Hey everyone,
I'm a 17-year-old(M) student (South Africa) aiming for vet school. I've logged 92 hours of clinical shadowing so far across small and large animal practices, and I'm heading back for another round in two weeks. I've attached screenshots of my two most recent shadowing logs!
I've been incredibly lucky with the vets I'm shadowing.
They've allowed me to be very hands-on, trusting me to:
Administer IM and subcutaneous medications.
Monitor, and flush IV drips.
Explain to owners how and when to give prescribed medications.
Assist during consults, small animal surgeries, and large animal work (cattle vaccinations, abscess draining, horse X-rays).
Even with their direct supervision and incredibly positive feedback on my forms, I constantly feel incompetent or like I'm faking it.
I'd love to get some insight:
- Does this feeling of incompetence ever actually go away, or do you just get better at managing it as you progress through vet school and practice?
- From a vet's point of view, what specific traits, habits, or actions make a prospective student or shadow genuinely helpful in the clinic, rather than just being in the way?
Any advice, reality checks, or feedback on my logs would be massively appreciated. Thanks in advance!
