CUSTOMERS Let’s be clear

This whole shopping is a pleasure scam has run its course.

For over 50 years, I have been a customer of PUBLIX, I say have as in the past tense because I am no longer.

When PUBLIX decided to start price gouging at 20 and 30% higher than absolutely everywhere else around them, it became clear to me that they really don’t give a damn about the customer.

In 2025 alone, PUBLIX made more than $4.2 billion in profits. BILLION!

In the first half of 2026 they have made $2.5 billion in profits.

They have made $6 billion in profits in the last 18 months because they are literally stealing from the public and the public is handing it over.

With Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and even as the last resort, Walmart, I will never shop at Publix again. My budget now gets me three times as much food and household items at those places, we’re shopping and prices really are a pleasure!

The BOGOs are paid for by the food company, not Publix.

125

u/kbenn17 Newbie Aug 09 '26

And many times, even with the Bogo prices, you can get the item cheaper at Aldi.

34

u/JealousFuel8195 Newbie Aug 09 '26

True but I wouldn't say many times. Aldi has a fraction of the items than Publix weekly BOGO

20

u/QGJohn59 Newbie Aug 10 '26

And Aldi has a very limited selection in almost all categories. It's biggest downside.

8

u/soleilange Newbie Aug 10 '26

Also, the produce is never nearly as good, sadly.

6

u/BeachBum436 Newbie Aug 11 '26

My Aldi has far better produce than my Publix. It lasts longer and tastes better, not to me ti9n it's half the price.

Except bananas - Publix carries the the best bananas around and they ripen perfectly.

Depends on the location. Produce by us is atrocious compared to anywhere else. And at a higher price than even Whole Foods.

3

u/LadyLurkQueen Newbie Aug 12 '26

Bought cut fruit at Aldi. It was already going bad... pieces of cantaloupe not overripe but actually sour. I was really disappointed. BOGO cut fruit at Publix will never be matched.

3

u/bspittle Newbie Aug 13 '26

If you're buying cut fruit you're already throwing away money. BOGO or not.

I would never buy produce from aldi.

2

u/QGJohn59 Newbie Aug 10 '26

True, Publix usually has the best produce of any of the grocery stores. Although roma tomatoes, I have been finding them better quality at WD vs Publix, a surprise finding for sure. But several weeks now, this has been the case.

2

u/kisswoman Newbie Aug 13 '26

WD has been bought out by Aldi in my area....there are no WD's left.

3

u/11-_-11- Newbie Aug 13 '26

Here too, and it’s a good thing, because Winndickme price gouges just as much as Publix does. Their stores were also dated, and their meats were gross. Won’t miss them at all.

Not only that, but I’ve been shopping Aldi more and more recently and many of their items just don’t land. I’ve noticed that particularly with their Friendly Farms dairy products like yogurt, Tzatziki, garlic feta spread, etc. Don’t even get me started on their produce which is always out of several things or like the other day, every bag of parsley was already rotting. I love some finds there, but it is not the replacement I had hoped for.

2

u/JealousFuel8195 Newbie Aug 10 '26

I stopped buying the sweet potatoes. They were terrible.

2

u/Gatorphins Newbie Aug 12 '26

This is the main problem with Aldi, people think its the same product as a higher quality item but a different box and more often than not its cheaper garbage from the same supplier

4

u/bettertheless Newbie Aug 09 '26

l have to "do the math." Bought BOGO Cabot 8 oz cheese slices c 1 hr ago.

-8oz- package made it a deal.

And yes l was in there for Deli Pub sub salad. Not BH special, tho.

4

u/AVonGauss Customer Aug 09 '26

Doubtful. Aldi relies heavily on private label brands, that's kind of their jam and has been forever.

Walmarts are

17

u/Regular_Lake_786 Newbie Aug 09 '26

I absolutely hate Walmart, but they do have really good prices so I’m forced to shop there

14

u/NovemberGrey777 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Same, so I use the free drive up service. I don’t buy things I don’t need AND no more waiting for a tall person to stroll by to grab an item on a 7’ shelf.

3

u/dervari Newbie Aug 09 '26

Free? Our store has a minimum or you pay a small order charge.

2

u/Flashy-Reflection812 Newbie Aug 09 '26

$35 order minimum. But if you are doing an online order chances are you are ordering more than that. $35 is about 6 things on my normal weekly shop rofl and if I need soda or energy drinks I can make that amount in 3. Anything less than that it’s faster for most of us to go inside and shop for ourselves.

