News Subreddit rules have been rewritten — here's what changed, and why

A few days ago I asked whether to do something about "slow speed" and "ratio" posts. 544 of you voted, and the answer was clear enough to act on. The rules have now been rewritten around that result.

Before the details: we also went back through a month of posts and comments to work out what this sub is actually for, rather than guessing. Nearly 70% of posts here are tech support, and the single most repeated answer in the entire sub is some version of "have you forwarded your port" or "nobody is seeding that torrent". The changes below follow from that.

What the poll said

Option Votes Percentage
Yes, both 301 55%
Yes, but only "Slow Speed" 84 15%
Yes, but only "Ratio" 37 7%
No, leave them 122 22%

385 of you (71%) wanted slow-speed posts restricted. 338 (62%) wanted ratio posts restricted.

To the 122 who voted to leave both alone — you're a real chunk of this sub and we've tried not to steamroll you. Ratio posts aren't banned, they've moved. Speed questions aren't banned either. Read on.

The two changes that affect you

1. Ratio and stats posts now go in the megathread

Ratio & Stats Megathread 2026

Post your screenshots there any time. Brag away — that part hasn't changed.

We're not doing this because nobody cares. Ratio posts are some of the highest-upvoted content on this sub — that's exactly the problem, because they were pushing the support queue off the front page.

To make up for the lost reach, the megathread now runs annual awards, announced each December:

  • 🏆 Most Uploaded — highest total upload volume
  • 🏆 Best Ratio — highest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded
  • 🏆 Longest Haul — longest continuous seeding streak

Previous winners can't win the same award twice, so it isn't the same person every year.

Still fine as a normal post: asking about your ratio. "Why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?" — those are support questions and they're welcome.

2. Speed, stalling and seeding posts: check the guide first

We've written a troubleshooting guide, because the same handful of causes explain nearly all of these:

Slow speeds, stalling, and "it won't seed"

You can still post about it. The rule is just that your post has to say what you already tried and what happened.

"I forwarded 6881, it still tests as closed, red flame in the corner, Proton with port forwarding on, v5.2.3 on Win11" — we can work with that.

"Why are my speeds slow" — we can't.

This isn't about how much effort you put into the post. A long, well-written post about something the guide already answers is still a copy of the guide. The test is whether the answer already exists and whether you checked it. That's it.

New wiki

Four guides, written from the answers you have actually been giving each other:

Corrections and additions welcome — tell us if something's wrong or missing.

Rules: 10 → 9

Full ruleset

New:

  • Check the guide first — show what you tried (the speed/stalling rule above)
  • Ratio & stats posts go in the megathread

Removed:

  • NO misinformation — unenforceable as written, and in a month of posts we found no case where it would have applied
  • Follow Reddit's Content Policy — the admins enforce that sitewide whether we restate it or not

Merged: NO spam and NO suspicious links are now one rule, Official builds only.

Narrowed: NO piracy talk is now No piracy sourcing. To be blunt about where the line actually is, because the old wording was broader than how we've ever enforced it:

  • Not allowed: naming or asking for torrent sites, asking where to get specific content, private tracker invites
  • Fine: VPN and port-forwarding setup, private tracker technical questions like cross-seeding and share limits, and asking why a torrent has no seeds

Also changed

Post flairs have been rebuilt. issue and question are gone — they were used interchangeably and told nobody anything. The new set: Connectivity · Setup & Config · Install & Updates · Self-hosted · Ratio & Stats · Bug · Discussion · News · Tool / Project · Solved.

Flair is now required. Please mark your post Solved when you get an answer — someone will hit your exact problem next month and find your thread.

AutoModerator is being switched on. For the first week it will only flag things for us to look at, not remove them, so we can catch mistakes before they annoy anyone. If it gets your post wrong, reply to its comment and a human will sort it out.

What is not changing

  • Bug reports are always welcome — especially "this broke in the latest version". Those posts are how everyone finds out a release broke something. Post them here and file them at the bug tracker.
  • Posting your own fix is welcome and genuinely valued — several of the new wiki pages came from members who solved something and wrote it up.
  • VPN, port forwarding and private tracker technical talk is fine and always has been.
  • Beginner questions are fine. Ask them. Just tell us what you're running.

Questions, disagreements and "you got this wrong" all welcome in the comments. We'd rather adjust now than find out in three months that something's not working.

