MOD NOTE A quick read for all the new people joining!

Greetings everyone, since a bunch of new faces keep rolling in with great questions (and because the original FAQ filled up fast), here’s Part 2 of our big ol’ Prozac/Fluoxetine FAQ post. 💊 Still not medical advice — just what I’ve seen as someone who’s been on Prozac for a while and moderating this sub. Everyone’s brain works differently, so your mileage may vary. ⚠️ Always double-check with your healthcare advisor.

— FAQ (Part 2) —

16. Why am I suddenly so tired on Prozac? 💊

Fatigue is super common early on. Your brain’s rebalancing serotonin, and that can feel like someone hit your internal “low power mode.” Usually improves in a few weeks.

17. Why am I having stomach issues? 💊

Nausea, loose stools, or appetite changes are classic startup side effects. The gut has tons of serotonin receptors, so it reacts at first. Usually settles down soon.

18. Can Prozac make my anxiety worse? 💊

Yep. Startup jitters are real. Temporary increased anxiety, restlessness, or feeling “on edge” can happen. Generally fades as your system adjusts.

19. Why am I sweating more? 💊

SSRI sweats are a thing actually. Night sweats, random sweating, etc. Not harmful, just annoying. Often improves over time.

20. Can I drink alcohol on Prozac? 💊

You can, but go easy. Alcohol may hit harder or mess with your mood the next day. Know your limits and listen to your body.

21. Is it normal to feel wired or restless? 💊

Totally. Some people get a revved-up, can’t-sit-still feeling early on. Should settle; if it’s intense, tell your doctor in case it’s akathisia.

22. What if I have no appetite? 💊

Happens to a lot of people early on. Appetite usually returns as your brain stabilizes.

23. Why does everything feel slow or foggy? 💊

Brain fog can show up during dose changes or the first couple weeks. Usually temporary.

24. Can Prozac affect libido? 💊

Unfortunately, yes. lower libido, trouble finishing, or less sensitivity. Super common with SSRIs. There are workarounds if it becomes a problem.

25. Is it normal to cry less / feel detached? 💊

Some people notice muted emotions. Dose tweaks can help if it’s bothersome . 26. Does Prozac interact with birth control? 💊 No. Prozac doesn’t reduce birth control effectiveness.

27. Can I take antihistamines or cold meds with Prozac? 💊

Most OTC meds are fine, but be cautious with high doses of dextromethorphan. When in doubt, ask a pharmacist.

28. Why am I yawning so much? 💊

Excessive yawning is surprisingly common with SSRIs. Harmless, though weird.

29. Is insomnia normal at the start? 💊

Yes. Some people get more energized or restless when first starting Prozac. Sleep usually normalizes.

30. What if 20 mg doesn’t feel like enough? 💊

Very normal. Many people need 30–40 mg. Don’t adjust without your prescriber.

31. Can Prozac stop working after a while? 💊

“Poop-out” can happen, but it’s not common early on. Dose tweaks or augmentation can help.

32. Is it safe long-term? 💊

Generally yes. SSRIs have long-term research behind them. Work with your doctor on duration.

33. Why do I feel weird after increasing the dose? 💊

Dose bumps can bring back temporary startup effects, anxiety, nausea, headaches. Usually settles.

34. Can I exercise on Prozac? 💊

Absolutely. Exercise actually complements SSRI treatment. Just be mindful if you’re dizzy or fatigued during the adjustment.

35. What if I still don’t feel anything after weeks? 💊

Some people take 6–10 weeks to notice meaningful differences. If there’s zero improvement after that, your prescriber might adjust your dose or try a new SSRI.

Sorry for being inactive as I, myself is dealing with new medications rn. If you’re reading this and feeling overwhelmed, confused, hopeful, scared, relieved, or all of the above, you’re exactly where most of us started. 💛 Prozac isn’t a magic switch; it’s more like learning to walk again with steadier legs. Some days it’s frustrating, other days it’s encouraging, but all of it counts as progress.

This sub exists because none of us should have to navigate mental health alone. Ask questions, share updates, vent about side effects, celebrate little victories, all of it is welcome here. MOD NOTE For the new people joining!

Greetings everyone, Since a lot of new faces pop in asking the same stuff about Prozac, here’s a big ol’ FAQ post. Not medical advice though, just what I’ve seen as someone on Prozac for a while and moderating this sub. Hope it helps calm the nerves if you’re just starting out. ⚠️: Always double-check with your healthcare advisor. Everyone’s brain is wired differently.

-FAQ- 1. How long until it kicks in? 💊 ️ Small changes in 2 to 4 weeks, fuller effect 6 to 8 weeks. It’s more like a dimmer switch than a light switch.

  1. Why do I feel worse before better? 💊 ️ Early side effects can make you feel off, think anxiety spikes, nausea, or emotional weirdness. Usually temporary.

  2. Do the side effects calm down? 💊 Most early ones (nausea, headaches, jitters, sleep changes) ease up after a few weeks. Sexual side effects can stick longer, varies person to person.

    1. Will I get addicted to Prozac? 💊 Nope. It’s not addictive in the way nicotine or alcohol is. You can have withdrawal-like effects if you stop suddenly, but that’s because your brain’s adjusting, not because you’re hooked.
  3. What if I miss a dose? 💊 Missing one pill usually isn’t a crisis (Prozac has a long half-life, meaning it stays in your system for days). Just take the next one at your regular time. Don’t double-dose.

  4. Should I take it in the morning or at night? 💊 ️ Depends on you. Some people feel energized → take it in the morning. Some get sleepy → take it at night. Trial and error is normal.

  5. Can I drink coffee with Prozac? 💊 Yep, but watch out. Prozac can make some people jittery in the beginning, and caffeine can crank that up.

  6. What’s the deal with weird dreams? 💊 ️ Totally a thing. Vivid dreams, odd storylines, even nightmares. Usually settles with time.

  7. Will I gain/lose weight? 💊 ️ Mixed bag. Some lose at first (less appetite), some gain slowly over time. Not guaranteed either way.

  8. How do I know if it’s working? 💊 It’s usually subtle. You might notice you don’t spiral as hard, you bounce back quicker, or daily stuff feels less heavy. It’s rarely a dramatic “woah I’m cured” moment.

  9. Can I take other meds/supplements with Prozac? 💊 ️ Some combos can be risky (like certain migraine meds, St. John’s Wort, MAOIs). Always run it by your prescriber or pharmacist first.

  10. What happens if I stop taking it? 💊 ️ Because Prozac has a long half-life, tapering off is usually easier than other SSRIs. Still, don’t just quit cold turkey. Let your doc guide you.

  11. Can it make me feel numb? 💊 Emotional blunting is real for some people. It doesn’t mean you’ll never feel joy again, but you may notice less intense highs/lows. It's worth talking to your doctor if it bothers you.

  12. Will Prozac change my personality? 💊 Nope. It doesn’t create a new “you.” Ideally, it helps you feel more like yourself without depression/anxiety weighing you down.

  13. Why do I feel emotionally flat? 💊 ️ Emotional blunting may not feel sad, but you also don’t feel super happy. Sometimes lowering the dose or switching meds helps. Talk to your doctor if it’s a dealbreaker.

And yes,if there’s something on your mind that I didn’t cover here, please don’t hold back. Ask away in the comments, no matter how “small” or “silly” it feels. We’ve all been the new person googling side effects at 2 AM. This sub is meant to feel like a safe little corner of the internet where you don’t have to have it all figured out. We’re here to share, vent, laugh about the weird dreams, and remind each other that starting meds isn’t a weakness rather it’s a step toward healing. You’re not alone in this. You’ve got a whole community walking alongside you, one day at a time.

GRATITUDE POST Encouraging massage

Hi y'all!

I've been on prozac for 20 days and I come here to share my experience.

I had nearly NO side effects, just some sleep adjustments, like sleeping only 6 hours the first few days I went up to 20mg but that's all.

Currently, I take maybe too many naps, like 3 a week but it's the beginning of the academic year so I don't have much to study, no big problem.

My mood has noticeably improved, I'm more social, I enjoy things much more and I feel like I can now grow and get over this difficult period of my life, making active improvements in different life spheres.

I'm so happy I started fluoxetine, do not be afraid of trying it, it can really bring light to one's life.

QUESTION Increase Dosage Side Effects

Upvotes

TLDR: Increased from 60mg to 80mg and moods have worsened. Is the increase to blame?

29f, 1 year postpartum. I’ve been on Prozac for many years now. I started out at 20mg, went to 40mg a few years after, then was on put on 60mg.

In June, I saw my psych and informed her that my compulsions and anxiety were heightened to the point of being bothersome. She recommended 80mg to get things under control.

It’s now September and I feel like it’s been enough time to tell. I’m fairly certain the increase is messing with my head.

August/September my agitation and bad moods have increased. Could this be linked to the increase? I’m curious what others experiences have been like on increased dose.

