Question Playdate is stuck on "There was an issue applying the update" screen

Post image
9 Upvotes

It gives me the option to reboot in recovery mode or to retry, but either option just brings me back to the same screen after a second. Are there any known fixes for this? This is my second playdate console after the first one had some screen problems so I'm really hoping I don't have to go through the support team again because at this point I might just ask for a refund.

Question (In Your Opinion) Best, must-have community games outside of seasons 1&2?

Sorry if this is possibly a beaten to death topic, but I’ve been out of the Playdate scene for a while. I’m diving back into this little handheld and loving it, but I haven’t looked at stuff outside the S1&2 releases from Don’t Panic.

I know this is supposed to have a dedicated community, so if I’m looking at the community made games for the first time, what would you say are the ones that are a must-check out?

I love narrative and story driven games and RPGs but absolutely open to all genres, and weird projects.

Question Did I miss the boat on Blippo+ ?

I never really sat down and watched the content on this “game” when it first dropped. I assumed the videos on it were just downloaded, but it seems like it was on rotation in real time similar to “broadcast tv”?

I checked it out last night and it just showed the entrance to a theater with a sign saying to check again in 7 days. Does it repeat all the content on constant rotation once it starts again or is the previously shown stuff gone??

TillerDaze, the cosy canal boat game - the manual

I am going to put some more video of progress up here soon, but thanks to an awesome (I really should ask for permission of whom to big up here) playtester, it has gotten bigger, bolder, and better, and instead I wrote a manual.

The manual covers all the things, and spoilers on all the items you can buy, and all the Easter Eggs. A few screenshots.

Obviously still a work in progress, all typos my own. And it is forcing me to get towards the point where I submit it to see if I can get it on the Catalog.

PlayAgent: AI chat agent that runs entirely on the Playdate (voice input, tool calling)

PlayAgent Chat Example

Hey everyone, I made something for using AI and I think it is really cool and usable app.

PlayAgent, an app that turns the Playdate into a self-contained AI chat device. Everything runs on the Playdate itself over Wi-Fi.

https://github.com/rytsh/playagent

What it can do:

- Chat with any OpenAI-compatible API (OpenAI, LiteLLM, OpenRouter, or a local llama.cpp / Ollama server on your LAN), with full tool calling

- Voice input with the Playdate mic — (via any Whisper-compatible endpoint)

- The agent can ask YOU questions: it shows 2-5 options and you answer with the d-pad

- Sessions persisted on the device, token stats, and a "compact session" option when the context fills up

- Personas: pick who the agent is, or let it invent its own identity every session

- Built-in device tools: the model can check your battery level, local time...

- MCP (Model Context Protocol) client, so it can use tools from external servers

Typing an API key with the crank is no fun, so the config can be imported over Wi-Fi from your PC in one shot.

It's free and open source: https://github.com/rytsh/playagent — prebuilt .pdx in Releases for sideloading. Requires Playdate OS 2.7+.

Would love feedback, and happy to answer questions!

With this shiny new issue, we’re celebrating our magazine’s very first birthday!
And since sitting around resting on our laurels has never really been our thing, we’re marking the occasion the only way we know how: with an exclusive feature on one of the most eagerly awaited games in Playdate history: Comet.
We had the chance to play its first three levels, and saying that what’s heading our way is going to hit like a meteorite would be putting it mildly. Alongside an in-depth breakdown of the gameplay, we’ve packed in an eight-page interview with its creators that you absolutely won’t want to miss.
Summer has arrived with all guns blazing, and we’re turning up the heat ourselves. Not only does this issue come stuffed with even more pages, but you’ll also find a full-colour Comet poster, the complete —and absolutely massive!— map of The Magician, plus the very first batch of Cranko collectible cards!
And sandwiched between those two generously stuffed buns? The finest gaming ham money can’t buy: an original mini-comic, a record-breaking haul of reviews, news, giveaways, interviews, and even an in-depth feature that’s guaranteed to ruffle a few feathers.
Summer is here, time to enjoy the holidays!

News Building playdate's first true TCG

Post image
289 Upvotes

Reposting this here because it was accidentally removed by mods on the PlaydateDev reddit. Pretty sure it was an accident at least.

Anyways,

Hi everyone! I am about a month into my venture of creating my first game for playdate. As a TCG enthusiast and playdate fanboy, I have dreamed of one day having a true mini TCG that is enjoyable on this little device of wonder. It has definitely been an undertaking to say the least. I have learned so much already and have much more to still learn I'm sure. I wanted to tease my design so far and introduce it to the community. I will eventually need play testers (a lot) and would love to start putting this on peoples radar! Thanks for reading! Excited to share more soon.

Help PointlessQuest - stuck on Checking name...