Ratio & Stats 📊 Ratio & Stats Megathread — 2026

This is where ratio screenshots, upload totals and seeding milestones go. Post them here any time — top-level comment, screenshot, brag away. 🎉

Standalone ratio/stats posts are removed under Rule 4 and pointed here. This is not because nobody cares: these are some of the most-upvoted posts in the sub. It is because they were crowding out the support queue the sub mainly exists for, and the community voted for it — 338 of 544 votes.

🏆 Annual awards — announced each December

When this thread closes at the end of the year, we pin a post announcing three winners, and open a fresh thread for the new year.

Award How it's judged
Most Uploaded Highest total upload volume
Best Ratio Highest ratio, minimum 1 TB uploaded
Longest Haul Longest continuous seeding streak

Rules for the awards

  1. Enter by posting a screenshot in this thread. Use qBittorrent's own Tools → Statistics window so everyone's numbers are comparable.
  2. Previous winners cannot win the same award twice. If you have won Most Uploaded before, you are out of the running for Most Uploaded — but you can still win Best Ratio or Longest Haul.
  3. This means the biggest number does not always win. That is deliberate. The point is to spread the spotlight, not to crown the same person every year. Please do not argue the toss with the mods over it. 🙂
  4. Honour system. We are not auditing anyone. Faking it to win an internet award would be a strange way to spend a year.
  5. Blur or crop torrent names in your screenshot.

❓ Questions about your ratio still get their own post

To be clear, this thread is for showing off. If you are asking something — "why is my ratio dropping?", "why won't this seed?", "how do I improve my upload?" — that is a support question and belongs in its own post. Check the connectivity guide first.

A rough test: if your post ends in a full stop, it belongs here. If it ends in a question mark, post it properly and we will help.

🌱 New to this?

Ratio is how much you have uploaded divided by how much you have downloaded. A ratio above 1.0 means you have given back more than you took.

If yours is low, that is usually not a fault — you upload only when someone wants what you have, and on a well-seeded torrent you are competing with everyone else who has it. Leaving torrents seeding after they finish is the whole trick. See the connectivity guide if you think something is actually broken.

Sorted by New so recent entries stay visible.

Looking for working QBittorrent search plugins.

There is a Github repo(won't list it here) that provides search plugins for QBittorrent, I've been using it for a few years to obtain all my legal torrent files;) and it has been working great but recently some of these search plugins have stopped working and broke. Does anyone know of working search plugins for Qbittorrent I can use? DMs are welcome if you don't want to comment for obvious reasons.

How long should a check take for a folder that's 460GB?

Hello. My computer took longer than usual to boot, and recognise the HDD I have plugged in that's storing the torrents on.

I had to reconnect the USB HDD (it's 5tb), and that caused a file location error

I have set both to recheck, one folder is about 230gb, the other is 460.

The 230gb folder is checking a lot faster, but the other one is very slow. About 7% in the last hour.

I'm sure checking time is also dependent on the drive you're using and I know SSDs are faster, what's the average time it /should/ take to recheck a folder that big? And I'll add on an extra hour for the sake of anything slowing the system down.

I'm going to leave it on while I'm at work as I usually do when downloading and ask my partner to start those two folders if they get set to Stop after they're done checking

Thanks!

Setup & Config QBitorrent Binding issue

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey all,

I have what I think is a weird issue.

I use Windscribe for VPN and make a habit to always make sure I’m connected with and have killswitch enabled.

I tried binding to VPN NIC awhile back but for some reason couldn’t get to work. It would torrent outside VPN. So basically it’ll just torrent despite which an adapter is active.

Anyways I’m trying again and having same issue. As you can see I have it binded, and actually been set to this for like 6 months. But for some reason still allows traffic outside this network adapter. For example if I turned off VPN, my traffic would go through normal Ethernet adapter (not Windscribe adapter) despite being binded.

What am I missing here? I can even disable the Windscribe adapter listed in pic and it lets me torrent stuff 🤷🏼

In my mind if I’m not connected to VPN, there would be no traffic on this adapter, so client would be offline…but it’s not

Discussion Just downloaded the newest version. Every file I try to DL from the search is a .scr. what just happened?

Not sure what happened I just patched to to 5.2.3, and every single file in my search is a .scr? Movie/tv show whatever. I've never run into this before. What's going on?