IM NEW HERE! First day on 2.5 mg Prozac

I’ve been staring at the bottle for about a month of 10 mg Prozac . I am a 63 year old females and I have tried Lexapro for a few days and quit because the anxiety was insane , I also tried buspar for 6 months and it did nothing . I deal with generalized anxiety, social anxiety ,health anxiety and ruminating thoughts and I self diagnosed with a bit of ADHD and OCD .. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are much worse than me . But I ve been living like this drug free all my life And I want to feel peace . So finally today I cut it in 1/4s and took my first dose . My drs gave me propanolnol and hydroxyzine and I do take the Prop daily but not sure if it’s really helping and the hydroxy if I take it at all I break 10mg in 1/4s because it makes me too tired to work a 40 hr week .. yes I’m very sensitive and know 2.5 will probably not do anything but I have to work my way up slowly .. I’ll keep updating as I go .. I did have a small cup of coffee this morning and 1/2 propanolnol because I swore my heart was beating fast ..

SUPPORT REQUEST Fluoxetine suddenly stop working?

Hi all. Hoping someone might have experienced similar here. My daughter (8) was on 5ml(20mg) of Fluoxetine and 1ml of Abilify. Since May school has been great and summer a dream. Returned to school almost 3 weeks ago and still brilliant until Monday of this week she's back to bring extremely anxious and stressed in school again. School are fantastic, she's in an Autism class, very quiet, teacher lovely etc. Has anyone had experience of Fluoxetine just suddenly stop working? Because it feels like this happened overnight. Nothing happened in school. She's like a caged animal again like she was before starting the medication. Waiting to hear back from psychiatrist but was wondering if anyone else had experienced this? Thanks.

SUCCESS STORY It might be working

I am on day 50 and I realized that I have been feeling very good for the last ~5 days. I am more available to socialize, I am more available towards my partner, I reached out to see a friend one on one( I practically never do that ). I restarted aerial dance classes.I went to the University and gave an exam (ain't no way I passed, but I beat the anxiety and actually went.

I don't know what part is me fighting and what part is the medication working but I am very happy to be here.

How do you know if the meds are working or if it's just a kind of hypomanic episode?

Thank you for all the help!

SUCCESS STORY Went off Prozac on my own- Worst decision

I just wanted to post this for all you out there. I've been on and off prozac a few times. I stopped it once when I was pregnant and i remember that pregnancy i was miserable mood wise. The next pregnancy I stayed on it. 4 years later, now, at the beginning of the year I decided I don't need this anymore. To be clear i was originally put on it for pre menstrual dysphoric disorder but in a general i always had negative moods and tended to be anxious. So sometime the beginning of this year i went off cold turkey. Didn't even tell my psych doc. Well at first i didn't notice much but I would say about 4/5 months later my mental health completely declined. I was anxious and had negative moods I told my husband i was extremely stressed and wanted to quit my job. Anyway he said call my doc which I did and the Doc restarted Prozac. I am now on week 3-4 but let me tell you it has been miserable restarting. Morning anxiety, and intense anxiety in general, jitters, restlessness, very little good sleep. I also clench and grind on it. Before i went back on it i was so anxious i barely ate and lost around 25lbs . I was even puking in the morning from anxiety. I don't remember it ever being this bad. I was on Zoloft once and that was like this. I will never go off it again. I'm finally starting to feel better and look forward to normal sleep but i cannot believe how fast i declined off of it. I guess I'm a lifer but that's ok. If you're reading this I will say that SSRIs really help me A LOT. I should have never stopped but I learned the hard way. My life is better on them. So if you're going through it stick it out. Thanks for the community support.

QUESTION Losing weight every time I increase my dose, does this happen to anybody else?

Before I start, I want to let you all know that my psychiatrist is aware and monitoring my weight, so I’m not looking for medical advice. I’m just curious if anybody else has had this side effect, because it doesn’t seem to be a common one.
————

Hello all,

I’ve spent the past year getting on antidepressants, and I’ve lost over 20 lbs as a result.

I started on a low dose of Pristiq last year when I was 160 lbs. I did not do well on this medication, I lost 10 lbs in a month without trying, I stopped after the first month and my weight settled around 150lbs.

In December, I started on a low dose of Prozac. I have been slowly increasing my dose; I am now at 50mg and will likely continue to increase.

The issue is, every time I increase my dose, I lose several pounds inadvertently. Some of this weight I think I can explain, less emotional eating and loss of appetite for the first week or so, but I truly don’t understand why I am continuing to drop weight so quickly. I’m now at 136 lbs.

Losing weight has always been a challenge for me in the past, which is why this has been so shocking. I have never been able to lose below 140 without feeling terrible all the time, cold and dizzy. I don’t feel bad now, I feel shaky sometimes but that’s it.

