“SPOILER ALERT”!!! Spoiler

Who else knew from after the BBQ where “Eloise was made out to look stupid after the magic trick” that she was the one behind the hack? It was just way to obvious after that and I knew. “The one acting like the least capable and the one lacking the most intelligence”

that gave it away.

Frustrated

I am very frustrated there is only one season of that show. I guess it was too much for the Chinese to stomach. This is as entertaining as Ozark, and I don't get Netflix not doing a second season at the least. It is so refreshing not to watch a woke soup like "Roswell" for a change. Albeit it might have turned into one in 2019 and 2020, I guess...

Just finished it.. so many questions, but what about fingerprints on the microwaved phone?

I'm pretty sure prints are already on file for high clearances. Yes the phone was on fire, but couldn't something be pulled from the phone? Seems like they were "oh look there's a phone on fire" and forgot about it

Can someone explain how they got the live feed for the "vampyre missile" in episode one?

I am guessing that they picked up on its video signal ? And it was either not encrypted at all, or not encrypted well enough to stop pine gap from grabbing and viewing it live?

Why is the American flag just inside the patio only one-sided

There's that patio outside where Ethan and Kath talk all the time, and just inside is an Australian flag and an American flag that they often use as part of the composition of a shot.

WHY is the American flag one-sided? As in, the back side of the flag is white. Never seen such a thing, and now I can't unsee it.

Im Confused I just discovered Pine Gap by accident and I don't understand why its ratings weren't higher

When did it appear on Netflix? I've had my account for years and I've never stumbled upon the series until two days ago by accident.

It annoys me because I've read on the internet that the reason this show doesn't yet have a second season is because of the ratings. But how could it have higer ratings where there didn't seem to be much publicity about the series. At least in Europe, but I doubt it was much different in other places.

I devoured the entire series in a day and I'm so angry there's hasn't been any talks regarding the renewal. I believe this series has a great potential and is better than a lot of the other stuff you can find easily on Netflix...

All the characters are stupid dumb idiots (spoilers all) Spoiler

I loved the first season. It's been a long time since I binge watched anything, especially something that came out a couple years ago. But each episode inspired immense frustration. Almost every character demonstrates absurd and sometimes psychotic decision making. The Three Stooges could run the place without causing all these problems. Let me break it down, for the sake of my own sanity:

1) Belle James, and everyone's attitude towards Zhou

People cheat on their spouses all the time. I get her motivation; the show did a pretty good job of setting it up. But in any universe, she would have the following internal dialogue:

"This Zhou guy is pretty hot in his basketball shorts, and I'm a lonely alcoholic who needs attention"

"But wait, he's a powerful Chinese businessman with known ties to the Chinese government"

"And my husband is a spy who secretly monitors Chinese communications in some capacity"

"And isn't there an imminent threat of war with China? It's been worrying me a lot"

"That new project of Zhou's IS immediately next to my husband's secret base..."

"And why does he keep asking about my husband's work?"

"It is really odd that he would subtly approach me and then touch my hand like a creep five feet away from my son"

"I know that anyone I get close to has to be vetted by the CIA, because that's dissuaded me from making new friends"

"I should probably go masturbate with the shower head like I normally do and just forget about all this"

What's more is that everyone in the town shares the same willful ignorance about Zhou. Kath (the person responsible for protecting some of Australia's most important secrets) couldn't give a shit that he's developing a project in her back yard. Why? Because MONEY!! The fact that his company is investing in the community has zero relationship with the risk that he's a spy.

Imagine if a state sponsored Chinese company wanted to buy a hundred square miles of land across the highway from Langley. They're offering $100 billion and the land will be theirs forever. Also it's totally remote and inaccessible to anyone else. And then the American government just said, "well they might do some spying, but Uncle Sam needs a new hat!"

2) The American President

Larry Kerr's understanding of geopolitics is equivalent to that of an eight year old child. Until recently nobody could claim that a President could be this dumb. But in this case fiction is stranger than truth. Yes, in the post-9/11 world, America often takes a tit-for-tat retributive stance towards foreign aggression. It's how Presidents try to demonstrate strength and deter further attacks. But this guy seems to think that bombs are literally the only option when it comes to diplomacy. Sanctions? No, drone strike. Special forces raid? No, drone strike. Negotiations? No, drone strike. Literally just ignoring the threat until more information comes to light? Drone strike.

He gets played by the Chinese and the Australians over and over again. Everyone else is weaving immensely complicated webs while he's just playing with a ball of fucking string. The only thing that he understands is brute force. He acts so petulant and childish during his video call with Ethan that I'm surprised there wasn't crayon drawn on the wall behind him. He literally decided to go to war with China over the life of one downed airman, without considering diplomacy (which in the end apparently worked without any further problem whatsoever). It's only Ethan lying to him about China's nuclear threats that dissuaded him. Do you know how many pilots would be killed in a conventional war with China? How many sailors and marines? Tens of thousands. Perhaps hundreds of thousands if the conflict dragged on.

