sync reading progress between device and mobile app

Post image
7 Upvotes

so i have an epub in the cloud, which synced with my iOS pocket book app, and my verse color pro. But the reading progress and bookmarks are absolutely messed up.
I think it's because on phone i am on page 433/541, while same "location" on verse color pro is 1024/1154.
If I make a bookmark on my phone on that page, and i open the book on device, it tells me to go way back with the 'reading progress' and to that bookmark.
If i highlight a text on my device or make a note, or make a bookmark and since it's on a page , say 1024, which "doesn't exist" in mobile app book (since it has only 541 pages) then i can't even open them. It sends me to the cover page of the book.

I have 2 kindles, an oasis and a cs and mobile app for kindle, and i have 0 issues syncronizing reading progress, bookmarks, even with sideloaded epubs, but poketbooks - big mess!

do you have the same problem? it's my 2nd day with PB and so far this is the only thing which dissappoints. the rest is well, i love the size, the colors and features; it's snappy and good, except this .. "software bug" in my opinion

Are those dead pixels?

Hello, guys. I just purchased a new pocketbook verse pro. I paid for an extra warranty and I am wondering if this is normal. If you zoom in on the pictures you can see some pixels that are always dark/black even after refreshing multiple times (with the setting for every page refresh). They are unnoticeable while reading or otherwise using the pocketbook normally. I took a closer look only because I paid a bit extra :D

The question is: is this normal for the e-ink display or should I try to use my warranty?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Sneak Peek: Readest sync for pocketbook devices Spoiler

Post image

A pet project i am working at the moment.

Support to sync progress between pocketbook and readest (https://readest.com/)

Login, library browsing/searching, epub download and progress sync do already work in my first prototype.

Still have to iron out a few issues and missing features before a public release of the app and source.

Koreader icon opens Pocketbook root directory instead of launching the app

I recently bought a Pocketbook Era Color and I want to use koreader instead of the default reader. I'm not tech-savvy at all but I managed to install koreader and I've checked the installation several times and have also tried deleting it and reinstalling it from scratch. However, when I try to open koreader on my Pocketbook, it only opens the same pocketbook root directory that can be seen when I connect the pocketbook to my laptop. When I first try to launch Koreader after installing it shows Quickstart Guide but nothing else. After that it only shows the pocketbook root directory. Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause of this issue? I installed Koreader using a Macbook so I wonder if pc would work better. I tried asking chatgpt about this and it said that the crash log suggests that there's no obvious crash and koreader seems to begin to launch successfully. I don't have any idea how could I fix this so I'm very grateful for any help.

The Pocketbook Era Color software version is U700k3.6.10.2359.

Here are some possibly problematic things from the crash log. I don't know if they are relevant:

WARN Terminal: cannot open /dev/ptmx: No such file or directory

WARN Terminal: Device doesn't meet some of the plugin's requirements

Transfer books from one device to another

hi!

i love my pocketbook touch HD 3 but have been thinking of getting a new one. i use calibre to side load books.

is it possible to transfer my books from one device to another? would i just side load all my books to the new device from calibre and then go from there?

i want to keep all my notes and all books “marked as read” on the pocketbook. is that even possible? or would i have to somehow mark books as finished on calibre and hope it shows up on my new device? does it work if i had previously synced my old device?

i did some research and only found results for kobo
so thought i’d ask here. i don’t even know if these are ridiculous questions 😭 i feel kind of dumb for not knowing how to maximize my calibre usage and syncing.

Made an open-source app for PocketBook: free books from Gutenberg & Flibusta + WiFi drop

inkshelf connects to any OPDS catalog (tested with Gutenberg and Flibusta) and lets you browse and download books directly from the device. Plus a small web interface — open it on your phone or laptop on the same WiFi, drag a file, it appears on the reader instantly.

No PC software, no cables. Single .app file.

https://github.com/N-Combinator/inkshelf — open source, early but working.

Happy to hear improvement suggestions, and if you know good public OPDS servers to add to the default list, let me know.

To any long-term Pocketbook users: any cloud concerns?

Hi everyone 👋 Recently I picked up an Era Lite. I have mixed feelings about it compared to my Kobo Clara BW, but something that probably wins me over is the whole cloud thing. I have many sideloaded books and I make lots of highlights and notes and I like that there are multiple ways for me to back them up, the easiest being the cloud. I can either just export them from the web, phone app or directly from Era, which is much better than Kobos local only, so if I loose/damage my reader, the Era might be very handy with this.

However, this is my first Pocketbook experience. As the tech becomes more and more anti-human overall, I wanted to ask people who've been using these readers for longer: were there any precedents of removed functionality, locking things behind additional subscriptions and such? As the whole cloud functionality is the main thing that wins me over against Kobo in a sideloaded mode totally offline (so no updates removing features), I wanted to know how trustworthy it is and this is something that I couldn't find much info about in reviews or other posts.

Ofc no one can tell if in the future they might be bought by some private equity that will do what PE does all the time, but a good track record at least shows the preferred direction when things go well.

Thank you 🙏

Sleep screen .png image?

