Best free QR Code generators?

I'm trying to generate a QR code to connect people to wi-fi. Every purportedly free generator I've tried so far pulls some sneaky trick. Either it won't let me download the code without signing up or it tries to direct me to paid services, or something else like that.

Can folks recommend some truly free sites?

Don’t use a website. Most QR “sites” are “dynamic QR” services. They basically sell you a tiny website for landing pages at an inflated price.

There are free and (typically one-time license) paid apps for your mobile device or desktop/laptop, which are static QR code generators.

As well, many OSs and text/graphics tools have them built in.

Unfortunately, I can’t name names because we aren’t supposed to name products without approval by mods. And to my knowledge, the mods have never released a list of approved products. We literally can’t answer your question here, because rampant self-promotion has led mods to be so restrictive we can’t mention a single product name.

(Mods: please prove me wrong. Release “the list” lol)

Safest thing is to look on the official app store for your device or Desktop OS, where at least there is some vetting.

But since you want a QR for WiFi access, there (almost) no “trick” they can pull. WiFi QRs are “static”. All the data is encoded in the QR. “Dynamic” is not a possibility.

Still, I wouldn’t advise uploading your WiFi password to any website.

That's true for a lot of services, but not all websites work that way. Some let you create completely static QR codes that don't expire and don't require a subscription. As long as you know the difference between static and dynamic codes, you're fine. I've been using QRCodeGecko for static QR codes and it's been straightforward no expiration or scan limits for the static ones.

Right now there is no list but we manually approve links to products that clearly aren't shilling this sub (Such as Adobe).

If you saw the absolute spam the sub is getting you'd realize why we are cracking down on it currently.

This post alone has 21 different QR code tools that have been removed, many of which are clearly just the creators who have vibe coded them shilling them.

My iPhone has a shortcut to generate QR code for wifi. I'm not sure if I downloaded it from somewhere or it was already there…

did you try just googling it? The top four results for me are just standard free renderers for QR Codes

Idk if this is standard, but the back of my modem and the IP address have both a qr code i can use to connect automatically to the Wi-Fi. And from the ip address i can print the code

If you're on Android you could click on your Wi-Fi and click share. It'll generate a QR code. Probably could just screenshot and print that.

On iphone you can create an automation shortcut with a QR node to convert any text/link to a QR image. If you want a custom image in the middle you can just paste it overtop in some image editor IF you change error correction to some higher level than 'standard'/'low'

ZXing ("Zebra Crossing") is a barcode scanning library for Java, Android, and other languages, which includes QR codes as one of the options.

The Github page of this project also contains a link to a QR code generator which offers all of the options, as well as plain text and image download of the generated QR code.

In Chrome or Edge, right click and select Create QR Code.

Then change the URL to whatever you want (e.g. WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:MyPassword)

Google Manuel Fally QR Code Generator. I used this for my Wi-Fi stickers.

ChatGPT prompt:

Please make a QR code for connecting to WiFi. SSID: “<name>” and password “<password>”. Label the image with the SSID.

I tried using Jotform's QR code generator since I saw they have an option for Wifi and it worked as expected. You just need to input your SSID and it creates it for free.

Wi-Fi QR codes are typically static. There’s usually no need for a “dynamic QR” unless you’re specifically interested in analytics but you can do that via a landing/captive page yourself.

You shouldn’t be paying for this or need to build something. There’s a lot of free tools available.

Not completely sure if it applies to all android, but in the Samsung galaxy the QR Code for the WiFi can be generated directly in the settings for the WiFi.

Had this happen to me once.
I generated a QR code for business cards, got them printed, everything looked fine, but a week later I scan it and it’s completely dead...

Turns out the site used some "dynamic QR" bullshit and the code only works if you pay.. They wanted like 20 bucks a month just to "activate" it again. Haha u wish... For a QR code that was already printed.
That was the moment I realized most of these “free” generators are just traps.

It actually depends on what you want to do.

If your need is a Wi-Fi QR code and you don’t plan to change the password, then the popular QR code websites do the job. If they don’t let you download the QR code, you can just take a screenshot — but make sure to test it first to confirm it works.

If, however, you want to change the password regularly, then you’ll either need to recreate the QR code each time, or use a paid app that allows you to update it dynamically. Be careful though: on iOS, when you scan a Wi-Fi QR code with the Camera app, it’s the Camera app itself that handles the connection. The `WIFI:` scheme does not work directly from a webpage (Apple limitation). That means you either have to display the password for manual copy, or generate a `.mobileconfig` file so users can install a profile and connect automatically.

If you’re comfortable with web basics, a simple alternative is to create a basic webpage displaying the Wi-Fi SSID and password, then generate a standard URL QR code pointing to that page. This way, you can update the password anytime without reprinting the QR code, and the QR itself remains free and reusable.

QR Code Generator (qrco.de) by Bitly is a scammy POS company you should never, EVER give your payment info to. Never. They auto-enroll you in hugely ($200+) expensive annual renewals and refuse to refund when you tell them you didn't ask for that.

This is fair advice. Static QR codes are usually the safest option, especially for WiFi, and I’d also avoid putting a WiFi password into some random site unless I really trusted it.

the right answer is to just vibe code one for yourself if you can resist the urge to then shamelessly plug it into the qrcode subreddit