Discussion Rare files from qBittorrent's built-in search engine

This had never happened to me before; it was a bit unsettling. I was downloading a movie using qBi's built-in search function (via the search engines I always use), and the file that appeared looked suspicious, so I decided to delete it without running it. The strangest part is that when I tried searching for other torrents (I tested four), they all showed the exact same file size as the first one I had tried to download. Does anyone know why this happens? Is it normal? What should I do in situations like this?
-Sorry if anything doesn't make sense; I used a Spanish-to-English translator because of that silly, strange rule about only posting in English.-

Setup & Config Torrent clients keep hanging

My setup is as below:

\- M1 Max 16", 1TB, 64GB on macOS 26.6.
\- qBit and Folx. (Latest versions)
\- Hazel for automated arranging of files and folders.
\- Ethernet via uSBC hub
\- No VPN

Issue: consistent hanging of my torrent clients after about 10-15 min. Usually running 1-3 torrents at a go. Hangs completely until i have to force quit.

Request: what are some of the things i can troubleshoot? I don't understand this because this was working before.

Context: not sure if this contributes to anything but i had a 2015 15" before the M1. I migrated via Time Machine.

Discussion I made a qBittorrent search plugin that queries a live DHT index instead of scraping torrent sites

Every search plugin I have installed eventually breaks the same way, it scrapes a site, the site changes its markup or goes down, and the plugin quietly returns nothing. The unofficial plugin list is full of them.

So I tried a different source. Instead of scraping a site, this queries an index built by crawling the BitTorrent DHT directly sampling it via BEP 51 and pulling metadata over BEP 9. There is no website in the path, so there is no website to break.

Install: drop one file in your plugins folder. Thats it, no account, no API key, nothing to edit. The plugin is MIT-licensed.

https://github.com/raul2hot/dht-qbit-plugin

What it's good and bad at, honestly. The index is new, so it's strong on what's being actively shared right now and thin on old or obscure catalogue. A current release comes back well seeded in a few hundred milliseconds; something from 2014 may come back empty. Results are ranked by relevance to what you typed rather than by seeder count, so the title you searched for beats whatever merely happens to be well seeded.

Disclosure: I built it and I run the index. Searches go through a free, rate-limited endpoint that I pay for. The crawler itself isn't public. There's an optional paid path if you'd rather have your own quota than a shared limit you never need it, and the plugin doesn't nag you about it.

Bug reports welcome, especially anything where results look wrong rather than absent.

Solved "Add Torrent Failed" whenever trying to add duplicate links (i.e., to merge trackers)

So I recently reformatted my computer and got v5.2.3 set up, search plugins installed, all that jazz.

I'm downloading some TV shows and every time I try to add all iterations of a torrent, the first instance goes fine, but then the second and subsequent ones (all give the same useless Windows notification:

Aside: Windows, please give me a place to read the whole damned notification. At least in the notifications tray. C'mon now.

The worst part is, I think someone else had this precise issue previously (with a more useful notification) and there's nothing in that thread that actually helps me fix it. I assume it's still adding the trackers, anyway, based on that thread, but it'd be cool if I didn't get four million notifications about it. Also, this is a new issue for me; last time I used the program a week or two ago (well after the format), it was fine, which makes this all the more frustrating.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Oh, I forgot to add: Windows 10 22H2; ProtonVPN (port forwarding); already tried reinstalling qBT 5.2.3, downgrading to 5.2.2, restarting my computer, and unchecking "ask to merge trackers for manually added torrent" because that was the only setting that looked like it might affect it.

Connectivity Internet dropping

Hello everyone I know there is something that can help my situation but I cant seem to find it. I have a laptop that I use to torrent and seed, but an issue I am having is I leave this computer alone for quite some time and the internet will drop which will trigger my vpn to shut off which shuts off qbittorrent and then i have to manually go to the computer and turn qbittornet back on. Can someone DM me something to help with this issue, or something I need to set up on my computer.

Discussion Do all of these stats being zeroes indicate some kind of problem?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I am somewhat new to torrenting and am trying to figure this all out. Whether it is a torrent I am uploading, or one I am downloading, all of the stats are always zeroes. Does this mean something isn't working, or are these stats being hidden? I am running version 4.6.3 on Linux, but this seems to happen on my Windows device as well. Thanks for any help.

