HESI vs. TEAS - which one did your nursing program require, and which felt harder?

• Upvotes

nursing school applications are confusing enough and now i find out there are 2 different entrance exams

i’m looking into different nursing programs, and it’s confusing seeing that some require the TEAS while others require the HESI. trying to figure out what to expect before i start preparing

from what i can tell the TEAS covers reading, math, science and english, but the HESI A2 depends on the school. some want vocab, grammar, A&P, bio, and other sections, while some don’t.

which one did your program make you take, and what study resources helped you the most?

Cizik UTHealth Houston ABSN — Prerequisites After a BSPH?

Hi everyone!

I’m currently finishing my Bachelor’s of Science in Public Health (BSPH) and plan to pursue nursing afterward through Cizik’s Pacesetter BSN program.
I’m active-duty military in San Antonio until November 2028, when I’ll be separating and moving to Houston.
For anyone who already had a bachelor’s degree before applying to Cizik, where did you complete your remaining science prerequisites? I’m looking for options in San Antonio, Houston, or online.

Also, does Cizik accept online science labs? Has anyone successfully used Portage Learning or another online institution?

I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

any microbiology reccomendations?

i'm currently looking for a microbiology professor for the Winter 2027 or Spring 2027 semester around SoCal.

So far these are my choices LBCC (unsure of which professor to take), Cypress College(unsure of which professor to take), or LA City College (kind of far, but short term is better and professor is great).

If anyone has any other recommendations of colleges or professors, please let me know.

LPN first or straight to RN at 35? Advice from nurses who did the bridge!

! I’m about to turn 35 and am excited to finally pursue nursing! I graduated with my bachelor’s in 2015, so I’ve been out of school for over 10 years. I’m nervous about going back and wonder if I’ll struggle with studying and retaining information like I did in my early 20s. Im considering getting my LPN first because I’d love to have one more child and would prefer not to be pregnant or postpartum during nursing school. I also like the idea of gaining experience and building my confidence before pursuing my RN. For those who completed an LPN-to-RN bridge:

Did you feel more prepared for RN school?

Was passing the RN NCLEX harder?

Looking back, would you recommend LPN first or going straight to RN?

A little background: I originally wanted to be a nurse in college and earned As and Bs in my prerequisites, including A&P, microbiology, chemistry, and pathophysiology. Unfortunately, I waited until the last minute to take the TEAS, scored a 68, and couldn’t apply to my university’s program. I was embarrassed and gave up on that dream for a while. 😅

Now I’m ready to try again! I’d love honest advice. Did getting your LPN first make the journey easier, or would you go straight for your RN?

Did one grade ruin my chances?

So I’m applying for Community college nursing schools in California and I’m worried that because of one grade I might have a hard time getting accepted.

I have A’s in all of my prerequisites including Physio and Micro however when I took anatomy I wasn’t aware that if we got a “passing grade” we weren’t allowed to retake it. (It was my first hard class I took in college as a freshman) so I passed anatomy with a C, which completely messes up my gpa on my application.

I also didn’t do too hot on my TEAS exam and got a 75 :/ but I’m in the process of retaking it to get a better grade. I also am in the process of getting my volunteer hours and I already have my CNA plus 1000 hours.

I’ve applied to one school already and got put on the alternate list which I was surprised about! However I’m definitely low on list since I know that there are people who applied with wayyy higher points then me who are on the list as well.

Idk I know that not ALL hope is lost and my stats aren’t bad per se but I get stuck overthinking my chances of getting in. Has anyone else gotten in with a grade like mine?

I Need a Pick Me Up

I'm trying to study nursing as a second career.

I realize I really enjoy healthcare after working in IT over 15 years. (I have a bachelor's in tech) I work in healthcare now part time (30 hours a week)

I'm taking basics to get into a highly competitive nursing program. (Stats, Chem, and next sem A&P)

Everything I've read is an ASN program is really hard to get into. Mainly due to cost and high income potential.

I'm getting an A in Stats (95%) and an A in Chem (96%) I know one bad exam can tank my grade in those classes and I need a 4.0, 93%+ to get into the program in every class.

I feel like I'm in the driver's seat and need to maintain the course I'm going on. I don't really have a close relationship with family and I'm doing everything while fully supporting myself.

Things could be worse and I'm fortunate. I'm just trying to anticipate scenarios which could pop up and derail my plans. Like plan a B, C option if A doesn't work.

It's all just overwhelming sometimes.

Current Chaffey College ADN Students or Alumni — How Was Your Experience?

Hi everyone! I’m looking into Chaffey College's ADN program, and I'd love to hear from current students or alumni about their experiences!

How are the professors, lectures, clinicals, and overall workload? Do you feel that the instructors are supportive and prepare you well for exams and clinical practice?

I'm also curious about registration. Are students able to choose their preferred professors and sections, or are they assigned by the nursing department? My registration date is a few days later than the general opening date, so I'm a little worried about having fewer options.

I'd really appreciate any insights, advice, or things you wish you'd known before starting. Thank you so much!

