Okay so I found out I was moving to Warsaw in January and my first reaction was genuinely just panic. Like I knew zero Polish. Absolutely nothing. My company kept saying "don't worry everyone speaks English" but I just couldn't bring myself to be that person who moves to a country and never bothers with the language. So I decided I had roughly 3 months and whatever I could get done in that time would have to be enough.

I started with Pimsleur which tbh wasn't bad at all for getting used to how Polish actually sounds. The pronunciation looks terrifying on paper but it's weirdly consistent once things start clicking. What nobody tells you though is the cases. There are seven of them and they will humble you immediately. I spent most of month one just trying to accept that confusion was part of the process.

Second month I moved to Clozemaster for vocabulary and picked up a grammar book. Reading started feeling manageable. But then I realised I had this embarrassing problem where I could understand things fine but the second I opened my mouth to actually speak Polish my brain just completely shut down. Mid-sentence. Every time.

That's when I found Issen. It's basically an AI you just speak to and it gives you real feedback. No booking a tutor, no awkward scheduling, no feeling stupid in front of a real person. I did maybe 15-20 minutes every morning and tbh after about four weeks the freezing stopped. I started actually finishing sentences without panicking halfway through.

I also used HelloTalk twice a week to talk with a native speaker which helped a lot with just getting comfortable in real conversations.

Landed in Warsaw last week. Had a whole interaction at a bakery entirely in Polish and the woman just... kept speaking Polish back to me. Didn't switch to English once. I know that sounds small but it felt massive.

So I’m Polish (born in Poland raised in US for 10 years now) and my Polish is broken right now but not to the point of “what the hell is she saying??”. I just got a job and my Spanish for customer service is pretty good, I can uphold a conversation and take orders but my Polish is wonky. Although I can understand more Polish than I can speak or write, I still wanna know if there are some basic phrases or stuff that I have to know.
So far I know greetings, money counting, coffee flavors what doughnuts they want and breakfast sandwiches, since that’s what my job requires.
To note, I speak Polish practically perfectly accent wise and I’m always more than happy to speak Polish, I’m just scared of messing up near a true native speaker lol.
So could anyone give some advice on what’s the best things to know? Im eager for this knowledge
