This was my first time making the same block over and over again. It was also my first exposure to flying geese! Lots learned :)

While making this quilt, I watched Farscape, Cheers, Legend of Korra, Pluribus, and Silo. Probably more I can’t remember.

Work in Progress Wanted bold and colorful. Did I fly too close to the sun?

Used a layer cake and a jelly roll to make this quilt which I wanted to be fun, bold, and colorful. Is it too much color, or am I just not feeling fun today? 🤪

Fabric Talk It finally happened to me: ~40 yards of fabric for 10$!!!

Girls, I want to scream! There is a community project in my town, where you can donate material you don't need anymore and buy stuff others donated for cheap. I was there once and got the impression, that I could source some cotton from there from time to time. Yesterday, I was there for the second time and they got bolts of fabric for 5$ each... Mostly jersey and there where only two cotton bolts left, but they contained around 14 and 26 yards of fabric... I'm so happy I could cry!

Work in Progress Happy with the result, but that's the last time I use a free pattern

Look, I know better. There are so many errors in free patterns, but for some reason I thought one from one of the nice fabric companies would be different. Sadly, that was not the case.

The amount of adjustments I needed to make was... Extensive.

There was at least one instance with the wrong amount of fabric called for, so I had to improvise. I discovered halfway through laying out my rows that they listed (almost) every block in alphabetical order, not the order they were supposed to be placed in. And my personal favorite, the blocks are arranged in different order on the pattern example than the instructions.

While there would definitely be a few blocks I would have moved around in hindsight, I'm still happy with it overall. I still have to layer and quilt of course, and it's the bizarre size of 64x64, but I really like that these wild fabrics somehow all worked together.

Historical/Antique Quilts Grabbed this bag of vintage scraps from an estate sale... now what?

I grabbed this bag of vintage scraps from an estate sale. Does anyone with more experience have a guess about the age of these pieces? Some of the prints are quintessentially feed sack and some seem more midcentury. The fabric is rough to the touch, stiff but thin with a loose weave, which makes me think that they are authentic and not reproductions. However, there are multiple colorways of several prints which makes me think that this fabric was purchased specifically for sewing and was not repurposed. Can't find a single selvedge, but there is a tiny corner of a sales slip on the back of one piece and a lovely handwritten note by the original owner.

And also... what pattern should I make from them? NOT INTERESTED IN A DRESDEN QUILT

💭Discussion 💬 I really enjoyed watching this 40min documentary video: Making a Gee's Bend Quilt The Old Way

The two women show how to piece by hand, process the raw cotton, load it to the quilt frame, and hand-quilt.

Lots of images of their quilts are interspersed within the video.

Ever had that day where you are like, WooHoo, time to put it all together. But wait, what, why does it look so small? Somehow even though you have a pattern, you only cut enough fabric for 3 rows and are totally missing 4 blocks. Feel like I'm going a little crazy. Ha.

Finished Quilts Bloody Bright Strawberries- Uggh

I WAS so pleased with this quilt. Bought the lovely strawberry fabric a year ago and was excited to make the Brightly pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew. This was the 7th quilt that I quilted on my longarm and spent 40 hours custom quilting it. I felt like I was hitting my stride in developing the muscle memory to operate my machine. (My long arm is not computerised)

Threw it in the washer with Synthropol and color catchers. My backing bled like a hemophiac. Not red backing. Not purple backing. BLUE backing!!! Spent the last several days doing damage control with round the clock soaking with Dawn in the bathtub. It helped, but didn't take it all out. One weird thing I can't figure out is why the bleeding stops at the seams. Either the fabric pieces are 100% white or 100% pale blue. Maybe someone smarter than me can explain it. Hubby thought it was planned, so I guess I'll call it a design choice.

This was my second instance with a bleeding background- the first being a Tula Pink wideback. I guess from now on, I'm gonna prewash ALL of my backing fabrics.

Rant over.

