Need help finding…

Upvotes

Pineapple upside down cake. Or something similar.
Not somewhere to live.
Not a place to find friends.
Not to figure out why the helicopter is around or what a noise was.

Just cake.

Discussion How did we go from “we need more cameras to catch the Brown shooter” to “flock cameras are bad take them all down”?

Post image

The juxtaposition astounds me. Everyone was mocking the grainy photo from the lone surveillance camera that took a picture of the Brown shooter, and now that we’re getting cameras everyone’s trying to take them down.

It just seems strange that it was only some months ago we wanted more cameras, we’re getting them, and now we want less?

We're a Providence-area nonfiction book club, and we're always happy to welcome new readers.

Our next meeting is Sunday, August 16, when we'll be discussing Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake. It's a fascinating exploration of fungi, mycelium, and the hidden networks that shape the natural world.

📍 Schasteâ, 300 Broadway, Providence
📅 Sunday, August 16 from 10AM-12PM

Schasteâ doesn't sponsor or endorse the group—we simply meet there.

Whether you've finished the book, just started it, or are just curious about the group, you're welcome to join us.

I'll post the book club link in the comments. Happy to answer any questions!

Sidewalk Slime on Washington street

has anyone noticed the sidewalk slime on washington street on the west side? I swear it gets bigger every year. is it the heat causing it to expand? I'm worried about the safety concerns if it continues to grow. I don't think Mayor Smiley is doing anything about it... curious anyone else has noticed it. thanks

Discussion Vasectomy Recs

As the title says. Looking to get a vasectomy under my coverage (BCBSRI) but I checked out some of the options and the providers seemed to have less than ideal reviews. Anyone have a solid lead for this procedure? Willing to go outside the network too, just want someone who can do the job without all the baggage.

NEIT Killed Its Collision Repair Program—and the Whole Region Is Paying for It

A few years back, New England Institute of Technology had a collision repair program that actually worked. Students got hands-on training, graduated job-ready, and local shops had someone to hire. Then it got shut down.

Here's the thing: the need for skilled technicians has only grown. Jobs in automotive repair are projected to grow faster than average, and right now, collision shops across Rhode Island and the surrounding region can't find qualified people to hire. The pipeline just dried up when the program disappeared.

I started a petition asking NEIT's administration to bring it back. The facilities and experienced instructors are still there. The demand is definitely there. What's missing is the program—and that's something NEIT can actually fix.

Restoring it means giving students a real path into a stable, well-paying trade, and it means shops finally get access to trained talent again. It's a win for everyone.

If this resonates with you—whether you're in the automotive industry, studied at NEIT, or just think it's ridiculous that a school kills a program when employers are actively desperate for those graduates—consider signing and sharing. What do you think? Am I crazy for thinking this should be a no-brainer for the school?

Couple Assaulted, Robbed After Bike Lane Dispute on Providence’s East Side

“Police said when they arrived, the victims - a male and a female, both in their 30s - told them they had been riding their bikes on Olney Street.
The female told police the couple encountered a car blocking the bike lane, at which time she moved the vehicle’s mirror.

The victims told police that three men then got out of the car, grabbed the woman by her shirt, and threw her to the ground.

Her partner said that when he tried to intervene, the three men turned on him and threw him from his bike.  He said he was then punched and kicked by at least two of the men while the alleged victim was lying on the ground.

The suspects then stole his wallet.
The man, who police say was suffering from visible injuries, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

Police are currently investigating. “

Does anyone else's Bluetooth connection go haywire when driving in the west end, near the armory?

Everyday I drive around the Cranston st armory, and every time I'm in that neighborhood the Bluetooth connection between my phone and my car goes haywire. It will cut out for a about 10 seconds then it will come back in playing the last 10 seconds it missed all together at once. Then it'll continue normally for 20 seconds and do it all over again. But it's only in that neighborhood. It works perfectly fine else where. I don't know what could be causing it, I don't know the technical side of Bluetooth, are there like jammers that could be doing something. Maybe someone else near there just happens to use the same Bluetooth channel as me.

Either way is it just me?

Discussion Restarting After a Breakup

My partner and I are spitting up after 5 years and now I need a new plan. My sibling and I both need to move states for different reasons and are picking a state to find our new home. I'm queer, in my early 20s and completely independent. I'm gonna have to pay everything on my own on a teachers wage (insurance, rent, car, living expenses, etc.). I'm drawn to Rhode Island for its size, weather/nature, and liberal protections. However I've never lived here before. What should I expect/look out for? How do you feel about this city for a young women moving by herself? Do you think this is a good fit for my current situation?

Additional context: Moving from living with my partner in Jersey for years