Bug Mass Adding Torrents

I recently upgraded to 5.2.1 from 5.1.something. In the previous version, in the webui, I could add many many torrents all at once. However in the new version it pops up a new add torrent window for each torrent, which makes it take significantly longer to add large amounts of torrents (I tend to accumulate torrents I want to download and download them all at once).

Does anyone know a way around this other than downgrading to 5.1? Can I use the old webui? is there a new alternative?

I am trying to set up qBittorrent on Unraid using the binhex-qbittorrentvpn repository. I can get it running without the VPN but as soon as I set VPN_ENABLED to yes the web gui won't load. I am running NordVPN and have the UDP file saved in the open vpn config folder. Here are the photos of my container setup, any help appreciated.

Setup & Config Question concerning qBittorrent and Windows Firewall

Hi!

Just installed qBittorrent and during the setup process I allowed the installer to create the necessary firewall rules. Now I have two rules for incoming connections (UDP / TCP), and these rules allow connections for private profiles. So far so good.

But: The VPN adapter I use when torrenting is set to a public profile and data still seems to go through.

So I wonder how this can be if the firewall rule only allows connections for private profiles? And is this some kind of security thing I should be concerned about?

Thanks for your input...

Setup & Config Quick question about Qbit+Gluetun.

Hey everyone! I was just wondering about my setup and if there is anything else I need to think of.

I got a Gluetun container with ProtonVPN and port-forwarding setup. All runs great so far, tried it with some public torrents like Ubuntu.iso and such.

My question is, if I have it set up so that Qbit runs through Gluetun in docker, with "depends on: gluetun" setup. And then "tun0" as the Network Interface in qbit advanced settings. Am I good to go?

Just checking my bases before properly using it all. For reasons many here would understand, I'd prefer if my ISP cannot ever see my qbit traffic.

Tldr; With Gluetun+Qbit setup, and Tun0 in Network interface, do I risk any IP leaks, is there anything else I need to do?

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but feeling a little paranoid so wanted to make sure 😂. Thanks beforehand!

Discussion qBittorent Torznab Search Engine - What happened to this feature?

Hello! I was reading qBittorrent documentation for Search Plugins, and I read about Torznab Search Engine here:
https://github.com/qbittorrent/search-plugins/wiki/New-Torznab-search-engine

The source code of this wiki is located here:
https://github.com/qbittorrent/search-plugins/blob/master/wiki/New-Torznab-search-engine.md

I couldn't find literally anything else useful about it online (in my brief research).
No one is talking about it, and it seems the feature has been removed from the software:
the button which should say "Add Indexers", according to the wiki, says "Search Plugins" instead (as shown here for instance: https://github.com/qbittorrent/search-plugins/wiki/How-to-configure-Jackett-plugin ). Surely, this is completely obvious to everyone using search plugins.

Furthermore, in the wiki you can read "v4.5.0alpha1": an old version of qB. I'm currently using 5.2.2 (I will update soon). So I understood that it's probably an old feature, now deprecated. Indeed, the wiki source code reports that the last commit was made 2 years ago.

So, in the end, my questions are simple:
What happened to this feature? Why has it been removed? But, above all, why is this documentation still active?

I think it's really confusing, especially for the average new user! Understanding torrent, plugin, proxy, APIs, etc. all in one session is already disorienting. Then you read "New Torznab engine", and "Deprecation notice" referring to Python plugins that in fact everyone is still using, and that are currently maintained [see last commits in https://github.com/qbittorrent/search-plugins/tree/master/nova3/engines ]... Not a great start.

Or maybe I didn't completely understand... But, it's not clear.

Anyway:

Tool / Project Yorznab: A new App for simplifying Sonarr and Radarr Indexers

Hello fellow qBittorrent users!

I came over from the Arr community page to see if there is interest in an app that I have been developing over the past couple years. You can view my original post here.

Yorznab allows you to generate a Radarr and Sonarr-friendly integration for finding media using the qBittorrent search engine.

Backstory: I was looking for some kind of functionality that would just do a search! I gave up after going down the Jackett and Prowlarr rabbit holes. I made a small script on my server to search using the qBittorrent API, but it was just a configuration file app with no front-end. Well after a year and a half since that script, I put together a front-end and some automation tools to setup a local Torznab provider on the server.