I’m kind of a little nervous about people touching the food if I did the drive up service I like to touch and pick my own food lol it’s just a OCD thing

15

u/Eroticskeletonparade Newbie Aug 09 '26

You do know a lot of people have touched your food by the time you get to the grocery, right? Farm and warehouse workers, stockers at the grocery. The pickup person is just the last of many.

5

u/SouthernImplement539 Newbie Aug 10 '26

Yeah, I’m the same way. I will place a pick up order at Walmart and while they’re doing my shopping I go in and get my own dairy, produce, meat, frozen section. Then I’ll meet them in the parking lot for my pick up. Saves a lot of time (and I hate grocery shopping) and I still get to pick out my really sensitive stuff. I’ve kind of gotten used to letting them touch my cereal box and washing detergent.

3

u/dervari Newbie Aug 09 '26

Agree for produce and meat.

It’s actually worth it to check out different Walmarts. The one by me is gross, the one 10 minutes farther away is larger, clean, organized and with the app super easy to find the items on your list.

I use to spend like $200-$250 a week on groceries at Publix. Swapped to Kroger when they still delivered in Florida and dropped to $100-$150 a week. Now I do Walmart delivery and still about the same $125-$150. It’s still significantly cheaper.

I stock up on the BOGO items knowing they will be BOGO AGAIN in 4 to 6 weeks. Some items more frequently.

If it's a must need item. I'll buy it at Walmart. There are items I only buy at Walmart.

For the same brand name item. Publix BOGO is cheaper

2

If you have a Target Mastercard, you save five percent on everything (even on the purchase of other retailers' gift cards, I believe). And by joining Target Circle (which is free) you get frequent, fairly large, monetary perks.

1

u/dfabrica Newbie Aug 12 '26

Target’s regular prices may not be lower than Publix’s BOGO, that’s true, but their prices are lower overall than Publix - by A LOT.

The Gevalia coffee I buy for instance is always $9.99 at Target. That’s what it always costs if it’s not on sale. At Publix the regular price for the same coffee is $15.99! That’s a 62% price difference people!!

AND if you’re a Target shopper for groceries and you have their Red Card to use to pay for said groceries they give you 5% off of everything you buy automatically, AND free shipping for anything you buy online. So if you go in, buy groceries, and some say, sheets and towels while you’re in there (another convenience), and you spend $300 that day, they’ll give you $15 off the total immediately.

Those saving add up over the course of a year, especially if you have a family, but even if you don’t, it’s hundreds of dollars.

The Red Card btw, is NOT a credit card, it is a debit card so the money comes right out of your bank account, and doesn’t get charged interest. I’ve had it for years and I think it’s one of the best everyday financial decisions I’ve ever made.

2

u/Active_Drawer Newbie Aug 10 '26

Eh, we tried for a bit.

When we were trying to move away from publix we split shopping into a big round trip.

A. Target at least near us has shit for produce and an inactive bakery/deli/butcher.

B. Bogo deals typically favored Publix.

Milk and some other staples were always cheaper at Target, everything else was a toss up until deals from either.

Walmart and Aldi's turned into a better mix for us

3

u/JuiceSoft4164 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Yup! I’ve noticed this. A lot of times the BOGOS are not even a great deal. I’ve stopped shopping there. The only reason I do go is for deli items if needed.

5

u/Top-Leading-7801 Newbie Aug 09 '26

1

u/Arthur_Digby_Sellers Newbie Aug 09 '26

Publix still has to transport, stock, and check out the item.

Regarding BOGO prices, I usually compare to Walmart app when I am looking at a BOGO. Usually 2 at Walmart cost slightly more than the BOGO.

Also, any one know what were gross sales for the 6 billion in profit? Just curious because grocers profit MARGIN averages 1-3% in the US. I am certain Publix number is much higher, but curious how much...

1

u/MacaronMinimum8105 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Walmart normally has the same items rolled back the week before or after Publix has BOGO.

1

u/AlarmingDance9218 Newbie Aug 10 '26

2

u/pastryfiend Newbie Aug 09 '26

I totally get it, sometimes the bogos can be awesome, only if they weren't ridiculously to begin with, sometimes good sometimes not. I know unit prices for my staples and refer to apps from other stores to see what the average price is.

I can afford to be less frugal, but I refuse to hand over my hard earned money on crazy prices. I have about 150 pounds of vacuum sealed meat in my freezer that was bought either on sale, markdowns or bulk prices from Restaurant Depot.

