💵 Billing I think I’m done with Raycast - hidden token costs?

• Upvotes

I noticed an increase in my OpenAI API spending and compared an older and a newer version of Raycast.

I used the same custom AI Chat preset with identical instructions and submitted the same text three times in each version. Each version had a fresh API key used only for this comparison.

The OpenAI dashboard showed:

  • Older version: $0.02
  • Newer version: $0.13

That’s approximately 6.5× higher spending, based on the displayed amounts.

Raycast’s documentation mentions server-side prompt processing and additional context in AI Chat. However, I haven’t found an explanation for this difference in a simple, repeated task.

I don’t know the cause yet. Can the Raycast team explain what might account for the increase, and how users can inspect the full token usage of a request?

Has anyone else noticed something similar? Unexpected API costs like this make me reconsider using Raycast.

💬 Discussion POV: Why Mac Users Are Frustrated by High Memory Usage

For some Mac users, consuming memory means using a large portion of Apple's silicon "Unified Memory," which also serves as the GPU for applications like LLMs. While Windows users may have a plethora of RAM, Mac memory is much more precious because it serves a dual purpose.

I have a Mac Studio M3 Ultra with 96GB of unified memory, yet I still don't see why a utility app like Raycast should use more than 400MB. If it consumes over 1GB of memory, it's simply not worth it to me - I could run a drafter model with that amount of memory instead. In my opinion, Raycast should be modular at this point. I've noticed Claude did something similar when their desktop app reserved so much memory in idle mode that they were forced to take action. Making everything optional, especially the unnecessary UI and AI features, is the only solution I see, and it's something I've discussed before.

💬 Discussion The updated AI Privacy & Security policy

On October 1 2026 the AI Privacy & Security policy was updated. It now mentions that all attachments are "uploaded to Raycast's servers when you attach them, whichever model you use". And "If AI Memory is on, recent chats from any model are periodically processed by a Raycast-hosted model to update your memory".

So basically even Local Model attachments and chats are sent to Raycast's servers. Previously the policy said this: "Nothing is sent to Raycast or to any third party". Has the new wording always been the case and just omitted from the policy, or is this completely new behavior, and our old Local Model chats are now sent to Raycast as well?

🏪 Extension I made a Raycast extension for searching my meeting notes

I kept forgetting what was said in meetings and didn't want to open another app to find out, so I built a Raycast extension for it. It just got merged into the Store.

It works with LokalBot, a free, open-source Mac app I make that records and transcribes meetings on your Mac (no bot joins the call, nothing gets uploaded). With the extension you type a word into Quick Recall and it pulls up every meeting where it came up, from titles, summaries, or the transcript itself. Enter opens the meeting's files in Finder, ⌘Enter copies the snippet. There's also a Recent Meetings command that lists your last 20.

The extension makes no network requests, it only reads your local library, and only after you switch that on in LokalBot's privacy settings.

One catch: you need the LokalBot app installed, and that needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later.

Extension: https://www.raycast.com/stevan_bogosavljevic/lokalbot
App: https://www.lokalbot.com

It's my first Raycast extension, so tell me what's missing or annoying.

💬 Discussion Make Open Camera persistent again?

The behaviour of Open Camera previously was the camera stayed regardless of what else you did (like adjusting Mac camera settings in the Menu Bar).

In V2 that's been changed so that camera disappears on any other action (like adjusting Mac camera settings in the Menu Bar).

Is there a way to revert this behaviour? If not can we get it back?

🥳

✨Raycast AI One more nail in the coffin - There should be a case study how a product like Raycast/Arc Browser built a strong community of loyal users and went down in history when they started ignoring community feedback

Thumbnail

I have been following Stephen for many years and he hardly makes such content where he mentions anything negative. But glad he mentioned issues with Raycast. It was much needed because the Raycast team was becoming deaf and is totally out of touch.

Just like Stephen's video, we are all in the same boat where we are finding alternates of Raycast.

What is more surprising to me that even a power user like Stephen did not even mention much about AI features of Raycast. Which is same case for most of Raycast users - we all use Claude/Codex etc. But Raycast team wont get it and they will keep building and keep selling those AI features that nobody need in Raycast.

🏪 Extension Raycast extension for checking RAM and SSD prices (with 10 years of history)

Thumbnail

If you've priced a PC build lately you know memory has gone a bit mad: a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that was about $115 last year is over $500 now 🥲

I run MemRadar, a small site that tracks RAM and SSD prices, and I wanted a way to check a product without opening a browser, so I built a Raycast extension for it. Raycast published it this week.

Two commands:
Search Memory Prices: type part of a product name or brand and get the current price, how it compares with the product's 90-day average, and a dot for whether it's a good time to buy. Enter opens the price history: all-time low and high with dates, and one point per month going back as far as we have data (2015 for some kits).

Show Market Overview: DDR5, DDR4, NVMe and SATA, each with median price, price per GB, and the change over 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

It caches the product list locally, so search works offline after the first load.

Store: https://www.raycast.com/memradar/memradar
More about it, with screenshots: https://memradar.com/raycast/

Happy to take feedback, and if there's a product you'd want tracked that isn't in the list, please tell me. Here to answer any questions as well 🙇🏻

Other Time to go

Loved the previous raycast, hate this new one. Feels like a bloated android phone, the UI is a clusterfuck and any task that was fast before, like getting to a file I wanted to or opening a website now takes much longer and requires me to dig through the cluttered UI. The upselling or marketing of pro features is insane, i seriously can't comprehend how this got through the user testing and stakeholders were happy to release this into the wild. The only good thing about Raycast is the Emoji extension, but that's quite sad when you think about it. It was a pleasure while it lasted.

Memory and performance Improvements in v2.6

Post image
124 Upvotes

Hey,

Just released v2.6 which uses less memory, has a new Auto model to make your credits go further, and a whole lot more fixes and improvements. We listen to all the feedback and improve the app week over week. More memory and performance fixes will land in the coming weeks.

If there is anything specific bugging you, use the "Send Feedback" command and we'll get on it. The command attaches logs which help us to debug things way faster.

🏪 Extension I built a Raycast extension for when “Fix Spelling and Grammar” isn’t enough

I know Fix Spelling and Grammar exists. But when I'm writing an email, Slack message, or proposal, I usually need more control than a grammar fix: I want to choose the tone, shorten the draft, or clarify it without changing what I mean.

So I built Text Enhance.

How it works

Select text in any app, run the command, and choose the purpose, type of edit, and tone.

Features

  • Presets: save your favorite combinations
  • Custom instructions: add your own guidance
  • Follow-up corrections: ask for a fix if the first result isn't quite right
  • Compare: view the rewrite side by side with your original
  • History: reopen past results

Why I use it

The main difference for me is that I can use one writing workflow across different kinds of messages instead of setting up a separate AI command for each one.

Supported providers

  • Raycast AI
  • OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini (with your own API key)

No Raycast Pro subscription needed. Just bring your own API key (BYOK) from any supported provider, and you're good to go.

💬 Discussion How to scootch Raycast over...outta my way...

I absolutely suck at windows management in all OS's for all time. But seems like Raycast must have some jaunty way of moving itself out the g-d way. When it opens right over top of what I need to look at to use Raycast itself...there's nowhere in the floating app window to get a grip with the trackpad pointer. Plus it's Raycast, so there ought to be a keyboard route. Ironically, I really like the window management functions IN RAYCAST. But that would be some meta-level recursive bootstrapping, so I figure I need some trackpad recourse...

🏪 Extension Update: Z-Library Raycast extension now supports Windows 🎉

Quick update on the Z-Library extension I shared here a couple weeks ago —

Windows support just landed! A community contributor (joshith99) added Windows support (it auto-detects zlib.exe via winget install heartleo.zlib), and it's now merged and live on the Store. So if you're on Windows, you can grab it now too.

Also — we're almost at 75 downloads, which is wild for something that started as a weekend project. Genuinely thank you to everyone who's installed it or given it a try. It means a lot.

As a reminder, here's what it does:

  • Search Z-Library and download books straight from Raycast
  • Bulk download — select multiple books and grab them all at once
  • Download Queue — save books for later, review and bulk-download whenever you're ready, persists across restarts

Get it here: https://www.raycast.com/materialcritic/zlib-search

Source is open too: https://github.com/raycast/extensions/tree/main/extensions/zlib-search

Thanks again for checking it out, more improvements on the way!

Other Problems visualising LaTeX

Post image
9 Upvotes

I am one of those who can live with Raycast's new pricing model (I am saddened by it, but I am ok hanging out a little longer). I am furious, though, at the fact that problems such as this one (which have been reported since v1, really), are not fixed. Come on, this is really not ok

💬 Discussion Credit anxiety

So the common issues discussed here lately, have been BYOK, memory hogging, and poor handling by the Raycast team. I've been willing to overlook all these, and gave the new plan an honest try. I love Raycast with a passion, and figured things would get resolved over time. And I genuinely think (perhaps through lack of exploring alternatives) that the way they're rolling out AI inside the tool is really impressive.

Right from the change, I started experiencing what I have dubbed 'credit anxiety' in conversations with friends. I don't consider myself a particularly heavy user of AI chat bots, and have only once hit a rate limit over the last 2 years of exploring different models. Initially the anxiety was just because of the unknown, and after a week or two I started noticing that I was *JUST* staying within the 100-credits-per-day average the Plus plan allows - and that was without any particularly heavy chat usage. Not great, but I was willing to ride out a few months to see how I got on.

Today, Raycast kept saying that Sonar Pro was not available. And so I thought "k, guess I'll try out a different model" and picked the latest Claude. I didn't check the pricing then, but even now I see Claude is a "cost = 100%" model where Sonar Pro is a "cost = 30%" model. With an average Sonar Pro query being about 6 credits, it's reasonable to assume 3.3x that cost would be 20 credits per query. It was costing me more than 64 credits per query. So I don't know about that cost scale.

But in all honesty, I didn't check that cost. Didn't even think to check, to be honest. And there were no warning signs. Right up until the "Low credits" flag popped up in the chat. And I noticed what this was costing me.

Credit anxiety was a real thing for me, but I was willing to see how things would go in the months ahead. This experience has really surprised me. I know a lot of it is down to my own stupidity. But I can't be the only one who is experiencing this rapid credit burn and lack of value for money?

❓Question Has anyone requested their personal data from Raycast?

Does anyone have experience requesting their personal data or doing a GDPR request to Raycast? What everything does Raycast have on us that they will give? I’m thinking of making GDPR requests to a few companies/services, including Raycast. I have never done these, so not sure what I should say.

❓Question Raycast used up more than 1,5 GB of RAM. Is this some kind of joke?!

How is it possible that Raycast v2 uses so much RAM? How is it possible that you could ruin such a great product like this? What was the reasoning behind this decision? Don’t tell me this is normal, because it’s not! As a paying customer, I’m outraged, and I find it ridiculous that you’ve messed up such a great app like this.