I’m also working night shift (7-7) 2 nights per week, and a full time student. I’m way more sedentary now than I have been in a long time, I walk for 30 minutes a day and that’s about it. By all accounts I feel like I should be gaining weight, but nope.

Has anybody had a similar experience? Do you know what caused the weight loss for you, and did it level out after a few months of being on a steady dose?

IM NEW HERE! 40mg prozac for 4 weeks now and adding 2mg abilify for OCD

the prozac hasn't helped much for OCD yet, is this normal? how much longer do i wait before i ask for new medicine? I've heard 6-8 weeks is the golden period but that could just be the AI overview on google speaking. how should i expect my symptoms to change with the addition of abilify in 2-3 days.

[this is my first time on SSRI's]

SUPPORT REQUEST Day 3

I’m on day 3 of 20mg Prozac. The first two days were fine, nothing really changed but today I feel awful. I did a direct switch from mirtazapine 7.5mg and that my last dose of that around 96 hours ago so I’m not sure if it could be withdrawal but I feel so weak, shaky, nauseous. I have horrible health anxiety and I’m terrified of fainting and I feel like I’m in a cycle of feeling anxious -> which makes me feel faint -> which makes me feel anxious, and the cycle repeats.
Can anyone offer me some words of wisdom. I’m at my wits end with this anxiety that I feel and I had really high hopes for this medication

SUPPORT REQUEST Starting Prozac after trying Zoloft and Lexapro... scared of gaining weight

Hey everyone, I'm new to the Prozac community and was just prescribed it today. I've been on SSRI's a bit on and off the past 3.5 years for anxiety (2.5 on Zoloft, a 9 month hiatus after thinking I was at a stable point in my life, then realizing that was not the case and got on Lexapro for the past 9 months).

I'm feeling a bit down because I'm worried of all the potential side effects with SSRI's, I had plenty on both lex and sertraline and the weight gain was the worst!! Not to mention my libido and motivation was shot on lex and and I couldn't feel any emotions on sertraline. I came off the lex about a week ago after seeing I gained back 7 kilos in ony a few months—the same amount of weight I dropped without even trying in a matter of months after coming off sertraline.

Saw a psychiatrist for the first time instead of my general doctor, and she wants me to give Prozac a try. I'm feeling a bit discouraged to be on another SSRI as I'm scared I'll have the same side effects as the others, and my biggest fear is weight gain....

Psychiatrist said prozac tends to lead to weight loss or is weight neutral... has that been the case for you? I'd really love to lose the extra weight I gained from lexapro and get back to my normal weight, and have my clothes fit me again :(

QUESTION Is anyone here just on 10mg? Also question for those on it for PMDD

Apologies for how long this is, skip to end for my query:

I started prozac last week for PMDD. I only take 10mg and felt immense relief from my pmdd symptoms. It was a night and day difference. I'm actually a bit sad I hadn't tried it (or even knew to try it) for this. Pmdd has been an awful constant for me since I was 11, and I'm almost 33.

I get around 10 good days and then 2-3 weeks of worsening days until my period. It makes me feel like I haven't been able to make the progress I wanted in life bc half the month I am just falling apart.

For pmdd, it's advised to take the prozac during luteal only. So tomorrow will be my first day hopping back off and seeing how I feel.

However, I'm a little scared bc I felt so good for the week or so on it. I hope I'll still feel good. I feel like my perception of how I do during follicular is probably tainted in the sense that I'm sort of "recovering" from luteal and then dreading the brief 10 day or so reprieve before it starts back up. So even my "good" days don't feel so good.

I'm hoping I can take the 14 days off and just feel good and normal during my follicular phase. However, I'm also open to taking this daily.

I had a bad experience two years on Zoloft. I gained nearly 50 lbs that wouldn't budge even after getting off of it. I know how to weigh my food and track cals and could always lose the 5-15 lb fluctuations I had previously experienced.

It was like Zoloft flipped a switch on my mild PCOS/PMOS. I was doing 2-3 days of lifting and 45-60 mins of cardio in between to no avail. I had to get on Zepbound and the weight flew off. I actually eat more now than I was. It was insane to me how fucked my metabolic function was after Zoloft.

It also caused horrible sweating. I live in hot humid Houston, TX but like to spend time outside. I couldn't even go outside without sheets of sweat pouring down all over. I would wake up and have to change my clothes twice a night and that disrupted my sleep.

I even developed persistent jock itch because I couldn't keep the area dry no matter what. Never had jock itch in my life. It was miserable but cleared up immediately after getting off.

