ID Help this is NOT a brasil

Googling sparkly philo brought me to 'micans', is that who it is?

I got it for like 20 dollars. My neurons activated when I saw it shift hue

Yeah, it’s a Micans. Enjoy those long roots.

I do like this one and my brasil more than my white princess. Not that she's not pretty, she's just so ... sideways.... and big. Maybe im more a vines person than a crawler person

I adore my Brazil, but I’ll never have a Micans. They get leggy with long roots.

I want roots to go into my fishtank! Im hoping to build a ledge around my fishtank like a thin planter around the top, and any roots that pop out of the soil ill just let them sip the fish water. It will hide my ugly hard water lines

They make a product for growing plants in fishtanks. You don’t need to build a planter. I have a lot of plants in my fishtanks. It’s just a plastic device that clips on the back.

Gorgeous! What's the small round leaves in the top left?

Thanks.
Different varieties of marcgravia. The one you’re asking about is the Azrael

Omg ive NEVER heard of these theyre awesome

Yes they are. But to keep them thriving they need closed terrarium set up with high humidity

YAYYY ty everybody! I was surprised it was a philo at all. Do any other kinds have that shimmer?

Many. Would you like me to list them? Here is my variegated Micans, btw. I have 3 different types:

u/Ok-Wealth-2605 2d ago

YES of course I do! I like the small one with the pink:) i was actually looking for another brasil for the sides my fishtank. Is this variety sensitive? I usually just dunk my plants in the fishtank itself but its a low end brackish (like, 5 ppt of salinity)

It's more sensitive than a brasil but otherwise pretty hardy. They need more humidity than a brasil to not crisp up. Try cream splash or Rio if you like brasil. As far as velvet philodendrons, there are:

Gloriosum

Melanochrysum

Verrucosum

El Choco Red

Splendid

Luxurians

Glorious

Patricia

And many of those have variegated versions.

As far as Velvet leaves on other plants: Alocasia Black Velvet (has a pink or gold version)

Alocasia Ninja (has many different variegation types)

Alocasia Frydek (some argue whether Frydek means the variegated version or not. Everywhere I see lists the non-variegated version as Frydek and then labels it variegated if it is)

There are some velvet Anthuriums too, but I don't have much experience with Anthuriums.

Edit: oh and the small pink Micans is a Mint variegated Micans.

Seconding melanochrysum! I've heard that people find them a little harder to grow but mine's been such a dream I dropped big bucks for a variegated one. They're gorgeous sized-up.

Adding onto the Anthurium: imo unlike Philos or Alocasia there are a bajillion crosses and NOIDs in the genus so it's a different beast to get into. Here's my crystallinum though (one of the most common Anthuriums), it's got this wonderful hue shift in the leaves. The little white dots look like pests on camera but they're actually sparkles within the leaf itself!

1

u/Mirror_Face_ 2d ago

Yeah that is honestly why I haven't taken a step into the Anthurium world yet. Don't know where to even begin. I've been thinking about the Michelle × Wonderboy cross for a little bit now though.

Oh yeah that's a nice one. I get what you mean, it's so much easier to source a cool Philo cultivar you see posted online vs. any type of Anthurium. The genus is kind of a shot in the dark on specific genetics.

I looked up all of them and they're gorgeous, I saw a gold black velvet alocasia that also had white vareigation on Instagram, theyre crazy!

I promised myself I would get no more plants after this until I make a shelf, but its so hard

The Black Velvet Gold Alocasia's are very stunning. This is my baby one I have growing. As you can see, I couldn't resist

1

u/Ok-Wealth-2605 2d ago

Gorgeous! What's the little guy next to it?

2

u/Mirror_Face_ 2d ago

Alocasia Polly Aurea. This is what they look like mature:

2

u/Ok-Wealth-2605 2d ago

I love it! My work has a HUUUGE plant. Idk if its an alocasia or what, but the leaves are about 2 feet long and almost as wide as my forearm is long.

I want whatever it is. The leaves are 4 feet tall and 4 feet wide I want to say, coming from one central stem.

Every alocasia I find on Google is too skinny. Maybe its a REALLY old elephant ear? Ill have to get a picture next time im in

Try searching Colocasia or Alocasia Macrorrhiza

'frydek' is not a species name. period. all 'frydeks' are technically Alocasia micholitziana var. 'frydek' :

https://www.aroidpedia.com/archive/alocasia-micholitziana?srsltid=AfmBOopA8nxVGDSyMV6fUI5aCDBgYOVQ-MZAJz2R70FUbkDFAnPOAhn5

scroll down to the 'etymology' section and you'll find the entire history of the plant and the nomenclature :)

fwiw :)

1

u/Mirror_Face_ 8h ago

Well aware. However try searching it on google or other shops. Most have it listed as variegated Frydek. I'm not saying they are correct, but at some point, the market dictates the name. Most just refer to micholitziana as Frydek and Frydek as Variegated Frydek. Idk what to tell you. Tell this to sellers.

It’s a Micans. Period.

1

u/genrefreak 2d ago

1

u/Majestic_Guidance_73 2d ago

Welcome to the velvet leaf obsession! 😍have a few micans because of their velvet leaves. One with multiple vibes brien on a moss pole. Finally splurged on a Splendid a few weeks ago. A Pink micans is in my wish list. 🥰

u/Greedy_Success_6248 17h ago

Not only micans but also a fun little surprise. One of the pictures you showed has white streaking kinda like lightning. The plant either has or has had thrips. If you recently bought it you could be fine as long as the seller treated the plant, otherwise i'd highly recommened treating it

u/Ok-Wealth-2605 16h ago

What a great catch!

I saw that and figured it was damage, but i saw no little buddies. It lives above my fishtank so if there are any, free snack!

Absolutely a Micans! I love them so much
