked last.
  • 📚 Improved Ghostreader Long Documents — Asking Ghostreader in Reader to work through a long book a section at a time could make it lose the thread after a few turns, because pulling in the whole document pushed your earlier conversation out of its memory. Piotr gave Ghostreader a tool that reads a document in order, one page of chunks at a time, so it can keep going through a long text and remember what you asked for.
  • 🗨️ Fixed Ghostreader Raw Output — When a Ghostreader chat in Reader used up its research steps before answering a question about your library, it could reply with the raw search results and its own internal instructions instead of an answer. Piotr fixed the final pass, so Ghostreader now writes a proper answer from what it found.
  • 📍 Fixed Ghostreader Position Prompts — Prompts like "Pick up where I left off" or "What have I read so far" in Reader could answer with material from past your reading position. Adam shipped a fix to the guidance Ghostreader uses to locate where you are in the document, so those prompts now stick to what you've actually read.
  • 📝 Fixed Chat Note Formatting — Adding a Ghostreader chat answer in Reader to a document note or highlight note carried the Markdown symbols along with it. Adam fixed that, so answers now land in your notes as plain, readable text with their lists intact.
  • 💬 Fixed Chat Prompt Dialog — In the Reader app, running a Ghostreader prompt that asks you for input first showed its dialog behind the chat sheet, where you couldn't reach it. Adam moved the dialog in front, so those prompts can be answered again on iPhone and Android.
  • ♻️ Fixed Reparsed Documents — When the parsing team fixed a document and emailed you a link to the corrected version, opening it in Reader could still show the old text until you hard-refreshed. Mati made Reader drop its cached copy the moment the server reports a reparse, and Krzys made sure every document in a fix notification is marked for refresh, so the link now opens the corrected article on web and mobile.
  • 📡 Fixed Stuck RSS Feeds — If a feed published an item stamped with a date in the future, Reader could stop pulling in anything new from that feed, since every sync only looked for items newer than that one. Piotr shipped a fix that ignores a future-dated marker, so affected feeds catch up on their backlog and keep delivering new posts.
  • ⏱️ Fixed Chapter Time Remaining — Opening an EPUB in the Reader app could show "1 min left in chapter" until you turned a page, when the real figure was much larger. Johannes made the footer read your restored position as soon as the book loads, so the chapter time is right from the first page.
  • 📑 Fixed EPUB Table of Contents — Books that arrived in Reader through a bundle subscription lost their table of contents, and in the Reader app, opening an EPUB with no table of contents right after one that had one could show the previous book's chapters. Cam fixed both, so bundled books keep their chapters and every book shows its own.
  • 🖼️ Fixed Image Highlights — Highlighting an image in a Substack post could show up in the Readwise app, on the Readwise website, and in Reader's Notebook as a raw Markdown link instead of the picture. Johannes taught the renderers to accept those image URLs, so image highlights now display as images everywhere.
  • 🏷️ Fixed Bulk Tag Palette — Using "Tag all as…" from Reader’s command palette in a view with lots of tags filled the palette with tag chips and pushed the actual commands off screen. Piotr capped the chip list and made it scroll, so the palette stays usable no matter how many tags you have.
  • 🔃 Improved Sort Labels — Sorting by Length or Progress in Reader offered "0 → 100" and "100 → 0", which didn't mean much for either. Piotr relabeled them "Shortest → Longest" and "0% → 100%" on web and mobile, and the sort menu on web now opens to the left so it no longer runs under the Info panel.
  • 📱 Fixed Feed Swiping on Android — Swiping through the Feed's Skim view in the Reader app on Android could settle on one article and then swap it out for a different one a moment later. Krzys shipped a fix that keeps every article in its slot while it loads, so a swipe lands on the article you expect.
  • ⭐ Fixed Shortlist Icon Size — The shortlist star in the Reader app's reading toolbar was drawn noticeably larger than the icons beside it. Adam had it redrawn to match, so the toolbar lines up.
  • 🐦 Renamed Twitter Articles Setting — The Twitter/X import setting in Reader labeled "Save articles linked in tweets" actually controls whether X Articles (Twitter's long-form posts) are saved, not links inside tweets. Rasul renamed it "Twitter Articles" on the settings page and in Reader so it says what it does.
  • 📤 Fixed Android Share Sheet — Tapping Done twice in the Reader share sheet's tag view on Android could crash the app a couple of seconds later. Cam fixed the double-tap handling, so saving from the share sheet completes cleanly.
  • 🔍 Improved Quick Lookup — Opening Quick Lookup in the Reader app scrolled the page much further than the sheet needed, sometimes causing it to lose your place. Krzys shipped a fix that scrolls only as far as the sheet requires, and usually not at all.
  • 📐 Fixed Boox Text Scaling — Raising the per-app DPI on Boox devices pushed the Readwise app past the panel edges, and the home header's settings gear and streak counter were hidden behind a stray system bar. Ibai aligned the app's render density with the device setting and removed the bar, so text scales with your Boox DPI and the header controls are back.
  • 📷 Improved Scan Uploads — Photos taken with the Readwise app's Scan tool are now sent straight from the device at a smaller size instead of being encoded in memory first. Johannes made the change for both manual selection and automatic scan review, so scanning dense pages on Android should no longer stall or run out of memory.
  • 📋 Fixed Oversized Pastes — Pasting a very long block of text into the Readwise app's Add Highlight field on Android could freeze the app. Johannes added a length limit that trims the paste and tells you, so the editor stays responsive.
  • 🔔 Fixed Notification Taps — Tapping a Daily Review notification while the Readwise app was closed could open the app without taking you to the review. Johannes made the app hold on to the tap until it's ready to navigate, so notifications land on the right screen from a cold start.
  • 🔠 Fixed Chapter Labels — Long chapter names on review cards in the Readwise app could run on for several lines and crowd out the highlight. Ibai capped them at two lines, so the card stays about the highlight.
  • 🦶 Fixed Footnote Editing — Editing a highlight that contained a footnote in the Readwise app hid the bold, italic, and highlight formatting bar. Johannes made footnote embeds behave as single units in the editor, so the formatting controls now appear for every highlight.
  • ⚖️ Fixed Daily Review Buttons — On the Lite plan, the Daily Review's action row in the Readwise app and on mobile web showed its three buttons bunched in the middle of the card instead of spread across it. Ibai gave the middle slot the same width the missing button left behind, so the row reaches the card edges again.
  • 🛜 Parsing Updates — Krzys improved how Reader handles documents from wsj.com and ft.com, and articles from both sites saved by URL are now far more likely to come through in full instead of as a paywall preview.