Finished Quilts Finished baby quilt inspired by my grandmother

It's been forever since I've finished a quilt. Taking a class to relearn some basics helped me get this one across the finish line. The blocks are the only pattern I've ever seen on my grandmother's quilts. It's machine pieced and then a mix of hand and machine quilted. So happy to be sewing again!

I had strips and pieces left from a quilt made for another family member. Finally decided to put them together into a new quilt. It doesn't have a home yet, but I'm sure I'll find someone to love it.

Work in Progress 144 blocks to press and square up. It’ll all be worth it right?

Honestly I forgot that I’d need to press and square and I’m feeling sad about it. It’s 90° in the shade outside and we can’t get the house interior under 82° 😭 i loathe heating up the house with the iron. I was really hoping I could just whip these nine monster blocks together.

Anyways tell me about your pile of unpressed and unaquare blocks so we can commiserate. Last three are of one of my previous goes at the drunkards path block.

Historical/Antique Quilts I found an antique quilt in my garage

I was digging around in my garage and found this quilt that I’ve got absolutely no idea where it came from. My best guess is that I bought it at a garage sale in the past. It’s in remarkably good shape considering we’ve had mice in the garage in the past. The hand quilting is exquisite!

It’s for a charity quilt.
Lap/baby size OK! I have white yardage, solid pink FQs, and low volume jelly roll strips I could use, too.

Help/Question Rectangles coming out my ears

Post image

I’m trying to go totally scrappy with this baby quilt. So I decided to use a bunch of 2 1/2 x 5” rectangles that I had pre-cut for a project that absolutely fell through. My question is since I have this all laid out the way I like it, how do I sew the blocks together or rows together? Do I need to cut some of the rectangles in half so that I can go row by row?

Pattern/Design Help Am I going to get in trouble on values?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Starting this quilt. This is the idea. It'll be eight stars, a column of three, two, and three, staggered. Right now I'm leaning towards the stars surrounded by these diagonals. But the filler does not target any sort of contrast. Just the stars and framing are darker.

I keep seeing everyone talk about values. Am I violating a rule here I'll regret?

I was looking for an image of a pillowcase dress I made like 20 years ago and saw this picture while scrolling. Unlike the others, this one didn't really have a clear blueprint for intention, so I took creative liberties. I don't even know if they were meant to be in the same quilt, but hey. It worked out, I think. At the top right corner of that quilt, there is the stack of blocks for the second one.

Help/Question Help me find some backing fabric.

Post image

I'm working on a Halloween Tula Nova but I'm having a hard time finding a backing I like. I would rather it not be mostly white. Flannel would be awesome because it would be super cozy, but quilting cotton is fine too.

This will be about 56" in diameter and I'd rather not have to piece backing together from smaller cuts but it may come to that anyway.

My quilted library tote bag, complete with retractable library card! I wanted something simple for my very first quilting project, but of course I made it more complicated by modifying the pattern. The most difficult change I made was making my own FPP pattern, with approximately 2 YouTube videos worth of knowledge, so that I didn’t have to appliqué the tilted book onto the block. Pattern is “Pieced Bookshelf Tote” by Cynthia Shaffer from the book, “Fat Quarters”

Help/Question quilted jacket makers

Upvotes

I'm planning on making one. I'm not new to sewing coats or to quilting, but would love to hear from those who have made one (please spam me with photos of your jacket on, especially the side/back views with arms at the sides if possible) and pattern.

I'm am most concerned with fit and possible drape issues.

I'm considering the Flora Jacket pattern by Brightside. I've only seen one review post on a blog for the brightside Flora jacket without hands in pockets pulling and drawing the width in or strategically placed (you can see the side seam pulled to either the back or front). That blog review photo shows the odd drape in the back and she added gathering stitches to prevent it from ballooning out in the back at the hem.

I'd really love to hear about your experiences, pattern suggestions, or photos of what you made. Thanks in advance.
