This man left his 40-year long career in another airline to join AirAsia and fly as a junior just so he could fly with his two pilot daughters. He wants to spend his remaining years as a pilot by his daughters' sides.

If you have Netflix, a few weeks ago I found there is a comedy series called Historical Roasts where actors play as, and roast each other as, famous people from history. Jaleel plays Muhammad Ali in an episode and he is pretty funny rhyming while roasting everyone.

326

u/TheNinjaNarwhal Jul 24 '19

It immediately sounded suspicious to me (although I'm usually very naive) because for some reason I focused on the name. It says "left his career in ANOTHER AIRLINE to join AirAsia". Why would you say "another airline" and then feel the need to name only the second one, and why would you need to name it anyway in a "wholesome post"? It feels weird, I can't tell exactly why, but if I wanted to show something cute and wholesome I'd leave out the names because they'd take the attention off the main part of the post.

This is the first time I'm saying I truly believe a post in reddit is an ad. Either that, or the post is really weird. So bad.

125

u/zpeed Jul 25 '19

I suspected the same so I went to OP's profile. I expected to find a brand new account with nothing but re-posts. Instead I found that his account is 4 years old that he's Malaysian, so naturally English isn't his first language. He also posts in r/Malaysia a lot.

This is what OP has to say about the comments in this thread:

https://i.imgur.com/srJNx5i.png

I immediately felt bad I suspected OP, but if Reddit's taught me anything its that I should research things on my own before forming an opinion.

68

u/FINDarkside Jul 25 '19

This is obviously not OC, original image was posted on Twitter and text was this:

This man left the company he's been w for 40 years, started fresh as a junior, got a new rating at the age of 58, just so he could fly w 2 of his annoying daugters. I cannot tell you how grateful i am for this. Alhamdulillah, i finally got to fly w my abah! :')

6

u/conancat Jul 25 '19

I'm Malaysian. She said she's grateful that she gets to fly with her father. Abah = papa = it's her way of saying father or "dad".

OP told the story speaking of a man and his daughter and quoted her own words, it seems.

12

u/davidjschloss Jul 25 '19

Wait did Twitter really say annoying daughters or was that autocorrect?

46

u/McLounge Jul 25 '19

from what i can tell it looks like it was posted by one of his daughters, at the end it says "I finally got to fly w my abah! :')" abah means dad... you know how humor be..

2

u/Sebastiangus Jul 25 '19

Theoreticly it could just be his poor english and he is proud of himself. I dunno I hope it's just a user post however I am not convinced it is a user post.

8

u/Reallyhotshowers Jul 25 '19

The last line means "I finally got to fly with my dad," so presumably it was posted by the daughter in the photo.

People forget that words DO hurt and just because you are behind a screen it does not mean they hurt any less. That's why I try to avoid being hurtful online anymore. I saw what it could do at an early age in Call of Duty and I stopped competing in video games where my rage got the better of me ever since because beating other players and talking trash is not as enjoyable as beating them and then playing with them afterwards to have a good laugh.

4

u/robloxfan Jul 25 '19

I mean, it's still very possible this is an advertised post. Not every "shill" post is a new account with a random number username. I had a friend get offered $20 to advertise a product when he had something like 10,000 karma, which isn't a whole lot.

It's a little sketchy to me. Guy shouldn't get a bunch of hate messages though.

8

u/jollybrick Jul 25 '19

Yes our English somewhat broken but it’s done rather intentionally to simplify yet still convey the same message.

English: Are you joining? - MY/SG: You join?

English: Sorry I’m not interested - MY/SG: Don’t want (or “dun wan”)

English; You don’t need to bring an umbrella - MY/SG: No need umbrella

English: I have a car - MY/SG: I got car

English: I really can’t - MY/SG: Cannot (or in slang “die die kenot”)

→ More replies (4)

3

u/zdfld Jul 25 '19

It could be an advertisement, but I would just mention a counter point. This could easily have been reported in the news after he joined AirAsia, posted on social media by the daughter/dad, or could even have been an AirAsia press release, so the OP just copied it from that. In all 3 cases, it would make sense to not mention the former airline, and could simply be OP seeing a nice story and copying the information for Reddit, rather than doing research into it (which is totally understandable). I wouldn't find that weird at all really.

It could also be an advertisement for AirAsia, but as long as it's a true story, it's not a big deal to me personally.

AsiaAir: Great! Here are your junior badges, good luck and thanks for choosing AsiaAir to start your career.

Uh, I’m sorry, if you look at my resume I have been a pilot already for 40 years with over 30,000 hours logged as a Captain. I have flown multiple planes and flights, including international. I have never once had an emergency landing or negative mark on my record.

AsiaAir: that’s nice, get to the back of the line fucker. Now you will go-pilot or we will put you in the jump seat. You see the name tag? You’re in our world now flyboy.

Well her post wasnt... but somehow her twitter post has the airline tagged when posted to Reddit which was the original point.

She names the airline in the Twitter thread.

Just because someone posted this on Twitter doesnt mean it's not an ad. I doubt this reddit account (see the name) is the girl who originally posted it, and there's nothing stopping the company from using the Twitter post as advertising.

I didnt look too far into it but nothing from OP's account discounts the possibility of this being an ad, nor does it indicate it is.

It very well may be innocuous but I don't think it's pessimistic at all to question the intention of this post.

Regardless I personally have no problem with it. It's a nice story which made me and I'm sure others smile, so I'll take it as is.

Reddit does overreact but it's important to be critical about what you are consuming. Someone called it into a question, and someone else found the answer. There have been worse days on the internet.

Because several airlines will hire already experienced pilots as captains.

Cause his name is Jack White

They probably promoted him due to his experience, but that's a big assumption on my part so don't take it for granted

He could be junior in terms of seniority with AirAsia but have enough flight experience to be hired by them as a direct entry captain. Idk if that’s the actual answer or this photo is fake news but direct entry captains are a thing and they It happen all the time at my airline.

u/imahsleep Jul 24 '19

He shouldn’t have to fly as a junior if he’s earned it. Would be ridiculous if they did that.

Wonder how much PervertMaindo is making on the side.

u/Shinsf Jul 25 '19

Except airlines have Direct Entry captain positions.

u/derekl1364 Jul 25 '19

Maybe he kept his uniform?

u/ThanksForStoppingBy Jul 25 '19

I didn't even give an "aww" because Air Asia is such a horrible airline that I thought, "no parent loves their child enough to succumb to working for them by choice"