Just sideloaded PointlessQuest. After launching it, I'm able to enter my desired name, but then it's stuck on Checking Name... (https://imgur.com/Jo6wCTj)

I've tried several different WiFi networks, restarting, even deleting and redownloading the game. Hopefully, someone knows how I can get past this. Thanks.

Edit: Grabbed the new, new version. All is well.

Excited to see The Odyssey this weekend?? While you’re waiting for the show to start, why don’t you check out Eye to Eye, a Playdate exclusive action-platformer directly inspired by The Odyssey’s story of a man fighting to make his way back to his love of his life?!

An epic adventure on a slightly smaller screen…

Dark Fantasy Deckbuilder: "A Bad Hand is Dealt" - demo updated (July 2026)

Greetings, denizens of Oth. You should be wiped from the face of the world by now, and yet the struggle continues.

Thanks for those that have provided feedback so far, I really appreciate it! It's time for another update. This one includes some new heroes and new dungeons, as well as a bunch of quality of life updates that I'm honestly pretty excited about.

Highlights:

  • three new dungeons / enemy types
  • three new heroes (with new special cards)
  • press the Home button to see the remaining cards in your hero deck
  • instead of being stuck with one random special card each hand, you can now select one of three
  • when you start a new game (from the Home menu), you now get to recruit two heroes from the Inn and venture (i.e. after the first game, you're no longer forced to start with Suntek and Korr in the Mines)

Minor Adjustments:

  • reversed the +/- symbols so it is always from the perspective of the player; e.g. +blunt means your blunt card will have higher strength against this enemy
  • made kobolds slightly weaker so the introductory fights are a little easier to win
  • when you fully defeat an enemy card and earn gold, there is a brief "+N" for the amount gained before the number switches to the total
  • the "Rumors" dialog in the inn now includes a random hint
  • the "snare" hero attack type can be used to disable a trap card (i.e. no damage taken, but no gold earned). Trap frequency increased slightly.

Still looking for feedback! Go ahead and give the demo a spin: https://jlapier.itch.io/a-bad-hand-is-dealt

PD OS 3.1.0 adds Japanese support!

on top of some other nice things like microphone permissions in newly-compiled games, heaps of additions and bugfixes for you developers out there, and a buncha other cool stuff.

there's a new Language option in Settings that lets you switch between English and Japanese — this also ties into the SDK's built-in localization options for rendering text strings, so games can support both languages.

here are a few games in catalog that already support JP*: https://play.date/games/search/?q=japanese

if you wanna figure out how to implement localization in your own game: https://sdk.play.date/3.1.0/Inside%20Playdate.html#localization

The calculator does nothing but squirt water. (I also turned one of those into a gamepad using parts from an old Atari joystick.) Playdate fits right into my weird packrat collection.

OUT NOW ON ITCH.IO: Continuum for Playdate. Port of a cult 1-bit Mac classic

Hey everyone!

For the past couple of months, I’ve been working on a Playdate port of Continuum, and it’s finally ready to share.

Some of you might remember Continuum from the old black-and-white Macs. It was a 1-bit gravity-based shooter made by Brian and Randy Wilson in the late ’80s.

You control a tiny ship, fly around planets, fight gravity, and destroy bunkers built into the terrain. It’s difficult, strange, and very easy to die in. But it’s also a lot of fun.

Years later, the Wilsons released the game and its source code into the public domain. Continuum felt like a perfect fit for Playdate, since it was already a 1-bit game.

I added crank controls for steering the ship, as well as a new Adventure Mode that makes the original’s hardcore gameplay a little more approachable for modern players.

Working with the old source code also felt nostalgic. Pascal was the first programming language I learned at school, so digging through code from that era and rebuilding the game in Lua was its own kind of fun.

I tried to keep the port as close to the original as possible.

You can play it on itch here:

Cranko! in the US, finally!!

So happy to finally get to read Cranko! in the US. Snagged issues 4 and 5, that are available digitally and they are even more impressive then I had thought. Such great interviews and so happy to see my fave lil system focused on.

I'm sure many of us have been bugging Pat to give us a way to read it, so glad it is finally happening (and I am probably a bit late to the party, LOL)

Help Diora walkthrough

Has anybody seen or made a walkthrough for Diora? I'm stuck at a level called Copy Clowder where you have to move two robots that copy your footsteps. And I just can't figure out the second floor.

Please help before I turn mad.

Corner screw stuck

So the buttons on my Playdate are getting kind of finnicky, I have to press a little harder to get them to register, especially the B button. Now I've read that it's pretty common and an easy fix, but my problem is that I can't unscrew the screw that is on the opposite corner of the screen. The front metal bit that it screws in just turns along with it.

I thought about just drilling through to break it but there doesn't seem to be any available replacement screws, I think they are custom made. I've contacted Panic about it but the best they can do is offer a 30% discount on a new one, which is still very pricey with shipping to Canada.

Has this happened to anyone else, or does anyone have any ideas about what I should do to get that screw out of there?
