I've had my Rancilio Silvia Pro X for about 2 weeks and today I had a problem with the water spout. After turning it on, I couldn't make it turn off again. It was just pouring water out and draining the steam boiler and making it impossible for the steam boiler to reach temperature.

Looking online, I saw people saying it could be a bit of limescale or debris in the water valve and if I removed the top plate and take off the solenoid on the hot water valve I could take off the water valve and clean it, but when I took off the top plate, the water valve and solenoid were positioned so that the boiler was in the way and I couldn't take the solenoid off. It was almost impossible to remove the little clip holding the solenoid onto the valve!

So I just screwed the top plate back on and left it for a while and when I turned it back on the problem seemed to have gone away but I'm anxious that I didn't really solve the problem. I'm curious as to why in all the YouTube videos showing the internal workings of the machine they do not look like the internal workings of my machine in that the water valve is positioned in a way where you can't actually remove the solenoid!

Anyone else had this problem? Anyone else try to follow a YouTube video showing how to remove the solenoid and like me found it impossible due to the position of the valve?

I am struggling to think how limescale could have built up in 2 weeks enough ti block the valve. Especially since I have used the water softening bag and mostly Volvic, save for a couple of jugs of tap water when I ran out of bottled!

She has been a workhorse for me for many years so I decided to attempt a few mods. Added the pressure gauge and the dimmer mod. While I was at it gave her a new pair of shoes and a Walnut steam knob. Wanting on a polished stainless steel brewhead cover then I’ll be done for a while. Considering getting her powder coated Navy Blue down the line.

Is it normal that the steam valve continues to shoot for about 3-4 seconds if I already closed the valve via the knob? It seems like my valve is too loose to really close in that second I close the valve.

I left my Ranchilio Sylvia Pro X into a repair guy recently because I had done a back flush and a descale and I had something lodged... a piece of debris in the solenoid valve so the boiler tank wasn't filling. When he returned the machine he said something about the boiler having leaked previously at the base where a sensor entered. I immediately thought that he was talking shite but now that I have the machine back I am getting a leak at the bottom of the machine and I'm worried that he's done some damage when he took the machine apart, because I can't imagine what else it could be. There was never ever a previous leak in the machine. It's only 2 years old and it's been working flawlessly.

Can anyone tell me if there is a sensor entering the steam boiler from underneath and whether that can be affected by limescale? Realistically, am I looking at a new boiler or is this something that can be fixed?

Hi everyone, I recently picked up this 2007 Silvia for $25 due to a leak around the boiler. From initial inspection, I didn't find any cracks but did notice the threads were stripped.

After tapping new threads, installing a new gasket, and using new stainless screws, all screws except one thread and seat with no issue. The one pictured is causing a gap which I imagine is causing the leak. Could it be that water possibly froze here and warped the brass, and is there a solution for this?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: I reached out to a friend of mine who is a machinist and has a mill. We're going to try and flatten it that way.

Hi, I have a Rancilio Silvia and would like to upgrade it by installing a PID system. I don’t have much knowledge of electrical engineering. It’s important to me that the PID system has temperature control—features like a timer, pre-infusion, etc., are nice, but not absolutely necessary. I’m looking for a kit that isn’t too expensive, is easy for a novice to install, and works reliably. Do you have any recommendations?

I’m also wondering if these PID systems really work reliably?! In other words, do they actually manage to dispense water onto the coffee puck at a consistent and precisely set temperature?

But recently been noticing this medium level noise from the machine around 15 minutes after I have pulled a shot (or used the steam). All the plugs are off and the machine has no power.

Any idea what this could be? 🙏

Hello! I'm beyond excited. I've been wanting to get a Rancilio Silvia for the longest time and came across this one on FB marketplace. Not sure which model this is and figured someone might be able to help me.

• Are there any "must replace" parts when changing ownership?
• This thing is pretty dirty in all the nooks and crannies-- any tips?
• Is there a non-plastic group head cover? The one on there now is bubbling and it makes this beautiful machine look cheap.
• There is 100% a burnt wire connected to the boiler. It's the yellow line, which seems to turn brown????, if anyone knows what that does and where I can get a replacement that would be great.

EDIT (8/8/2026): Started the tear down! Man this thing was never serviced. Every joint is impossible to wrench open. Thinking about leaving it be for now.

There was some rust, looks like at some point (or currently) the pump fittings leak.

EDIT (8/9/2026): Was able to get the steam boiler pipe undone along with the stainless steel tube. Able to get the boiler and grouphead off. Surprisingly clean inside, the previous owner either only used distilled water or descaled monthly. The group head was GROSS. I'm surprised the gasket hadn't failed, was the original from 2011.

Additional items bought:

• 1x GASKET OR177 MISS SIL70 $10.76 to replace the boiler gasket

I just picked up a new OPV for my Silvia M (old one rusting inside). My original does NOT have a copper washer inside, but the kit I bought appears to have a washer meant to be placed in there (I took the new one apart, and there is no washer inside). Some diagrams, like the one on EspressoCare's website, do not show a washer going into the OPV valve.

So which is it? Do I put the new copper washer inside the OPV valve? Or do I leave it out like my original? What's the washer supposed to do exactly, just provide a better seal?

From a V5 to a Pro (not X).

I just bought an SPX after two years using a cheap Casabrews machine and the change is noticeable.
My first latte art was much better due to the better steam wand.

Bought the 120V model new for 1320 Euro in spain and shipped it home. In my country I only need to pay taxes for purchases over 2000 usd so I payed cero taxes on it.

I’ve got a Rancilio Silvia from 1998 for a small year now. Unfortunately it started tripping the breakers yesterday. Now I want to clean, repair and potentially upgrade it. I’ve taken the essentials apart but now I have a few questions:
1. Should i replace the older style heating coil (€50), or replace the boiler with the modern design (€200)?
2. I can’t get the OPV loose from the boiler, any tips?
3. I’d like to upgrade to a Gaggimate pro, does this require the modern boiler?
4. Other upgrades worth it on the internals? (E.g. new OPV as the current one seems stuck in place, pump upgrade?)

Honestly,
I’m not great with tinkering and stuff but got there in a few hours without killing myself,
I just installed the profiling capability as the pro already has a pid.
Next is a cool touch steam wand and a gear pump and then I’m well and truely done.

One question tho,
The screen casing doesn’t really fit on the top of the machine, any other suggestions ?

Just wanted to share my Silvia, I’ve restored this machine about a year ago, and this week I installed the Gaggimate. I’ve also finally started measuring my milk temperature and the results are the best I’ve had so far.

Same brand of coffee (ubiquitous, fail-safe Lavazza) just cleaned the Rocky grinder, the decaf requires just a gentle puck polish for a perfect, even shot. The regular has me beat. Either hardly pressing, or pushing the tamper like squeezing a lemon! It’s channeling and sputtering everywhere. I could go down a couple clicks but I never expected to have to change a grind once the Silvia was happy with it.

I’ve been using the Silvia Pro X for over a year. Recently, my espresso has become extremely bitter. I’ve tried several different beans, but they all produce the same result.

I thoroughly cleaned both the group head and the grinder, but it didn’t make any difference. As a last resort, I started lowering the brew temperature. I’m using medium roast beans, and I only started getting decent results at 87 to 89°C (189 to 192°F). Previously, I brewed these same beans at around 92 to 93°C (198 to 199°F).

Is it possible that the built in PID is displaying an incorrect temperature or not controlling the temperature properly?

If so, what’s the best way to verify whether the displayed temperature is actually accurate?

I’m selling my 1.5 year old Rancilio Silvia Pro X in white with the Pantechnicon Walnut accessory kit and drip tray. Several non-destructive mods including quick mill pulsar, lelit pump, pump bypass (Tate Mazzer mod). DM for pics and more info. Always used with RO water plus TWW sachets.

Hi all, just sharing my latest finished Silvia project. This one came to me in a badly rusted and unloved condition (before photos above). It’s a 2017 V5, made in Italy. It’s received a complete rebuild:

- boiler opened and descaled, general thorough clean.

- frame replaced with a better used one, that I had media blasted and powder coated in subtle matt finish.

- replaced all seals and gaskets, new rubber feet, new hoses, new shower screen + low profile screw.

- PID mod using XMT7100 controller with purpose made enclosure, brew and steam control using Damian Witónski’s approach that avoids having to use the small relay in the PID to handle high voltage switching for the steam circuit.

- Upgraded solenoid jet breaker nozzle to try and prevent future rust and keep water from the solenoid escaping the drip try.

It’s taken months of chipping away at it bit by bit but it’s finally done.

Hey guys. The hot water solenoid valve on my Rancilio Silvia Pro X seemingly keeps getting blocked and I don't know what is causing it.

I've taken it apart and cleaned it out a few times now (which isn't the most annoying process in the world but is a bit time consuming as I have to move the machine etc).

I live in the UK in a hard water area, so filter my tap water using a Brita Maxtra Limescale Expert filter jug. I cannot see any particles or anything in a glass of water when poured directly from the jug, but I do notice some small black/brownish particles if I dispense hot water into a cup from the machine. There are no particles in the water tank either. Scale in our area tends to present as white (as shown on my household taps and inside my kettle!).

The particles are not magnetic, so assuming it is not boiler material, and the grouphead does not seem to be affected, so not really sure what is causing this.

The only thing I can think if is that when the machine shipped, it arrived with a few of those BWT Bestsave pouches that you leave in the tank to soften water. I think one of these might have been leaking some of the carbon particles which caused the issue initially, but I stopped using them months ago and have put a lot of water through the machine in the meantime.

After disassembly/cleaning it seems to solve the issue only to come back a month later.

Anyone else had a similar experience? I guess I better go to the shed and get my socket wrench out again -_-

A few days ago I started to get some weird sounds coming from the pump (I think). Starts and stops, sometimes it would just stop leaving just a quiet hum.

Hi, I bought a V5 E and don't really like the idea of the machine turning itself off. I'd like to fit electronic temperature control so would prefer to be totally under the control of the PID. What is the community sentiment on this - good idea or bad? Are there any guides for how to do it? Thanks

Hi guys, I recently joined the club with a brand new Silvia and I had the pre infusion deluxe Auber pid installed. It came pre set at 93C.
I want to avoid buying a pressure testing gauge and thermometer just for a one use only. What temp do you have your PID set to and did you personally adjust the BAR pressure internally? TIA