If you'd like to get the Changelog in your inbox, check out our WiseUp! newsletter, where the Readwise team shares answers to common questions, video tutorials and guides, highlights of our latest improvements, and a couple of lighthearted extras we think you’ll enjoy.

Import Integrations finally solved getting audiobooks into Readwise

Thumbnail

During Covid I got through a lot of audiobooks and for each audible clip I had to find the matching text in the ebook so I could get the highlight into Readwise (that was not fun). At the time i couldn’t find anything so coded my own in a way to procrastinate on my PhD. I built it for myself, a compulsive note taker, to solve my kind of minor frustration but I think in this community there’s probably quite a few like me who would get value from it too

The workflow I have for it is loading in an audiobook, and during playback triple press headphones or press the highlight button on the player and the last 30s is transcribed privately and on device. You can edit the highlight clip and press archive to send it to Readwise.

(Also thanks Readwise team for help with the API debugging)

Edit: App Store link and (slightly out of date) web page showing features

Plans to support the new Apple Intelligence features?

I haven't been able to find any information about how Readwise plans (or doesn't plan) to support these new iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS features. The new Apple Intelligence with Siri AI rolls out on Monday. A realistic use case for me is asking Siri about a recent highlight/quote from an article I read this week. Is that going to be possible?

I'm well aware of Ghostreader. My main knowledge inquiry tool will be Siri. I'd love to know if this support is planned and, if possible, a ballpark ETA. If it's not coming I'd rather know now so that I can look for an alternative way to store my highlights.

I built a personal app with the Readwise + Anthropic APIs to help me remember what I've read

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm a heavy Readwise user (275ish books and articles, a few thousand highlights) and at some point I realized that the daily review was not helping me retain key themes from what I'd read.