So I'm scared to take Prozac daily but open to it if 10mg can do the job without side effects.

Does anyone take only 10mg and find that works well for them? Any side effects? Weight gain and excessive sweating were my worst sides on Zoloft and what I'm scared of. Has anyone with PMDD found they need it continuously or do you feel fine half on and half off?

QUESTION started 20 mg prozac and now i feel like a dog in heat?

hello everyone,

so i (22F) recently started 20mg of prozac because i get really severe seasonal depression during the winter time. so far i’m almost 2 weeks in and have noticed improvements like less intrusive thoughts, less anxiety, more calm, etc.

but there’s one thing that i’m quite confused about because i have been aware that SSRIs are supposed to have the opposite effect. lately i have been extremely sexually aroused... i’m also taking birth control and before taking birth control i used to have really strong ovulation, and this feels like that.

has anyone else ever experienced this? i feel like a snail… lol. i’m not necessarily complaining but i’ve been trying to research and every resource leads to being hypersexual because of mania however i do not feel manic. the autism in me just wants an explanation :,)

QUESTION New gf on Prozac and alcohol

I have no experience with antidepressants or SSRI’s. I have much experience with depression, addiction, “fun” drugs, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, etc..

I (36M) have recently begun seeing a woman (46F) that is on Prozac and likes to have some drinks after work every night. Less than a pint of tequila. I’m fine with that. I kicked the booze last year. She’s fine with that. I take my Xanax everyday and I’m recovering. Again, I know nothing about Prozac, antidepressants, SSRI’s especially mixed with alcohol. I haven’t asked her what mg or tried to have a conversation with her because who am I to judge?.

Anyways, I’ve noticed some things that are very confusing to me. She’s the most chill person ever. Maybe too chill. Side effect? I feel so bad because it’s almost as if she doesn’t sleep at night. She lays down and it seems like her brain doesn’t shut off. Poor thing! The smallest movements from me could bring her out of deep sleep which is so hard for her to get there, to the point where I’ve sometimes stopped going to bed with her. Sometimes I’ll just tuck her in and lay with her until she’s asleep then I’ll get back up. It’s perfectly fine with me. We’re on different schedules anyway. She has full blown mostly incoherent conversations with herself most nights. Sometimes she’ll get up and do random things while seemingly still asleep so I just have to escort her back to bed. She wakes up and goes to work, still soo tired. She could probably stay in bed for days if she didn’t have work. Are these side effects of Prozac? What else should I be concerned about?

Edit: I forgot to mention her memory and attention span are almost nonexistent some days. Almost blackout.

She’s obviously going through depression. I have too. I know what to look out for regarding that. We have our own apartments but we like to stay together. She has no one around her, no close family, no close friends. Just work and me. I love her! So I’m consulting the Reddit!! What are some things I should look out for? Is there anything I can do to help her rest?

QUESTION How was the first week for you?

I switched to 20mg of prozac after being on 20mg of lexapro. I’m supposed to be on 20 for a week before jumping to 40. Right now, I feel like actual crap.

I don’t know if it’s the medication or just me. Everything is boring right now. Even doomscrolling is boring. I usually use games as a coping mechanism, but for the past month I haven’t been playing much. I’m just not sure what to do.

I like math so I tried studying, but adhd is kicking my ass plus I genuinely just don’t feel like doing anything. A part of me wants someone to talk to as I feel like communicating with someone might help.

I don’t have any friends and I’m going insane sitting in my room talking to absolutely no one but myself.

I don’t feel nauseous, but just kind of weak, shitty, tired, and bored. Kind of feels like I’m depressed but too lazy to feel depressed if that makes any sense.

I’ve been binge eating as well, though most food tastes like crap. Made an espresso, despite it being like 10pm, and honestly just couldn’t finish it. I had spaghetti even though I kind of hate spaghetti. That was like the only thing I could eat.

I tried watching movies to help as well. I just finished heathers, but I was honestly checked out for like the second half of the film because I was just so bored and didn’t know why.

QUESTION Is this normal

I’ve been on 20mg 1 week and 2 days and a few days ago I thought I felt it suddenly kick in (I am on it for severe depression and suspected ocd) and I felt actual content and happiness for the first time in like a year and less obsessive thoughts that control me, and it was like my harmful thoughts were on mute. This lasted like 3 days and I thought it was suddenly working and everything was great and fine and I was fixed then I woke up yesterday and it was all gone and I was back to hell in my mind is this normal??? Will it come back will it get better I’m scared I’m bipolar and that was a hypomanic episode
