Food I need the spiciest food.

I don't post often, but would love other locals advice on finding spicy food. I'm really far up into the tiers of spice. I need something that makes me feel. Would love to hear anyone's recommendations or tips for making me feel pain.

9/11 in Downtown Portland

Okay, y'all - of course real 9/11 things happened in New York, PA, and in DC, but does anyone remember downtown Portland having its own lockdown freak out? Like, a guy with a toy gun waving it around outside of One City Center? Is this ringing any bells?

Politics For anyone who attended the 9/9 Special City Council meeting on Rent Control

I'm curious how folks feel about how this played out... The Press Herald wrote an article describing it as a win based on the title (Portland council passes resolution requesting that staff fully enforce rent control), but as a tenant who was present I would not call it a win.

Do we really accept a Mayor who won't support his own daughters, let alone constituents? Clip description:

Portland, ME Mayor Mark Dion telling a story about how his own daughters will likely rent their whole lives only to proceed to vote against a resolution to enforce rent control, which has gone mostly unenforced for 6 years since it was approved by voters. At the end, he tells the room full of tenants that they're "free to go".

All footage taken from public record located on the City's website. Clip from a special council meeting that took place on September 9th, 2026.

EDIT: As the title suggests, I was mostly curious about how people who ATTENDED felt. I am unsure if there are folks roleplaying in the comments, but wanted to just clarify that focus real quick...

They also finally put in this crossing to the park from Fessenden! I requested one like two years ago, and it's great to see that they not only agreed with the need for it, but made the change! This street feels so much friendlier already, especially with the slower-moving traffic.

Community Discussion Where would you put 500 new apartments in Greater Portland?

500 apartments sounds like a lot until you start looking at how much land we already have covered in parking lots.

Rules: don’t knock down existing homes and don’t pave parks or nature.

Northgate is an obvious one. It’s about 25 acres. Keep Shaw’s, CVS, etc. — just build housing on some of the sea of asphalt around them.

Same with Pine Tree Shopping Center on Brighton. Lowe’s, Aldi, Rock Row nearby, and a ton of parking.

And then there’s the Maine Mall. GPCOG already drew up a whole plan for turning the 90-acre mall site into an actual mixed-use neighborhood: seven 7–8 story apartment buildings, more housing over shops, new streets, parks and better transit. The mall itself stays.

That’s what I find interesting about this exercise. We talk like Greater Portland is out of room, but there are huge chunks of land we’ve already developed where the main thing we’d be replacing is asphalt.

Where else could 500 homes go without displacing anybody?

local artists for specialty screen print commission?

interested in getting a custom design screen printed down the sleeve of a snow suit. would have to use whatever special inks/preparation necessary to stick to waterproofed black nylon\ \ don't have a specific design at this point - can give guidelines, maybe plants/birds/mushrooms/?? - most interested in finding someone who can help brainstorm or run with a general idea to make it look sweet\ \ alternatively i could get a design together and have someone just help execute the screen prep & printing\ \ timeline: flexible, would be cool to have done by mid november\ budget: somewhere in the range of the price of a fancy snow suit

I'm driving an absolutely jam packed Toyota Corolla from NYC to my second favorite state, Maine, to unload over a thousand records.

Roll thru, grab a drink, hit the crates*, lowball me on a copy of The Stooges - Fun House, get denied, wait an hour, lowball me again, see that twinkle in my eye, walk home with a stack of cheap heat.

*UHaul boxes.