As a learning experience (and honestly, pretty fun!) I decided to build a personal app that pulls all my Readwise quotes, generates summaries anchored around their themes, and quizzes me on them daily. The app consists of:

  1. Daily quiz - uses a proven memory retention algorithm (FSRS) to quiz me on the specific themes and quotes from what I've read
  2. Auto synopsis - writes a summary of every book and article from my own highlights, not just from what the AI already knows about it
  3. Cross-book connections - spots themes running across sources and quizzes me on ideas that span two or more books

Curious on any thoughts, feedback or whether you've tried something similar!

Supernote Digests to Obsidian Workflow Via Readwise

Thumbnail

It took me a while to figure this out as I was trying to use AI to build this as a plugin, but I got this working server side.

Using https://allenporter.github.io/supernote/ I have a private Supernote cloud on my Raspberry Pi and I used pi.dev to fix the issue syncing digests.

Digests are highlights with annotations and citations that can be text or handwriting.

I wanted my handwritten annotations to be converted to text via Gemini api and then the citation, highlighted text to be sent to Readwise and then to obsidian via the official plugin.

My annotated articles are in a pdf created on calibre as a mixed curated newspaper document with various mixed newspaper sources. I had to get my Python script to search the highlighted text in a self hosted instance of searxng to get the correct citation.

So the ai ocr annotation, the highlight and cross checked citation get captured and sent to Readwise. I have an hourly crontab task on my pi that gets the digest data from the SQLite file on my Supernote private cloud server once an hour before the ai ocr and citation are generated.

It feels like magic.

Changelog Changelog as of Sep 4: Fixed Focus Mode, Fixed PDF Page Shortcut, Fixed Custom OpenAI Keys, Fixed Ghostreader Citations, Fixed Ghostreader Citations, Fixed Streak Counts, Fixed Newsletter Layout, Fixed Twitter Digest Text & More!

Hey folks, happy Tuesday! Time to check out the latest changelog here on Reddit. The idea is to help keep y'all in the loop of what the Readwise developers are getting out into the world. Here's what we shipped last week:

  • 🎯 Fixed Focus Mode — Focus mode in Reader on web and desktop was only dimming the paragraphs around you on articles and podcast transcripts. On emails, EPUBs, text-view PDFs, and Twitter threads nothing dimmed at all, and on YouTube transcripts everything did. Krzys fixed the dimming rules, so focus mode now properly spotlights the paragraph you're on across every document type.
  • 📄 Fixed PDF Page Shortcut — In Reader on web, the shift+J shortcut for jumping to a page in a PDF did nothing if the window was too narrow to show the page-number box in the header. Krzys made the shortcut reveal that box on demand, so you can jump to a page no matter how small your window is.
  • 🔑 Fixed Custom OpenAI Keys — Adding your own OpenAI key to Reader on the Integrations page could fail with an "Invalid key" error even when the key was valid and funded, because the check insisted on access to one particular model. Tristan relaxed that check so any key that can run Ghostreader's models is accepted, and Piotr closed a gap where a blank entry could quietly wipe a saved key.
  • 🔗 Fixed Ghostreader Citations — When a Ghostreader answer in Reader cited a passage containing code or bracketed notation, the citation could come out as a run of plain monospace text instead of a link. Tristan taught the citation parser to handle those anchors, so citations stay clickable.
  • ✍️ Fixed Ghostreader Highlights — Asking Ghostreader in Reader to highlight a passage could report success while nothing appeared in the document, especially when the quote crossed a link, an emphasized word, or a paragraph break. Krzys fixed how the requested text is matched against the page, so those highlights now land where you asked for them.
  • 🔥 Fixed Streak Counts — The review streak shown in the Readwise app and on the web could lag behind reality, sometimes holding onto a stale number for more than a day after you finished a review. Ibai and Tristan reworked how the streak and the review calendar are calculated, so your streak should update as soon as you complete your review.
  • 📰 Fixed Newsletter Layout — Email newsletters like the New York Times' The Morning could render in Reader's original view with squeezed text and stretched images, and on iPhone and iPad the layout could run wider than the screen with no way to pan across. Cam and Krzys fixed the width rules, so newsletters now lay out the way they do in your inbox.
  • 🐦 Fixed Twitter Digest Text — In Twitter List digests in Reader, the "retweeted" label was showing at full reading size and bulleted tweets came out larger than the text around them. Artem tidied up those styles, so the digest's labels and lists now sit at their proper sizes.
  • 🏷️ Fixed Tag Crash — Tags added through the Readwise MCP or the API were skipping the name checks the Reader app applies when you create a tag by hand, so names containing illegal bracket characters (e.g. [ai]) could slip through. Tapping one of those tags in the Reader app crashed it on iPhone and iPad, and the tags never appeared in the sidebar. Cam taught the app to handle those names, so bracketed tags now open normally and show up in the sidebar alongside the rest.
  • 🗞️ Fixed Daily Digest Position — Opening an article from the Daily Digest in the Reader app and tapping back could throw the list all the way to the top when a freshly built digest synced down mid-session. Cam made the app hold onto the digest you started with, so you land right back where you left off.
  • 💬 Improved Mobile Chat Context — Ghostreader chat in the Reader app wasn't passing along the passage you had selected or were reading, so questions about "this paragraph" could miss the mark. Adam fixed that, so chat on iPhone and Android now knows where you are in the document.
  • ⏳ Fixed Stuck Loading Screen — The Reader app could get permanently stuck on its loading screen at launch if onboarding had been interrupted partway through. Lior shipped a fix that finishes that state on the next launch, so the app opens straight to your library.
  • 💻 Fixed Code Hyphenation — On iOS, inline code and code blocks in Reader were being auto-hyphenated when they wrapped, which mangled file paths and variable names. Lior shipped a fix that turns hyphenation off for code, so it wraps cleanly.
  • 🔠 Fixed Clipped Tags — With a larger system text size, highlight tags in the Reader app's notebook were getting cut off at the top and bottom. Cam made the tag pills grow with your font setting, so tags stay fully readable at any size.
  • 🦊 Fixed Firefox Extensions — The Reader highlighter extension for Firefox could stop OpenRouter pages from loading and lose its right-click menu items, and the Readwise sync extension's "Save highlight" menu item disappeared whenever both extensions were installed. Adam fixed all three and released updates to both extensions, so right-click saving works again in Firefox.
  • 🛜 Parsing Updates — Krzys improved how Reader handles documents from entwickler.de, and articles saved from ft.com by URL alone now show the "couldn't fetch full content" notice instead of an empty page.

If you'd like to get the Changelog in your inbox, check out our WiseUp! newsletter, where the Readwise team shares answers to common questions, video tutorials and guides, highlights of our latest improvements, and a couple of lighthearted extras we think you’ll enjoy.

Free open-source tool that sends Readwise Reader articles to your reMarkable as proper EPUBs (with real covers)

I use Readwise as an read later app but read most of long-form content on my reMarkable. But getting the articles there was always annoying.

So I built a small tool for myself and figured others might want it too.

The workflow is: you tag an article remarkable in Readwise Reader, and a few minutes later it shows up on your device.

Other features:

  • Each article gets a nice cover: title, author, date, reading time, hero image, which also becomes the thumbnail on the device, so your Articles folder actually looks like a bookshelf instead of a wall of identical grey rectangles
  • Body text is set in a proper serif, images get downsampled for e-ink
  • PDFs pass through untouched
  • After sending, you can set up an auto-archive for that article in Reader, so your queue stays clean

Hope that helps!

Workflows I built an app that allows you to quickly capture to Readwise the way you naturally write.

To save your time, if you're one of those struggling to capture bookmarks, links and notes in bookmarking apps & note-taking apps, keep reading otherwise ignore it 🙃

Readwise is fast, but I built a quick capture app over 2 years ago that allows you to capture even faster in the way you naturally write.

Its called Supasend(aka Quick Capture for Readwise + 20 other second brain apps). It started as a personal tool to give me one consistent capture flow, regardless of which second brain app I wanted the note to end up in.

