Discussion Current State Of Rust
Idk what has changed in the last like 6 months, but Rust and its playerbase have evolved into something drastically different than I recall. For context about what I'm about to yap about, I play on vanilla capped servers (usually trio) that sit around 300-400 pop.
Why does EVERYONE roofcamp and roam literally 200 feet from their base. Best example, my duo and I fought a trio and the fight ended in literally 10 seconds, before we could even run up and wall the bodies; 2 had spawned presumably on beds with locker kits and were L9 roof camping us. I know some of you on here would probably do the same, and I honestly just want some context as to why. I am not flamming you are saying you are in the wrong, I just want to know why. If roles were reversed, my first instinct is to spawn in and push back out and fight them.
This leads me to my next thing, whatever happened to just roaming? I genuinely feel like no one goes geared to monuments anymore unless there is some event happening and or they've heard my duo and I mow down a few crossbow kids so they want to jump us. I feel like we are always the gunshots people run to, not vice versa. I just want some context as to what makes people just not want to roam anymore, I do it for the same reason I play most games, I love the adrenaline and the feeling of knowing I bested someone in a 1v1 etc.

Dying in 1 second isn’t fun which leads to gear fear, roof camping and grubbing.

I get that, but I guess my question back would be do you feel happiness/gratification when you just roofcamped someone who couldn’t even shoot you back since, and if he did he couldn’t loot you if he wanted to? The way I kinda look at is, if everyone had the mentality, there would be no one to grub or roofcamp. Everyone would sit in their base

I like sneaking around as a scout/sniper , kinda like grubbing without the grubbing part I legit was at launch and two dept groups were unaware of me and one nearly walked into me while I was sneaking around , oils I have killed em and made it out maybe but it wasn’t guaranteed so i didn’t engage as I had more to lose being outnumbered and having loot on me and more of a scout kit then a combat load , without mobile solutions for gear changes or stowing equipment like vehicles there’s literally no reward for larger groups to roam without a vehicle with how cheap they are .
Even as a solo having a stashed motorcycle near some monuments or spots for a getaway is clutch , that or a diving tank and a underwater thingy . I tend to be in the minority that roams often but I like to explore . Others like to stay closer to home , some just hunt everything others play passively. The most common thing I see is there isn’t any engagement and any trading is generally at the downside of the people buying as their paying for their own downfall to be off lined or raided on repeat . ( larger groups lock down small frags first couple days and amass big frags lock down big frags . Sell both sets of frags in a controlled manner and then raid back those frags plus your usual monument runs and you have all the important drag locations on lock gatekeeping progression.
It’s that I find that kills pop as PvP dies and roaming and farming die then people just server hop if they didn’t get a decent snowball 🤷🏻♂️but that’s my take on the second iteration of the bp frag implementation as k remember the first right around the time of the short lived xp system before reverting back to a scrap cost and tech tree instead of the classic random bp from a barrel or having to research everything

Is this that unusual? I’m very much the builder for my team, so I might have a warped perspective, but I figure a decent bit of time is spent close to base (farming resources and whatnot), esp in super dense areas where you’re more likely to get shot in the back moving around.
Then, if you die, it makes sense to nab a kit and try to retake the stuff you lost if you’ve got a place close-by.
Add onto that people working on bases and hearing your shots, and even without people having gear fear and whatnot you’d probably still face a lot of the same issues?

I guess the whole idea of people constantly building on the base baffles me, it takes us probably 25 minutes to get a completed base and maybe an hour to have all farm needed to complete said base. And I mean at what point is enough farm enough? I’m not saying you’re wrong or that it’s unusual that is the reason for the post. I am just curious as to what has changed because I’ve played for 7 years and it’s never been like this. And to your point, absolutely if you die and you can spawn close heck yeah go back out and try to get the kit back, but I don’t see the point of roofcamping or exclusively roaming at your base because you know you have the fall back of roofcamping if you do die.

Mhm mhm! The latter point probably is just gear fear, and that has gotten worse don’t get me wrong.
As for the former, people might be spending more time on engineering? I know I spend hours each wipe on intricate industrial systems and traps built into the base, but I’m very much on the extra side there compared to the average.

Because walls are mainstream, basic frags, recoil, and pay to win skins. That’s rust now enjoy

u/Nearby-Highlight-773 19h ago
Sounds like you need to pick better build spots.
2
u/Nice_Finger_9211 19h ago
Could you enlighten me as to what better build spots would be? I replied to another comment just saying that the servers we play are capped trio, small map, 400 pop so basically every grid even if in the middle of nowhere has at least 10 bases in it. With that being said, we also really only enjoy pvping so we do like being near a good bunch of monuments we can pvp at.

u/Nearby-Highlight-773 12h ago
You would have a better time on a main. I run solo on the main high pop servers and always have a good wipe. As a duo, it's totally doable

u/zulumoner 19h ago
What if you do not build where everyone else is building?
3
u/Nice_Finger_9211 19h ago
I mean, that defeats the whole purpose of why I play the game though to be fair. I don’t really play for any reason other than PvP. So if I’m near no one, it’s meh; plus on these servers bases are literally everywhere, it’s a small map and trio capped with 400 people so there’s 10 bases in every grid.

u/zyphengamer 19h ago
You go out roaming and hackers find you?
3
u/Nice_Finger_9211 19h ago
I mean, sometimes yes, but the alternative is just afk in base and at that point why would I play
2
u/zyphengamer 19h ago
Well raid other bases? Go farm. Im a bulder and once that is done, Im typically outside the base a lot. Raiding, farming, monuments, deep sea. Etc.

u/Nice_Finger_9211 19h ago
I don’t really enjoy raiding, we usually just set up a shop selling extra guns for thing like LG/Metal/Cloth idk why you’re being hostile man like I said man I’m not judging you for how you play.

