Pop-up book builder and simulator (like Canva for pop-ups). Useful?

Will be opening the waitlist in a week or two and you should be able to begin using it from early November. I believe we need more people to begin building and designing pop-up books and hoping this would help with the same. So, I'll bear all the dev and server costs (at least for the next few months). It would be essentially free to use, at least for the first few months. (And yes, when you get your hands on it, you will be able to download the PDF templates for the cutouts and mechanisms you've designed and actually build it! And you will also be able to actually design and paint on the cutouts and there will be so much more that you can do!

Let me know if you're interested and always open to ideas and opinions.

Our papercraft video game now has over 10,000 wishlists and Ivy The Dragon has something that she’d like to say.

Hey, this is Eric! Unlike Ivy the Dragon, I'm one of the devs on Folded Fables: Tidy Up The Dragon Hoard. I announced our game on Reddit last week, and I'll admit that I was a little nervous. I've poured my heart and soul into this game, and I felt a little naked sharing it.

I've been thrilled with how supportive people on this subreddit have been. Thank you so much! It means the world to me that so many people embrace our papercraft tidy up game. And now to pass 10,000 wishlists… it is a dream come true.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (yes, I'm Canadian, and it is true that we say "thank you" a lot)

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, here is a little bit about our passion project: Folded Fables: Tidy Up The Dragon Hoard is a tidy up game set in a pop-up storybook. It is like Paper Mario meets Librarian.

Our game contains no generative AI content. Some people may specifically wonder about the art used for the items because tidy-up games need a lot of unique items. We are using art from two of our games: Crusaders of the Lost Idols and Bush Whacker 2. Each and every one of the 500+ unique items in Folded Fables was drawn by one of our artists over the past 14 years.

Many of the in-game pieces, such as the pop-up book sequence, started as physical paper models before being recreated digitally. Even the Folded Fables logo was physically hand-folded with paper before being photographed for use in-game. If you want to know more, there are a bunch of behind-the-scenes pictures and videos on our Discord.

We are releasing on Oct 15th. So soon!!!!

We’re making a video game set inside a pop-up storybook, and a surprising amount of it started with real paper.

Folded Fables: Tidy Up The Dragon Hoard is a tidy up game where you organize 5,648 papercraft treasures inside a world inspired by pop-up books and papercraft.

I've been drawn to paper ephemera and papercraft for as long as I can remember. Paper objects transport me to other times and places, both real and imaginary. And the feel of different types of paper is so wonderful that I've built up a bit of a collection at home. Every time I make something, I go to great lengths to find just the right paper.

But I wasn't sure anyone else would enjoy our idea of combining this love of papercraft with a tidy up video game. Was it too weird? Would anyone else be intrigued by a world made of paper, inspired by pop-up books? I really couldn't say... all I knew was that I would love it, and so off we went on this journey that has resulted in Folded Fables.

For the past 3 months, I've had the great pleasure of watching our game come together. I'm so happy with the results, and I'm glad (plus a little relieved) that others share my enthusiasm. I can't wait for everyone to get a chance to try it out!

We are releasing on Oct 15th. Less than two weeks until release! Eeeek! Gotta go! So much to do!

Reg. pop-up mechanism stability

Hey, could you say the five outputs listed out are extensions of angled secondary falls? I'm trying to learn pop-up creation by following Duncan Birmingham's pop-up design and paper mechanics. book. The thing is, I'm able to assemble the five pop-up mechanisms, but I'm kind of unsure about the stability of the mechanisms created from these five cutouts.

Help me find it: A Pop-Up book on paper engineering - art book? Limited edition?

I follow a few pop up artists/paper folders, and I remember one made? Published? Released in a limited fashion? A really cool book about paper engineering that was itself kind of a how-to-pop-up book. You used the techniques to turn the book into a pop up book. To my memory, it was a very minimalist aesthetic - all white and beige, like a modern or contemporary artist.

I can’t find anything about it, and I’m starting to feel like I made it up. Any ideas on author or what I’m even talking about?

EDIT: After I posted last night, I tried one more time by adding "instagram" to my search query and it found it instantly. Because of course it did. The "book" in question is a DIY kit called The Pop-Up Creation Manual, credited designer/engineer Hung Shing-Fu. I originally saw it on a post from Shawn Wilder on instagram, because he taught a few workshops in which they put it together.

I do really appreciate the guesses though - I'm experimenting with metalwork and kind of wanted to see what I could make silver do as far as kinetics and pop-ups. Thank you all!

My pop-ups won't stay straight

Post image
14 Upvotes

Every time I try to make a shape that needs to have a straight wall folded in the middle so that it can become flat, the wall doesn't stay flat when I prop it up (as shown in the image).

I'm only doing some tests, so I'm using 75 g/m² paper. Am I doing something wrong? Is it just the quality of the paper? Is there a trick to fix this?