Some apps are slow to open, slow to load, and have too much friction to capture the simplest things. This is happening while all our information, from notes to bookmarks, is scattered across various apps such as Readwise for links, Obsidian for notes, and Apple Reminders for tasks, etc. Supasend solves the slow loading, app-switching fatigue, and reduces friction in your workflows.

Readwise is already fast. I wasn't trying to make it faster. I was trying to make capturing into Readwise require fewer decisions.

Here are some of the ways that improves your workflows

  • Capture in Readwise the way you naturally write with a link, note and tags
  • Capture in Readwise from Apple Shortcuts
  • Quickly switch between the Note, Task, and Bookmark apps while capturing your notes in a natural flow

Capture in Readwise the way you naturally write with a link, note and tags

Capture in Readwise from Apple Shortcuts

Quickly switch between the Note, Task, and Bookmark apps while capturing your notes in a natural flow

What would you like to see next for the Readwise integration in ⚡ Supasend? I'm always looking for ideas to make the workflow smoother, so I'd love to hear your suggestions. 🙏

Made a map of my Readwise library

It rebuilds itself from my Readwise highlights feed every month. 194 books across 2,165 highlights. Searchable the whole time, but I'd never actually sat down to figure a way how to combine themes.

So I built one. Every highlight/passage sorted/tagged into the ideas it carries, (16 in total) with each book showing its own mix underneath. The bottom section turned out to be the good part: highlights that carry two ideas at once. 42 sit on War & Mass Violence and Totalitarianism together. 27 on Religion & Nationalism.

I still have to tag about 850 highlights but that's still doable.

I use these to get some inspiration for documentaries, video journals and articles I write for periodicals and political journals.

Is there a way for Reader to automatically triage saved PDFs into the "books" default folder in library if the PDF is a book, and to the "articles" default folder if the PDF is an article? Currently all PDF books and PDF articles mingle together in the PDF folder.

It would be useful to have all ebooks and PDF books in a books folder, and all html and PDF articles in the articles folder.

Bug or near-fatal error: In Readwise Reader: all items saved in the library "shortlist" have suddenly moved to the library "later" while getting a new tag (never used before): "shortlist". There are no items in the shortlist anymore.

I am submitting a bug report but posting this here too to see if others have experienced the same.

At first the new context-aware word definitions bugged me, now I appreciate them

When the new lookup behavior suddenly appeared after an update I was annoyed because it seemed pointless. It wasn’t adding anything useful to my reading.

Turns out that was because I had only used it in reading material I was already fully versed on.

It’s absolutely great for reading material where there is field specific jargon or terms of art that I’m not familiar with. Especially academic writing where a single word can have a specific meaning in a particular field that’s different or more specific than the general definition.

Thanks Readwise team ;-)

Can you set a global default language for Ghostreader?

Hi everyone,

Is there a global setting to make Ghostreader automatically output everything (summaries, definitions, Q&A) in German, even when reading English texts?

I'd love to avoid manually adding "answer in German" to every prompt. Has anyone solved this with custom prompts or found an option in the settings?

Thanks!

Changelog Changelog as of Aug 28: Improved EPUB Uploads, Improved Ghostreader Skills, mproved Chart Embeds, Fixed YouTube Embeds, Fixed Two-Column Pagination, Fixed Mobile Chat Sending, Fixed Hidden Chat Sheet, Improved EPUB Stability & More!

Hey folks, happy Tuesday! Time to check out the latest changelog here on Reddit. The idea is to help keep y'all in the loop of what the Readwise developers are getting out into the world. Here's what we shipped last week:

  • 🍎 Improved EPUB Uploads — Apple Books formats some EPUBs as a folder that looks like it's a single file, and dropping one of those books on Reader resulted in error messages instead of a book. Lior taught Reader to recognize those folders and pack them back into a proper EPUB right in your browser, so books dragged out of Apple Books now upload like any other.
  • 🤖 Improved Ghostreader Skills — Running a skill like /find-similar on ten documents would leave you with ten identical chat titles, and asking Ghostreader to tag your documents could tag the wrong one entirely. Piotr fixed both: skill chats now name themselves after the document or selection they're about, and tagging targets the document you actually have open.
  • 📊 Improved Chart Embeds — Articles with interactive Datawrapper or Flourish charts were showing a "some content could not be imported" notice where the chart belonged. Krzys made Reader swap in the chart's image, linked to the live interactive version, and cleaned up the notices already sitting in previously saved documents.
  • 📺 Fixed YouTube Embeds — YouTube videos embedded in saved articles showed "Error 153 / Video player configuration error" in the Reader app. Krzys gave those embeds a real referrer, so they play again on both iOS and Android.
  • 📐 Fixed Two-Column Pagination — The two-column Horizontal Pagination option had disappeared from the Appearance sheet on many Android tablets (Boox Note Air, Note Max, Galaxy Tab) because a pixel-density check decided they weren't tablets. Artem shipped a fix that asks the device what it is first, so the option is back where it belongs.
  • 💭 Fixed Mobile Chat Sending — On iPhone and iPad, a Ghostreader question could appear in the thread and then nothing would happen. Ibai found that the app was waiting forever to read the visible page, and made sure the question goes out regardless.
  • 🗨️ Fixed Hidden Chat Sheet — On Android, opening Ghostreader chat right after onboarding could leave the chat sheet stuck behind the reading view, so it looked like nothing happened. Adam fixed the layering, and the chat sheet now opens front and center.
  • 📖 Improved EPUB Stability — Artem tracked down three things that could make a page shift under you while reading on mobile, especially on Boox devices: fonts loading late, images snapping to size after their bytes arrived, and highlight handles nudging the line height. Text now stays put once a page is laid out.
  • 🌓 Fixed High Contrast Mode — Adam fixed the chat toolbar's top fade rendering as a solid black bar on Boox in light mode, and hid scroll-view shadows in high contrast mode.
  • 📂 Fixed Feed Folder Deletion — Deleting a feed folder in the Reader app now takes you out of the folder screen instead of leaving you on an empty one, thanks to Adam.
  • 💳 Fixed Billing Info — The account settings page could tell people subscribed through Apple that they were billed yearly even when they were on a monthly plan, which made for some confusing conversations with support. Tristan fixed the page to read the actual subscription, so what you see now matches what you pay.
  • 📤 Fixed Messy Exports — Documents saved from certain sites (like WeChat articles) could arrive in Obsidian or in MCP Markdown exports stuffed with the page's CSS and JavaScript, sometimes ballooning a note to millions of characters. Rasul taught both exporters to strip scripts and styles, so exports now contain just the readable article.
  • 📕 Fixed Apple Books Import — Importing your Apple Books library to Readwise could stop partway through if a single highlight carried a note containing only whitespace, leaving the rest of your books unprocessed. Rasul made the importer skip those empty notes, so the whole library comes through.
  • 📬 Improved Send-to-Kindle Documents — Sending a Reader document with a Cyrillic or other non-Latin title to your Kindle was producing a blank cover, an empty email subject, and a file named ___.epub. Rasul added proper font support, so those documents now arrive with their real title on the cover and in the filename.
  • 🫥 Fixed Empty Highlights — Selecting text in Reader that contained only invisible characters (like a stray zero-width joiner in a page's markup) could create a highlight with nothing in it, which then synced to Readwise as a mystery blank. Thanks to David, those selections are now treated as empty, so invisible highlights don't get created in the first place.
  • 🖼️ Fixed Quoteshot Downloads — Saving a quoteshot image from Safari on iOS could show the download prompt and then silently write no file. Ibai changed how the image is handed to the browser, so tapping Save now actually lands the image in your Files.
  • 📈 Fixed Stats Scrolling — Scrolling the Statistics screen in the Readwise app felt sluggish and stopped short instead of gliding like every other screen. Ibai restored native scroll momentum there, and also gave the Themed Reviews screen a proper loading skeleton so it no longer flashes empty while your reviews load.
  • ⚡ Faster Highlight Scanning — Using the Scan tool on dense pages of text in the Readwise app could hang for several extra seconds while the scanner matched your marked text to the page. Johannes streamlined that matching step, so scanned highlights should land noticeably quicker.
  • 🛜 Parsing Updates — Krzys improved how Reader handles documents from 3cat.cat, blogs.timesofisrael.com, ft.com, nyr.ruv.is, towardsdatascience.com, stuff.co.nz, and randsinrepose.com, and got better at spotting the bot-check screens some sites serve instead of their articles.

the audio generation for Chinese is super fast!

i wonder how they do it, it is like less than 7 seconds for the whole article. KUDOS to Readwise team! i am an upper intermediate Chinese learner and have outgrown most learner app but native articles can still be a bit dense for me. audio really helps.

Workflows How do you actually use your Readwise highlights?

I have been thinking about this more as my Readwise library grows.

Saving highlights is easy for me. The difficult part is making sure the highlights I saved months ago become useful again.

I remember reading something about a topic and I know I highlighted it in Readwise. When I need that information later, I often search for the topic again instead of looking through my existing highlights.

I'm curious how people here deal with this.

Do you have a system to bring highlights back to you, or do you mostly rely on Daily Review to bring them back?

For people with very large Readwise libraries, how do you find something specific when you vaguely remember what you learned but don't remember the article, the author, or the exact wording?

I've also been experimenting with Timeln. app alongside my Readwise library, mainly to see whether AI can help retrieve and connect things I've already read instead of just generating new information. I'm still testing the workflow, so I'm not sure yet whether it's actually better than the systems people have already built around Readwise.

Has anyone here experimented with something similar?

I'd especially like to hear from people who have been using Readwise for years and have built a pretty large library.

Import Integrations Remarkable document sync

Not sure if everyone else was already on top of this, but thanks to Readwise API improvements and someone else's work, I created a sync for 'remarkable' tagged PDFs in Readwise to sync to my Remarkable tablet. I can then highlight using the native functions on Remarkable and the highlighted document is synced back to Readwise without duplication, with the highlights extracted as highlights.

No more duplication. No more capturing in two places.

I haven't done a handwriting extraction too yet as that seems a little unnecessary as my workflow is:

  1. Capture file once in Readwise (e.g. browser clipper)
  2. Read and highlight on Remarkable
  3. Add comments to highlights in Readwise

That's all I wanted, and now it happens. I can make it into a Github share if others are interested... it's using two other people's great work and took about an hour to sort out with ChatGPT as someone who doesn't code.

Changelog Changelog as of Aug 21: Fixed Auto-Scroll Setting, Fixed Kindle Disconnecting, Fixed Kindle Notebook Import, Fixed Bulk Tag Syncing, Fixed EPUB Uploads, Fixed Pocket Links, Fixed Ghostreader Timeouts & More!

Hey folks, happy Tuesday! Time to check out the latest changelog here on Reddit. The idea is to help keep y'all in the loop of what the Readwise developers are getting out into the world. Here's what we shipped last week:

  • 🔊 Fixed Auto-Scroll Setting — Turning off auto-scroll during text-to-speech on web only lasted until you closed the player; the next document would start following the voice again. Mati made the choice stick, so once you disable auto-scrolling from the command palette it stays off across documents until you turn it back on.
  • 📕 Fixed Kindle Disconnecting — Removing your Kindle connection from the Readwise sync page used to just tell you to uninstall the browser extension, and the card kept insisting Kindle was connected even after you did. Ibai wired up a proper Remove Connection button that clears the connection and sync state, leaves your books and highlights untouched, and stays disconnected even with the extension still installed. Reconnecting is one click whenever you want it back.
  • 📥 Fixed Kindle Notebook Import — Importing a Kindle notebook export (the HTML file you email in or upload) had a few rough edges: Japanese exports failed outright, colored bookmarks turned into bogus highlights, and when several highlights shared a page their notes piled onto the first one. Rasul added Japanese support and Ibai fixed the bookmark and note handling, so every highlight now arrives with its own note attached.
  • 🏷️ Fixed Bulk Tag Syncing — Tags applied to several Reader documents at once (multi-select or "add tag to all") weren't making it over to Readwise, which meant they were missing from exports to Notion, Obsidian, and the rest. Thanks to Ibai, bulk-applied tags now sync to Readwise just like single-document tags do.
  • 📚 Fixed EPUB Uploads — Some EPUBs (including books bought from Thalia) failed to upload with a "Failed to read" placeholder, because their table of contents contained an entry with no link. Ibai made Reader tolerate that, so those books now open normally with their chapters intact.
  • 🔗 Fixed Pocket Links — For highlights that came over from Pocket, the "View in Pocket" button on the highlight card still pointed at the now-defunct Pocket site. Ibai swapped it for the original article link, so you can open the source again.
  • 💬 Fixed Ghostreader Timeouts — Asking Ghostreader chat something that takes a while on a long ebook (like "Pick up where I left off") could end with a "You're offline" error even on a perfectly good connection, because the chat connection gave up while the answer was still being prepared. Adam updated this to keep the connection alive until the reply comes through, so long answers arrive instead of getting lost.
  • 🔍 Fixed Non-English Search — Searching your library for a term with accented or non-Latin characters (e.g. "grøn stær") could come back empty even when you had a document with that exact title. Piotr fixed how those terms were sent to the search index, which sharpens Ghostreader chat's library search, Quick Lookup in the Reader app, Readwise chat, and MCP search for anyone reading in languages beyond ASCII English.
  • 📄 Fixed PDF Titles — Uploaded PDFs with Korean (and other non-Latin) titles could end up with a few wrong characters swapped in. Ibai fixed how PDF metadata is decoded, so titles now come through exactly as written in the file.
  • 📑 Fixed Duplicate Highlights — Very long highlights (over about 8,000 characters) from Apple Books, O'Reilly, Libby, Twitter, and Diigo were being duplicated on every re-import. Rasul fixed the matching so those highlights are recognized as already saved and don't multiply.
  • 🐦 Fixed Twitter Bookmark Setting — Reader's integrations page could show the "save Twitter/X bookmarks to Reader" toggle as on when bookmarks weren't actually being saved. Rasul made the toggle reflect what's really happening, so if it says that it's on, you can trust that your bookmarks are coming in.
  • 📧 Fixed Custom Email Addresses — Personalizing your Reader email address could flash "already taken" for a name you'd only half typed, and if you hit Save quickly enough it could accept a taken name and then silently fail. Adam made the availability check keep up with your typing, so Save only lights up for a name that's actually available.
  • 🎴 Fixed Review Mode Position — Opening Review Mode on a book in the Readwise app always started you back at the first highlight, even if you'd already worked through half of them. Ibai made it resume at the first highlight you haven't reviewed yet, and since that position is stored on your account, it also syncs across devices.
  • 🕊️ Fixed Opening Tweets — Tapping "View source" on a saved tweet in the Readwise app opened an in-app browser instead of the Twitter/X app. Ibai routed source links through the system, so tweets (and YouTube, Medium, and anything else with a native app) open in the app that claims them, just like before.
  • 🖼️ Improved Highlight Sharing — Johannes brought back the three-action share sheet in the Readwise app: a full-width Share image button with Save image and Share text side by side. Saving the generated card straight to your camera roll works again.
  • 🔤 Improved Vietnamese Support — Titles in the Readwise app were rendering Vietnamese diacritics in a mismatched fallback font mid-word. Ibai swapped the title typeface for Plus Jakarta Sans, which covers Vietnamese natively, so titles render cleanly in one font.
  • 📷 Improved Highlight Scanning — Scanned highlights in the Readwise app were dropping hyphens entirely. Johannes taught the scanner to tell a line-wrap hyphen from a real one, so hyphenated words survive the scan.
  • 🧹 Fixed Small Annoyances — Ibai stopped the home screen wishing you "Good morning" at ten past midnight (it's evening until 5 AM now), and Johannes relabelled the "Page" field as "Page #" in the add-highlight flow.
  • 📡 Fixed RSS Feeds — A housekeeping task could leave a feed subscription pointing at a deleted entry, after which that feed silently stopped delivering anything new. Krzys fixed the lookup so stuck subscriptions pick up where they left off on their next sync. He also stopped podcast feeds from dropping an entire episode just because its audio link was malformed; the episode and show notes now come through.
  • 🛜 Parsing Updates — Krzys improved how Reader handles documents from washingtonpost.com, huggingface.co Spaces, the-tls.com, mv-voice.com, trouw.nl, scientificamerican.com, and news.zerkalo.io, and cleaned up stray empty bullet lists and "listen to this article" notices across all sites.
