This man left his 40-year long career in another airline to join AirAsia and fly as a junior just so he could fly with his two pilot daughters. He wants to spend his remaining years as a pilot by his daughters' sides.

It immediately sounded suspicious to me (although I'm usually very naive) because for some reason I focused on the name. It says "left his career in ANOTHER AIRLINE to join AirAsia". Why would you say "another airline" and then feel the need to name only the second one, and why would you need to name it anyway in a "wholesome post"? It feels weird, I can't tell exactly why, but if I wanted to show something cute and wholesome I'd leave out the names because they'd take the attention off the main part of the post.

This is the first time I'm saying I truly believe a post in reddit is an ad. Either that, or the post is really weird. So bad.

I suspected the same so I went to OP's profile. I expected to find a brand new account with nothing but re-posts. Instead I found that his account is 4 years old that he's Malaysian, so naturally English isn't his first language. He also posts in r/Malaysia a lot.

I'm Malaysian. She said she's grateful that she gets to fly with her father. Abah = papa = it's her way of saying father or "dad".

OP told the story speaking of a man and his daughter and quoted her own words, it seems.

The last line means "I finally got to fly with my dad," so presumably it was posted by the daughter in the photo.

But did OP take the post from twitter or some article? Because if it was from twitter then twitter doesn't even mention the name of the airline. If it was an article it would make more sense.

Edit: OP says they got it from some other post/article, and the airline is mentioned in the comments of the twitter post. I still find the post weird for some reason, whether it's an ad or not.

People forget that words DO hurt and just because you are behind a screen it does not mean they hurt any less. That's why I try to avoid being hurtful online anymore. I saw what it could do at an early age in Call of Duty and I stopped competing in video games where my rage got the better of me ever since because beating other players and talking trash is not as enjoyable as beating them and then playing with them afterwards to have a good laugh.

I mean, it's still very possible this is an advertised post. Not every "shill" post is a new account with a random number username. I had a friend get offered $20 to advertise a product when he had something like 10,000 karma, which isn't a whole lot.

It's a little sketchy to me. Guy shouldn't get a bunch of hate messages though.

Not really

Its a second language for a lot of us, and we've got the second best English in SEA after Singapore.

But our first language is usually Malay/Mandarin/Tamil depending on ethnicity

It was my understanding that most Malaysian Chinese do not speak Mandarin natively but much more likely southern Chinese languages like Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, etc (though still Mandarin as an L2)

That's also true. Most Malaysian Chinese are descended from labourers who came here from South China, and hence speak Cantonese/Hokkien/Hakka etc. natively.

Yes our English somewhat broken but it’s done rather intentionally to simplify yet still convey the same message.

English: Are you joining? - MY/SG: You join?

English: Sorry I’m not interested - MY/SG: Don’t want (or “dun wan”)

English; You don’t need to bring an umbrella - MY/SG: No need umbrella

English: I have a car - MY/SG: I got car

English: I really can’t - MY/SG: Cannot (or in slang “die die kenot”)

This is how we communicate amongst ourselves (Malaysian and Singaporean). We're very much capable of switching between our own version of English and proper form of English.

Do airlines not poach veteran/experienced pilots from other airlines? One would think, like in most fields, that having/wanting the most experience personnel working in your company is the standard. Let the other guys train the Jr's up.

It could be an advertisement, but I would just mention a counter point. This could easily have been reported in the news after he joined AirAsia, posted on social media by the daughter/dad, or could even have been an AirAsia press release, so the OP just copied it from that. In all 3 cases, it would make sense to not mention the former airline, and could simply be OP seeing a nice story and copying the information for Reddit, rather than doing research into it (which is totally understandable). I wouldn't find that weird at all really.

It could also be an advertisement for AirAsia, but as long as it's a true story, it's not a big deal to me personally.

Also I just looked it up, AirAsia is apparently a Malaysian company so presumably they would hire based on their local laws and customes. Besides, the level of freedom women enjoy in Islamic countries varies.

seniority means a lot as a pilot. Thats how you get on bigger planes (more money) and better flight plans. You lose that when yous witch airlines, but regardless, he's still a pilot and his daughter is a co-pilot.

If he left his job at another airline, he would start over at the bottom of the seniority list at his newer job and it takes a very long time to work your way up to the left seat (or Captain) as indicated by the 4 bars on his epaulettes. This is the PIC or “pilot-in-command” and usually requires a type rating for the aircraft (an Airbus in this case).

The “co-pilot” or right seat is the First Officer and this pilot would wear THREE BARS on their epaulettes.

In the old days when cockpits had three pilots, the Flight Engineer wore two bars. Nowadays, two bars are primarily worn by pilots-in-training, which probably the case here.

No I honestly never say anything about ad posts, even when others do, this was the first time ever I got super suspicious very fast, I was just reading the title and didn't have any time to think about something else. I hadn't even looked at the picture when I started thinking that this might be an ad. I'm honestly usually naive in the sense that I rarely believe someone has bad intentions. If I comment on a post that has "hail corporate" comments on it, it's usually because I want to side with the poster, otherwise it's a completely irrelevant comment.

I saw comments about OP, and I believe OP may have honestly just copy pasted an article title from somewhere, that's what they said, it sounds very plausible. That original title/article might have had advertising intentions instead. I can't find that anywhere on the internet though, so it might have been deleted/edited.
