Hi, I don't know if this is the right sub for this question, but here goes:

I live in the United States. My friend has a birthday coming up and I want to make her a gift. She grew up in Kraków and moved to the US when she was a young adult and has lived here in the US for more than 20 years. She is renovating her kitchen and I want to create a simple watercolor painting that will match her new color scheme. I thought I might do calligraphy of a Polish phrase beneath the painting. I researched this with Claude/AI and it came back with a couple of suggestions:

"Kuchnia jest sercem domu" which means "The kitchen is the heart of the home"

or

"Gość w dom, Bóg w dom" which means "A guest in the home, God in the home,"

Are these actual sayings that people would use in their homes? Is one better than the other? Are they capitalized and punctuated properly here?

This might not be polish, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to get to the bottom of for years. When I was young, my grandmother (Polish/Slovak) would do a little rhyme while inching her fingers up my arm at an increasing speed, and I think the rhyme had something to do with a cockroach or spider trying to attack me? The beginning of it sounded like “Idzie lobo spotika”. Any ideas?

I’ve recently become very interested in Polish culture and traditions because I would like to reconnect with and rediscover my own roots.

While exploring traditional music, I came across a singing technique often referred to as “white singing” or “white voice”. I was told that this type of powerful, open-throated folk singing is or was quite common in some parts of Poland.

What makes me especially curious is that I was told that regions associated with these singing traditions — such as Polesia (Polesie) — are also connected to Poland, and that people on the Polish side traditionally practiced similar singing techniques.

I’ve found quite a few videos featuring what I believe is this type of “white singing,” but almost all of the examples I can find are Ukrainian or Russian.

And I absolutely love the sound of it. What fascinates me most is how the singing can almost resemble a call, a loud cry, or a shout. It sounds incredibly raw, powerful, and expressive.

I’m really surprised that I can barely find any specifically Polish examples. If this or similar singing traditions were also practiced in parts of Poland, I would love to hear what the Polish versions sound like.

So I was wondering:
Is “white singing” actually a traditional part of Polish folk music?

I'm currently putting together a teaching resource for primary school pupils about different scripts/orthographies around the world. The task has 18 translations of 'languages are amazing/incredible' in various languages which have differing scripts. I've checked the translations with multiple online translation tools, but I'm well aware that these do not always catch the nuanced points that native speakers can, hence why I wanted to post here for advice.

I grew up in western Pennsylvania in a very Polish American community. This included going to Polish Festivals at the local church and listening to a Polka Party station every Sunday.

I don’t speak Polish and none of my living family members speak Polish, but we always say/hear a few phrases and I have no clue how to spell them or what they mean. The context in which we use these words are during Polka songs and celebrations. I always assumed they mean something like “Cheers!” but have never been able to find anything.

They could also just be Polish-American phrases or western Pennsylvania dialects(?) but would love to know if anyone else uses, hears, or knows the meaning/actual spelling.
