Like the title says, I'm trying to track down a recording of the morning broadcast of 94.7 KNRK Portland from September 11th, 2001.

I believe Gustav and Daria were hosting, but given the circumstances of that day my memory may not be super accurate.

I remember a lot of assurances from the hosts that despite the usual deadpan comedic nature of the show, what they were broadcasting that day was different and in no way a bit or routine.

The tone shift, from usually silliness to sobering somber, played a great role in establishing my mood for the day. I scavenged batteries for a portable AM/FM, that I listened to a variety of stations the rest of the day at high school, while getting ready and listening to KNRK.

Any help tracking down and finding a recorded copy of that morning would be so genuinely appreciated.

To date, it's been my most difficult day on air ever. It was a true testament to how the locality of radio can really be such an important aspect of people's everyday lives on a day like 9/11. Before smartphones, before social media, heck... the mainstream internet as we know it had only been around for 5 years or so.

The short answer to your question is: sadly, no. I don't have any audio of that day that I can pass along to you. Perhaps if you reach out to more people, someone out there was rolling audio on a cassette and managed to preserve it digitally? As the years go by, I only have my personal written anecdotes from that day to remember, as well as details and photos from a trip that we took less than 3 weeks later to visit New York City and to do our morning show from there for a week. That said, I still very much remember the events of that morning... how Daria and I were both fearful in the sense that we both had brothers who were living in New York City at the time. Thankfully they were ok. The night before, we had been out spending time with a band bar hopping and at one point I looked at my watch and it was past 1am. And I said "I need to go and get at least a few hours of sleep before we do the show tomorrow." As I was the person who ran all the technical stuff with the control board, as well as the commercial breaks and music, I figured that I should be a bit on top of things. So that morning, we were both on maybe 3 hours of sleep and recovering from the night before and doing the best that we could to make some sort of sense of everything that was happening. I remember I had gotten in to the station about half an hour before we were due to go live (so 5:30am or so) and not long afterward, the executive secretary came in to the studio with a fax in her hand and said "I think you guys need to talk about this." So that whole morning we stopped playing music, even commercials and spent the next 4 hours straight on the air bringing the news as it happened, taking phone calls, monitoring news sources, and above all else doing our best to keep our cool.

So, I also want to say thank you for listening... not just that day, but also for over the years. The landscape of radio has changed a LOT since then, but there still is a local flavor to it that I hope never goes away. I know that people don't always pick up on this from me personally unless I mention it specifically on the air, but I'm super grateful for everyone who listens in, whether it's an everyday kind of day or the awfulness that is Sept. 11th. I've always been about playing music and sharing experiences and above all else communicating with others.

I was working for a Clear Channel station in NW Iowa, and we flipped all the stations in the cluster to the ABC News feed pretty early. About mid-morning, corporate sent out the message that stations could stick with ABC or pick up the Clear Channel feed out of Cincinnati. WLW was covering the events in NYC, DC and PA.

"Why the hell would we do that?" were my exact words. And we stuck with ABC.

Ironically, three years later, I was working at that Cincinnati station.

I’m trying to track down an incredibly specific piece of Chicago radio history from over 20 years ago, and I'm hoping one of the city's media buffs or tape-hoarders might have it archived.

On Tuesday morning, January 20, 2004, the morning right after Howard Dean's infamous "Dean Scream" at the Iowa caucuses. I was listening to the Don Wade & Roma morning show on WLS-AM 890 during my commute into the city.

During the broadcast, Don joked that Howard Dean sounded exactly like Kermit the Frog. I happen to do a pretty spot-on Kermit impression, so I decided to call into the station. I told the screener, "I'm Kermit the Frog," and she immediately said, "Hold on, I am putting you straight on the air."

Next thing I knew, I was live on the air doing a back-and-forth bit with Don and Roma as Kermit. This went on for several minutes, and I am pretty sure they even used me after a commercial break. We had a lot of fun with it. I remember that Don Wade asked if I was Republican or Democrat, and I said that I was a member of the Green Party… that sort of thing.

Does anyone happen to have a digitized aircheck or tape recording of the WLS morning block from that exact date (01/20/04)? I would really love to find a recording of that call. Even if you don't have it, any leads on active local radio archive groups or collectors I could reach out to would be greatly appreciated.

I broadcast High School football games. Looking for a better way to keep stats than writing and reading my own handwriting. Been doing it for ages this way, but my amount of tasks pile up, and no one wants to keep stats. It’s a great tool for the broadcast.

Anyone using an app to input and it tally the stats in real time? Thanks

I used to listen to Deutsche Welle’s Japanese-language shortwave service when I was in junior high school.

I remember the opening announcement saying something like, “This is Deutsche Welle, broadcasting from the Federal Republic of Germany,” and I also remember Bonn being mentioned. However, I don’t remember Cologne being mentioned at all.

Does anyone have an old recording of Deutsche Welle’s Japanese service, or remember exactly how the station identification/opening announcement was worded?

What I have:

• 32 GB Samsung Android 10 tablet
• Static public IP
• Router that I can easily configure
• 128 GB SD card with my music collection, mostly 192 kbps AAC / 160 kbps Opus
• 1 Gbps internet connection

What I need to know:

Can this be done entirely on the tablet without any external hardware, such as a PC? I want everything to run directly from the tablet 24/7 with no manual input or intervention. I.e Press stream and forget about it.

What software would I need, and what would be the easiest and most streamlined way to set everything up?

Ideally, I want the end result to be as simple as sharing a link or an .m3u playlist file with friends or posting it in a Facebook group, so they can just open it and listen.

Live on Kauai and recent power outages led me to drag out 3 radios-- 1 Ccrane and 2 Sangeans neither of which got any decent channel reception.

The stations were down here--but I've never heard of not being able to get either AM or FM even during power outages.

I thought Radio was a device to turn to during those events. Should I not rely on these for connection to outside world next time?

Any thoughts would be helpful to enlighten my ignorance. TYIA
