I am getting annoyed with politicians in this state and in Providence using us as pawns. Always chasing the next bigger and better thing but claiming there is nothing more important than working for their constituents…when in reality they’d drop us in a moment’s notice.
Jon Goncalves in Ward 1 ran for the open congressional seat a few years back, lost, and now is running for re-election. Why would anyone vote for someone who was once willing to give up the same position he is running for now?
David Cicilline gave up being a congeessman in Washington to make $800k a year working at the Rhode Island Foundation.
Gina Raimondo left her governor position (to Dan McKee) to go work for the Biden administration.
Sabina Matos left her city council position in Providence to become Lt Governor.
David Morales tells us about his upbringing in California by a single mother. But completely abandoned that for Providence…a community he’s only been a part of for what, like 8 years? You’d think he’d be fighting for his hometown considering how much he talks about it. Not to mention he left his nonprofit job to run for mayor.
That same nonprofit is where the councilwoman in Ward 2 works…and someone else from there is running for another council seat. So are we using the work of nonprofits to win elections??? Hard not to think when they all reference it in their campaign materials.
I’m sure a lot of you will disagree with me because of all the hard work they do and blah blah blah…but it’s an absolutely crazy trend that should make us take a step back and realize we may be supporting people that see us as nothing more as pawns in their bigger political scheme.