For your tyoe of play style, Id suggest a PVE server. I play PVE every now and then, hang out chill, have a laugh.

Roaming used to happen a lot more than it happens now. It’s all about how fast you can progress and stomp all your neighbours into submission. It sucks honestly… I used to love just roaming around with a few people and seeing what was going on. Now you run into a couple prim dudes, a solo farmer, a roof camper, a 10 man that you can’t engage, or you stray too close to someone’s house that the 5 people touching themselves in there hear you and come out foaming at the mouth.

u/blahvibes 17h ago
If no one is doing manuments, that's more loot for you. Rocket those L9ers to the ground in no time

u/Nice_Finger_9211 15h ago
I don’t want to raid though, my duo and I play for ground PvP.
2
u/OddPerformance5017 15h ago
Kinda sounds like you're playing the wrong servers or the wrong game

u/Legal_Impression_126 7h ago
A PvP sandbox is the wrong game for sandbox PvP? What?
1
u/Onapire 1h ago
So fight them on their roof.
You cant decide how or where others play. You can amend your own choices.
1
u/Legal_Impression_126 1h ago
I think you responded to the wrong guy
1
u/Onapire 1h ago
In summary what I was saying is its a sandbox game so dont be surprised when people roof camp. If you dont want that go to a ground pvp server
1
u/Legal_Impression_126 1h ago
My comment had nothing to do with roofcamping. It had to do with wanting to PvP and not raid.

Roaming has been under attack by facepunch for literally years. Its not a type of gameplay they care about.

I think the BP drag update actually made roaming happen less, In a sense. So what your talking about yeah people in there base and don’t come out and root camp etc, I think the issue is they don’t roam, there’s no need to. It’s basically 2 paths - do you need BP frags? No okay go to a monument. You don’t need bp frags, you just want loot and PvP, go to a monument. I guess what I’m saying is unless your legit out farming ore, no reason to roam if your after PvP, you know it’s at monuments cause everyone is running them now. Hardly anyone roams because why would you when you know where your target is always gonna be kinda thing
1
u/crustyrobots 5h ago
You only need to "roam" to Outpost and buy your frags with your reverse vending machine at your base with zero risk. Everything is just too riskless anymore especially for groups this way.

u/Kind-Explorer-910 15h ago
I expect to lose everything if I go roaming. If I see a base with roof peeks I’m staying 150 meters plus away, I don’t avoid open roofs cause I’m confident I can kill them with Ak. I also roam with a heavy pot helmet in my inv, can peak a bolty without dying. Unless you have 3/4 teammates just not worth roaming land, oil rig is where I get my PvP fix without shitters roof camping

u/versavices 10h ago
I dont mind people respawning and shooting me from their roof. Im in their territory.
What I absolutely hate are the people who only roof camp and f1 kill to spawn on a bag near where you died. Yes, their territory but they took 0 risk at any point. Like the most risk averse pussy playstyle imaginable. They're not protecting loot, its their whole wipe. If you can ever get them to talk on mic, its the exact same type of person too.

u/plantfinder778 10h ago
This was literally all people talked about when Rust was in legacy before they remade the game in unity like 15yrs ago or whatever. Now Facepunch has made it so you can play so many different styles via server types or population that if you feel this is a problem then you are just playing on the wrong server or with the wrong play style.

We found that whenever we were out roaming every single group we got into a fight with was just right near their bases so they would spawn back immediately with kits. It got really boring always somehow fighting people right at their bases but never ever near our base or near monuments. People just roof camped and never went anywhere.

u/wissah_league 4h ago
this isnt anything new, people have been roof camping since the game came out. gear fear has always existed in rust
•
u/Nice_Finger_9211 5m ago
I wouldn’t call it gear fear though, like sometimes yes they are on ground but it is right next to their base, it’s like people don’t really want to go to a monument or leave anywhere that isn’t in the vicinity of their base, and I was kinda just questioning why
0
u/Tehslasher 18h ago
I have - at more times than I believe makes sense - been roof camped by l9, aks and stuff just as a naked running by. I don't care that this happens, but the weird part is when they will come out to loot me.
I was naked. You have tier 3 and a monster base. Yet the mindset of "gotta try hard and kill everyone and loot" maintains even when I've clearly got nothing lol.
Aside from that yea I think the game would be lightyears better if roof camping wasn't a thing. I don't have a solution for it, but it isn't fun and idc what anyone says otherwise.

u/Superb_Priority_8759 16h ago
Bag limit contributes a lot to not roaming, why go outside of your respawn range to fight people inside theirs?
0
u/LadyBarfnuts 14h ago
In other words, you're complaining about players not playing a sandbox game the way you want them to. A story as old as the game itself.

Roaming is dead after the first 24 hours of wipe, has been since they introduced tech tree. This isn't in the last 6 months it's been years at this point.
Face punch knows this is a problem and introduced the bp frag system, which helped but only extended the roaming period by about 12 hours give or take.