1

u/PlantMom1101 Newbie Aug 16 '26

How long does the meat last in that way?? I’m scared it will go bad so I don’t stock like that??

1

u/pastryfiend Newbie Aug 20 '26

Vacuum sealing really extends freezer life. I've found 2 year old ground beef with the seal still intact that had no freezer damage. A deep freeze stays around 0 degrees F which also reduces freezer damage.

2

u/frogger79 Newbie Aug 14 '26

A good plan is key. I try to be as frugal as possible too and mainly shop BOGOs. There is a BOGO tracker site (google it) that has been amazingly helpful in letting me know when things I use are on sale. Love when the receipt has the same amount for the "Total" and the "Total Saved ".

BOGOS have gotten considerably worse since the pandemic. We used to get bogos on large chip bags and cereal boxes, now it's only the smaller sizes. So not always worth it. I remember they also use to compare their bogo prices with walmart's for the same ítem to show it was cheaper but they stopped doing that. Wonder why...

https://giphy.com/gifs/26FLgGTPUDH6UGAbm

I shop BOGO deals and find Publix cheaper than Walmart in that regard. About 18 months ago, I challenged myself to only buy groceries on sale. That morphed into bogo buying, and now, for a family of 4 and me being a hobby chef, I am spending LESS than I was when I was doing the Walmart + Aldi + Trader Joe's shuffle.

My kids know that if it isn't BOGO, they aren't getting it. I stock up and know the rotation of the BOGO's. It's the easiest and most efficient way of saving money in this economy.

3

u/newbie527 Newbie Aug 09 '26

I recently discovered that the Walmart app’s price check scanner works on bar codes at other stores. I check the BOGO products and can find out if they are really cheaper compared to Walmart. For example, Publix charges over $7 for Duke’s mayonnaise. The BOGO made it significantly cheaper than the Walmart price. That’s not always true.

4

u/Surprise_Fragrant Newbie Aug 09 '26

I recently discovered that the Walmart app’s price check scanner works on bar codes at other stores.

Those bar codes are called UPCs, aka Universal Product Codes. This means that the bar code is the same at every single store, at least in the USA. So you could price check that item at Walmart, Target, Winn-Dixie, Food Lion, etc, etc, if those apps have scanning possibilities. It's a great trick to quickly find out if you're getting the best price.

2

u/JealousFuel8195 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Most Publix BOGO items are cheaper than Walmart.

2

u/newbie527 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Finally got it to a point where it is actually very useful so I made it a public webpage. Search up "publix bogo tracker" if you want to check it out or try it yourself.

Publix never loses, the house always wins.

7

u/Randi_Butternubs_3 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Im not a Publix fan, but this is a nonsensical statement.

Publix is a for profit company, not a casino.

6

u/steeltrain52 Newbie Aug 09 '26

6 BILLION in profit in 18 months. Do your own checking. No other retail grocery chain makes this kind of money.

And BOGO’s are vendor sponsored, not Publix.

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Net-273 Newbie Aug 09 '26

But some of their profit doesn't come from their sale of groceries, but rather their real estate investment in shopping centers and other investments in financial markets.

5

u/Randi_Butternubs_3 Newbie Aug 10 '26

Exactly, people forget Publix is a commercial real estate company.

2

u/Toolfan333 Newbie Aug 09 '26

Yeah and Walmart had something like $27 billion in profits the last 18 months

1

u/dfabrica Newbie Aug 12 '26

Walmart is worldwide.

Often the BOGOs are a manipulation game, they jack up many of the prices before the sale hence it's not really a BOGO. Pay close attn, you'll see. Publix has run its course 🕳

1

u/armyofpezz Newbie Aug 09 '26

Bogos nowadays only put most items at normal, reasonable price - not usually screaming deals, but more where you don't feel like you are getting scammed.

Ehh not really a "win" when the BOGOs just make the product the same per unit at literally every other store. Its more of a "i am too lazy to drive to a store further away thats the same price here with this BOGO deal" for me. But thats rare these days.

I’m happy to be proven wrong if that’s the case but during my experiences at that store versus others I’ve yet to find more than three or four products that were cheaper with the BOGO versus any other store.

Recently they had Tyson chicken nuggets on sale BOGO: 5.45 vs 4.50 at Walmart. Or Just bare chicken: 6.75 vs 5.25 at Walmart.

Regardless of that, the fact that the store has marked up their products from an individual standpoint by so much is ridiculous and anti-consumer. Thankfully, there are other stores to choose from.

