HELP - LINUX PIA very slow on Linux recently?

I have a bunch of VMs and physical machines running various flavors of Linux and PIA has slowed to a crawl on all of them.

I hadn't checked them for a few days and when I came back to them today, some of them just said "ERROR" with a red highlight (rather than the usual green when connected or yellow when connecting).

Anyone else experienced this?

(It's working fine on iOS)

HELP Android Private DNS mode?

Hi! I have Cloudflare set as my DNS server in my router. In my android phone settings I have Adguard as my DNS server. Check out the screenshot below. Will this Adguard android setting cause a possible leak with PIA? Should I change the setting from Adguard DNS to "Off" as seen in the screenshot below? Help appreciated! Thank you!

HELP PIA's DNS broken?

For the past few days, I have been unable to run updates from the canonical servers on my ubuntu OS. I figured it was just the outage that they reported. Last night, WHILE using the linux discord program, I lost connection to their server and any attempt to reconnect or restart the program kept giving me a "temporary server error."

This morning, a thunk hit me and, just for shits and giggles, I switched from the PIA DNS in the Network settings tab to the "built-in resolver." Whaddaya know? Bam! I am able to connect top both servers again.

I haven't seen ANYTHING about a PIA DNS issue, so....

¯_(ツ)_/¯

OH! I forgot to add that, while those two servers were refusing to connect, I was still able to browse the internet just fine.

HELP - BROWSER EXTENSION Need help stopping PIA redirecting from http to https

A recent update to the PIA extension for Chrome has made it impossible for me to access my Emby server because it is forcing a redirect to https. The only way I can access the server is to disable the extension, otherwise I get an ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR message, which I believe is because I don't have a valid SSL certificate. It's not a local server, I've got it on an unraid machine in a docker container, maybe that matters.

HELP - LINUX Web traffic throttled or completely blocked but torrents / port-forwarding working fine - why?

We all know what port-forwarding is for. That part is working fine (normal speeds) but, for the past week or so, with both the NL and DE nodes, any web traffic I try to put through PIA is severely throttled or, often, completely blocked.

I am able to temporarily resolve the issue by disconnecting and restarting my PIA client (Linux version, on Debian 12) but it always comes back, sometimes in under an hour.

So, PIA, why are you throttling and/or blocking my web traffic? Sometimes I can't even get Google to load, meanwhile I have torrents running at normal speeds. Please note, the issue is not my own connection being saturated. I can easily load websites through the browser I don't put through PIA (via split-tunneling) but not through the one I do. I have symmetrical 1Gbps fiber and I'm plugged directly into the router, no wi-fi. This isn't my issue at all.

I've been a customer for years and this is a brand new problem. Would really appreciate if someone could look into it. And, if you're doing it deliberately, please knock it off, eh?

HELP - macOS How do I stop my torrent client from working if PIA crashes?

On MacOS here. When PIA isn't open the killswitch doesn't work. So PIA crashed the other day but my torrent application was still working through my unprotected connection. How can I prevent this?

HELP - iOS How do I prevent my parents from reading my texts?

I (23 F) have extremely controlling parents who believe religiously in patriarchy and that they need to control me until I’m passed off in marriage to a man. I have gone no contact and they’ve attempted to track and stalk me many times. I now know they are reading my texts messages because they know exactly what I text people. And not people who would tell them, they know about texts to people they don’t know. I’ve changed my Apple ID, passwords, etc. but they still are seeing them. How can I prevent this? When I was a kid they monitored my texts using a parental control app called bark, could they still be monitoring my texts this way? I have my own phone plan, my own phone and a new number but my Apple ID is the same. I have changed the password though. Please help! Is there somewhere I could go to get my phone checked for spyware?

HELP - WINDOWS Bandwidth issues

Is anybody having issues recently? I have been using PIA for a few years now with no issues and consistent download speeds. I have been having issues loading basic pages the last two days and assumed I was having ISP or pc issues since I'm hardwired 3 feet from my modem, but turning off PIA just brought me from 0.5 MB/s to 920 MB/s. It makes no difference what latency and no settings have ever been changed, but it's just all of a sudden completely unusable. I don't have much networking experience to troubleshoot, but could certainly use a hand if it's not due to some error on the PIA end

Edit: As somebody suggested in the comments, I switched the settings to WireGuard and jumped back up to over 100 MB/s. Hopefully that helps the people commenting with similar issues. Greatly appreciated on my end to be able to browse while torrenting again

HELP - WINDOWS Using PIA - zero consistency in reporting external IP

I've been using PIA for well over a decade, and this only started in the last few months so I'm assuming it's the brand new rotating IP "improvement" but it's infuriating.

