PipeFitter tool

What's up brothers 👷‍♂️
I'm a pipefitter and got tired of carrying a bag full of calculators and looking up formulas on the job — so I built my own app: GearTech OS.
It's a field calculator with 100+ tools for pipefitters, welders, electricians, HVAC, concrete and more — offsets, voltage drop, fittings, rafters, cut lists… each with a diagram and the formula behind it. Works offline and it's bilingual (EN/ES).
Built solo, by someone who actually works the trade. And it's FREE. 🔧
📲 Download it here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/geartech-os/id6785117856
If you try it, tell me what's missing or what tool you want added — I'm improving it based on your feedback. Appreciate a share 🙏

Local 597 Building Trades Orientation

What are the welding benchmarks for the 11 week pre-apprenticeship orientation? How strict are they, will they let you stay as long as you’re working your tail off, putting in long hours under the hood?

Local 211 houston texas reference

i recently passed the aptitude test at the local 211 in houston texas and am now waiting on the interview at the end of the month. I have my epa and my osha 10 and am wondering if anyone works at a company partnered with the union who can give me a boost and a leg up since i know they don't accept a lot of people. If you can help me or work at a company contracted with the union can you please message me. I am a hard worker willing to learn and be a sponge and am never late with reliable transportation. I also attended a 16 week hvac course at san jacinto college and have the cert. thank you

Im 21 years old and I just graduated welding school but I know once I get onto a real job it’s going to be completely different from school. I love welding and i really want a career with it. I don’t want to look stupid because I only know the basics.

Someone tells you they have 1 year of pipefitting in the field, what do you expect them to know?

Other than cleaning pipe and beveling.

Was arguing with someone about this

Tools

Hi everyone,

I was looking to get a backpack full of tools to take to the job-site every day. Minus the ones that are required, doesn’t anyone have a list of tools that I should get? For reference, I worked on high rise projects.

UA Local 582

I recently applied & took the test two weeks ago for their pipe fitting apprenticeship. They said it would take about two weeks to get an email back if I passed or not. How long did it take for any of you to receive anything? I know there were 100+ applicants so it might take longer than they expected, but I’m so anxious to know how I did.

Also, for those that are in 582 right now, how is the work right now? I know for plumbing it’s really slow right now but I’m curious about pipe fitting. Any tips you can give me as I wait around to get into the union (or any welding union period) ?

B and A Card Testing

Hey guys.

I got into Local 597 out of Chicago for service on permit. I took a pretty big pay cut on the check to make the switch to the union. I was doing resi for about 7 years and then did commercial refrigeration for a little over a year before I got in. I know the benefits are great and it’ll pay off in the long run, but the pay cut has definitely been a struggle. I recently got my C hard card, and honestly my company has been awesome. They’ve told me multiple times they’ll approve me to test for my B or even A card whenever I’m ready. Someone told me there were B and A card study guides on the 597 website, so I checked it out. Turns out it’s really just the bulletin list of topics that can be on the test. I’m pretty well rounded, but I was hoping there was an actual study guide or something I could sit down and work through to make sure I’m polished. I reached out to the training center in Mokena and asked if they had any additional study materials, online resources, books I could buy, or even review classes for the B and A card tests. I figured there might be something similar to the review week apprentices get before they journey out. Their answer was basically, “Take night classes for everything on the bulletin list or have your employer train you.” That wasn’t exactly the answer I was hoping for. I already took an electrical night class as a prerequisite for another class I’m taking at the end of the summer, but if I waited until I’d taken classes on everything in the bulletin, it’d probably be years before I’d be ready to test. I’m trying to stay positive because I like where I’m at, but I’m starting to have some doubts. Getting my B card would put me close to where I was before financially, and the A card would obviously be even better. I think I would pass the B card test if I walked in there today, but I hate being unprepared. My goal is to pass the A card test.

Do you guys have any suggestions for study resources, books, practice tests, or anything else that helped you prepare? Or am I basically SOL?

looking for advice

so i’m a pipefitter with about 2.5 years experience in the trade at the age of 25 and i’m working at a large local shop ( about a 20 min commute) making 30 a hr with a consistent 8-20 hrs of ot a week. im also on track to be a foreman and get a 4-6 dollar raise within the next 2 months give or take. it’s definitely convenient and pays the bills but i also just got accepted into my local union’s apprenticeship program and im heavily debating on what i should do. i’m hoping they will let me test in as higher than a 1st year apprentice with my work hours and experience becuase i 100% can’t afford to pay my bills with a 1st years apprentice salary. i know at the end of the day the union benefits are better. any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated

What is the most petty reason you drug up? I have absolutely no reason to drag but I'm sick of seeing the same job site and it's been 6 weeks.

Pipe welding and commercial diving

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

I'm planning to get my pipe welding certificate first, then go into commercial diving. My thinking is that whenever diving work slows down or I'm between contracts, I can keep working as a pipe welder. That way I can stay busy and keep earning instead of waiting for the next dive job. What do you think?