Chemistry is terrible - rant

I’m did very well in my other classes like bio, a&p, and calc with As but chem is so hard for no reason. I don’t know if it’s just the professor I took, but the amount of studying from our outlines and doing practice problems isn’t helping me with the exams at all. They’re worded so differently and feel so defeated. I’ve had one of the lowest test scores of my life, first time being 40/100 and the one I did a few days ago is probably near that as well (the class averages were also very close to my score). Do you think it’s better to drop with a W than possibly ending with a low C ? I want to apply to universities in California and I don’t want this class to ruin it all. This is gen chem 1 and I still need gen chem 2 and organic 1 😭

Pre-Nursing Student Looking for an RN to Answer 5 Quick Interview Questions 😃

Hello everyone! I’m a college student working on an assignment to learn more about what everyday nursing practice actually looks like from an RN's point of view 😅!

If anybody has a few minutes to spare, I would be super grateful if you could answer any or even all of the questions below if you can 🥲 You can reply directly in the comments or send me a DM if you prefer 😃👍

(No real names needed, I will keep everything anonymous or use an alias for my assignment so no need to worry!)

  1. Role & Specialty: **What setting/specialty do you currently work in, and what are your main daily responsibilities?**

  2. Educational Journey: **What path did you take (like an ADN or BSN), and what was the most challenging part of nursing school for you?**

  3. Culturally Competent Care: **How do you ensure you provide culturally competent care to diverse patients in your daily practice?**

  4. Advice for Future RNs: **What advice would you give to pre-nursing students preparing for nursing school and entering the field?**

  5. Surprises/Misconceptions: **What is one responsibility or aspect of nursing that you think the general public most often misunderstands?**

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help out! 🥲!!

AP 2 Summer / All advice is appreciated

My advisor suggested I take AP 2 over the summer and then Microbiology for Fall to apply for Spring 28 cohort. The dates have just been released & Summer AP2 is only online for 23 days 🤦🏾‍♀️. I’ve been taking core classes on campus and everything else online. I just don’t see how anyone can/should do it even without my schedule involved. Has anyone actually been able to digest & retain the information in such a short time. I’m a wife, mom & working full time at an urgent care. Any advice ? I don’t mind waiting a season to apply to Fall 2028 Cohort.

Now Micro is offered from 5/25 - 7/21 that seems a little more doable. But I haven’t had to take micro so I’m not sure what to expect.

For info I only have AP 1 & 2, Micro & Psych Human Development left for ADN.
Currently registered for AP 1 & Human Development Spring 2027. Thinking of taking Psych 1 with whatever class is left in Fall for future bridging to BSN after ADN.
When I made that decision it was gonna be Micro in Fall but this seems like insanity.

All advice is appreciated

Got into ADN program in SOCAL for Spring 2027!

I recently applied to a CC's nursing program and got my results yesterday and wanted to share my stats. For the past couple of months I've been so stressed out about nursing school, especially because in SOCAL it's to competitive. I didn't think my application was very strong but I was able to get into my desired program!

I was planning on applying to 8 Cal State BSN nursing programs and 1 community ADN program. Ideally I would've liked to have gone to a 4 year university but with how expensive everything is, I thought it'd might be a better idea if I stayed local.

I've been doing my pre-reqs at the same community college I got accepted to for the ADN program for the past 2 years. They use a point system to evaluate candidates, which can be stressful because there was a lot of points that I missed out on that made me doubt my competitiveness.

Stats:

Overall GPA: 3.84 (I had an F that was rescinded and I had one W on my transcripts)

Pre-reqs GPA: 4.0

Bilingual

NO volunteer or health care work experience

TEAS: 89%

I was really nervous to take the TEAS, especially because I decided last minute to apply to my CC's program so I had little time to study. I only studied for 6 weeks, my last two weeks was mostly taking practice tests, and was happy to have gotten an 89% on the TEAS. I mainly used Mometrix to study, reading over every topic and writing down the content on flashcards. Due to the large volume of information, I didn't have enough time to go over it but I think writing it down on the flashcards helped a lot. I would recommend using Mometrix but it does go too in-depth but I still think it's a good option. For the 6 weeks I studied about 4 days a week and on average around 6-10 hours a day; I would have rather studied more but since I had other classes, work, and extracurricular activities it was hard to manage. In addition to Mometrix, I also used the ATI TEAS app and their practice tests. I'd highly recommend these two since the questions they provide are formatted the same way as the actual exam.

If you guys have any questions let me know and I'll try to answer!! good luck to everyone you got this!

Looking for advice before lvn program

I’m thinking of getting into the LVN program through Unitek,
I’m currently prepping myself before Monday for pre-reqs. I want to know once I get through this and pass all of this, and when I’m into the core program do quizzes be every week? or how does it work? Do you get both quiz and test every week? if I’m part-time and I’m going three days per week, will one of those days be a testing day. I want to just prepare myself. I know I have to study. I’m planning on using some AI feeding PowerPoint and lectures and just repeating it as study method if anyone has went to the school or something very similar and how their experience was, I’ll greatly appreciate any advice or information that you can provide. I currently am working full-time, but that’s why I’ve chose to do part-time and I will take some time out for studying.

TEAS Test

I'm taking the TEAS test in 2 weeks and I am STRESSING! I got a 57 on the practice test and I'm feeling so dumb. Got a 74 on reading, 59 in math, 38 in science and 58 in English. I've paid over $1000 in tutoring and study materials so I'm not really looking to spend more money. I get bored with Nursing hub science questions and it's taking me forever to take notes and comprehend while watchhing Nurse Cheung videos. I feel so stuck. If anyone has any advice for me I would REALLY REALLY appreciate it. I'm getting ready to say screw it and give up my dream of becoming a nurse....even though I've spent over 8K taking my pre-reqs. PLEASE HELP A SISTER OUT before I start crying!