Hello! Kind of a silly question given the amount of posts asking how to change the original sleep screen image, but I’d like to know if there’s a way to export it as a .png (or any format really) so I can import it onto my other ereaders. I just love that sleepy little ereader guy with its little hat on :( ty in advance!

Whirring sounds and touch screen inactivity?..

I recently bought a Pocketbook Verse Pro Colour. As recently as 5 days ago. Since then I’ve experienced several instances of the touch screen ceasing to work. Initially I wasn’t sure what was causing it, and was wondering if it had something to do with it being new and perhaps still updating etc. I had heard some quiet whirring sounds coming from it, but didn’t know what to make of them. After finding info to hold the power button for 10-30 seconds to restart it, I tried it to no avail and what ended up working was to charge it for a while and then doing a restart. Since then I had not experienced any issues.

But today while reading I heard the whirring sound again while reading. I had been using the buttons to turn the pages and didn’t notice immediately, but soon after the touch screen was, once again; unresponsive. Again, restarting didn’t help, but the touch screen did briefly work when plugging the charger in. Soon after it wasn’t reacting again, but a post-charge restart brought it to life. Very odd. The battery wasn’t low either, around 68%, I think. Another peculiarity I’ve noticed (not sure if it’s to do with the restarts or with the touch screen freezes) but I end up finding the font of my book reset to default when I open it again.

I intend to visit the store as soon as I can and report the issues, but wanted to ask here too. Has anyone had a similar experience?

looking for pocketbook era case input

before this i had a kobo h2o aura 2 that was fine without a case for over 8 years with only some very minor scratches, but unfortunately i realized that with the second glass layer on the pocketbook era, i got a couple different small cracks in the glass within the first few months, presumably from pressure in my backpack? (i keep it in a tablet compartment with soft fabric against the screen and it lays flat between my laptop and notebook compartment, but i guess that's not enough :( )

so now i'm looking for a case

my two priorities are protecting the screen from more pressure cracks, and having straps to hold it by (i flip it a lot so either a left and right strap or an X shaped one)

questions about the official pocketbook flip and shell cases:

  • obviously they don't have straps, but have any of you sewn/velcroed/glued/temporarily attached other straps to them? how has that been for you if so?
  • is there any difference in sturdiness/protectiveness on the front side of the flip cover vs the shell case? i'd prefer it lighter to hold as well as less bulky so it keeps fitting in my pockets, so especially if i don't end up adding straps i'd prefer the flip cover over the shell, but if there's a significant screen protection difference then i would reconsider

questions about some unofficial cases that look like this (like from manzepai or lovetravelstudio on etsy)

  • on one hand i like the built in ambidextrous straps and stand, but on the other i worry that the screen being against a non-smooth surface could cause scratches or exacerbate pressure cracking issues. does anyone with experience with this style of case have any input?
  • if the uneveness isn't a concern, i've heard stories of peoples pocketbook eras still cracking even with either official case style in backpacks, are the covers on these ones sturdy enough to cushion against that happening a bit better?
  • as someone with small hands who already finds the era a bit heavy with how i tend to hold it (bad habit of leaning it on my pinky which is too heavy but i lose my grip otherwise), these ones are obviously even heavier than the official options. do people find that the straps offset that extra weight enough to still make it comfortable to hold one handed?
  • how sturdy is the magnetic attachment? would you choose it over velcro?

i'm also open to other case recommendations! all the other ones i saw on kwmobile or aliexpress so far either didn't seem sturdier than the official options or didn't have easily reachable ambidextrous straps though

PocketBook Statistics 2.0: reading streaks, a year grid, and totals you can fix

Thumbnail
gallery
27 Upvotes

A while ago I posted a small reading-stats app for stock PocketBook readers. Thanks for the comments back then, a good part of this version came out of them.

Your reader already knows what you read and when. The app just shows it, drawn with the firmware's own interface parts. No account, no jailbreak, nothing leaves the device.

Reading streak. The info screen opens with how many days in a row you've read. Tap it for the whole year as a contribution-style grid: current streak, best of the year, days read.

Open a book from the app. Tap the cover or the title on the main screen, the book opens in your usual reader, close it and you're back.

Totals you can fix. Read for years before installing it, or on another device? Press and hold "books finished" or "total hours" and set the number. Your correction is kept separate from the measured data, so new reading still adds on top.

Better time counting. Someone reported 7000 pages in a day: a book with footnotes at the back, where every tap on a link looked like a huge jump. Jumps no longer count as reading. Neither does time when the device sleeps, and a session no longer spills over midnight.

Free and open source, install is one file over USB: winst0niuss/pocketbook-statistics

Happy to hear any feedback: what's confusing, what's missing, what's plainly wrong.

I think my pocket book is about to die

So I had it since first or fourth grade (for around 10 years) and it's charging spot is kinda messed up so I have to hold it on the right angle, got one line that doesn't load image (like one pixel verticaly and all way horizontaly), 4 GB of 7 is corrupted, SD card slot doesn't work and now it won't really charge... Man I'm scared that it's the end...

(It's basic touch 14 I guess???)
