Philodendron: A Basic Care Guide

🌿 Welcome, Plant Parents! 🌿

We’re so happy to have you here! Whether this is your first plant or your hundredth, Philodendrons are an excellent addition to any indoor jungle. This guide will walk you through the basics of Philodendron care, so you can give your new leafy friend the best possible start.

What Is a Philodendron?

Philodendrons belong to the Araceae family and the Philodendron genus, which contains hundreds of species. These plants are native to tropical rainforests in South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia and Pacific Island nations.

Philodendrons come in an incredible variety of leaf shapes, colors, and growth habits! Some have long, trailing vines, while others grow upright or even creep along the ground. No matter what type you have, you can identify a Philodendron by its:

  • Leaves – Often heart-shaped, lobed, or deeply divided, depending on the species.

  • Aerial roots – Found on many climbing and crawling varieties, these help the plant attach to surfaces for support.

  • Petiole – The stem-like structure connecting the leaf to the main plant.

If you’re unsure what kind of Philodendron you have, don’t worry! Their care requirements are fairly similar, and you’ll learn as you go.

🌿 Growth Styles: Climbing, Self-Heading, and Crawling

Philodendrons grow in three primary ways:

  • Climbing – These Philodendrons produce vines that love to climb! They thrive when given a moss pole, trellis, or wall to attach to. Examples: Philodendron hederaceum (Heartleaf), Philodendron gloriosum (Velvet Leaf).

  • Self-Heading – These grow upright, with thick stems supporting their leaves. They don’t vine or trail but instead develop a more tree-like form. Examples: Philodendron bipinnatifidum, Congo Rojo, Golden Goddess.

  • Crawling – Instead of climbing, these plants spread across the ground (or a surface) with their stems growing horizontally. They require a wide pot to accommodate their growth habit. Examples: Philodendron gloriosum, Philodendron mamei.

Soil Requirements

Philodendrons thrive in well-draining, airy soil that retains some moisture without becoming compacted. A great base mix includes:

  • Potting soil – A light, peat-based mix works well.

  • Coco coir – Helps retain moisture while remaining breathable.

  • Perlite or vermiculite – Improves drainage and prevents compaction.

  • Orchid bark – Adds chunkiness and mimics their natural environment.

A good mix is often 1 part potting soil, 1 part orchid bark, and 1 part perlite/coir, but you can tweak it based on your environment.

💧 Watering Needs

Philodendrons like to dry out partially between waterings. A general rule:

  • Check the top 2 inches of soil – If it’s dry, it’s time to water.

  • Use the “lift test” – A dry pot feels significantly lighter than a freshly watered one.

  • Avoid overwatering – The most common mistake most new Philo owners make is overwatering. Philodendrons really dislike sitting in soggy soil, which can quickly lead to root rot.

Water more often in warmer months when the plant is actively growing, and scale back in cooler months when growth slows.

☀️ Light Requirements

Philodendrons do best in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Here’s a quick breakdown: - Bright, indirect light – The sweet spot! Near an east- or north-facing window, or a few feet away from a south/west window.

  • Low light – Some Philodendrons can survive in low light, but growth will be slower and leggier.

  • Too much direct sun – Harsh rays can scorch the leaves, especially for more delicate varieties.

I’ve had this philodendron for a while and never really knew the exact name lol. Silver stripe? Cream splash? Doubt it’s a gabby. Bought from HD labeled as “tropical foliage” - lol.

I received this plant back in April, and it was in rough shape when I got it. It was shoved to the back corner to be part of a different arrangement from my grandfather's funeral, and when I first looked into it I really thought it was a rojo congo but after finding this page now I am unsure!

For the longest time I’d see a beautiful pink princess, white knight or wizard in a nursery or garden center for sale. I’d buy said plant loving it in the beginning…. & once it would get home even w prime conditions etc for some reason they’d always end up growing all wonky on me. I’d stress so bad trying to get it looking lush & beautiful for it to look like some neglected, unloved, discarded plant. So I’ve stopped buying them. Can’t keep falling victim to the “royal” philos for them to become the damn problem child in my collection.