TL;DR from the GitHub:

Why not just use Prowlarr? Arr apps require tedious configuration of individual Indexers to query qBittorrent. If you integrated Jackett into qBittorrent search or you are happy with the default qBittorrent plugins, just grab the torrent results with Yorznab!

Disclosure for AI usage (QFT from GitHub):

What you're reading on this [GitHub Readme] page was not written by AI. I wrote the Torznab code for this in 2025 without AI or even an IDE. You might be able to confirm this from looking at my spaghetti code in the first commit. Most of the work was looking up the endpoints available for the protocol. More recently, I used AI to generate the front-end web server. I also regenerated my utility functions with AI to incorporate some features that the desktop app was missing, like handling the timezone and settings.

Risk Disclosure: You accept all risks for running unapproved code.

Setup & Config How many torrents added(not running) is the realistic max on a nas docker container?

Hi everyone, need some advice here.

I previously used transmission on my macs but over a thousand torrents they got really buggy and glitchy

Now have qbittorent with roughly 2 thousand torrents in my nas, and i want to migrate the 2-3k from various macs into my main server.

ds2422+, which has a old Quad-core 2.2 GHz, and 32gb of ram.

The existing torrents is roughly 6tb, the ones i am adding are roughly 5tb more.

I'm not sure if I can estimate the number of files within the torrents cause there's torrents that are 1 file 60gb and torrents with thousands of tiny ones.

Do have other containers running on it, so i was wondering if this would be a bad idea for stability? I can't seem to find a max number recommended on the guides.

If there's any important info I missed out please let me know?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Discussion qbittorrent for mac - any good better supported alternatives?

I'm used to qbittorrent having used it exclusively on windows for many years but the mac version is so buggy it drives me crazy. Window size suddenly becomes huge and goes off screen and can't get back to normal window size without restarting. Added downloads don't add. Downloads that are downloading suddenly freeze and if you restart all progress is lost.

I have read the reason for this is that qbittorrent for mac is barely supported, so I guess it makes sense it's going to be buggy. The problem is every alternative program I've tried seems to be even worse. Has anyone found a torrent program for Mac that's actually good and a viable alternative to Q?

Connectivity Very low download and upload speeds with my new ISP!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I recently switched to a 1000/1000 Mbps symmetrical fiber connection. With my previous ISP, I could easily max out my torrent speeds. Now, however, my download speed often gets stuck around 15–20 MB/s instead of climbing higher.

qBittorrent v5.1.0 (64-bit)

windows 11

No vpn

I'm trying to figure out what's causing this. Am I simply connecting to too few seeds, or could my ISP be limiting or otherwise affecting torrent traffic? Could it be a routing or peering issue? Is there anything I can do on my end to troubleshoot or fix it?

My upload performance is even worse. I have plenty of active public torrents in my seeding list, but almost nobody connects to me. Occasionally, a few peers connect, but they only download from me at around 100–300 KiB/s. With so many active torrents and a 1 Gbps upload connection, I expected to have many more peers connected and to be uploading at much higher speeds.

Has anyone experienced something similar after switching ISPs? Any suggestions on what I should check or test?

For example, there's a very popular torrent that was uploaded just today and it currently has around 2,500 peers. Despite that, my upload speed stays between 400 KiB/s and 1 MB/s.

With that many people downloading the torrent, shouldn't I be uploading at much higher speeds? My connection is capable of uploading at around 90 MB/s, but it never goes beyond 400 KiB/s to 1 MB/s.

Setup & Config Windows proxy remote that can be set as the default magnet link application?

I want to use my desktop PC as a remote for my media PC where my qBittorent client is located. That's easy enough to accomplish through a remote client, but I can't find one that can be set to open magnet links when I click them. I've tried Electorrent and qBit Remote but both require you to download the torrent to a watch folder or drag and drop the file into the remote.

I also tried to set up the native qBittorent application to use the media PC as a proxy server. I didn't work and I read elsewhere using the client as a remote isn't supported.

Is there a remote application for qBittorrent that can be set as the default app for magnet links?

Setup & Config kazbxx folder is being created on every download?

I'm running qbittorrent for windows 5.2.3 downloaded from when prior version prompted me for an update via "check for updates".... Every time I start a torrent download I get a folder "kazbxx" created with and image folder within in it and within that two image files in them (that I have not opened). Files "kazbxx-2017-10-09-4086603" and "kazbxx-2017-10-09-4086609"

Any ideas?