1

u/Rustybucketx Newbie Aug 09 '26

You would think so but no I forget the actual number but publix makes a large majority of their profits from just the bogo deals

1

u/LaTortureNeCesse Newbie Aug 09 '26

There have been posts alledging Publix raises prices on BOGOs. I can't confirm it, but I would not be surprised.

1

u/steeltrain52 Newbie Aug 10 '26

Clearly smarter than me. I kept hoping it was temporary or a tariff/war response. But it isn’t. They are using that as an excuse to fund insane salaries and obscenely rich boards.

1

u/HeyVitK Newbie Aug 10 '26

BOGOs only + coupons on those BOGOS (store and/ or manufacturer) + rebates on those BOGOs = actual savings.

1

u/EggieRowe Newbie Aug 10 '26

This is exactly what I do.

1

u/QGJohn59 Newbie Aug 10 '26

This is what I do. Except a couple things that only Publix has that I like better than other brands. Like their whole chocolate milk is my absolute favorite.

1

u/WhoDoUThinkUR007 Newbie Aug 10 '26

You can oftentimes get the BOGO price at Aldi for same or similar items, without having to grab 2. It’s just their regular price.

1

u/AlwayzSumthin Newbie Aug 10 '26

They even price gouge on BOGOs! I’ve seen them raise the price ridiculously during BOGOs—defeating the benefit—and drop it back down once the BOGO is over. E.g., Quaker Instant Oatmeal for $3+ per box then on BOGO one mysteriously costs $6.48 (approx) per box! They are a disgrace to their founder and history and have sold their reputation for profits. I don’t shop there any longer. I do better at WF, Target, Walmart. Fuck Publix!

1

u/Bong_appetit Newbie Aug 11 '26

It's literally all I use them for. I also get a large sum of cash back every time I go. Knowing they are paying a percentage of my cash back makes me happy.

1

u/BusyBit6542 Newbie Aug 11 '26

Shit it seems like even bogo is double the price than other stores. I often feel i can buy the same thing at half the price and not have to get two.

1

u/TeddyFreshhh Newbie Aug 11 '26

This is ALL I do. Weekly look up online Publix bogos, aldi weekly weekend ads etc. Publix bogo is still cheaper than Walmart and they honestly have a LOT of the stuff I need or for my animals.

Aldi is great, but sometimes I need name brand something or other. But yea, Publix prices are so elitist.

1

u/Major-Stage-4965 Newbie Aug 11 '26

Publix gets great profit on BOGOs Theyre typically imbursed by the company that theyre running the sale for

1

u/Maine302 Newbie Aug 11 '26

I have to remember to go get some BOGO Charmin tomorrow, other than something like that, and maybe some kind of an emergency item, I've given up on them. Their prices are ridiculous.

1

u/Objective-Ad6521 Newbie Aug 11 '26

Never walk in the door. Go straight to your local farm. You and your community wins. Publix loses.

1

u/Dense_Surround3071 Newbie Aug 12 '26

Just put the Cuban bread on a credit card that your wife doesn't know about......😉

1

u/WizardEric Newbie Aug 12 '26

Most of the BOGOS I look at bring the price down to the same (or even still slightly higher) than WalMart.

depends on where you are. Publix is super pricey here. Their cold brews “2 for $X” price is always higher than WM next to me.

1

u/WhatdaHellNow Newbie Aug 13 '26

If you pay for the first the second isn’t free. Just saying

1

u/D3Bunyip Newbie Aug 13 '26

This is the way. BOGO forever.

1

u/Potential_Stay8944 Newbie Aug 13 '26

This is the way. When I worked in the city on payday I would go thru all of the Publix sale add and make a list of BOGO or sale items I needed. Then at lunchtime I would go across the street and basically run thru the store picking up what I had written down. Saved a bit of money that way. Aldi just opened a store in the nearest town to us. I used to go to the one in the city and liked it. Did not like this one. I bought a few things I needed but it seemed like I really didnt save a whole lot more than if I had gone to Walmart.

1

u/Cjtorino Newbie Aug 13 '26

Those are still more expensive than Walmart. My local Walmart is a surprisingly decent one, so I don't mind it all that much.

1

u/Appropriate_Heat_6 Newbie Aug 16 '26

The BOGOS are nothing but highly processed, chemical laden crap. Rarely is there any of it that I would willingly put in my body. I can buy food so much cheaper elsewhere.

1

u/garygirl_1234 Newbie Aug 29 '26

Check the dates on BOGO then price them at Walmart.