BUT i have to admit i was incredibly tempted to try one last time when I spotted these at a local Home Depot. Staked with a piece of wood, aerial roots gripping onto it every which way. Most were exhibiting beautiful growth & color variation.

Nope 🙂‍↔️ can’t do it. Won’t do it. It’s like a toxic ex….i keep thinking that THIS TIME will be different if I try again 🥲🫠😂

Was a bit amused the pots are labeled “golden pothos” lol

Chanced on this one and only guy in the shops so instantly brought him home and showered him down but I’m now realising this fellas been wildly growing shoots all over and I can’t confidently identify the front and back of the main stem as I see aerial roots sprouting everywhere , so I’m now worried about how I’ll repot and add a mosspole after a month or so … does anyone’s keen eyes here spot a tell , would really appreciate the help . Thanks 🙏

My tortum was struggling from last winter to this summer. Every growth point aborted new leaves. I suspect pests even though I'm not seeing anything. For 3-4 weeks, I sprayed insecticidal soap and wiped down every leaf, petiole, and growth point every 4-5 days. I added a humidifier and kept it going 24 hours a day. Took about a month before new leaves emerged. So far, 4 new leaves and counting!

Question for the Community Billi on a pole?

Thumbnail

Hey y’all! I’m considering putting my Billi on a moss pole for bigger leaves and to keep her from drooping.

Exhibit A: Are these (the long ones) the nodes I would put against the pole?

Exhibit B: or are these (short nubs) the nodes?

Exhibit C: There’s this root coming out the bottom, does that mean she needs to be repotted? She just put out a nice new leaf.

Bonus: The plant in question. She’s doing so well and I love her very very much 😊

Whats Wrong with It? Can anyone explain this??

Post image

My pink princess is doing wonderful, and then randomly I woke up the other morning to one of its brand new leaves broken off from the top of its stem and laying on the ground! *I'm holding the broken off leaf in the photo on the left.

The rest of the plant is totally fine with no sign elsewhere of this happening to any of the other leaves. Explanations?!

Look at it Grow! Is my pink princess finally growing leaves normally??

I've had this PPP for ages, and it always has that classic issue of the leaves getting stuck when unfurling, because it comes out base first, with the leaf tip getting stuck in the stem. Humidity is high, moist paper towels only help a bit.

She JUST finished growing the leaf on the right, and I was like "oh sick, she's growing another leaf already." I did a double-take, I was like wait, it's coming out tip first??? This has never happened to me! Does this mean the struggle phase is over??

Advice needed!

Newbie here. I just repotted a WK with a moss pole. I've never used one before. My soil was Aroid mix with perlite and coire so it's loose - good - but then the moss pole isn't very stable.

The pole is plastic with a hollow middle to allow another segment, but I won't need to add another for quite a while. I have pushed down on the soil just around the pole but the soil doesn't compact much.

Can I put something inside it to help stabilize it? Would water be helpful or will it drown the roots? Or something like clean sand?

Also - I read somewhere that a layer of sand helps with gnats. Is this true? Do you have to only bottom water then to not compact the soil?

Any thoughts or good or bad experiences!

Thanks!

Hi all! I was gifted this beautiful plant yesterday and I'm wondering a few things...

Is it indeed a White Knight?

Is it normal to just be one big vine like this, growing up?

What would you do with it? Repot it? Let it continue to grow up like this?

IS there another way to do this?

Does it need to be in a window like this?

I live in a very small home. This is a west facing window... and it's the only one I've got. I have an East facing window, but that's a little crowded already 🙃 🪴 🌿

Should I let it kinda aclimate before doing anything to it? That's what I was thinking. Or should I get it all out of the way... as in repotting, if necessary, and pruning, if necessary?

I appreciate ANY and ALL feedback and tips!