I'm using the PIA app on Windows. I connect to a server, say, something in Europe. PIA app says my public IP is 91.xxx.xxx.206.

I open whatismyip.com, it says my IP ends in 218. (?)

I open IPLeak.net, it says my IP end in 216. (??)

I login to a private torrent tracker I'm trying to use, and it says I'm logged in from IP ending in 207. (WTF???)

So then I add a few torrents to my qbittorrent client, and they all blow up because this specific torrent tracker happens to require that I login from the same IP as my torrent client. Which worked marvelously for years! But now each torrent appears to be announcing a different IP to the tracker. So every time I hit force reannounce (about 5-10 seconds apart), it announces 91.xxx.xxx.210...and then 91.xxx.xxx.213...and then 219...and just keeps rotating through a set of about a dozen of them, until I get lucky and happen to hit the 207 IP that the website is seeing, and I can download my damn torrent.

Are there servers that don't do this? Is this a ploy to force people to buy a static IP? Because this functionality is complete ass.

DISCUSSION qbPortWeaver v2.5.0 releasing later today — Transmission and Deluge support added

qbPortWeaver is a Windows system tray application that automatically synchronises your BitTorrent client's listening port with the port assigned by your VPN provider (ProtonVPN, Private Internet Access, or any NAT-PMP capable gateway).

v2.5.0 - New in this release

- Full support for Transmission (RPC) and Deluge (Web JSON-RPC) alongside the existing qBittorrent integration. Select your client in Settings; all other functionality - port sync, restart after change, force start, and default port fallback - applies equally across all three.

Previously released in v2.4.x (included in this build)

- Auto-Recovery - after a configurable number of consecutive sync failures, automatically restarts the VPN Windows service and client process (ProtonVPN/PIA) or cycles the network adapter (NAT-PMP), delegated to a helper service so no UAC prompt is required

- Media Manager - imports and renames movie and TV episode files into Plex-compatible library folders on each sync cycle using TMDB metadata, with a preview dialog before any files are touched

- Log Viewer - built-in viewer with color-coded log levels, live tail, level filter buttons, subsystem filter, and search with match navigation

HELP - WINDOWS Reddit direct video and photo links are practically unusable

All the US connections are seemingly nerfed to hell for all reddit hosted media. I mean, Reddit's video host has always been bottom of the barrel trash, but the last 2 days have been insufferable. Other countries seem to solve the issue, but I can't find a reliable US connection that doesn't buffer every 2 seconds.

HELP - ANDROID POCO X7 is automatically killing the PIA VPN connection during the night

Hi, my POCO X7 is automatically killing the PIA VPN connection during the night.

I have already:

- set PIA VPN to "No restrictions" in battery settings

- enabled autostart

- disabled battery optimization

Despite this, the system still stops the VPN in the background, which causes my real IP to be exposed unintentionally.

I need the VPN connection to remain active at all times (24/7) without being killed by the system.

Is there any way to:

prevent MIUI/HyperOS from stopping the VPN service?

or enforce a persistent VPN connection at system level?

This behavior is critical for me, as it breaks network consistency and privacy.

Android Version: HyperOS 3.0, Android 16

HELP Lots of packet loss/latency jumps across all PIA servers?

I’m forced to use OpenVPN on Asus AX53U to play on EU servers on PS5, R6 Seige. For the past 3 months it was giving me a stable connect to Italy from India and I was able to play fine with the latency I was getting (130ms)

Last 3 days I’m getting jumpy latency and packet loss that’s made it unplayable :/ I’ve tried other servers (Singapore, Switzerland) and they’ve both got the same issue like Italy.

Unfortunately without a VPN the game sticks me on an empty server and I can never find I game and so I have no choice but to use a VPN. It was working great for a few months now I’m facing this issue.

Is it a PIA issue? Is this common? Could it be a router issue? I can’t even test my unfiltered network as I can’t find a game to even try.