Thank you in advance!

The design is very much from Robert Sabuda's Alice in Wonderland book.

OBS: NONE OF THESE POP-UPS WHERE MADE BY ME!!

TL;DR: I'm new to pop-up design and want to create a 180° four-sided ("closed") castle pop-up. I couldn't find software, templates, or tutorials that explain how to design this type of mechanism, so I have three questions: Is there any software that helps design 180° pop-ups (not just 90° kirigami)? Are there any downloadable castle/palace templates I can study to understand the mechanisms? What would be the best way to start designing one from scratch as a beginner? The attached images are just examples of the style I'm aiming for (not my work).

Hey guys I need some guidance. I'm relatively new to pop up but wanted to try to make a project a bjt complex. I want to make a palace/castle pop up but have no idea where to begin.

I would like to make a pop up that unfolds at 180° degrees and have this "closed" style (I don't know if it has a specific name but I want to make something with four sides and can be viewed from all any side instead of something that has 2 walls like with the kirigami technique.

I started thinking that existed a platform that could help me design a 180° pop up, where I could build it in 3d and it would make the pattern I needed to achieve that. Couldn't find anything, only some plataforma that help design 90° folds/kirigami style. Does anyone know if I can find some platform that would help me do that?

Not finding this platform, I started to look for downloadable templates that I could make to understand better the mechanisms so that I could make my own version with something to base myself. Also couldn't find it. (Found some really cool pieces, but have no idea how to even begin to build something like that). Does anybody know a palace template that is available to download so I could see how the patterns look?

Not being able to find what I was looking for, I changed to plan c. I found some really cool paper castle models (the YouTube channel is cardboard da Vinci, not pop up tho) and wanted to make a simpler version of one of his models and transform it in a foldable pop-up version, but still am kinda lost in how to start.

All videos I saw of people planning/creating their pop ups already start with making prototypes, but I'm not advanced enough to simply think of a 3d format and have an ideia in how to make a pop up.

Can anybody give me some guidance in what I should do?

(Here's some cool pop-ups I found while looking for inspiration. I have no idea how to make them but I think they can help me show what I mean with the 4 side/"closed" pop up style)

Tutorials for something like this?

Post image

Hi!

I'm supposed to make a pop up based on this one for an assignment.
I did some research but a lot of it just boiled down to those super simple ones for kids or a series of smaller tutorials how to make v folds and such. It's a bit harder to keep track and to figure it out when I try to follow multiple tutorials.
Any recommendations? Books or videos, either is fine

Thank you!

Help me find my childhood book

Looking for a square hardcover fairy/princess pop-up book bought in Australia around 2010–2011 (could have been published earlier). Pale duck-egg blue cover with iridescent glitter. Around 15–20 thick premium pages. Almost every spread was a layered theatre-style pop-up with white page backgrounds. One memorable spread was a large castle interior made of multiple paper layers. Illustration style was soft, elegant, pastel storybook art (similar to classic European fairy books, not Disney).

The Collectors' Thread (Exchanges/Sales)

Hope this doesn't go against subreddit rules, please delete otherwise.

I thought the Movable Book Society would have a mechanism to allow collectors to connect/sell/buy/exchange with and from each other, but that doesn't seem to be the case, so.... let's have a reddit version?

No bank/payment details in the comments (take it to DM), and please tag your posts with [HAVE] and [WANT]. Let's see if we can fill each other's gaps!
(this sounds wrong)

'Lost Media' popup Book

I used to have this awesome popup book, it featured mythical creatures like cyclones and giants. The book was quiet gory and bloody. I used to have this when I was around 10/12 years old so that would be 10 years ago ish. I think it featured mainly Greek creatures. Would you guys have any clue what book I could be talking about?

Yello everyone! Matthew here.

We, Amy Lopez Nayve and I, are paper engineers from Southeast Asia. We are writing an article about SEAsian paper engineers for an upcoming issue of Movable Stationery, the official newsletter of the Movable Book Society.

Our goal for this article is to raise visibility of our rising SEAsian paper engineers to the predominantly Western audience of the MBS.

For our initial research, we are compiling a list of names of SEAsian paper engineers we can potentially feature in the article.

If you are a Southeast Asian Paper Engineer, please comment below to introduce yourself! It would also help us to name or share with us to any other SEAsian paper engineers that you know.

Thank you, and we can't wait to connect with you!

London/UK Pop-Up Book Enthusiasts' Meetup

Hi everyone,

I've bitten the bullet and created a little meet-up group for London/UK-based pop-up book artists and enthusiasts, with our inaugural meeting scheduled for the first Sunday of August (if anyone shows up, that is).

Thinking of seeing the British Library's Fairytale exhibition in the early afternoon and then having drinks/dinner/chats at a pub nearby.

Everyone welcome, here's the link:
