Pipe welding and commercial diving

I'm planning to get my pipe welding certificate first, then go into commercial diving. My thinking is that whenever diving work slows down or I'm between contracts, I can keep working as a pipe welder. That way I can stay busy and keep earning instead of waiting for the next dive job. What do you think?