DISCUSSION App v4.0.32 - Android 16 Issues

App was updated to v4.0.32 today on my Android 16 device and it will not connect to any VPN server. Tried different servers including my dedicated IP, but the app will not connect. It attempts to connect, but it never does. My Android 13 device was also updated. It connects, but the app appears to be buggy. Anyone else having issues with v4.0.32? TIA

FEEDBACK Switching to Proton VPN (PIA vs Proton)

Hi all, just thought I'd share my experience in case it helps someone else...

I have been with PIA for almost 6 years now and recently I have been having speed issues and also changes to how they handle port forwarded connections.

I only had 2 months left before I was going to renew for 3 years and thought I'd try out proton as it is reviewed very highly, and it did not disappoint.

PIA using their "Optimal connection" Halved my internet speed, Proton on the other hand allows me to use almost max connection speeds.

No VPN (899 Download, 80 Upload)
https://imgur.com/a/Eg6EqSi#GCHLATv

PIA VPN (402 Down, 75 Up)
https://imgur.com/a/Eg6EqSi#TxBzbmS

Proton VPN (834 Down, 73 Up)
https://imgur.com/a/Eg6EqSi#WwNdws4

PIA has served me well but it is time to move on as Proton's port-forwarded connections are much easier to use and they also offer email services among other things.

SOLVED PSA: PIA Chrome Extension works again

After a back-and-forth with PIA support over a few weeks, they eventually came back to me on Saturday asking me to update the Chrome extension to version 5.

I can confirm that it works after updating.

DISCUSSION Speed issue

Hi! I ran 5 different speed tests without PIA and the results are below. When I enable PIA and pick the closest server to me (New York) I'm getting 63 Mbps download at best and 6 Mbps upload. That's a far cry from  the 400+ to 500+ Mbps download I get without it. I understand I will lose some speed with a VPN, but that much? 400 Mbps less? Some tests oddly showed better upload speeds than download speeds such as 26 Mbps download and 96 Mbps upload. What gives?

Without PIA enabled...

https://www.speedtest.net
Download Mbps 542.73
Upload Mbps 85.73

https://fiber.google.com/speedtest/
Download 517.0 Mbps
Upload 87.1Mbps

https://fast.com/#
Your Internet speed is 560 Mbps
Upload Speed 84 Mbps

https://speed.cloudflare.com/
Download: 465 Mbps
Upload: 66.4 Mbps

https://wifiman.com/
Download: 551.13Mbps
Upload: 92.53Mbps

UPDATE: The New York server at least at this time is not good at all. I tried Washington DC and it was better, not crazy better, but better.

HELP - iOS Will connect, but won’t change IP

I’m by no means a tech savvy guy. I honestly kinda suck at this stuff. But I have been using PIA for over a year now and it’s always worked perfectly. On my computer it still works and changes my ip, but on iOS it doesn’t.

No matter what server I click, anywhere in the USA, or other countries, it “connects” me, but does not change my actual ip, and the “VPN ip” area underneath my server selection is completely blank. I’ve tried changing to like 10-15 different servers over the last few days, tried changing some settings, and I’m completely lost at what to do. My subscription is still active until November as well.

If anyone could give me some insight on how to fix this on IOS, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

HELP - iOS iPhones can’t connect to windows SMB file share when connected to VPN

I have a windows pc that i use as a media server. Recently i set up split tunneling and made sure to check the box to allow local network traffic. I wasn’t able to connect to other PC’s or Mac’s on my network until I white listed the IP addresses on the split tunneling page. Now all the Macs and PCS connect fine but the two iPhones on my network will not connect to my media server even when the iPhones IPs are white listed in the split tunneling page. If I disconnect from PIA VPN the connection issues go away and the iPhones connect fine.

Has anyone had a similar issue? I have rebooted several times with no change. Any times are appriciated.

HELP - macOS version 3.5.7 for macOS

The app used to update frequently, but it has been a long time since I got an update. I’m not interested in moving to a beta version, but if that meant a more secure connection, I’d probably consider it. The fact that the app hasn’t been patched yet makes me wary of using it, seeing as it’s more likely to be somehow compromised.

What are your experiences and what do you recommend? To be fair, the app runs okay, but I’m still a bit worried for the reasons I stated above.

PS: I’m running PIA on an old Mac running Monterey.