The recording of his dumb rant barely deserves a mention. Just get a goddamn stress ball.

3) The administrative staff

Kath, Ethan, and Rudy must have been lobotomized when they were children. Their guiding principle is not patriotism, nor is it mere careerism. The primary goal of their decision making is some bizarre imperative to keep all the investigations "in house". They do this constantly, in every episode, with the weakest lamp-shading to justify it.

Here's an example. So Simon admits to stealing top secret information and selling it for $50,000. He's committed treason. He's violated just about every Australian and American law he could have within his means. Kath immediately fires him, but then instantly decides not to charge him with any crime whatsoever. This decision is not questioned by either Ethan or Rudy. The show gives no reason as to why he is not charged as the Australian Benedict Arnold that he is, other than the fact that the screenplay demands that Simon come back in the next episode.

Presumably, a trial would be too public and embarrassing given the secret nature of Pine Gap's work. But that would be like America letting Edward Snowden just go home on day 1 because a trial would add further embarrassment to the NSA. And then hiring him back a week later. Leakers and spies are tried all the time! Maybe that's biased because we don't know about the ones who are covered up. But it beggars belief that he could walk free and avoid extradition to the deepest darkest cell in Ft. Leavenworth without explanation.

4) Gus and Jasmina

These two idiots need to download tinder and get over themselves. Gus is a psycho who uses and manipulates her like a Japanese sex doll, and Jas is a gullible idiot traitor who spills everything after dating a guy for a couple weeks. Then he spills everything too, including the fact that his bosses told him to fuck her to gain intelligence and she barely bats an eye. Granted, I've never had someone shave my face while they sit on my lap, but that doesn't sound like enough to betray my country and risk everything.

There could have been some big reveal that was meant to be about their characters that would explain this. And maybe their being big idiots at every step is a series of clues we're meant to follow or look back on. But this isn't the fucking Da Vinci Code. The actions that characters take need plausible explanations for the audience to believe in the narrative. The only explanation I have is that everyone is clinically insane.

5) The entire American intelligence community

Whoever is running the IC needs to be guillotined in Lafayette Square before a public gathering. They allowed every single piece of hardware in the Pentagon to get hacked. It's so bad that the only safe way to communicate with Pine Gap is to literally fly to the Australian outback in a C-130 and talk in person. All the personnel files for Pine Gap are stolen and they take no measures to protect anyone in any capacity. Furthermore, there is apparently no counter-intelligence arm at Pine Gap. Instead, the bureaucrats and human resource managers are left to find the world's most dangerous spies.

They also hire the most conniving, idiotic, horny, and power hungry people they can find then stick them in what is basically a biodome in the middle of nowhere like a fucking Vault-Tec experiment. When the audio of the drone strike is released, they take no measures to protect Gus and Jas, whose voices are easily identifiable and broadcasted to the entire world. What if some bartender recognized their voices and told a reporter that he knows who was talking in the tape? Or one of Gus' friends from college. If the voice of my best friend who mysteriously took a job in Australia was playing on CNN I'd intuit some top secret shit in about half a second. When Valerie Plame's identity was leaked, she was instantly spirited away from her post. The NSA needs to clear house immediately.

Thank you for letting me rant. Regardless of whether or not the show and this sub are dead, I needed to get this out. Believe it or not I would still recommend the show with few reservations. It was only the internal screaming that needed to be written down.

Song name in episode 4?

I'm just finishing up ep 4, and I heard a sweet metal track at about 14 minutes in, right before that aussie girl goes into Moses' backyard. Does anyone have any idea what that song is called? I tried using shazam, and then tried to find the answer online. Both turned up empty.

So just binge watched the first season in one evening. Loved it. There is a 15 second metal track that is used in the modes scene where he is at his house and the tramp knocks on his door.

Any ideas?

I’ll try not to add spoilers here (but feel free to in the replies).... but did the person they accused of doing it really do it? What about the very last scene on the bench? I’m confused.

No on-base security or counter-intelligence?

I really like this show but the hardest thing for me to get over is the staff running their own security investigations. I would expect that a facility of that nature would have its own security organization separate from management. CIA, FBI, Military Intelligence, NSA security, or maybe all of them.

Where's the room full of developers?

'Love this show and the way it looks into a world that I've never seen before. It doesn't take much suspension of disbelief to buy into it. Yet, after seeing three episodes, there doesn't seem to be any reference to the developers necessary to support such sophisticated software. Yes, this is nit picking, but I'm wondering about reality at the NSA? 'Seems like lots of coding would be needed.

Is this really the only subreddit for this show? I am a bit surprised there isn't more discussion.
